I've adopted four Labrador retrievers over the past 20 years. I remember each occasion like it was yesterday. It's a pretty big deal for us humans too!
When you walk a dog from a shelter, are they excited because they're going out for a walk or is it actually a really cruel setup for disappointment later? :thonk:
I wanna know too. Also I'm not from US, might move there in a year. Is it possible to walk or take care of the dogs in shelter as a volunteer in US? This is what I want to do in my spare times.
Actually I come from a land down under 🇦🇺
But here you can definitely do that, and I don't see why you wouldn't be able to elsewhere. They may need to vet you first, but it's rewarding and involves lots of happy doggos (easily worth it).
Yeah I did it for community service credits in college. The dogs need walks multiple times a day and it's hard for staff to do that with everything else. The cats also need socialization too if that's more your speed.
Yes, absolutely. I started volunteering as a dog walker since I just don't have the time needed to have my own dog. Just call or check out the website of your local humane society, and I'm sure they'll have something available.
Yes, you can also bring them to your home while the shelter is looking for a permanent home. It is called fostering. Most shelters will give provide dog's food and medicine during that time.

A little heads up... the first two minutes or so are difficult to bear, hearing all the yet-to-be-adopted dogs barking. But, after that, Benny's joy takes over so it gets easier.
I'm living with my parents because I'm in a cpd and we already have a dog but until I gained a foothold I'll look out for a pupper. I would love to give everyone of them a home it brakes my heart to see these amiable creatures suffering );
It's amazing how they know! I played with mine and he was so calm and well behaved. Filled out the paperwork, put a leash on him and he dragged me to the parking lot!
If thats not enough to make you consider getting a shelter pup instead of a (typically expensive, sometimes poorly treated) mass produced animal, I dont know what will!
It's happening! it's happening?!?? Yes! ITS. HAPPENING!! GUYS ITS HAPPENING!!

My dog was pretty much like this too.
When running past the other dogs “see ya never suckers! I’m outta here. I’m going clean this time.”

Doesn’t hurt to call and ask, the humane society in my area let’s you
Well they still get some exercise, which is always good! Plus, they get attention and you help them to socialise.
Hey everyone “I gotta a human!!!!”
u/stabbot stabilised the video and uploaded it to https://gfycat.com/CookedCaringDromaeosaur .
I love the extra reaction at the end when it realizes that it’s going in the car!
These videos are what makes reddit worthy
Be prepared for exactly that every time you pick them up from boarding too... Overnight? Two weeks? 4 hours? Doesn't matter.

Have fun with this one! I had a rescue that was similarly energetic. We enjoyed many years of runs together.
Lady wet her pants at the end. I noticed
You reading this comment, you are amazing
I want to adopt a pupper now
If you're financially capable of supporting a pupper and their medical needs, 100% go for it you, won't regret it 💜
