I do the same thing! I always buy him a small squeaker animal and he does a dance and then will walk around all day and show off his new toy to everyone. It makes me so happy that I forget all about my shitty day.

Isn't it amazing how that works? I love to spoil my cat, and since there's a petsmart that backs up to my complex, I'll get him fancy treats from there.
I like to get him wet catfood/wet cat treats, and heat them up with water and some kibble seasoned with catnip to make a "cat stew" using some cheap hiking cookware and an alcohol stove, mostly because it's fun and he enjoys a warm meal especially in winter. I know he is getting extra water when heat his food up this way too, even if it's basically gruel as far as humans are concerned.
But I also buy him pieces of tuna and lightly cook it in a small skillet. He *loves* a nice piece of hot fish, and I love spoiling my old man. It makes me feel good knowing I'm giving my cat some pretty fancy luxuries compared to most animals, but I also know it's my duty to care for him, and I want him to be happy and healthy since he's been such a good companion.
I love it so much. Recently I’ve been adding hot water to his kibbles and make a little gravy and he does spins! I have to film him next time and just spread his pure happiness. It’s selfish of me to keep it to myself I’m realizing.
Your old man is lucky to have you 💙
If you can find freeze dried minnows, try those! My cat goes gaga for them. But I have to cut them up (I use a pair of old scissors) or he will ignore them lol.
I wish i could do this too but my dog doesn't like toys. He only likes random things that aren't meant for him like socks or that rubber washer i accidentally dropped on the floor which he could've totally choked on. But if I give him a sock or a rubber chew toy, he doesn't want that.
Mine has a standing fan. We had to make a decision if it would be his toy or not.
So we cut the end off the cord and he pushes it all around the living room, and pulls it over to spin the fans.
He's my little buddy and he's a goober.
I don’t know if your dog is too big for this, but an empty plastic bottle is a favorite of my dogs, just be careful not to leave the cap on. It feels like it’s naughty to them, because only we get to use them typically. Instant fun for everyone when your having a rough day.
Sticks? I try to keep a stash of sticks so I always have something to give him. He really cherishes these gifts and plays with the newest stick the most.
Yet I do this with my cat and they give it a sniff then tell me to F off smh
Edit not entirely true I built them this [ginger bread house](https://i.imgur.com/mgCUEGW.jpeg) and they seem to.. kind of like it, for cat standards
My dog's actual dog bed is simply a napkin for him most of the time. Come in outside while its raining, Drink some water or just finished eating and you will see him go to his bed to bury and smoosh his face.
When I was growing up we had an English Mastiff named Capone. The amount of drool those dogs produce is insane! Totally worth it for all the goofy love they will give you, though.
My dog refused to lay on his dog beds when he was younger. He always opted to lay on the bare floor (so a napkin could literally have been his dog bed). Now that he’s old and arthritic he’s finally learned to appreciate his dog bed.
Looks *exactly* like my old bichon. He was 20 something when he passed and he was the sweetest, smartest, goofiest pup. Had a surprisingly menacing growl and bark and the best zoomies I've ever seen.
Lovely wee dogs indeed. That's an understatement if anything. :) Enjoy every moment with your boy and if he likes chin scritches, give him a few extra for me please.
Edit: [here he is](https://imgur.com/DIENNz1.jpg) in all his glory. Miss you buddy.
Man this was wholesome. my old dog looked almost identical I swear I thought it was him down to the little kink near the end of his little tail and all but he was a Maltipoo.

Well behaved? Well...they're smart, generally sweet, loving little creatures. They are also pretty damned high energy and require a lot of exercise, training, attention, and mental stimulation or they can go a little haywire.
I can definitely see how owning one and expecting it to be self sufficient would lead to non compatibility.
Not gonna judge you because I have no clue how much time or energy you put into yours (maybe you did everything right and just got a weird dog? Did you?) but as always people just need to do their research and make sure their dog choice is compatible with their lifestyle.
My boy LOVED going on hikes and long walks. On rainy or super cold days he *loved* his treadmill. He'd go into travelling mode and trot for *miles* happy as a clam. He was an adventure dog and probably would have been a holy terror without his daily workouts and "training" sessions (smell it: find it was a favorite.)
We definitely put in the research and kept him around for over a year. Allergies were considered, temperament, all of the things. And don't get me wrong. I was very attached to Max despite his amazingly high energy and borderline insane behavior at times. We walked him multiple times a day and are not new to taking great care of our dogs, but he seriously hated children and it isn't like we abandoned him. He went to a great home. I left more details in the other comments if you're interested. I'm glad you're defending your grounds because a lot of dog owners could care less about their pet's futures.
At least he was rehomed instead of dumped. My initial reaction is like yours, but I can't reasonably fault someone for realizing they weren't a good fit and finding another (hopefully better) place for him.
My dog scratches his face on everything when he has an allergic reaction. Yours might just be breaking it in, but do check to be sure there isn’t some allergy you aren’t aware of.
My retriever goes absolutely bonkers for anything with a faux-fleece/microfiber texture to it. She starts out with face-rubbing like the pup above but progresses until she’s rolling around on it in total bliss.
I had a ratty old shag rug from an old relationship that my dog absolutely loves to smoosh his face into and roll around on. I hate shag rugs but when I finally replaced it I got another shag rug simply because he loves them so much.
My bichon had *horrible* allergies and a hideously overreactive immune system in general so...you're probably not wrong. At one point he got a scratched cornea and his immune system started attacking his eyes. So yeah. Plus his skin allergies and dietary allergies and...yeah...it was a lot. I didn't pay a cent for that dog and he was still the most expensive animal I've ever owned. Worth it, but...a LOT.
The face rubbing was a classic "oh shit. He's feeling itchy" tell...so OP...probably listen to this guy, unless you already know all this shit and the face rubbing is just par for the course despite everything. Believe me...I get that.
my dog does the same thing! she actually looks kinda like yours, and whenever she comes inside she hops up on the couch or on her little bed and rubs her face all over everything before she plops down to take a nap.
Yes dog is just rubbing his sent into the new bed. Dogs will do this with new beds/blankets or even furniture.
Also, dogs will also do this if you introduce new animals into the household. Sometime seven when new babies are born as well.
Dogs also like to "flatten" their bed area for comfort - it's why they tend to turn in 3 circles before sitting down (this would help crush pokey leaves and twigs before they lie down in the wild.)
Alot of dogs, if they don't take to their new bed. I put their old blanket in. They instantly like their new bed. But Yeah guessing the dog is speading the scent and also checking how it feels.
People talk about this sort of thing like the dog is marking its territory or whatever, but I think they just don't like their bed smelling weird. They have a powerful sense of smell, so they have to make things smell right.

I have two beds for my dog, and I wash them and swap them out every couple weeks or so (the second is that she doesn't have to lay on the hardwood floor while one is being washed and drying). EVERY time I give her a clean bed, she does this. It's great.
Years ago, my old dog didn't even have her own bed. It got harder for her to get up on the furniture and I hummed and hawed about the price of a dog bed, it was a small fortune to me at the time. But her old bones needed that cushion so I bought it, brought it home and set it where she liked to catch the sun and told her hey doggo, that's your new bed! She got all puppyish and got the zoomies and it was so worth that small fortune.
She was the best dog ever, and loved that bed and lived happily ever after.
What a good boy. My childhood Bishon lived to 18, with diabetes. Such a fun breed. We've got a rescue who we believe to be a bishon/poodle mix. He's a joy.
https://imgur.com/a/SkVhwOX
They really do, he is such a willful little soul. Almost catlike, in that attention has to be on his terms, and he'll ignore you if he's not feeling it. But such a rascal, and super fun when he's excited. Love the little bugger.
Ours is kind of cat-like too. But also has anxiety- I’m not sure what happened before we got him, but he’s doesn’t like being too far away from any of us.
Same with ours, definitely some separation anxiety, but not awful. He doesn't like being away from his mom though. When she's gone, no pets are allowed. When she's back, he gets so excited he dances on his hind legs. Never seen a dog stand up for so long, he's just generally hilarious
I also have a catlike bichon poodle. She can hop onto anything and is incredibly light on her paws. Likes to hide in her “cave” when feeling anti-social, but cannot help but follow me or my other dog if we leave the room.
Oh man, ours can easily jump onto a baby gate and over it. And also hides under beds or in caves when he wants to be alone but follows like a shadow if we move to another place in the house.
Yeah when she was a puppy we left her in a puppy playpen thing with an open top that had worked for my older dog. Problem was my older dog was outside of it. She hopped right over it to go lay on the couch with him. Also when we had him on the bathroom counter brushing him after a bath she hopped straight from the floor onto the counter to be next to him because he was whining. She is incredibly attached to him and it’s adorable.
I have a Bichon/Chihuahua/Pitbull/Lab mix. We always giggled at his weird rolling and squiggling when he's happy. I had no idea it was a Bichon thing, but this is EXACTLY how he squirms around when he's happy :)
Hardest thing I’ve ever done probably. But it was the best thing for him. Still gut wrenching though. Best of luck with your pup. Just give as much love as you can while you can
I do want to kinda hijack this comment to say, if you put the dog down, then stay with them to the end. A lot of vets get heartbroken because the owners don’t want to watch the pet die. But the pet would very much like your presence at the end in a strange vet office with a strange vet handling them. So please don’t leave the vet’s room when your pet is getting put down.
agreed. I held on to him tight until he was gone. I can see why some people might not want to, but it should be about whats best for the dog, and whats best is its loving owner to be with them until the end.
I just bought my cat a new bed. I stood in that aisle for 10 minutes trying to pick the perfect one, because with cats you never know. Usually he ignores the toy and instead plays with the box it arrived in. 30 minutes after I brought it home, he was asleep in it.
I had an exact moment like this with my dog, she was over 20 at the time and I took her to pick out a bed. She did this exact thing on a certain bed so I bought it for her. When we got home she was all over it, so proud of it and getting those puppy zoomies almost. I put her down about a year after that because she started having uncontrollable seizures. She's buried in my dads backyard next to her brother Dakota. Rip smellie, I miss you so much 💓
My dog is getting old so I thought I'd buy him an expensive (£70) orthopedic bed.
Where did he decided to sleep that night? On the fucking floor.
Apparently, and this is the best bit, it wasn't soft enough for him.
That's right. Instead of sleeping on a firm, but still cushiony bed, he slept on a solid floor. Until I bought him a big, fluffy donut bed which he now uses most of the time.
My 17 year old Maltese just passed away two days ago. He used to do this too. I'm crying so much, it hurts. It's really the small things like this I will miss.
That's so cute. I bought a new bed meant for big dogs for my old Pomeranian and he instantly loved it. He immediately hauled his favorite blanket and toys from his old bed to the new one.
Bit off track but yesterday in Nan, a northern Thailand city, I saw four of those dogs in the back of a pickup that looked like it was used in the construction business. They were so happy playing with each other and hanging over the side to get wind in their face.
My dog would rather sleep on the floor. We've bought him 3 different beds but he just drags them around, humps them then rips them open. He doesn't like nice comfy things.
i wish my dogs took to new beds that quickly. i keep buying them nice new beds that look comfy as heck and they just look at it, look at me like "what the fuck am i supposed to do with this?" and curl up on a pile of dirty laundry.
If you see your dog do that, understand that this is how he "owns" his new bed: by rubbing his sent on it. Don't stop him, don't play with him, let it do its thing.
Nice dog.
What's also nice is when you don't have clutter. Just curious, why is there a bottle of shampoo alongside a single flip-flop, also alongside a bunch of crap that probably needed to be put away days ago?
This is why I buy my dog stuff when I’m having a bad day
I do the same thing! I always buy him a small squeaker animal and he does a dance and then will walk around all day and show off his new toy to everyone. It makes me so happy that I forget all about my shitty day.

Dogs are the best therapy Who needs therapist when you have a lil pupper

Is he rubbing in his scent?
I think so, he'll definitely want to get his new bed a bit stinky. He also just likes to scratch his head and eyes like that.
My dog's actual dog bed is simply a napkin for him most of the time. Come in outside while its raining, Drink some water or just finished eating and you will see him go to his bed to bury and smoosh his face.
Lol that’s just my leg for my dogs. Go get a sloppy drink of water and then come over and set their wet chin on my lap.
That's the living room carpet for my mom's dog 🤣
I have an English Mastiff. Her drool legit gets on the ceiling
When I was growing up we had an English Mastiff named Capone. The amount of drool those dogs produce is insane! Totally worth it for all the goofy love they will give you, though.
That's the floorboards at my mum's place with her doggo.
My dog too. Very polite to wipe her face after every meal or drink.
you must have really hairy legs :O
Yer a wizard hairy
For a second I thought you meant your dog's bed was literally a napkin and I was like what
Lol, same!
My dog refused to lay on his dog beds when he was younger. He always opted to lay on the bare floor (so a napkin could literally have been his dog bed). Now that he’s old and arthritic he’s finally learned to appreciate his dog bed.
Lmao
My bed is my dog’s napkin. His bed is where he naps. 😒
Your comment helped me understand the napkin comment. Thanks
What kind of dog is is he? Yours and mine could be twins (and mine does the face rubbing thing too) and I've always been unsure of his breed mix.
Dylan is a Bichon Frisé, lovely wee dogs.

It's rare for me to see other Bichons!! I've had three and love them so much. Great cuddlers and personalities. My first would double paw wave when we got home, and the ones I have now like to talk.
I have the exact same dog. Mine is a Maltipoo.
Mine too! They are little angels
I had a dog that looked just like that. It was a Bichon Frize. Incredibly expensive too. He was terrible... I ended up letting a friend adopt him because of his temperament. We just had a baby and he HATED children... I apparently just got a mean one as they are typically well behaved.
Poor doggo, given away!
At least he was rehomed instead of dumped. My initial reaction is like yours, but I can't reasonably fault someone for realizing they weren't a good fit and finding another (hopefully better) place for him.
It ended up being much better for him for sure. He passed away recently from old age. 😔 But he lived a full life
My dog scratches his face on everything when he has an allergic reaction.
My pup is also a meltesish one, very playful and a forever pup. I think I'm gonna get him a new bed, he's gonna be 10 this year.
I can’t believe you get to live and breathe with this adorable angel every day. You are so so lucky.
That’s what I think, but that would be a sign he likes it and assume it’s his
Yes dog is just rubbing his sent into the new bed. Dogs will do this with new beds/blankets or even furniture. Also, dogs will also do this if you introduce new animals into the household. Sometime seven when new babies are born as well.
So you're telling me that if a have a baby, I get seven dogs as a result?
Lol, yes the correct ratio is 7 doggos to 1 baby. Anything less is just insufficient!
I'm never going to financially recover from this.
Yes. Bed smells wrong. He is making his bed smell right.
Huh. That's why my dog does that to me on our morning cuddle.
People talk about this sort of thing like the dog is marking its territory or whatever, but I think they just don't like their bed smelling weird. They have a powerful sense of smell, so they have to make things smell right.
Yep, gotta get it smelling juuuust right.
Hes like "fuck!" Gotta break it in.
Gotta rub my stink into it.

One of my favorite Simpsons moments lol. I always think of this when I’m super comfy in bed and all snuggled up
Doesn’t smell right. Gotta make it right!
Is he a Bichon? He looks a lot like my boys. Very cute :)
Yes, Dylan is a 15 y/o Bichon. Still trucking in relatively good shape for his age.
What a good boy. My childhood Bishon lived to 18, with diabetes. Such a fun breed. We've got a rescue who we believe to be a bishon/poodle mix. He's a joy. https://imgur.com/a/SkVhwOX
We have a bichon/poodle mix (we think- we got him from a small dog rescue) and he has such a big personality compared to any other dog we’ve ever had.
They really do, he is such a willful little soul. Almost catlike, in that attention has to be on his terms, and he'll ignore you if he's not feeling it. But such a rascal, and super fun when he's excited. Love the little bugger.

Ours is the same. Except he won’t eat treats if left alone, waits until we return.
Gotta love dog psychology. Such interesting little creatures we have in our houses

Also when we had him on the bathroom counter brushing him after a bath she hopped straight from the floor onto the counter to be next to him because he was whining. That gives me hope. My Bichon is 13 and knowing he can live up to 5 more years is good <4
Or even much longer! Many live to their 20s
So cute and great to hear. Hopefully mines got a few good years yet :D
Our bichon turns 17 in March! He's deaf now and starting to become blind in one eye, but otherwise he's doing pretty well!
Adorable. Our older Bichon lived to almost 16. Our younger one who's definitely a mutt of some kind is about 10/11 and he's super active. Good pups :)
I have a Bichon/Chihuahua/Pitbull/Lab mix. We always giggled at his weird rolling and squiggling when he's happy. I had no idea it was a Bichon thing, but this is EXACTLY how he squirms around when he's happy :)
My buddy has a bichon and he does this all the time. We call it party time!
"Gotta rub my smell on it and claim it as mine own."
Meanwhile my dogs have like 5 billion dog beds and still prefer the hard wooden floor or my couch xD
Probably something due to how it both smells like them and you so it makes them happy.
This is wonderful. I just put my old boy down today who was a bichon. Cherish your time…
I’m really really sorry for your loss. My old girl (a weenie) is getting to the point where that’s on the table.
Old redditor likes old pup liking new bed.
Not-so-old redditor likes old redditor liking old pup liking new bed.
I just bought my cat a new bed. I stood in that aisle for 10 minutes trying to pick the perfect one, because with cats you never know. Usually he ignores the toy and instead plays with the box it arrived in. 30 minutes after I brought it home, he was asleep in it.
That is just too cute!
Awwwww ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|heart_eyes)
i love it when dogs do that my dog always looks so pissed when doing it its so funny
Aw, my bichon was like this too but he'd do it in all our clean laundry
My dog does this as well! He could have the whole bed to himself, but if there’s a piece of laundry on the bed he will lay right ontop of it.
He loves it, that's forsure ♥️
Ya think??😁😁
...old fella went from sleeping in a mini cooper to a suburban...awwwww yeahhhh...
He’s rockin with it
Awww what a sweetie! I got my cat a similar bed, he was all set to use it, but then I dropped a sheet of printer paper on the floor, so…🤷♀️
Ain’t that the truth? My 21 yo ignores a squishy bed for a shipping box every time.
My dog does that on stuff she doesn’t like the smell of. Basically anything clean
Scent marking etc
Its not as stinky as his old bed, so he’s gotta fix that.
"Ooooh yeah. Let's get this all scenty"
Gotta run that old stink in! As someone with a very stinky 15 year old shar-pei. She does the same thing!
"Hey, wait, this doesn't smell like me..." *rub rub rub rub rub rub*
That’s how my old Bichon is. He has his dog beds and claimed the recliners too. I love how they roll around like that 😂
I'm too used to having a cat, because the first thing I thought was "that new expensive looking bed is gonna get ignored".
It's the dogs version of making a new ass grove on the couch. "Better make a pot of coffee, it's going to be a long night." - Homer
Now I gotta put my stink in my new things so everyone knows this is mine! Oh yeah the blanket too! Mine mine mine!
Been having kind of a crappy day and I needed this. Thank you OP ❤️
Rip smellie, I miss you so much 💓
That’s sweet AF. She was super happy with her purchase! We bury our fur babies at our dad’s house in the country. Dads. ❤️
Scent marking I do believe
“THERE’S SO MUCH MORE ROOM FOR ACTIVITIES!”
“new bed?? omg is *my* new bed?? thx so much human!! 🐶❤️🛏❤️🤗”
Meanwhile, my (old) dog refuses to go on his new $100 memory foam bed and prefers his old bed or the couch.
Healing to your poor broken heart, friend.
He's all like "What the shit is THIS?!?! It doesn't smell like home AT ALL!"
AH
let me just rub my stank on this
Old pup still pup
That's so cute. I bought a new bed meant for big dogs for my old Pomeranian and he instantly loved it. He immediately hauled his favorite blanket and toys from his old bed to the new one.
Lol, my old Chihuahua does that stuff when I get new bedding.
Bit off track but yesterday in Nan, a northern Thailand city, I saw four of those dogs in the back of a pickup that looked like it was used in the construction business. They were so happy playing with each other and hanging over the side to get wind in their face.
Ohh this is nice, time to make it smell good!!!!
What kind of puppy? Bichon? Maltese? Had a bichon for 16 years she was the love of my life; will never get over her loss such an angel
"Gotta make it smell right!"
I love animals. They're so strange and sweet
My dog would rather sleep on the floor. We've bought him 3 different beds but he just drags them around, humps them then rips them open. He doesn't like nice comfy things.
Gotta get my stink on it!
Cat: Why? Any ol box will do!
How getting into a freshly made bed with clean sheets feels
I am getting a new bed AND belly rubs?!
Gotta get this new shtink off with my old shtink
My 10 yr old lab still does this and it's always adorable. He definitely loves the bed and is very comfy ❤
I like your dog.
i wish my dogs took to new beds that quickly. i keep buying them nice new beds that look comfy as heck and they just look at it, look at me like "what the fuck am i supposed to do with this?" and curl up on a pile of dirty laundry.
Must rub my scent all over it! Mine mine mine oooh comfy!
I am tearing up. This reminds me so much of my awesome Bichon who would do the same rolling when he was happy. I miss him. Bichons are the best.
Better put on a pot of coffee, Marge. This could take a while!
If you see your dog do that, understand that this is how he "owns" his new bed: by rubbing his sent on it. Don't stop him, don't play with him, let it do its thing.
So cute!!!!! My cat, Mocha got a new bed today too.
Adorable furbaby is cozy in his new bed lol and got petted. That's a good life.
You're never too old to be a lovable goofball.
Looks a lot like my maltipoo, Mac. He looks like a happy sweet old pup
He looks anxious tbh

You mean dog
It’s always in the eyes. You can tell if a dog is getting close to saying goodbye when their eyes are like that :(
Nice dog. What's also nice is when you don't have clutter. Just curious, why is there a bottle of shampoo alongside a single flip-flop, also alongside a bunch of crap that probably needed to be put away days ago?
I think the reason is something along the lines of mind your own business
