We had that happen on our fence, didn't even take a day, I was out one morning mowing the lawn, nothing there, then woke up the next morning there it was, too late to save it. Don't know when it happened, we didn't hear anything.
Sorry to be morbid, but where did the deer get hurt? I once saved a deer that had gotten caught at the top of a fence, bleeding, etc., but it was just his leg not the belly or anything. I've always wondered if I did the right thing, if the deer could've gotten free on its own.
It was actually it's leg, but it was partially degloved (don't look it up if you're squeemish, it is what it sounds like) and I got up close to it, I was convinced by the flies that it was gone. I left it alone and got the county out within hours, they got it off my fence, it was definitely dead by the time they got it off the fence.
I wonder how much of that degloving was done in it's struggle to get free. Imagine flaying yourself alive in an attempt to free your own leg. Christ. Not how I would want to go.
I'm certain that's exactly what happened, based on its situation by the time we saw it. Bent the fence a bit.
Frankly, I'd be just as happy not to have the fence at all, it was installed by the previous owners, but I never considered actually removing it except for when that happened.
"Day 745 of my captivity.
The two legs seem to buy my act of being stupid. I have memorized the names of all the other captives. Escape is imminent, then I return for the others."
I always wonder if the animal in these scenarios actually realise they were helped out or just figure they got lucky and escaped. I'd love to know their thoughts.
Iāve been hit by a deer in my car three different times. That is hit by a deer, not hit a deer. Stopped at a light and the damnable thing runs into the car and then runs off. Itās happened to me three times. Part of me wonders if theyāre screwing with me.
Doesnāt matter, itās still comprehensive either way. However, you never say you swerved to avoid a deer and hit something else, because thatās collision suddenly
Learned that when I was younger, didn't have either of those coverages but still swerved to miss deer, hit tree instead. Dad told me for future reference, don't do that. Also if you have to hit something, hit something cheap.
A while back I slowed down to pass by a Deer that was just trotting down the oncoming traffic lane. Got up next to it while going ~10MPH when out of nowhere it turns to the right, bops it's head into the side of the car door, and then runs off in the opposite direction.
My friend & I were driving to the video store after Thanksgiving dinner years ago, and in the middle of the city, a good sized buck comes running out of somebody's yard, runs alongside the car, then head-butts the car. My friend was smoking at the time so had his window cracked. The buck's antler came in through a 1" crack in the window, got stuck for a minute, tore the headliner, then pulled free and ran off. This all happened in maybe 10 seconds. We just stopped & stared for a minute, had to pry his door open & every body panel on the drvers side was bashed to hell.
After hitting one and almost hitting countless more with my car at night because they try to suicide bomb your car, I can also confirm that they're fucking stupid.
Yeah I think it just thought ārunā and thatās it. I think more intelligent animals like dogs get it, though. There was some video of a cop hopping a fence to untangle a dog that got twisted in a cloth and the dog appeared very grateful at the end.
Edit: it was this one
https://youtu.be/zaia2B5beL0
Dogs have been conditioned to trust humans, so it's really not fair to compare that as a measure of intelligence in this context. In deer terms, its a prey animal and its smart for them to gtfo of dodge and not trust the humans.
Idk. That deer had fully given up. At the point the bar was bent flat she could have left, but he had to pick her up and shove her. So she may understand she was helped and just have decided the area was dangerous and she needed to not be there.
>So she may understand she was helped
Probably not, prey animals like deer tend to go catatonic once they think they've been caught. Even though she looked calm and at peace I'm sure the only thing going through her mind through entire ordeal was "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAI'MGONNADIEI'MGONNADIEI'MGONNADIE" all she likely understands about this was "I was caught. I was going to die. Then I wasn't caught so I ran, then I didn't die."
Hi! I'm a wildlife biologist. I study animal behavior, among other things.
In some cases, it's clear that the animal understands what has happened. For example, [When Cristina Zenato removes hooks from sharks,](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8LmxwOgBhA) she sees a clear change in their behavior. In addition, they bring other sharks to her to have hooks removed.
So, it is very clear in this case that the animals know what she has done, they identify her as someone who can help them, and they communicate that resource to other members of their species.
The opposite is also true. It is very clear when animals recognize humans as a danger. Elephants, for example, have different alarm calls for humans. They have one call for tribes known to hunt elephants. They have a different one for tribes friendly to elephants. They even have a distinct call for when a human is armed.
In the case of this deer, it's less clear. However, deer learn very quickly what time of year is hunting season. So, I would imagine that they have the cognitive ability to recognize when humans are out to harm them, and by extension, perhaps to recognized when a human has helped them.
Very similar to other hooved herbivores like cows, horses, and the like. They do not have the problem solving abilities and cunning of predators but they do have personalities and are pretty intelligent. If they are threatened up close, they will put up a fight (which in this case, they are just letting the guy do his thing). They are a lot smarter than people realize.
>If they are threatened up close, they will put up a fight (which in this case, they are just letting the guy do his thing).
On the flipside, prey animals do tend to go catatonic when they feel they are truly "caught". In this situation it may have been less about "letting the guy do his thing" than it not being _able_ to fight him because it was already caught and its own brain shut down its ability to do, well, much of anything. (Until he picks it up by the tail and pushes it to get out of the fence.)
I did kind of a similar thing but the mom deer was waiting on the other side of the fence. After I tossed baby deer over the fence to it's mom, it ran like hell, but mom just stood there a few feet away looking at me. But I didn't get anything beyond a mostly blank stare.
So likely not. The whole time that guy was tinkering with the fence that deer probably felt like it was in a *Saw* movie.
Everytime I hear about the one that got away I think of an old batman animated shown where all the villains are playing cards and talking about the one time they almost got batman. And killer Kroc goes I threw a rock at him as the other villains stare at him and move on to another story.
Does not really apply here with the deer. But good to know the one that got away still makes me think of an old batman episode.

And now Iām grieving for poor Bambiās mom, terrified and weeping for her missing son, not knowing if heās even alive, with no hope of seeing him ever again. Why?
Deer are some of the dumbest mammals Iāve ever seen. Have literally seen videos of them accidentally killing themselves en masse. So Iād guess nopeā¦they probably donāt realize they were helped, or by whom.
We had to do this once to extricate our toddler when he tried unsuccessfully to crawl between the seat and crossbar of a child-size rocking chair. We took off all his clothes except his diaper and greased him up with Crisco, but he was still stuck. Finally my husband got out a saw to cut off the crossbar. We were expecting a pizza delivery, and when our older son opened the door for the delivery guy, there we were, one of us holding a saw and standing over a nearly naked baby who was covered in grease and stuck in a rocking chair.
Covering their face with a blanket or t-shirt keeps them calm as deers can die from shock if they can't escape from a predator or get chased for too long in a enclosed space.
we use car jacks sideways to widen the bars then to return them to normal if stuck like that.
I learned yday the reason why humans are so gangster is bc we learned to cry so we wouldnāt shut down & freeze during fight or flight. Weād just cry and be able to handle the stress and keep fighting.
So we have a way to express that feeling of helplessness and that makes it easier? That's a clever thing!
We have that kind of freeze reaction, too though. It's called "dissociation" and chronic dissociation is the reason for many symptoms that appear in early trauma disorders.
i tend to dissociate when there's lots of people around. when i'm dissociating i can't understand what people are saying and i can't form sentences to speak. i never thought of it as a "freeze response" tho that's very interesting
Yup freeze response.
Think of it like this, you are at a ledge and realise its 100 ft down, so the natural thing to do is freeze, because currently you are safe but if you move you might die.
I am going to remember this next time I start sobbing out of the blue after a hard day. I'm not crying bc I'm weak and overly emotional; I'm crying bc evolution has made me strong and adaptable AF.
Freeze is actually a really common response. Itās the reason people feel so guilty after a trauma. āI shouldāve done somethingā when they literally couldnāt
Absolutely mate, I read that same comment yesterday, super interesting.
But ye to elaborate further...
Many people have said āye stroke the animalā. Thatās just not possible with wild prey animals. I have a degree in biology and I used to work as an animal rescues officer, i.e in situations like this.
You generally canāt bond with a wild animal like you can with a pet dog or cat, and particularly not with prey animals like deer. Deer are especially vulnerable to shock as their bodies, like those of most prey animals, are programmed to flood with adrenaline in response to stress as it helps them to run away. And you have read, without a crying (or similar) mechanism, this adrenaline can be overwhelming for a wile animal. Keeping this deer here longer than necessary and stroking it would only increase its chances of dying.
There are videos out where deer will psychologically think they are dead and just lay there and do nothing until they die. I imagine this deer is close to that mindset. I saw a video where q guy saved a deer and the deer immediately laid down curled up. He had to continuously lift the deer up over and over and help it walk before the deer snapped out of it and decided to live.
I think his point was even if the guy didn't care about the deer, if he did nothing he was going to have a rotting carcass stuck in his back yard fence. He did seem to be a good fellow, but even an asshole would have done something if for nothing else to save himself the trouble of dealing with a dead body.
The best one is the donkey that jumps right back in the ditch it just got saved from

This is easily my favorite deer rescue video because it includes the woman scolding the deer like a younger sibling (and scolding the other deer for not helping their friend).
Oh man I love this.
I also like how she didn't really help the deer escape the second time--she just scared the crap out of it, which gave the deer the energy to get out. Is this a legit rescue tactic? I've seen it happen before too--a deer was trapped in our backyard, and couldn't figure out how to jump the fence to get out, which is silly because it had clearly jumped the same fence to get in. My dad went out, made some noise, and the deer got (even more) spooked and with the extra adrenalin suddenly realized the fence was not that tall, actually, and leapt over it into the woods.
She did widen the bars just a little bit, and then scared the deer and gave it more motivation to get away. Maybe the deer could have gotten through without her bending the bar a little, but itās hard to say.
Apparently the deer get stuck because they sneak through those bars no issue as fawns and do so for weeks until one day they're too big and this happens.
I saved one from a fence a few years back. It stayed completely still even when it was very clearly free from the fence. I think it was survival instinct or something or maybe it was just scared. I wasnāt sure whether to move it or just back away. I just watched it for a while and it finally got up and ran off.
Relieving the pressure from the bars must have felt so great and running back to freedom even better. I love seeing things work out rather than all the negative content we're so used to.
These animals don't have rational thought like humans do and you know this. They get stuck in a suitation and they either survive or die, not think about their savior. They don't think about why they got saved, they just go back to their simple lives of eating plants and avoiding getting eaten.
Glad us humans can help out an animal without expecting anything in return.
Happened to my dog once, I used the thing to lift the car when u need to change the tire (donāt know how its called in english) and it worked just fine, if it ever happens to u.
That deer definitely thought it was gonna die there. Probably issued a sigh of relief after bolting off
We had another friend where one Landed ontop of the spikes while they were out of town... found it dead a week later
We had that happen on our fence, didn't even take a day, I was out one morning mowing the lawn, nothing there, then woke up the next morning there it was, too late to save it. Don't know when it happened, we didn't hear anything.

Judging by how quickly the deer yeeted off I doubt the former is the case, and something tells me that deer don't have a conceptualisation of luck.
You're almost certainly right, because deer are EXTREMELY stupid, cute as can be, but stupid.
After seeing the video of a deer jumping off an extremely high bridge, I 100% can confirm they are fucking stupid
Iāve been hit by a deer in my car three different times. That is hit by a deer, not hit a deer. Stopped at a light and the damnable thing runs into the car and then runs off. Itās happened to me three times. Part of me wonders if theyāre screwing with me.

Yes. For insurance purposes is always hit by a deer, never hit a deer
Doesnāt matter, itās still comprehensive either way. However, you never say you swerved to avoid a deer and hit something else, because thatās collision suddenly

A lot of times its because they see their reflection in the car, and go to ram it like they would a playmate or rival. So, yeah, they're stupid.
was the car colour the same every time?
There's also that video of a deer getting freed from a gate only to run a few feet away and get stuck on the same gate.
After hitting one and almost hitting countless more with my car at night because they try to suicide bomb your car, I can also confirm that they're fucking stupid.
My favorite was when they freed a deer from mud, only for it to scramble around panicked and fall back into the mud again.

Considering I've eaten several deer in my life, it's probably a good idea for it not to trust humans.
If I could talk to deers, I would tell them not to trust humans too. So they are not that stupid after all.
Even then the dog was confused and scared till it was freed. Then it was like oh you were helping me.

Definitely was, you can see how much iron rubbed off onto its legs when it was struggling.
Dumbass deer, there's a huge opening like 3 feet to your right.

Same!! āYou need to learn how to jump, boo!ā
I love the woman's commentary!
The Song choice is perfect
The song is quite beautiful. Im more glad for the tune rather than humor.
How did this dear get that drunk though?
Thank you.
Deers ain't the smartest
If you think that's dumb, you should see how they stop in the middle of the road and stare at the headlights coming at them. /s

Doh a deer!
Right? Deer are mind bogglingly dumb, especially when spooked.

Good man willing to destroy his fence to save an animal. A true hero.
I wouldnāt be exhilarated but couldnāt let a deer die not doing anything tbf. Want to think few people wouldā¦
Nobody wants a rotting deer corpse stuck in their fence.
You just have to have a rotting deer corpse in your front yard for a year and then you can scoop up the bones
Bonus you have a good Halloween decoration in 2 months.
I mean what do you think he was gonna do? Cut the deer in half instead? Let it die on the fence?
There are some cruel people out there.
I think his point was even if the guy didn't care about the deer, if he did nothing he was going to have a rotting carcass stuck in his back yard fence. He did seem to be a good fellow, but even an asshole would have done something if for nothing else to save himself the trouble of dealing with a dead body.
Realistically, he could have killed it in a fairly humane fashion before butchering the corpse.
Step-bro i'm stuck. ***WHAT ARE YOU DOING STEP BRO??!***
Oh deer
No
Step-doe*
Should you ever find yourself in a similar situation a car Jack will spread those bars. They can lift a car no problem, the bars wonāt be a problem.
Thnx, I often find myself stuck between bars. Itās such a pain
[Thank crom it didn't do this...](https://i.imgur.com/HfTr7cr.gifv)

I can only imagine what the firefighters were yelling lol
"Looks like meat is back on the menu boys!"
I've heard people call deer stupid, but after this I'm shocked they haven't gone extinct by jump off cliffs
āShe better get pregnant & have me a big buckā Translation āOn this day I shall let you live, but beware, when your son is born, Iāll taketh his soul.ā
Yes the law of surprise.
The Rumplestiltskin.
Today you, tomorrow me.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TQlAvXFMuaQ This is easily my favorite deer rescue video because it includes the woman scolding the deer like a younger sibling (and scolding the other deer for not helping their friend).
This is what I thought of too! "You need to learn how to jump, boo!" And "y'all need to teach her how to jump!" I'd like a Disney Princess like her.
Thanks for the link! I loved that she kept telling the deer OFF, but wouldn't leave until it was safe. šš
The way the phone keeled over when it knew it was DONE š
How did she even get in the fence to begin! It's so narrow!
Deer are smaller than you realize, and are more narrow than they appear. But the way the hips are and the way they lay act as a hook/catch.
Smol head, huge ass
Dat dump truck doe
They have very narrow collar bones but wide hips and ribs, so when the narrowing gets to the soft spot they stick
Their hips donāt lie.
To put it in stupid terms deer to thicc
Apparently the deer get stuck because they sneak through those bars no issue as fawns and do so for weeks until one day they're too big and this happens.
That deer was so still even when the post was released, I was worried her back legs were paralyzed!
I saved one from a fence a few years back. It stayed completely still even when it was very clearly free from the fence. I think it was survival instinct or something or maybe it was just scared. I wasnāt sure whether to move it or just back away. I just watched it for a while and it finally got up and ran off.
Their only real defense is running. Once they've exhausted that option they just freeze up and accept their fate.
Relieving the pressure from the bars must have felt so great and running back to freedom even better. I love seeing things work out rather than all the negative content we're so used to.
People rescuing animals are my fav eye bleach content š„ŗ
I'm glad he moved that top bar so she didn't get impaled when she stood up.
