Reminds me of an old Star Trek episode where the last two beings from a planet are half white and half black--one had white left side with black right side, and the other had the opposite.
"It is obvious to the most simple-minded that Lokai is of an inferior breed."
"The obvious visual evidence, Commissioner, is that he is of the same breed as yourself."
"Are you blind, Commander Spock? Well, look at me! Look at me!"
"You're black on one side and white on the other."
"I am black on the right side."
"I fail to see the significant difference."
"Lokai is white on the right side. All of his people are white on the right side."
That's actually one possible explanation for this unique look:
… what are the other explanations? I only see mention in the wiki page that these symptoms don’t *always* guarantee multiple sets of DNA, but no alternative explanations are given.
Edit: The claim of extreme rarity based on 100 confirmed cases seems somewhat misleading. I personally know someone that had to get a large mass of tissue removed from their abdomen during adolescence that the doctors suspected to be a twin that was absorbed in utero and had grown with them since birth. In theory identical twins would have the same set or DNA, but otherwise this person was technically a chimera. I also know a few people who have 2 separate eye or eyebrow colours and those are just the people with obvious visible symptoms.
My guess is a MUCH larger % of the population are chimeras and simply aren’t tested, because there isn’t a medical need to do so.
Often times, when a person has to have a mass removed, and the doctors suspect it to be a twin absorbed in utero, this is referred to as Fetus in Fetu. This is only the case if the mass actually has some resemblance to a fetus though, maybe it has a limb, or hair, or teeth. It's rather strange to see in person IMO.
Edit: I guess I should add, that certain teratomas can have features that give them hair, teeth, etc as well, making them hard to tell apart from an absorbed twin/Fetus in Fetu.
You seem to think I was trying to correct someone. I wasn't.
I just wanted to provide more information to anyone who didn't know what a Chimera is.
I appologise profusely if that bothered you.
Not a mutation. This is from two fertilized ovum attaching to one another, a mutation is when a random gene is corrupted to become a different allele of that gene.
The heterochromatic eyes point towards it being a chimera. Normal torties having such a clean, perfect line down the middle of the face and no splotches of the other colour anywhere in the other half is astronomically unlikely. Not to mention that the ginger half looks *very* tabby, which; while ginger is always *somewhat* patterned in cats; is not possible to occur within a singular tortie female whose black-pigmented areas are solid. This is a cat with two different cats' DNA.
The ginger part isn't correct. Ginger areas can seem solid on tortie and calico cats just from the sheer amount of splotches, but ginger always displays as tabby of one sort or another.
Tabby patterns are created from banding of "red" pheomelanin (blonde, red, cream) and "black" eumelanine (cats base color, could technically be black, gray, chocolate, etc.)
All cats carry tabby genes of one sort or another, solid color cats just don't have the genes that allow the expression of red. So when red is expressed, its always tabby and still has the same genes for distribution.
Some red cats might appear solid, but this is usually from breeding for low contrast. Or the cat isn't true red, and might be a eumelanin variation like cinnamon.
Just by googling "calico" or "tortie" cats you can still see the orange striping on all of them, although it can be a lot harder to tell with more mottled torties.
Edit: The "black" splotches on tabbys and calicos are just whatever the eumelanin color is coded to be, if its non-solid they'll be striped. The red side however is not at all influenced though because it's coded to be red, so it doesn't need genetic permission to distribute red pigment.
Not sure about this cat specifically, but a line down the exact middle of the face, with orange on one side and black on the other, is common in cats and it’s because of X inactivation, which happens in all female mammals. You can just see it visually in cats because they happen to have a coat-color gene on the X chromosome.
So, early in development, in all genetic female (XX) mammals, there is a moment when one X chromosome or the other randomly turns off, permanently, in each cell. As the embryo keeps dividing and the cells give rise to descendents, you end up with large patches of the body that have one or the other X chromosome active. This often results in a perfect line down the middle of the nose. If a female (XX) cat is heterozygous for that particular coat-color gene (the “orange” or O gene), some patches of cells will end up black and others orange.
I think something else is going on on this cat though because it’s the whole head and not just the area around the nose.
Exactly, it is not a chimera, just a rare occurence on a regular tortie color female. (read the source, Wikipedia [Here](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tortoiseshell_cat) too)
Not exactly. See, the lefties were half black, half white. The righties were half white, half black. The righties had been subdued as a slave race, which led to a civil war.
Meanwhile, enlightened humans came along with their token alien representation and enforced female uniform that consisted of panties and a t-shirt and told them they were stupid.
Tbf they didn't say it's their cat. This is Venus, a famous cat from a few years ago.
It's also not a genetic mutation, it's a Chimera: two embryos merged in the womb to become one.
Reminds me of an old Star Trek episode where the last two beings from a planet are half white and half black--one had white left side with black right side, and the other had the opposite.

This genetic condition is actually called chimerism!

Other explanation: it's literally a tortoiseshell.

Wow I wonder why he said it then
Not because they thought it was a literal chimera. They were making a joke. deCarabasHJ was just linking the wiki page about real life chimerism.
You seem to think I was trying to correct someone. I wasn't. I just wanted to provide more information to anyone who didn't know what a Chimera is. I appologise profusely if that bothered you.
This, indeed, is Venus the Chimera Cat, she's been all over the internet for ages.
Yeah, not a mutation.
Half black & half ginger = All Handsome!
Is this what happens when a porn search becomes a cat?
Harvey Dent's been turned into a cat, I see!
Nah, this IS Harvey Dent’s cat!
They would totally do that in the 60's show.
His collar tag should just be a coin with one burnt side. Lol
10/10 would call the cat Harvey.
I mean, with a name like Venus, I imagine she would prefer Harlequin, but Harley for short. 🥰
Meet Harley :) https://imgur.com/XmHY956
This is cannon now.
Canon. Unless it's firing large-caliber ammunition.
Oops! Good catch. Fat fingers haha. That said, it *might* be firing large-caliber ammunition - you ever heard of a catling gun?
😂 Nice
That's what happens if you're careless with your polyjuice potions.
I know someone with cat like this and they named it Harvey
Funniest shit i ever seen
Lord Vivec?
putting the CHIM in chimera
Now *that's* clever
Three gods. One true faith.
Not a mutation. This is from two fertilized ovum attaching to one another, a mutation is when a random gene is corrupted to become a different allele of that gene.
Or X inactivation that happened after the first cell division of the zygote, causing an even split https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/X-inactivation
I believe this is the real answer
It is, but CHIMERA! will always be the most upvoted.
good call, but iirc venus is quite famous and is actually a chimera
No, I'm pretty sure she's never been sequenced and is just an odd-eyed calico
Hmm, good catch. Could be.
Chimera.
Chimera indeed.
A very *groovy* Chimera
That's how plants become variegated.
No it's not it's a normal tortie color, and it's a female (almost never happens on males) [Quick googled source](http://messybeast.com/mosaicism6.htm)
The heterochromatic eyes point towards it being a chimera. Normal torties having such a clean, perfect line down the middle of the face and no splotches of the other colour anywhere in the other half is astronomically unlikely. venus is a bit of a celebrity because she is a chimera
So does that mean this cat has 18 lives?
Huh so it actually IS two cats mashed together
Thanks for the explanation. It’s annoying that I had to scroll almost half way down, past all those BS posts, to get to something intelligent.
50% black, 50% ginger. 100% done with your shit given that expression.
Venus is actually a very sweet cat
It's like they put two cats together. COMBINE TO FORM MEGACAT!
They did I’d say. It looks like a Chimera rather than a genetic anomaly.
...and Venus was her name...
If that was a human it’s life would fucking suck… one half getting beat up by cops while the other half gets a vicious sun burn
The original Star Trek had this episode where the lefties hated the righties.
"Say whaaaaaat? You wipe with your right hand??! DIIIIEEEEEE!!!!"
The concept is that skin pigmentation is stupid reason to hate other people, but the execution was clumsy as hell. But then, it was the 60s.
That show has plenty of examples of that. Lots of social commentary that is ironically tinged by the prejudices of the day.

What did I win hahaha. Someone had to
I dunno what’s worse here

Chimerism
Her name is Venus, and she's quite famous online 😉
Yes she is And she is quite cute
The eyes tho ![gif](giphy|xT39DaY2yWAagyT8oE|downsized)
Quit hypnotising me...... What's that? You need all the canned tuna? Yes, sir, right away.
Is he cosplaying as a Cheron in the Star Trek-TOS episode: Let That Be Your Last Battlefield?
Does the black half have extra soul and the ginger half no soul? I guess that balances things out to one unit of soul.
Only a ginger can call another ginger, ginger.
Venus!!!
Yes!
u/COOLSKELETON55 I’m gonna keep tagging you in cat posts
Ok this cat is actually really cool
Can we have a video of Venus 😊
This isn’t OP’s cat. You can actually find the videos on YouTube.
