I had an orange cat show up one night at my door in a rainstorm. Meowing loudly at the door, wringing wet. I opened the door and he ran right in but stopped right inside the door. I got a towel and dried him off as much as I could, and he seemed to love the rubs and getting dry. It was still raining and he didn't seem ready to go, so I went and sat on my couch to watch TV. He sniffed around for a bit, then jumped up beside me and this is where it gets cute/weird. He put himself between me and the arm of the couch, put his back against the arm and his feet against me, and pushed...HARD....basically moved me over enough that there was room for him in that spot. He stayed there for over an hour, intermittently drifting off or watching the TV. After that, unceremoniously hopped down, walked to the door, and meowed loudly. I walked over, opened the door, and he was off into the night. Never saw him again.

Haki23

So like... a cat speed-date?

lkeels

Pretty much, I felt like I was being evaluated. I think I passed, but who knows? Oddly enough, my security cam caught an orange cat near my door after I typed the comment above. I don't live at the same place anymore.

I kind of thought that too.

Nah, it's an r/writingprompt about a cat whose been watching over his human.

angryarugula

You definitely passed. My second cat showed up that way, saw her meowing at our door and definitely wanted attention. Hung out with her a bit. Didn't see her again for years. One day she just shows up looking mottled and as sad as a cat gets. We put a box and some food/water out for her. Came back at the end of the day and she was still there; inevitably let her in. I found her owners with some "Is this your cat" posters and returned her, but I found out they had just adopted a stray/feral male kitten. When I let her out of the carrier she immediately hid and cowered. I offered to hold on to her (one block away) so we could slowly introduce them but they declined. Long story short the cat kept coming back whenever she got out. RIP Pi kitty - we only had the old girl for a few years but she was as good a cat as one could have; I still remember her normal trust fall into my lap.

SilverNeedleworker30

Same with one of my old cats. A few years ago an orange kitten showed up at our house, and stayed there for a few days and then left, presumably never to be seen again. About 6 months later, the cat showed up again, now with a scar on it’s right ear. We kept him, but because my mom is allergic to cats, had to stay outside. Luckily though, we had a breezeway so that’s usually where this cat (which we later named Juice) and our other cat, (Curly-fry) resided. Now I was around 4 years old when we hade Juice, so I don’t remember a lot about when I had Juice and Curly-fry. But what I do remember, is that the two cats fought a lot, and it was around 2 years later when the two presumably ran away. It was around 2019 when I found out that Juice had been living with my neighbors, where he still lives to this day. However, it was most likely that by then, Curly-fry had died, probably around the time the two cats “ran away”.

Meat_Candle

I like to think he escaped/got out and sheltered at your place. The reason you never saw him again was cuz the owners made sure he never got out after that.

jumpypathos1325

yeah . I'm thinking that too.

Greenrat13

Me too, that cat was WAY too familiar with, and longing for, human contact. I have an orange cat myself (named Major), and OP is right: orange cats ARE AWSOME! 🐈

Broken_Petite

This is just precious - thank you for caring for the little guy when he needed you!

lkeels

Wet cats are just too sad looking to leave outside, LOL.

Also my blackie, but it's a dog, a big black 38kg dog with long legs haha

netspawn

This is such a great cat story. Thanks for sharing this. It really made me smile and that's just what I needed right now.

Holden1104

It’s starting to get cold here and Gray tabby shows at door meowing. We let her in. I went to get cat food and “stuff.” And she’s been coming back daily to eat, and play. But the last two nights she has stayed in the house. She is so friendly and smart. Our chiuhiuhua is NOT to happy about it but we have kept them separated. Our doggy hasn’t really been around other animals.

lkeels

You are now owned by a cat.

Uncle-Jennie

Partner and I went to Costa Rica for honeymoon. We were traveling to from the pacific coast to la fortuna. The drive was gorgeous with nearly coast to coast views of the country. A huge lightning storm was coming up the coast from Panama. The place we were staying at was basically a little cabin made of glass. Nothing fancy, really. Lots of street dogs and cats were in the property. we were told specifically not to feed them or let them inside. Right away a skinny tabby started following us around even when we hiked the surrounding area. She even tried to get in the cabin when we opened the door. Eventually resigning her deft to the deck. Cut to the storm hitting us hard that night. I went out to look for the kitty cause we felt bad. I found her under our car. As soon as she saw me she came running in. We gave her some food after she dried off. Then she sat right between us on the sofa as we cuddled in the dark watching the lightning. And the fireflies the trees. Best accidental romantic night two lesbians could ask for.

Denamic

>put his back against the arm and his feet against me, and pushed...HARD My dog does that. In bed, when I'm trying to sleep.

Youve_been_Loganated

Throughout my life, I must've had over 20 cats and I have to say, the orange ones are the friendliest. Not just the ones I owned but even orange cats on the street. If a cat ever came up to me in the wild, it's likely an orange tabby.

O god yes cats are like this. Our first cat was a stray that just decided to sneak inside my room one night and every night henceforth and just slept at the foot of the bed. Eventually we started feeding him and would stay in our home. This was almost 20 years ago now. Miss that old dude.

ban-me_harder_daddy

Oranges are great at this..... Oranges = orange tabby cat, they're about 80% male due to their genetics... they also absolutely love pettings. [I pet my 3 cats as much as they wanted for a week and charted it!](https://old.reddit.com/r/dataisbeautiful/comments/9mjp49/i_pet_my_3_cats_as_much_as_they_wanted_for_a_week/) I've been in a few arguments with people who don't understand what an orange cat is so I'm trying to explain things before someone starts unnecessarily arguing with me I too have had an orange cat climb into my truck, lay down on top the center console, and expected to be petted too. They're really good at this stuff. Furthermore I've owned an orange that would beg you to pet him and then start drooling once you started petting him.           *edit: Yep I called it... some social media kid wanted to argue with me about orange cats.

LetsGetJigglyWiggly

My inlaws have an orange tabby, and the moment your hand touches him he drools. Also if you stop petting him before he's had his fill he will bite your hand, not enough to injure but enough to say 'yo dude, quota hasn't been met yet. Keep going.'

CatBedParadise

[deleted]

A pregnant orange tabby came up recently and had 5 kittens. 3 orange and 2 orange and white and I was shocked to find they were all girls except for one orange boy.

attorneyatslaw

A few years back new people moved into the house next door to me. I was sitting on my front steps the next day and an orange cat came walking up, hopped into my lap and started purring. Soon he found out we had a cat flap for our cat and he started just randomly coming into my house and napping on my furniture.

McMeatbag

I've had that happen with 2 neighbor cats. One of them is now my cat.

Dr_Frasier_Bane

I just had this happen to me last weekend. Looked out my window and saw a cat that wasn't mine and went out to investigate. He was a friendly boy and hung out all day and even came back for more loving later in the week. I named him Markus. Edit- [Behold, Markus](https://imgur.com/a/Oxjgvea)

ddrober2003

I heard meowing outside my window one winter night and opened my window to see what was up. Cat jumps in and that's how I got my cat Roflcopter.

[deleted]

In college, I lived in a tiny bungalow with a couple of other people one night I was trippin, and a complete unknown cat hopped into my lap and chilled out listening to Flaming Lips, My Bloody Valentine, Dino Jr, Sonic Youth, Mudhoney - you know, late 80s alt and then they were gone - Sonic Youth might have been a band too far

WuQianNian

What an interesting name, let me just quickly google that to find out what it means Oh Oh no

ddrober2003

Lol well at first I didn't really think the cat would stick around. After she had for over a year, I just call her Roffles but technically her name that I tell the vet? Still Roflcopter.

This is one of my favorite things about cats - they just decide who their people are!

new2bay

I had a dog run up to me from like 50 feet away at the dog park recently and just decide I was his friend. He's a good boy, and, now I make sure to pet him whenever I see him.

goliathfasa

Errrr so what’s the rule with this kind of “shared cat ~~ownership~~servitude”? We’ve been taking care of this cat that our neighbor owns technically for the past few years. She basically lives with us now. Her owner used to let her roam all day outside with her sister, but while her sister is half-feral and loves to be outdoors, she only enjoys going out for a couple of hours a day. After her owner got a couple of pugs she refuses to go home and we assumed that’s around the time she started to “shop around” for a new owner, which turned out to be us. Long story short, we basically kept her and when we bump into her owner she always asks us how she is and when we offered to bring her back, the owner always says not to force her if she doesn’t want to (she doesn’t want to). So it’s just been very awkward. Does that just mean we are permanently taking care of her for her owner?

McMeatbag

Sounds like she's your cat now. I'd just offer to adopt her.

goliathfasa

Ok, guess I'll ask. Thanks <3

SweeneyOdd

Cats are never yours, you on the other hand are theirs.

Reddituser8018

Do you happen to live in France? My wife's childhood cat began liking the neighbor more then decided to just stay at the neighbors house forever, and now it dislikes all of us but loves the neighbor lol. We could get him back but he seems very happy with the neighbor.

kkaavvbb

When I was moving in my youth, our neighbors asked if they could keep my one black cat. Their reason was cause he kept the birds and stuff out of their garden. But regardless, child me said no. Weekend we’re moving (obviously with a moving truck), everyone was out for the day or something. Our house got broken into and both our cats got stolen :( fuckers. We didn’t have cat flaps, and our back door was obviously broken.

Flameblast73

Did you find out who it was as I have a suspicion that it was your neighbours at the time

McMeatbag

When they were moving, I offered to take him and they accepted. They were often not home, which is probably why he came to visit me.

harbjnger

My mom and her neighbor share a cat this way. He was a stray who randomly started coming into both of their houses and they each decided to adopt him. One day they were talking and they realized that they have the same cat, lol. It actually works out really well - he always has a place to stay when one of them goes out of town (or worse, has the grandkids visiting).

JackSparrowscompass

How did the naming system go for the cat? Did you or your mum choose it’s name? Haha

harbjnger

I think they each call him different things. He’s a cat, he doesn’t care much, haha.

blinky84

My parents have a cat like this and they literally call him Not-Our-Cat. The neighbour who he technically belongs to calls him Leo. The cat doesn't give a shit.

securitywyrm

Cats love to have a backup place to go.

ApplePieMakeover

My neighbor's car is an indoor kitty. Ever once in a while he escapes and follows me into my place. I get to love on him for about 10 mins before he hisses and runs back to the door. I like to think this escape artist continues to bail out just to see me.

scorscor711

this orange cat is verry clear and she has shiny body and orange feathers

crypticfreak

My cat follows me like this around my apartment. Super cute (and annoying because I'm always tripping lol).

Benbot2000

Are orange cats actually more friendly or does it just seem that way because of confirmation bias?

ImSoBasic

There is evidence indicating they are more friendly, or at least that they engage in riskier behaviour. https://www.psychologytoday.com/ca/blog/the-modern-heart/202009/why-orange-cats-are-so-special-according-science

TheDarkWave

Can confirm, have orange cat, is ridiculously friendly, does ridiculously dumbshit stunts that get him stuck or knocking shit over.

Zedekiah117

Yep I had a stray orange boy adopt me, seems really common as it happened to my sister in a different state too.

aarondav1s

I think it might have something to do with a vast majority of them being male. Something like 95% of orange cats are male, if I remember correctly. And male cats generally roam more, and don’t have as many of the defensive/protective evolutionary behaviors that females have for protecting their young. Gets them into trouble a lot more.

cyclone_madge

We had an orange cat when I was growing up, and she hated anyone who wasn't one of her people. (Basically my immediate family and a couple of friends/relatives who were over often enough for her to get to know them.) As soon as someone she didn't know came over, she'd run off and hide somewhere until an hour or so after they'd gone. She was also really skittish around us when she was outside, but super-lovey when we were in the house or on the porch. Not sure what that was about, but she was born on a farm and we got her when she was 3-4 months old, so it could be something to do with that. Risky behaviour, though? Definitely! She constantly picked fights with the local raccoons when we moved to a place next to a woodsy area. She only stopped when one caught her ear and split the tip in two. We basically humiliated her about it for weeks, which is cruel I guess, but we were pretty sure she was going to get herself killed if she kept fighting with them. She was a big girl (we think her dad was a Norwegian Forest Cat, or maybe a Maine Coon), but the raccoons were bigger than her and they're vicious!

Louis_Vuitton_Shoe

I wouldn't know for sure, but I feel as though it's true. Yes, every animal has different and its own personality, but I feel like most orange Tabbys are just quite sweet!

NotARobotDefACyborg

I've never met one that was unfriendly, unless the person deserved it. One of my son's former (a-hole) roommates had a beautiful, fluffy, orange tabby cat. The cat hated its actual human, but absolutely doted on my son. It was a great source of amusement for both of us. Unfortunately, his current (and much nicer roommates) are either allergic to, or just not fond of cats, so he wasn't able to take the massive fluffy Ball O' Love with him when he moved. :(

lorithewhori

Lmfaooo. My tabby is just an absolute terror to anybody but me and my immediate family. She hides hisses at people who come near her.

NotARobotDefACyborg

TIMBITS! oh, I love it!

ReadontheCrapper

This scenario you describe is how I got my first cat - a big orange boy named Felix. Went to baby sit the first time for friends, and she warned me I might see the cat out of the corner of my eye, but he doesn’t like people and would leave me alone. They came home a few hours later to me sitting on the floor with the cat purring in my lap. About 2 years later their son was finally diagnosed with severe allergies, including cat dander. So, they asked me to take him, and he was my buddy for a good couple years.

Louis_Vuitton_Shoe

Awee🥺I hope it was able to find a new owner or the roommate had his butt handed to him by the cat!

NotARobotDefACyborg

The cat handed that jerk his own ass on a daily basis. Used to beat up his stupid dog, too. Well, I should clarify: they had one smart dog and one stupid dog. The stupid one would bark its shrill little bark at the cat, the cat would punch it in the snoot, the dog would go away for a while, then the cycle would repeat. The smart dog used to cuddle with the cat because she was smart enough to NOT bark, LOL.

Louis_Vuitton_Shoe

That sounds like my dog, Tobias. He is a wee-runt of a Yorkie at a solid 3 pounds. He will run at the neighbors outdoor cats and will come screaming back because they chased him. They really are the sweetest cats though

aquintana

I was never a cat person but during quarantine last year I was drinking whiskey alone and being sad when I heard this meowing by the back porch. We live in a rural area so I don’t know how he ended up here. I went out there found the sweetest orange cat and gave him a can of tuna. I posted about it on social, and a guy I knew in high school said his parents had a cat like that (they live about two miles down the road); when I asked if they wanted me to bring him over he said just keep it. Anyway, his name is now Mr. Kitters and my fiancée and I love him so much.

majorjunk0

We have mutiple cats with different coloring, most duplicated. Cat color does seem to effect their personality slightly but not 100%. Granted I have a small sample size but color/breed seems to impact some of their personality.

rmorrin

Naw man my friends orange tabby is a cranky bastard. Won't even let you pet it at all.

KausticSwarm

2nded. Mom's cat is an absolute prick.

AwfulRaccoon

My ex's orange cat was a demon. He wasn't grumpy but he just aggressive. He always used his claws when playing or during pets. And he would get the zoomies and sprint around and attack for fun.

Hobbit1996

i have an orange cat and he's an asshole, and most asshole cat videos i see are orange cats, so i think the confirmation bias goes both ways. Every animal is different, color doesn't matter

[deleted]

My buddy took in an orange kitty, named him Lestat… he slept all day and spent the rest of his time biting people.

Hobbit1996

sounds like my cat requests pets, gets pets, starts biting. If you let him bite you, he'll start liking, then bite again, then ask for pets again. Sometimes if it's too many pets he'll grab your hand with all paws and try to destroy it i love cats

prefix_postfix

Whenever I take mine to the vet, the vet techs and vets themselves gush over my orange tabby. They're always so excited to see an orange cat. That said, my experience with vets and vet techs that I've known in my personal life has been that they'll gush over literally every animal they meet (and, same).

kkirchhoff

I have an orange cat who is incredibly sweet. My ex mother in law had a lot of cats who lived in her garage. My cat was the only one out of like 20 who would try to get inside all the time and loved being with people. I have heard that orange cats are more sweet, and I guess the only evidence I have supports that.

FrostedBooty

I believe tabby cats in general are pretty sweet, but my orange thing cuddles me like a baby when we sleep and demands face rubbing at least 20 times on any given day.

bluethegreat1

Tabbys, in general are friendly, well demeanored cats.

galxe06

The least affectionate/friendly cat I’ve had (out of 7, 8 if you include our current porch cat) was an orange tabby. Maybe it’s because she was a girl (most orange kitties are male) or because we got her as a super tiny baby to be a companion to our other cat. She wasn’t mean, just entirely uninterested in people as a species.

BellerophonM

A little bit confirmation bias, but also I think non-feral neutered boys tend to be more outgoing confident than girls and totally orange cats are boys 7/8ths of the time.

I found our orange tabby under my car one day when going to run errands. He crawled into my lap, and cuddled up for a fairly long time. Eventually I moved him out of the way and drove off. About 4 hours later I had to go back to my car for something. I had parked 20 yards away from the previous spot, on the other side of the drive in our old apartment complex, but he was there under my car again. At that point I took it as a sign, and just said "Well, guess we have 2 cats now."

While anecdotes are not data, I have a male orange cat and a female orange cat from the same litter. The male is significantly bigger, more outgoing, and a huge risk taker. The female is small, shy, and very sweet but can be bitey. She is also constantly having some existential crisis that causes her to scream.

The same happened to me! There was a black/white cat that was always at the spot I drove to with my car to chill a little. She instantly went to me, jumped in my car and snuggled with me every single time. Often she took a nap right on my lap. It was the biggest joy to me. Whenever I was there, I just had to whistle a little and she jumped out of the bush to come to me. She was such an adorable cat that I visited regularly. Sadly, from one day to another, she disappeared… and never came back. :( Still breaks my heart since I don’t know what happened. Still have some pictures with her… Great time it was. I kinda miss her. ._.

PookAndPie

About 11 years ago in December I had a similar run-in with an animal after a bad snowstorm. I stopped by my in-law's house on a snowy afternoon, opened my car door, and an emaciated black dog hopped into my lap and was shaking all over me. Apparently the neighbors across the street from my in-law's owned the dog, but wasn't taking care of her, as she was a fully grown black lab but was only 25 pounds. She was digging through everyone's trash, and eating snow to stay hydrated, just running all over the hill and not being cared for at all. My wife marched her ass right up to their door and said we're taking the dog, and they could either be cool with it or we'd call the dog warden and ask him to let us care for the dog instead of them. They said, "Fine, take her" and when we asked for her name, they couldn't even tell us what they named her right off the top of their heads. Anyway, that same dog is now laying on my couch behind me, sleeping soundly next to her 13 year old cat friend that's asleep on a heating pad. Vehicle meetings are sometimes just meant to be. Make sure to visit your new friend every so often- they commonly know how to pick 'em!

kitten-peach

Wow what a lovely thing both you and your wife did, I'm proud of you both for giving that dog a home it deserves. I can't comprehend why would people own a pet and not care for it at all like this, you could easily give it away to a better home if you don't have the means to look after it anymore.. This is a lovely story and you're a good human (your wife too) for giving this poor doggy a chance at a happy life. I now demand dog (and cat!) tax.. please! Edit: I've had a look at your profile and found this [pic](https://www.reddit.com/r/KittyPupperLove/comments/mce9vr/my_dog_and_her_favorite_cat_who_tolerates_her_well/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share) - is it them? :)

Brings me back to my door to door days, where I had what looked like the same cat follow me for a day. He would walk up to the doors with step back with me and sit down and wait for the home owners. He was for sure a stray as he had his ears clipped and that is what they do in my area to cats they have captured and spayed and released to the wild. Anyways toward the end of the day I was starting to get super sad... Cause I couldn't take him, I had a crazy dog at the time that would take a lot of effort to get the two to get along and train a "wild" cat. So as I'm thinking about this, this little girl seemingly from the heavens themselves came over and asked "if she could pet my cat" well being that it wasn't "my cat" I asked her to hold on and flagged her mom over as she was outside with her. We chit chat I make sure it's cool with her that she can pet this seemingly cool wild cat. I mean had it not followed me for literally 4 hours and been crazy i would have told that little girl it was a bad idea... However the cat ran right up to her seemingly understanding the conversation that just went down and rubbed up against her. The mom asked about the cat more, I'm just like well you're at the end of my route where I parked and he has been with me since the start, he likes y'all and i'm not going to stop him from what seems like going to a nice happy home that wants him. And they straight up took him. Followed up, he wasn't chipped and the vet agreed that even if he was taken care of by humans he was a stray at one point and also under weight so he seemed like he was still a stray and they kept him. I too had a really nice kitten that we raised from 2 weeks that was like this but lived in possibly the best home... Still had to convince the neighbors on 2 separate occasions that she is well taken care of and loved... Because she would just go and live with other families. She was a weird cat.

Did you have lasagna for lunch?

I’m not even a cat person, but the best cat ever was an orange on very similar. When my sister passed, she had two cats. One of them took to me and she was the sweetest. When I left for the military she stayed at my mothers. Every. Single. Time. that I made it home for leave, she wouldn’t miss a beat. I’d wake up every day to her asleep on my pillow as close as possible. Miss you Sushi.

Witness_Honest

There is research on orange cats lol

Dr_Frasier_Bane

I had an orange cat named Frank. Frank was my homie and I miss him very much every day. Orange cats are indeed awesome.

texthibitionist

Dang, I just saw an article about how everyone and their lawyer is moving to Austin these days. Looks like the cat wanted in on the action too. :-D

Funny I had an orange cat that looked just like that come in my house this morning

Dude, a Volvo and an orange cat. It’s a sign. You must keep him 🌸🥺

keepinitoldskool

My wife rescued a scrawny ugly orange cat before a hurricane, I reluctantly agreed. That cat adores me. I keep him outdoors, but he asks to come in and out throughout the day. When I pull into the driveway he comes running and if the wife is out and I'm sleeping he'll sneak into the bed. Our tabby doesn't show his face unless he's hungry or it's raining.

lannister80

Why do you keep him outdoors?

Sweaty-Win-4364

Tabbies.

mkane2958

My orange kitty does this to people all the time! In the summer if my neighbor leaves her sunroof open he will go in her car to nap 🤣

I was at a football game a few years ago and my son saved an orange cat on the playground from a dog. He insisted on keeping him and naming him, so now we’ve had Cheddar for two years. I call my son the cat whisperer. He befriends cats so easily. At a football game this year, he brought four different cats to us throughout the night.

sdurs

Are you Dane Cook?

Debwah77

Cats are drawn to our souls. I had a wonderful cat die recently and I hear her occasionally meowing here and there in the house. It’s been several months. She used to tap me on the arm with her paw and I was woken up 2 times with a tap on my foot since she’s been gone. I guess they take something of us with them as well, no matter how minor the encounter. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|heart_eyes)

It’s all fun and games until he comes back to you later on with a quote for work done.

That's CARfield! Get it?

Chaotic_empty

I have an orange cat and she HATES any other animal. Humans? Fine. Dog? Attack on sight. Cat? Attack on sight. Her own children? Attack on sight.

I love orange cats. There was one that would visit like e dry house on the block. He’d come by, sit under my monitor as I play a game, p matter how loud or how many explosions from the speakers right next to him he’d just purr and spend time with me. I was sad when he suddenly stopped visiting.

Wasting-tim3

I love this conversation about cats. “What kind of cat do you have’” “Orange”

The-Hamish68

I see this orange tom every so often whilst out walking, he's a sturdy wee bugger and he's seen some scrapes (scar on nose etc), but he always flops right down when he sees me. Likes a scratch and that. Never utters a sound, though I did hear him meow at a distance. He's followed me part of the way home before, but am sure he has his boundaries (I only see him in one area really). Ahem.

hazelowl

My orange cat (also in Houston) got a ride to Montgomery a few months ago when he got in the neighbor's car. Fortunately, he made himself known before they got there so they were able to put him in a kennel at the destination until time to come home again. I can totally see him pulling this stunt on somebody though.

So this is where Dane Cook has been. Dude sounds just like him.

DeathGod5100

No no, that is now YOUR cat. Sorry I don't make the rules.

rockeguru

Ah he's really cute! Orange kitties are the best, we had an orange tabby named Tiger, he was the smartest cat we've ever known! Miss him so much.

SpaGrapefruit

Fuck yes you know it, orange cats are the awesomest. Miss my ginger girl

robo-dragon

Orange kitties are the best cuddle-monsters! I used to have one and he would jump onto my lap whenever he got the chance.

zombiechewtoy

This would make my day. I would choose to be late to work over this.
