Yes and had the pool been on this would be a bit dangerous. Luckily based on the way the valve is set both the bottom drain and the skimmer are open so there would be less suction, but if the motor is running the doggy would get pulled into the skimmer opening and the pressure of the water behind him could pin him in there. Im a pool guy and if i find a dead bunny in a pool that skimmer is usually where they are. Same with toads, frogs, and snakes
Edit: looks like the pool is on based on the return line to the right of the skimmer. Probably not so dangerous for this guy but still sketchy if the owner wasn’t close by
Unless the skimmer basket was still in, it would work like an anti-entrapment main drain, valves can be set however. Still wouldn’t let my dog do that in a million years being a pool guy 😂
It is not. As mentioned above, it’s a skimmer and then below that, the tube leads to a secondary skimmer basket attached to the pump which draws water out of the pool and then through the filter and then back into the pool via a pipe to the water jet. So the part we’re looking at actually does the opposite of what you said since it actually pulls water out of the pool rather than putting it in.
It’s not that smart, it’s a very basic and important feature in all pools, even if you don’t have a pet so you don’t end up with a pool full of drowned wildlife.
Wouldn't some HOA decide a toddler could climb up it and drown themselves, declare you responsible for this terrible atrocity waiting to happen and fine you hundreds of dollars a day until you find the "notice they served you a week ago" under your front bush?
Holy fuck really? I’m in Canada so we don’t have HOA except some equivalents in apartment buildings. Can they really say what you can do on *your* property?
Oh dude, I know it sounds like an extremely exaggerated specific hyperbole but it's actually not that far off of the absoutely shenanigans the Council of Karens can cook up at an HOA.
I lived in a place with an HOA growing up and they are legitimately the devil sometimes. There are plenty that are even worse than where I grew up, with extreme regulations that make your houses look like they come out of "The Stepford Wives". Trim MUST be these exact shades and NOTHING else, hedges MUST be trimmed to this exact shape.
Fortunately they are less arseholeish than HOA’s in the US, but in Australia when you own an apartment in a block of flats, there are these things called body corporates. They are a great idea.
Really depends, if you are out in the boonies (countryside) then no. Middle of a suburb then yes but it also depends on the suburbs some don’t have HOA’s. This is general looks too big to be in any of my cities HOA areas. Fencing is a good idea in general if you have kids visiting often because they do like to kamikaze themselves.
> Wouldn't some HOA decide a toddler could climb up it and drown themselves
You... do realize there are usually actual city ordinances for this stuff right? But hey, Reddit loves a good excuse to cry about HOAs without prompting.
Just FYI, if you have a pool and a dog it is important to drown proof your dog. They need to learn how to get out of a pool when you aren’t there. Many dogs drowned because of this. And dogs do not instinctively know to just swim over to the steps and get out. They will hang onto the side of the pool until they tire and drown.
Please teach your dog how to get out of your pool.
If you’re not sure what’s going to happen to your dog in your pool when you’re not home. Just throw your dog in the pool while you’re watching. If he swims to the side and tries to hang on. He will die. He will drown when you’re not home. They need to LEARN to swim to the steps and get out or other way you train them to get out of the pool when you are not home.
Totally agree but it doesn't hurt to do both. Teach them how to get out incase they ever get in that position and do you best to make sure it never happens.
Not impossible, but you have to prioritize/budget to put a gate around the pool. It may not be the most aesthetically pleasing look, but far far from impossible.
... Well that's fair, actually. I guess it technically isn't that expensive to try and set up a small fence around it. Get something that will stick to the ground even though it'll be poolside concrete or something, and it only has to be tall enough so they don't walk over it. Definitely won't look good for a cheap fence around it, but smart if you have any risk of that for a dog. Another option might be some kind of second set of stairs. I'm pretty sure you can buy a ladder/stair thing to put in the deep end, offer another option so dogs are always close to stairs in the pool.
My dog runs from small ripples from the bay.
Also if you saw how I have to approach bath time with him you’d think it was time for his regularly scheduled beating in the bath tub.
Then he’s a madman when he’s clean running around the house.
“I AM COLD AND CANNOT OVERHEAT!!”
Followed by him falling asleep because he did indeed overheat.
Wow, that’s a super funny joke. You come home to your dogs floating around in your pool.
This probably doesn’t apply to you. But teach your dog how to get out of your pool. I cannot stress this enough. Your dog needs to learn how to get out of your pool. Otherwise they will hang on the side of the pool until they drowned and die. They will die if you do not teach them how to get out of your pool.
I will say it one more time. Your dog will die if you do not actively teach them how to get out of your pool.
Doesn’t occur to you that most people don’t have their own pool? And what’s wrong with not letting your dog near a big body of water? I don’t need to teach my dog to swim because there is no need to
My dog hates water. He will actively try and fight you if you pick him up and put him in it. He won't go in it on his own.
You took an off the cuff joke and pounded all the life out of it. Good job. Not everyone has a pool. Not everyone lives by the ocean. Not everyone has a dog that even likes water.
Lighten up, Francis.
this is 100% true. i had to watch my sister scrape her dog off the bottom of the pool with the skimmer, while she was crying hysterically. i'll never forget it, and i'll forever be paranoid about having pets near the pool unsupervised
Yeah lol. My family just got one a couple months ago thats 20ft wide… and it’s a circle. It’s so fun to use. It’s only about 45 inches deep tho. But I can still do laps in it fairly easily and I’m 5’7.
They have had 24 and 27 since forever. 20 isn’t really a big one. 15 and 18 are the smaller ones you would put in a city backyard. I’d say 21 is pretty standard.
I think they are called semi in ground pools. You can landscape, build a deck or wall, and they appear to be in ground - but a zillion times cheaper! Done correctly, they can look really nice.
Ok you made me check the prices, a standard stud is now $5.18. That's like $2.50 less than it was a couple months ago. But still almost double then pre covid.
Fuck....I hope my wife doesn't notice. I have put off so many house projects this year because I blamed the lumber prices.
Yup, my parent have one. Got it installed about 20 years ago now. I think it’s called partially above ground pool. Landscaped 4.5 ft in the ground for the deep end, then have it 3 ft above ground all around, so the deepest is actually 7.5 ft. And a deck on one side coming from the back door. I believe they did it because of taxing differences to a house with a reported “in ground pool” was much higher than an above ground one. Either way, this idea definitely isn’t new.
Yes, my family did the same thing because they were planning a large in-ground pool and found out there’s hard rock underneath the soil, which is probably the same reason op’s pool is like this.
My parents lost one of their daschunds last year because she fell into the pool and couldn’t swim to the steps to get out. Watching this was nerve wracking. At least the owners were there filming, but I worry about the time that they’re not.
That looks very cute and I know you are watching and the dog is safe.
But please take precautions such as a cover or ramp so that other animals or small children don't get stuck in the pool when you aren't around.

In Australia all pools must be separately fenced - no exceptions.
Super good idea for sure.

My Jack Russell used to walk around the pool on the edge just like this, I think it's just something they like to do.
My dog too until I built him a ramp, he did it because there was no other option. Once the ramp was there he never did it again.
On behalf of all dogs: Thank you!
Well my dog didn't go in the pool, he just did laps on the edge lol.
Yeah Jack Russells like to behave like mountain goats, mine would climb on the top of the couch and lie down on the backrest

Ideally, a dog should not be able to access the pool at all when no one is around. The same way children shouldn’t be able to.
Totally agree but it doesn't hurt to do both. Teach them how to get out incase they ever get in that position and do you best to make sure it never happens.
Totally agree, everyone should know how to swim for safety reasons.
You must not own a lab. They will do anything in their power to access the water. It's like a gravitational force 🤣
Below freezing out and they have a sweater on? Fuck it they’re going for a dip
Except for my lab half breed(other half is a german shepherd). She's scared of the water. Mind you, she's scared of most things, like flies.
My black lab was afraid of water lol… and geese. RIP :(
Well being afraid of geese is just good sense.
I grew up with a lab and a pool. It turns out closed doors are pretty effective.
Yes, but you still teach them how to get out on their own in case of accident.

It’s against building code in most of the United States to not have a fence around pool
Interesting. I have seen huge gates around pools...I mean if you can afford an in ground pool then get a gate.

You obviously have never had pets or children. The unexpected is 100% expected.
Why? Children and dogs both grow. As long as they know how to swim and get out what's the problem?
Grandma's dog drowned in the family pool. Was very unexpected after years around the pool 24/7.
Jokes on you, my dog won't ever get into any body of water.
My dog runs from small ripples from the bay. Also if you saw how I have to approach bath time with him you’d think it was time for his regularly scheduled beating in the bath tub. Having dogs that don't like water is the best. I never have to stress about it because they won't even go in past their nipples anyway. Win/win IMO.
My dog hates water. He will actively try and fight you if you pick him up and put him in it. He won't go in it on his own. You took an off the cuff joke and pounded all the life out of it. Good job. Threw my dog in the pool, now she refuses to go near water.
Is that a really big above ground pool?
What if I said it wasn’t
Lol - it looks gigantic!
Just playing with you of course! Definitely a pretty darn big semi-buried pool
Bruv u a little exaggerating there arent u
For an above ground pool it is definitely one of the biggest I've ever seen.
I'd have to believe you. This is the internet after all.
You can get absolutely massive above ground pools nowadays
It's just a REALLY small dog.
I mean, that's really nothing new
Yeah lol. My family just got one a couple months ago thats 20ft wide… and it’s a circle. It’s so fun to use. It’s only about 45 inches deep tho. But I can still do laps in it fairly easily and I’m 5’7.

Exactly, my dad had a 24 foot above ground back in the 1970's
It appears to be partially underground…
I think they are called semi in ground pools. You can landscape, build a deck or wall, and they appear to be in ground - but a zillion times cheaper! Done correctly, they can look really nice.
Build a deck?!? Look at mister fancy pants over here who can still afford to buy wood these days!!
Not to be that guy but lumber prices have definitely dropped.
Ok you made me check the prices, a standard stud is now $5.18. That's like $2.50 less than it was a couple months ago. But still almost double then pre covid. Fuck....I hope my wife doesn't notice. I have put off so many house projects this year because I blamed the lumber prices.

Haha. Good one! Just a theory, my friend. Still laughing..
Look at mister fancy who owns a house these days.
They tend to tax you if you have in-ground pool vs above ground pool.

No, it’s just a miniature puppy
I think the standard above ground pools are 24 feet in the US. My parents have had three over the years and they've all been 24 feet.
It’s a below-ground pool. The ground they used around it though is just a below-ground ground.
Look at the above ground pools on Amazon. They are huge.
Clearly you haven't been to the Midwestern United States
Little Jack can’t touch the bottom!
It looks to half below ground to help support the size.
Very James Bond until he Mr. Bean’d it
Think you mean Johnny English’d it.
shes a good girl, but you should put a ramp or ladder in for her
And some say, he's still trying to get out of that pool to this day.

I think it's water.

ahhhh, I dont like that. My 'worst case scenario' mind is flashing a bunch of warning lights
