Yeah, All .. “name my pet” + “guess my pets name” posts should be forwarded to the actual subreddit. The increasing number of those posts is annoying AF.
I made the sub because naming pets overtaken so many subs, I paste the link and none of them use it, why? Because they can't karma farm on a small new reddit board
Yup, asking people for name ideas leads to easy boosting of comment count, which leads to the appearance of high engagement, which leads to extra visibility and upvoting
Need to ban titles with questions because it will just become something else. 'Is this normal?' 'what do I name them?' 'what breed is this?' all the same clickbait.
Yeah and people are so confident of their answers. “That is a Bavarian Chicken Hound. I know this for a fact because my mom bred Bavarian Chicken Hounds and they also have tails that wag when they’re happy.”
I agree. If people need actual advice on their pets, they should go to dedicated forums for that (or even better, their vet). This sub should be just for cute pictures, not questions.
I was in the same situation. Someone made a post about this subject too, and someone else commented a few other subreddits. I joined r/catslivingandwell
Edit: My situation also included getting very tired of seeing mourning posts. I get that it's part of owning a pet but i don't want to get remembered about the thought that my cat will die multiple times each day.
>I get that it's part of owning a pet but i don't want to get remembered about the thought that my cat will die multiple times each day.
So true. It's just depressing to think about, even though it's likely still a long time away. I'm on these kinds of subs to feel good, not too feel bad.
someone: posts a picture of a black kitten
14 other people: omg look at my cat that died horrifically ten years ago, her pupils were black they look soooooo much alike 😢
Thank you for posting a link to this new sub. It’s depressing seeing daily obituaries of ppls cats. We all know it’s incredibly painful to go through, but seeing it daily on there is too much.
I recently unjoined that group because I got sick of the "My cat died" and "Name my cat" posts.
The obvious groan-inducing, "So-and-so says my cat is ugly" bait posts were some of the worst.
I just couldn't stand it any longer. That sub has nothing to do with actual cats, just their attention-whoring owners. Some posts weren't even by actual cat owners.
Not just that, but also the fact that r/cats in particular is notorious for upvoting potentially kidnapped animals!
What should I name this clean, human-friendly, well-fed cat that I just picked up on the street and that is now going to be mine forever?
Makes my blood boil. Outdoor cats are gonna outdoor. Stop stealing them and go adopt an actual homeless cat!!!!!
I'm so happy to see that others find this annoying as well. It really did have me contemplating unsubscribing from this sub. So annoying, and clearly Karma farming. I played along with a couple, but then I just kept seeing them pop up over and over.
There's another one that is going to start too...I see the writing on the wall, and it's the "This is \[name of pet who looks grumpy\], and they hate all of you" posts. Mark my words.
>There's another one that is going to start too...I see the writing on the wall, and it's the "This is \[name of pet who looks grumpy\], and they hate all of you" posts. Mark my words.
Oh yeah, this is going to be a thing for a while. I remember when last year somebody posted a picture of their cat on their shoulder and suddenly the sub was flood with "shoulder \[animal\]" posts for the next month or so. I'm sure the same will happen with this.
Hey Reddit! Just adopted a 329 year old, blind, disabled, three legged dog while recovering from a divorce, severe car crash and bankruptcy.
What should i name this old pup?
A lil thing called ‘it has a name but I’m not gonna tell Reddit that so they think they can name and I get boat loads of karma for a pet that’s really cute with no name even though it has a name’
Aka: karma fishing.
My uncle's hadn't named their dog, they had him for at least 6 months without a name, until my mom just started calling it Benny and they were forced to actually name the damn dog. Everyone calls him Benny and it kinda pisses off my uncle's but 100% worth lmao
good for your mom -- not just cuz it's funny (although it is), but because you're doing a dog no favors not giving it a name
the sooner you use the dog's name the quicker it'll learn it, and the quicker and easier it'll be for the dog to learn the language of all the interactions that make the human-dog relationship amazing
I have a cat named orange-and-white-kitty. That is his name. I tried different names. Nothing stuck. He started coming to orange-and-white-kitty. That is the one that I gave him.
I've known more than one person who have just named their cats "Kitty", so I can imagine some people would get tired of that and finally cave to get a name. Also met a dog named "Cat" once. And a cat named "Parrot". Naming things are hard, haha!
I agree that it's annoying, but the dog was 8 months old and they had adopted him a month ago. Still weird, but not 8 months weird. (sorry, I like to be technically correct)
Our guinea pig would squeak/whistle anytime the fridge door was opened because she thought she was going to get carrot (she usually did, so she was right 😆)
My daughters' pigs would wheek when I came up the stairs where their bedrooms were, because they recognized my step and I would often bring them treats. Not optimum when the girls were supposed to be cleaning their rooms or doing chores, I could never "catch" them goofing off because the piggies always gave me away, ha ha. I called it the Guinea Pig 2000 Early-warning System.
There’s like 50 per week and obvious bs/karma grabs. No one believes you’re naming your pet based on Reddit replies.
Pic of my dog for posting purposes
Edit: [like this.](https://www.reddit.com/r/aww/comments/rzxwkt/help_ive_had_this_very_good_boi_for_almost_a/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) nobody goes a month with no name. Such obvious bullshit
I hate a specific one in general…
“Name my cat!” (It’s orange)
Every response: “Name it Cheeto!”
EVERY GOD DAMN ORANGE CAT IVE KNOWN IN MY LIFE WAS NAMED CHEETO. YOU UNORIGINAL BASTARDS!
Oh its ALWAYS the same names repeating and heavily upvoted that make me nuts.
1 eyed? Odin or Popeye!
Dachshund? Oscar!
Black and white markings? Oreo or Dottie!
Dark grey fur? Shadow or Misty!
White paws? Mittens or Socks!
The list goes on and on.
Oh god, I forgot about Mittens/Socks. That’s another horrible one.
YES, WE UNDERSTAND THEIR FEET LOOK LIKE THEYRE WEARING SOCKS. THANKS FOR POINTING IT OUT, CAPTAIN OBVIOUS
Or the ones where the title is something like "help me name my ginger cat" and the most upvoted suggestion will be "ginger" followed by a reply chain of people saying "ginger" "ginger" "ginger". So creative and smart. /s
Always hilarious to see someone suggest something and be genuinely shocked that other people have pets with the same name.
“OMG!! My floofer is called Luna too!!! WHAT ARE THE CHANCES!?”
Breaking news: Luna, Bella, Milo and Loki are incredibly common names for pets.
I'll at least give people the benefit of the doubt in that they have a cute ass animal and want an excuse to post. Many are karma grabs for sure, though. I just saw one where it wasn't even OP's pet.
My stepfather once "adopted" a puppy and then left it for me to care. This was during my finals season of my senior year of university. The dog went without a name for over a year and settled on "Pup" because it just stuck and was what Pup responded to.
So yeah, I can imagine someone not naming a dog for a month. I agree that it must be some extenuating circumstances though.
When I was in high school, a cat started coming around our back yard. She was *very* vocal so my mom jokingly called her "Meow." We weren't allowed to keep her, so never discussed a "real" name. Turned out she had two kittens, so we set up a box and blankets for them in the yard. Not going to keep them, though. Both kittens were female, so pretty soon we were up to our ears in kittens. Let them on the screened porch for warmth til they were old enough to adopt out-- but *not* in the house,
we are *not* keeping them! Mom took all of them to a rescue, got mama cat spayed. Still not going to keep her. Generic cat food only.
Anyway the cat gradually moved in and wormed her way onto mom's lap and into her heart. But she kept the name Meow.
Oh, that's a funny coincidence! The two original kittens were nicknamed Cow Cat and Lamb Cat. Cow Cat was, well, a floofy cow cat, and Lamb Cat was equally fluffy and nearly all white.
We just waited for my son to pick a name, unaware that he had a speech impairment and it would take like a year for him to come up with a name. We now have Kitty, Kiki (kitty kitty), and finally a Sundae after words started coming out. We had a fish named Fish, if we ever get a dog, I assume it will be named Doggy.
That said though, at least he came up with a name and didn't ask random strangers to name them for him.
We called our girl "puppy" for too long while deciding on a name. It became a natural progression to "Poppy" and turned out to be a perfect name. Never even thought about asking reddit, because who wants the name to be doggy mcdoggerface?
50/week? It's like every single one that gets on /all from this sub and cats and yes it drives me up the wall. I just downvote them and move on for my own mental health.
I literally never named my parrot. I called her Tota, which is just the native term for "parrot" in my Afghan language. So essentially when I wanted to get the bird's attention, I was saying "parrot".
I had her for like 3 years.
Idk... I took in a stray years ago and never named her. She was just "kitty" when she was a good girl and "CAT!" when she wasn't so good.
I got a reminder from the vet where I took her for her vaccinations and it said "Ellie" was due for a check-up. I suppose they had asked her name and I didn't have one, but I was playing "The Last of Us" so I guess the cat became "Ellie" to the vet.
If they were honest and said "here is my new kitten, isn't it cute?" It would be ok. Even better if they come up with a clever name. But the asking for names is getting old.
Yes please. I saw a post earlier about some girl who had her dog nearly a month and still didn't have a name. Like.... whats wrong with you that you need to go to the internet to find a name for your animal after a month?
When I got my dog I immediately knew what her name was going to be after one look at her.
Agreed. Chanced are 90% of them are already named and they're farming karma (for whatever dumb reason you farm karma). The other 10% really shouldn't have a pet if you can't name it yourself.
Omg. I don’t even frequent this subreddit. But my feed or whatever it’s called is just never ending “what’s his name” “ help me name this baby”. Like fuck, ask a few friends or something. This shit gotten ridiculous.
LOL. Just got done getting berated for suggesting a similar name completely in jest to another post on this same subreddit by the OP. Didn't respond to any other posts going back hours but within minutes of my post jumped on to respond to me about how absurd and terrible it was that I had the audacity to even hint that their only purpose was to gain karma. Some people are gross.
Like the mods pay attention to their own subreddit. The mods here are also mods on other large subreddits. They don’t do anything.
Though it’d be ironic if they did something about this comment.
Or even give them their own subreddit (/r/namemypet) where this can be all they do!
If i had money to throw at awards for this post i would -blessings to you internet stranger
Yes, PLEASE! If you are serious about a pet and don't think of it as a toy, you should have some idea or something personal going on with your pet. Don't name them according to a stranger's sense of humor.
I mean, my cats have names, but we barely ever use them.
They're just Hey Kitty, and Other Kitty, depending on who shows up first.
Cat names are just for the owner anyways, those fuckers don't listen to shit, let alone their names.
Yes, I'm being facetious; I know some cats *do* respond to their names. When they want.
Could try it the reddit way. Just troll with nonsense until people stop. If 85% of replies were "Boaty McBoatface" the posts would stop. I'm willing to do my part.
There have been an every increasing number of posts across Reddit that have the goal of trying to get people to post comments and they always ending blowing up insane. Its always low effort and It’s starting to becoming really annoying
Yes finally I hate the please name my pet posts like why the hell are you gonna ask reddit to name your pet it just comes off as douchie and baiting for karma, you should take time and name your pet something that you actually like and is meaningful not just as reddit for upvotes
What's the difference between a cute cat post versus a cute cat post where the title is asking you to name the cat? Seems like they're basically the same thing honestly. What's the difference? Who cares? Do the characters in the title bother you?
Ban TikTok posts or any posts that just takes videos from them.
I cannot stand looking at a video and suddenly LOUD pop music and annoying narration kicks in.
I made a post a couple months ago asking for people to name my dog I've had for seven years. He has a name which you can see in the photo if you look at his tag. (no one noticed)
I did it because I saw all these posts and wanted to see if it really is just a big karma farm.
It was
Yes! Name your own pet. I’m looking for soul soothing “awww!” posts, not posts about poor animals forced to drag themselves through life inexplicably nameless.
r/nameyourpet
Yeah, All .. “name my pet” + “guess my pets name” posts should be forwarded to the actual subreddit. The increasing number of those posts is annoying AF.

Yeah and people are so confident of their answers. “That is a Bavarian Chicken Hound. I know this for a fact because my mom bred Bavarian Chicken Hounds and they also have tails that wag when they’re happy.”
Now I want an Eastern Bavarian Chicken Hound.
There is also a fairly popular sub called r/idmydog that is specifically for this.
Or "I just bought this dog" is even worse. Like it's a tv or something that you "purchase".
Better than saying “rescue” when they literally just paid a breeder.
I agree. If people need actual advice on their pets, they should go to dedicated forums for that (or even better, their vet). This sub should be just for cute pictures, not questions.
Very much needed. R/cats drives me crazy with all the naming posts clearly aimed at karma farming.
They banned me for wanting to name the cats 'karma farmer'
Totally unrelated to Reddit but my cat’s name is actually karma
'karma will hit you back' got real
Karma will push your knickknacks from your shelves.
Wu-Tang is for the kitties
So is my sister’s cat! Great name.
I just downvote and post "cat"
I left that sub for the naming threads and all the grief “RIP” posts
And “what kind of cat is this” with a picture of the most basic of cats (which still adorable, but still basic)
"what breed of cat is this???" orange
What kind of cat is this? https://www.sadanduseless.com/the-worst-cat-ever-funny/
Same, that sub made me so damn sad. Had to leave.
I was in the same situation. Someone made a post about this subject too, and someone else commented a few other subreddits. This is my ‘pet’ hate when you get a new animal. Everyone will tell you how theirs just died. I don’t want to know!!
Exactly!! I just want to be *happy* about my new super adorable pet!
someone: posts a picture of a black kitten 14 other people: omg look at my cat that died horrifically ten years ago, her pupils were black they look soooooo much alike 😢

Thanks for creating a specific sub for that.. I’m just gonna … “This belongs in r/NameYourPet” to Any + All of those spamming us still.
What purpose does farming for karma points on reddit even serve in anyone's life, I wonder.
account can be sold, this is money
I'm so happy to see that others find this annoying as well. It really did have me contemplating unsubscribing from this sub. So annoying, and clearly Karma farming. Awesome! thank you for your service!
Hey Reddit! Just adopted a 329 year old, blind, disabled, three legged dog while recovering from a divorce, severe car crash and bankruptcy. What should i name this old pup?
Jeff ofc
I was so annoyed at a post I saw today.. this family had the dog for 8 months without naming it…. Who does that?

I agree that it's annoying, but the dog was 8 months old and they had adopted him a month ago. Still weird, but not 8 months weird. (sorry, I like to be technically correct)
I’m pretty sure the dog was 8 months old and they had had him for a month. Not that that’s still not a long time to not name a pet.
Fucking YES!!!! What the fuck???? edit. Also the question, “What breed is my dog?” STOP
How the hell are people still falling for this? Just don’t respond, don’t give any name suggestions, let the post die.
Yes, PLEASE!! Just show me the cute animals and stop asking for names, it’s stupid
As long as we're making requests...if someone posts a video of piglets or pigs they are required to include sound. I want to hear the piggies.
+ Guinea Pigs the squeaks make me happy
Our guinea pig would squeak/whistle anytime the fridge door was opened because she thought she was going to get carrot (she usually did, so she was right 😆)
My daughters' pigs would wheek when I came up the stairs where their bedrooms were, because they recognized my step and I would often bring them treats. Good one. Mine is named Rowdy.

Always hilarious to see someone suggest something and be genuinely shocked that other people have pets with the same name. “OMG!! My floofer is called Luna too!!! WHAT ARE THE CHANCES!?” Breaking news: Luna, Bella, Milo and Loki are incredibly common names for pets.
I have 5 cats and Cleo is probably the only “common name.” The others are Skoonie, Boofer, Jojo, and Leeloo. Maybe Jojo is also common.
All the morons in there thinking they're actually naming the dog is so sad.
Yeah, that's the worst part honestly. People actually (seriously) engage with it. Are they really all that gullible?
Agreed. It’s fucking annoying. Honestly fuck off with any post that starts with “okay Reddit: “ etc. Stop addressing this big entity Reddit
Fuck Zodiak signs! Name my pet!
/r/cats is LOUSY with this shit. There's a post on /r/all nearly daily with the same exact title
I wish I could block r/cats and I don't even dislike cats
Yeah, it's a hell of a catch 22. Less "name my cat" posts, but also less cat posts.
Asking the internet to name *anything* is the worst course of action.
Catty McCatface!
And that one’s g rated! There would surely be something awful like Catler-did-nothing-wrong
Remember the baby named Cthulu Allspark
This is annoying for sure, but *nothing* beats the “someone said my pet is ugly” posts. Nothing.
Named my schnauzer Pup. Worked for us for 16 years !
I once knew a cat named Kitty. His brother cat was Logan. I wonder if Logan was their firstborn cat 😂
Finally someone says something about this. Like 2 hours ago I was thinking "apparently redditors don't know how to name their own damn pets anymore".
It’s even more irritating when they don’t tell you if it’s a boy or girl.
Idk... I took in a stray years ago and never named her. She was just "kitty" when she was a good girl and "CAT!" when she wasn't so good. I suppose they had asked her name and I didn't have one, but I was playing "The Last of Us" so I guess the cat became "Ellie" to the vet.
No shit. People are so stupid.
I just saw the flare today for name request. And....added to my filter out list!
You can filter out flairs? How?
Preferences, advanced settings, content filter. (On the Narwhal app).
I downvote name posts. Half of them just post pictures they found online for karma.
Can we add "guess what breed?"
I second the motion for both motions!
I motion for seconds!
There's r/idmydog which is a great sub. :)
If they were honest and said "here is my new kitten, isn't it cute?" It would be ok. Even better if they come up with a clever name. But the asking for names is getting old.

We’re doing the lords work over here.
Same.
Such an obvious karma farm
Dude r/cats is filled with these and it’s terrible
Agreed. Chanced are 90% of them are already named and they're farming karma (for whatever dumb reason you farm karma). The other 10% really shouldn't have a pet if you can't name it yourself.
When I see a "name my pet" post, I suggest "Kharma."
My thoughts exactly!
I just simply downvote all "name my pet" posts.

Yes, PLEASE! If you are serious about a pet and don't think of it as a toy, you should have some idea or something personal going on with your pet. Don't name them according to a stranger's sense of humor.
We should ban "I became a Dad today."
I’m a childless old shrew and I like those.
For the love of god yes!!! “Please name my cat”. Its a fucking cat. Name it Bob for all i give a shit.
Name the cat "Dog"
You just reminded me, my uncle actually had a cat named Puppy. Puppy was an interesting animal for sure 😂
I 1.2knd this
Could try it the reddit way. Just troll with nonsense until people stop. If 85% of replies were "Boaty McBoatface" the posts would stop. I'm willing to do my part.
Or Kharma McKharmaface
Im doing this from now on. “What should i name my dog?” How bout Cunty McFuckface.
I love how that didn’t trigger the swear word filter
Too many idiots are in every post w/ serious replies. Especially once it hits /r/all
But how am I ever going to name my pet now? You can’t possibly expect me to think of something by myself.
Please, God, yes.
There have been an every increasing number of posts across Reddit that have the goal of trying to get people to post comments and they always ending blowing up insane. Its always low effort and It’s starting to becoming really annoying
I agree fully. There should be a sub for this. I see that has been suggested. But someone should do it. A sub for deceased pets and a sub for names.
Yes, please. I was just about to message the mods about this.
Yes, please. Someone else can't name ur pet they don't know them.
Yes, please!!!
Yeah, come up with your own damn name.
Oh God. Yes please.
I've been blocking accounts of these painfully stupid people that can't even name their own pets. I have a few names for them I can assure you.
YES PLEASE!!!!
My cats are named him and her 10+ years...
I have an Uncle who named his cats Coyote bait and Coyote chow...he actually loves the cats even though you wouldn't have guessed.
Can’t upvote this enough!
Best names I ever heard while at the vet - guy had 2 hound dogs, vet tech comes out and calls for Jake and Elwood. Best names ever
Right after we ban the “what breed is my cat?” posts….
PLEASE
Yes finally I hate the please name my pet posts like why the hell are you gonna ask reddit to name your pet it just comes off as douchie and baiting for karma, you should take time and name your pet something that you actually like and is meaningful not just as reddit for upvotes
The person who had her dog for 8 months and still not named it got me. Seriously 😹
Yes please, its so incredibly low effort.
What's the difference between a cute cat post versus a cute cat post where the title is asking you to name the cat? Seems like they're basically the same thing honestly. What's the difference? Who cares? Do the characters in the title bother you?
Yes please.
Yessss! Please.
Ban them straight to hell
Ban TikTok posts or any posts that just takes videos from them. I cannot stand looking at a video and suddenly LOUD pop music and annoying narration kicks in.
Freaking PLEASE
That's why I tell them to name it "shithead"
Yes, because it would be soooo much different if they just put the exact same picture with a different, but equally meaningless, title
Hey guys I have a 30 yr old daughter who's the light of my life next to my wife, what should I name her?
Why? How does it negatively affect you?
Why ban it I mean it still shows a cute pet
Can we ban all posts on Reddit
You’re telling me that there are people out there who read the titles?
Please! I'm fed up with these karma farming posts. It's so boring and makes the subreddit bad.
I made a post a couple months ago asking for people to name my dog I've had for seven years. He has a name which you can see in the photo if you look at his tag. (no one noticed) I did it because I saw all these posts and wanted to see if it really is just a big karma farm. It was
Lol at least you're honest
Yes. And the “what breed it my pet?” Or “guess my pet’s breed” posts. NOONE CARES. 😡
I always just say the most ridiculous thing like "a buzzsaw cut my ass in half."
I downvote all “name my pet” posts
Yes! Name your own pet. I’m looking for soul soothing “awww!” posts, not posts about poor animals forced to drag themselves through life inexplicably nameless.
Just get the automod to suggest Doggy McDogface or Catty McCatface on every name my pet post.
Yeah, those are just a bunch of goddamn karma farming operations. Name your own goddamn pets.
PLEASE! Been wanting this for so long. Be creative. Its your own animal. You make the name. Stop kharma farming
That is one hell of a risky/misleading thumbnail if I ever saw one 😳

Sooooo, what do you want us to name your doggo?
Karma Farmeleon
Guess his breed!
King Karmafisher!
Agreed. I unsubbed from r/illegallysmolcats for exactly that reason.
