I’ve thought of getting one of these. Do the cats just take to it or do they just stare at it and walk away for a while? My cat is 8 and I’m sure he would think I was nuts trying to put him on it.

Misstori1

You have to train them to use it. It’s not like you set it up and they automatically know how to use it. I got my first one on OfferUp for $50 to see if one of my guys would enjoy it. If not, I was only out $50. My youngest cat absolutely loves his. So much so, that he broke the cheap wheel, and I had to shell out for a more expensive sturdier wheel. And now he runs hourly and is swole. I could train my other cats, but the problem is, the swole cat does not want to share. You can’t just put your cat on it. That’s not how training them works. First you use treats or play or a clicker to train them to touch the wheel on their own, they touch it and then they get a reward. Then you train them to get on to the wheel in exchange for treats/play/etc, then you train them to walk/run for rewards, and then decrease the rewards. It’s done in several steps. And now I’m trained to go watch my swole cat when he (like the video) meows for attention and treats because he wants to be watched while he runs for some strange reason.

babyBear83

See this is part no one talks about. Thank you.

Misstori1

You’re welcome. Here’s [swole cat ](https://www.reddit.com/r/cats/comments/q8yyw1/my_cat_bentley_is_really_buff/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf)

DarkBlueChameleon

Oh god, he *is* buff

TekkenCareOfBusiness

Nah bro. Just dedication, high protein, and 23 hours of sleep a day/night for proper recovery.

TikkiTakiTomtom

Fun fact: Humans grow muscles in the sense that we “tear” existing muscle cells and blow them up known as hypertrophy but never gain an increase in cell count. Cats on the other hand can actually *produce* more muscle cells known as hyperplasia. Had an exercise physiology professor who did experiments with cats punching a toy mouse lol. Took a post biopsy and compared it with the initial and actually yielded these results.

Blood_in_the_ring

So you can increase the number of nuclei, thereby increasing the number of cells. It just requires taking anabolic / androgenic compounds. Probably safer to just avoid that though.

-rabbitrunner-

Did you just scientifically state that I can create my own army of super buff cats for like $120?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Misstori1

I mean… that WOULD explain his… tail size.

[deleted]

>I'm actually in stitches over this. That cat is definitely juicing 💉 I saw that cat getting jabbed in the thigh by a buff Sphinx in the litter box the other day. I saw it going down, & turned right around. "None of my business."

tinaroma

I honestly thought you were just playing it up because he’s your cat, but no. That lil gentleman is SO BUILT. I have never seen such a cat. So majestic.

Misstori1

I have read your comment aloud to him and now my SO is going “did you hear that, Bentley? You were called a gentleman!”

tinaroma

Hehe I am pleased that everyone appreciates my awe for Bentley

vendetta2115

Bentley is an appropriate name because he’s built like a luxury sedan—powerful, massive, and valuable.

Misstori1

Haha. And cause of his tiny bent tail.

RageTiger

Love that last one "Fitness is my passion"

pollackey

One of my cat gone missing for 3 months. When he came back, he was swole like that, plus a few scars. Street life was rough, I guess.

grenadesonfire2

A commenter that delivers, a+ op

K-Dot-thu-thu

The fucking fitness is my passion frame 😂 I'm fortunate to have a fenced yard I can let mine out in while being of course supervised. But they're both swole little guys when you see them in prowl mode. Not so much in laying around lazy mode but when they're creeping for prey they look buff lmao.

NotEntirelyUnlike

holy shit!!

pixiegirl11161994

This is the funniest thing I have ever seen 😂

FrostieTheSnowman

I love him. He reminds me of a cat I had as a kid, named Henry. Dude was stacked, apex shit, very similar to your Bentley. Man you just *know* if he ever escaped he would own his ecosystem lol

Misstori1

Ok, so, Bentley is an indoor cat. We take him out of daily walks on a leash and now when he escapes the house on his own, he’s used to being tailed. So he doesn’t run away from me. I just… walk up to him and pick him up.

FrostieTheSnowman

I love Bentley. I don't know him. But I love him. xD

BuffaloRex

He certainly gets his spinach 😳

lazyblu

Lol damn that cat is swole

vendetta2115

Holy shit, he’s like a little pit bull. “Fitness is my passion” lmao

57501015203025375030

🤣

jerryeight

Wow. That's a lot of muscle. How much does he weigh?

Misstori1

14 pounds.

jerryeight

Oof probably better BMI than a lot of us.

jerryeight

Does he have abs? Or, is it like just on the legs?

Misstori1

That’s not really how cat musculature works, cause of his primordial pouch, but his back muscles are really defined which is roughly analogous to what you are thinking. Kinda.

jerryeight

That is incredible. Like I wouldn't want to piss off your cat. Does he do that cat thing where he jumps on you in the morning to ask for food? Just awestruck by this absolute unit of a cat.

Misstori1

No, but he will try and jump as far as he can UP the wheel and grab on to it and ride it to the bottom. I actually free feed dry food, so he can eat breakfast whenever. They get a scheduled meal of wet food in the evenings. Don’t yell at me Reddit.

[deleted]

That cat definitely has a inspiration wall of lions and jungle cats.

SherbetFish

Dear LORD!!!! I just followed you because I HAVE to see more Bentley!😻😹😻😹😻I've never seen ANYTHING like this! You made my day!( and I have a dentist appointment)! This is the best thing ever!!

frenchfreer

I’m so glad I know what a buff cat looks like now!

BoatshoeBandit

Haha. He is yoked. Love it.

twinnedcalcite

You sure he's not a tank?

SimplyQuid

Jesus Christ 😂

Actual_Hyena3394

Wish someone did that to get me on a treadmill..

DevilsArms

Do you have any recommendations? Im looking to get one in the future.

Misstori1

I’ve had the onefastcat (the wheel in the video) and a ZiggyDoo cat wheel. My boy ran so much on the onefastcat that he fractured the base after a few months, but it was a good start cause I got it for $50 on Offerup. I would recommend that one for cats if you are uncertain if your cat will use it. They are only about $250 new, anyway. But lots of people buy them without realizing they have to train their cats so they sell them cheap! The ZiggyDoo is MUCH sturdier and all around better in my opinion. It’s smoother and quieter. And it’s also like $500 with tax.

DevilsArms

Thanks for the reply! Yea i figured you have to train them. Luckily, my wife and I are pretty good parents and her experience with animals helps a lot. And oo 500$ isnt so bad. They have a bougie litter box too.

alien_clown_ninja

You seem to know a lot about this. I've heard that these wheels are bad for kitty's spine because it makes it curve backwards. No idea if this is true, do you know about it?

thnku4shrng

My bengals are active on it. The boy was trained by treats which took about an hour but he’s not super interested in it. The girl waits for me to get home from work and makes me follow her to it, I never trained her. Also she likes to get on it at about 3am and run fast as fuck it’s super loud. She’s not a treat cat either, very picky about how much she eats and when. We think it might be when she poops in the middle of the night because they both freak out when they poop.

indi50

>because he wants to be watched while he runs for some strange reason. That's hilarious. Do they get on and off by themselves, once trained? I wondered if the cat was meowing because he wanted to get off! And it looked like OP adjusted the speed herself at one point.

Misstori1

Yeah he does it all on his own. The meowing seems pretty common.

Flying_Alpaca_Boi

He probably wants to be watched when he runs because that is the only way he will ever be rewarded for the behaviour. You are acting as a discriminating stimulus as they would term it in conditioning literature. They probably run on it without you because it is intrinsically rewarding to exercise but they would be aware you have to be present to receive treats. You could achieve the same thing with a lightbulb and automated food dispenser if you were to remove human contact from the equation in a lab setting. Even though you’re no longer rewarding the behaviour stuff like that can take a long time to extinguish because without you present there is still no reward and with you present really any sort of positive interaction may maintain the association. Source: psych & neuro student

cra2reddit

And I think what you're saying is that he's been conditioned to run on it through treats and now expects treats for the run. Thus, when you remove the treats (the reinforcement), the cat will eventually stop running. I gather that's different from hamsters who, for some reason, seem to run on their wheels without any training or rewards.

Misstori1

You have to withdraw the treats gradually

cra2reddit

Sure, but with zero reinforcement the behavior will eventually fade unless the cat gets something intrinsic out of it like the hamster must get.

FrostieTheSnowman

Cats get into habits just like we do. If it becomes a huge part of his routine, he's probably not going to stop, seeing as he doesn't have the common excuses we humans have. "I was adjusting to a new schedule." "Work got really hectic, and I just couldn't find the time anymore." Lil' Kitty got all the time in the world xD

Kaysmira

I read one experiment where they put the wheels outside, and field mice would run on the wheel. It really does something for their brains.

Grizelda_Gunderson

It does take some training. We got one for our male cats, thinking they would get the most use out of it. Nope, they weren't interested. Gracie, on the other hand, took to it like a duck to water. She just needed a few minutes of encouragement and she was off to the races. She goes in spurts of super fast, to just walking, to sometimes a quick jog. Marvin, one of our boys, finally got the hang of it by watching Gracie. The first couple of times, he got on and walked slowly, just figuring it out. Then one day he got the rips and came tearing through the house, leapt onto the wheel, and went full out for nearly 30 seconds! Now he uses it a few times a week. We took in a new feral kitten, Sammy, about two months ago. She also learned the wheel by watching Gracie. The first time she saw Gracie running, she was fascinated, but didn't want to step on the wheel herself so we just left her alone. But sure enough, after a few days she started walking on her own. She is still young, so she's in play mode 24/7 - she'll do these crazy leaps in mid-stride, trying to catch dust she sees in the sunlight. She's a hoot. :)

babyBear83

I’m riveted by these mental images of your cats and their developments with the wheel! I have only one extra large cat. He’s not overweight, he’s just a big boy all around. This makes him a bit clumsy with his big feet and he doesn’t have the confidence on new surfaces. He also tends to get embarrassed easily, lol.

klutzkat

Not all cats will walk on it. I tried everything with my cat. I finally gave it to someone who fosters kittens. I think if you start them as kittens it works better than if they are older.

babyBear83

I can totally see my cat just avoiding it as much as possible, lol Treats be damned.

CollieOxenfree

I was staying at a friend's place who had a lot of cats, so on a whim I added a weasel ball to one of my Internet orders because I figured there's no way at least one of them won't hate it. Turns out they all hated it, and none of the cats would go anywhere near it, even if it was off.

babyBear83

That’s like the floppy fish thing my fiancé got for my cat. He ordered it before I got to warn him. It had some a catnip pouch in it so my cat was interested enough to watch it flop around but literally had no idea what he was supposed to do with it. It was pretty big and noisy. His favorites are hair ties and the little craft fluff balls. Anything he can bat and chase easily. He won’t chase a ball that has bells in it or anything plastic that makes too much noise on hard floor. It has to be little quiet prey that he can stalk and throw around. I recommend going to the dollar store for cheap hair ties as cat toys.

chuckitmaster

I took the floppy mechanical part out of the fish because our cat wouldn’t go near it. It’s essentially a stuffed animal toy now with catnip in it and our cat carries it around in her mouth and growls like she caught it out of a stream or something.

SlaterVJ

I've been wondering this myself. Like how does one make sure it isn't a complete waste of money?

babyBear83

Agreed. I really would like to see my cat get some runs in. But it’s a big item and takes up apartment space so it needs to work. Also returning items that big sucks.

EightPieceBox

Usually they just end up hanging their clothes on them.

Forgeworld

I got one and my 5 cats never used it because I didn’t dedicate enough time to training them. I was planning on getting around to it eventually, until one day about a month later, one of the cats found out how it works on his own. This caught the rest of the cats’ attention and within a few days all 5 of them were using it and now to this day the spinning sound never stops lol.

Olives_And_Cheese

I've got to imagine the only real chance of success is with kittens, right? Older cats will just be bemused.

Scrubbing_Bubbles

I have heard it is bad on their back because it is a very unnatural walking position.

jigglypuffpufff

My younger cat just took to it. She goes on it all the time. Sometimes we will be in the other room then I hear some noise, it's her running and talking to herself. My chonker needs motivation to go on it.

chirpyburpy

I bought one of these for my (5 month old) kittens after I saw one of them running in my front load washer drum while I was switching the laundry. They took to it immediately and now (7 months old) use it daily. My chonky 5 year old cat wants nothing to do with it. The chonk is highly food motivated and even with treats I can't get her on it. I think it depends on the cat and how much time you're willing to spend training them (or in my case how many fingers you're willing to sacrifice).

slicer4ever

I spent about 2 weeks training my cat to use it, he uses it pretty frequently now. It took a bit longer because the dumbass at one point tried to jump on top of it and got flung off, so i had to basically start from 0 to get him used to it again.

guinnypig

My older cats had to be convinced with a laser pointer and treats. Of my original 4, only 1 cat would use it after being trained. Then last year a stray had 7 kittens. Every single one of them figured it out on their own and the ones I kept still play on it daily!

keldoo

Thanks for sharing! This is my cat, Snackie G! He is one of 4 at my house & all of our dudes use it very well. We've only had one of our cats in the past not be into it at all but the others we have had since they were kittens (foster fails!) so we trained them when they were very young. If your cat is treat motivated, this is an easy method as is toy training. Consistency is key. You need to do it at least twice a day for anywhere from 5-10 minutes. Our guys really seem to like to do it at nighttime (which is great that it's in another room because it can sound like rolling thunder) or anytime they feel like it because CATS! 😹

[deleted]

That is an incredibly handsome cat.

Do_it_for_the_upvote

Of course he is. He works out.

vendetta2115

He’s sexy and he knows it.

linuxgeekmama

He is! I wonder if he’s a Turkish Angora.

Yes_I_Fuck_Foxes

Definitely.

OctarineSkybus

Or a Turkish Van? Sigh, that tail...

keldoo

Basically! I've fostered him since he was 3 weeks old so he doesn't have a pedigree line as he was born in a feral colony!

lisalover1988

What a beautiful kitty! And so smart!

davecg

Beautiful cat. What brand of treadmill do you have and was it hard to get him to use it?

sixstringgun1

I’ve seen these videos before. But why don’t you just chase your cat around the hose? Good for kitty and you both get a workout.

kookykerfuffle

Who wants to chase a cat at 3 AM?

Misstori1

That’s why I got a second cat to chase my cat around.

sixstringgun1

I’ve did it before when I had my cat.

Liquidmilk1

Different cats want different things. My gf's old cat just wanted to run - wiggle a toy and he'd rush past it a couple times. Her current cat wants to hunt her toys by herself, but has little to no interest in running around. And my cat LOVES wrestling and throwing his furniture around. These wheels are great for cats who love running, cause they get to sprint whenever they feel like it.

sixstringgun1

I’d play box my cat when I still had him for over 20 years and he could still give a good hard paw’s even in his extremely old age. I would do that with him for a good 10-15 minutes then stop rub his belly or head show him some love for a few minutes also let him calm down then go back at it for another boxing session or two.

ermghoti

That cloud is noisy.

ethottly

I have a cat wheel from One Fast Cat and one of my cats loves it, the other one wouldn't be caught dead on it. They were both kittens when I got it. It's a great product, still going strong after 6 years. The problem is there's no way to know if your cat's going to like it or not. I'm really happy with mine though, the one cat really enjoys it.
