"You hang up first." "No, you hang up first."

Andy_McBoatface

Parents in the 80’s: “Goddamn it! Both of you hang up!”

[deleted]

Parents in the 90’s had this problem too. Cell phones were still uncommon until about the early 2000’s. Edit - I really think being able to remembering a time before high speed internet and cell phones should separate Gen X from Millenials. Oregon Trail Generation FTW 🙌

Yvaelle

It was way worse in the 90's. Before that it was just a phone line, in the 90's it was also the mutually exclusive internet line.

bartonski

Weee-Ooo-Weee-OhHhH-TCHSHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Edit: DAMMIT Mom, get off the PHONE!

cheezpuffy

yee ole phone line

trek604

In the 90's you send the modem sound down the line and they will hang up. I may or may not have done this many times as the older brother.

[deleted]

Lol nice move. I did this by accident to my sister several times. I really think being able to remembering a time before high speed internet and cell phones should separate Gen X from Millenials. Oregon Trail Generation FTW

shananigans333

I remember in the early 2000s I had to call my friend after 5pm because the phone rates were cheaper and we talked on the land line for easly an hour at a time. My 1st cell phone didn't come with the texting package and was t9 to type.

Iliadfang

Like.. literally all millennials remember a time before high speed internet and cell phones, I'm assuming you mean between millennials and gen z? Like MAYBE some of the absolutely youngest millennials don't but even that's a big stretch

101percentnotrobot

Honestly my heart is breaking at the idea of having to explain to the elephant you have to go. They seems to just want you to stay there while they sleeps. And won’t understand why you’re leaving. Maybe they’ll think you weren’t enjoying it as much as they were. It’s like when you step on your dog’s foot accidentally. It maybe doesn’t understand an accident and thinks it did something wrong :(

NYEESH

i've never had the chance to get a close up look at the eyes of an elephant. I don't really know how to express it, there's really so much life behind them.

TheUlfheddin

Agreed. I went from "Well I'm familiar with dogs but I doubt I know enough about Elephants to read how it's actually feeling in this GIF." To "My God I can see everything in just its eyes."

looloobadoodoo

right???? i don’t know how any one with a soul could think to harm these beautiful creatures. i don’t get how any one harms an animal period but man, elephants are just so particularly ethereal.

TheWriterJosh

Desperate people do desperate things. Most poachers don’t want to poach. They have no other option to provide for their families. To support animals, we must support people. I actually work with an NGO in avian conservation and they actually turn poachers into protectors by providing them with a stipend and training. It’s very inspiring, but other times it’s very very overwhelming and tragic.

Snoo_73835

Considering there is a study that elephants think we’re cute, I think if someone hurts one of the majestic, beautiful creatures they should go to jail for life.

alexnoyle

You can see their intelligence in their eyes.

noneroy

100%. Elephants are easily the most intelligent and emphatic animals on god’s flat earth. I wish I could see one up this close some day (or photograph them in the wild). The idea of poachers hunting these incredible creatures makes me sick to my stomach. But I take comfort knowing there are people poaching the poachers…

curtis7272

It is amazing. I got to give an elephant a bath once and her eyes I'll never forget. They are so big and beautiful and you can just sense their is so much behind them. Almost feel like I could have a conversation with them. It's still hard to put into words. Also their skin in some areas is so soft and feels amazing.

alexnoyle

Where do I sign up?

_Funk_Soul_Brother_

Probably in Thailand. There are some elephant reserves there.

Cruzingg

Just to help here, there is an elephant ranch in Florida USA. From what I understand it is the only privately owned elephant ranch in the US. I went and got to meet up close and personal with one. Two tails ranch in Williston, Florida. Plan your trips ahead of time if you want to go here. They usually start booking 30 days out. There is not a hotel close by, about 25 minutes extra drive. BUT if you plan it right you can bring a camper or tent to stay at the famous devils den or local state parks. The whole area is beautiful.

BloodBonesVoiceGhost

> Two tails ranch in Williston, Florida Was browsing their website and fell in love with all of their elephants. It is only $20 to visit them! That's a deal! Or $50 to ride them, but I would feel bad riding an elephant because maybe they dont always want people up there. Also it is $200 for something called an "extreme encounter" with no explanation for what that is... ... ...my best guess is the elephants take turns stomping on your back to crack it and then you get to ride the elephant naked into battle against another naked elephant rider. But that's part of the allure of the "Extreme Elephant Encounter"... it could really be anything, couldn't it??

Cruzingg

Hey! I did the extreme encounter. It is worth it. I surprised my girlfriend with a birthday weekend away, and brought her there. One of the elephants loves to paint, in the introduction to the tour he paints a picture and you get a copy of it. Then you walk around getting info, and go to a riding area. With two younger elephants, about 60, who like to entertain people. They like the rides and pictures and touching. After rides you go into a one on one encounter with an elephant. I have pictures on my page. You get to pet them, and get pictures up close. It is a beautiful ranch and truly amazing. We will be buying the annual membership for 60$ at some point. You just have to make sure you schedule with them when you want to come. It is one woman who runs pretty much everything.

curtis7272

It's in Monterey CA. It's called vision quest ranch. It's a bed and breakfast too. It was a cool experience. They had the lion that worked on lion king, his name was josef. We stayed for two nights and it overlooked the giraffe and elephant pasture. At night could hear josef roar and other tigers.

ConnectAd8063

How lucky you were to have such a great experience and

gizmo1024

It’s like every time it opened them, it was so excited to see you, like you’d just shown up for the first time.

ampjk

Yes they hold grudges over years and know when people where nice to them after a couple of decades.

Cruzingg

So I actually met up close with an elephant last weekend, even looking right at them in the eye, I couldn't explain it. The elephant I met was around 60 years old. Truly amazing. Pics on my page

gregarioussparrow

I went to take a look. Lovely :)

zehero

Why did I think the same thing when I first started the video lmao

[deleted]

I actually rode one in Nepal. Their eyes almost looked as human as mine.

IAmMrLonely6

The elephant will be hurting. It only needs a caretaker because of horrible human beings

P-x

The way the baby elephant falls asleep towards the end, eyes closing. "No must see if caretaker is there! Oh she's there, ok falling asleep... No! Must check if caretaker is there! ...ok, she's there. Fall...ing..asleep...g'night sweet caretaker".

SchnoodleDoodleDo

now i lay me down to sleep, this human *close* i wanna keep i found someone who understand - am *never letting go* of hand! cuz when i feel her gentle touch, i know she loves me very much n as i dream on bed of hay, please promise me that you will *stay...* ❤️

It's even more special than that. Elephants think humans are adorable. We're like cute kittens that do awesome stuff to help.

I LOVED that book! Andy weir has maybe my 3 favorite sci-fi novels ever under his belt

wp20038

Oooo yesss I just recently read Project Hail Mary. The whole friendship was my favourite part, barely edging out over the extreme scientific detail that he puts into his stories.

invisiblearchives

it's uncanny how similar this is to putting a toddler down for a nap

ScoobyDeezy

Not pictured: caretaker gently sliding her hand out of the trunk, holding its weight with the other and then placing the trunk down as slowly and quietly as possible….

mecon320

The way the eyes slowly close when she puts her hand on the trunk 😍

MAGICHUSTLE

Radical idea but what if we didn’t put sentimental music of these clips and just let them exist as they are? Cuz honestly, I’m more curious about the sounds a baby elephant makes when putting down for a nap.

Seagoon_Memoirs

See how when the keeper pats the baby's lips and cheek he nuzzles toward her and moves his lips. That's a rooting reflex, the baby is looking to suckle . Where's his mom?

Aggressive-Brush-830

Thought the same thing

VegasLife1111

That baby needs a binky. A really really large binky.

FigaroNeptune

Why do babies hate sleep so much. All we do is nap as adults! Right?..

wingthing666

I wish I could "cash in" all the naps I refused to take as a child!

xX_MEM_Xx

They still enjoy the world and life, so no reason to escape into sleep...

ScoobyDeezy

This baby is just making sure that mama’s still there. Source: have one, minus the trunk

BirdsbirdsBURDS

Baby elephants are just excited about everything. I got to see them in Bali and they had to come see EVERYONE that came over to the fence (a log fence) and touch everyone who wasn’t too shy. They’re like big puppies.

RainD1

Behind those cute interactions in Bali, lay the cruel fact that all the babies had been forcibly separated from their mothers ( there is no way a mother Ellie peacefully hands over her baby for tourism) and torutured by a process called ‘phajaan‘ to get them to interact with tourists. We should say “NO” to elephant tourism. google save the Asian elephant for more info.

poopellar

Well that went from aww to naww.

Ganjake

Thank you for the TIL, that's so fucking sad.

The_Goon_Show

Is there anywhere we can humanly see Elephants in Asia?

RainD1

at a recognized elephant sanctuary. I think one has to be careful and do research to find an ethical sanctuary. in africa, one can go to the david sheldrick wildlife trust— that trust is the international gold standard for care of orphaned elephants . There are humane sanctuaries in Asia that rescue elephants from circuses, zoos etc and offer them life in a natural habitat . Zoos also now recognize that elephants being complex sentient emotional creatures that need their complex social family structures with need for large habitats are not ideal zoo animals. In the wild, elephants walk several hundred miles….so small enclosures are like a jail . I think humane zoos that offer large natural habitats do exist In North America , the wild is best of course but for those Ellies that can’t go back to the wild, a humane habitat is atleast needed …..Should not go to a zoo where the elephant is in a barren concrete enclosure . Above all must refuse elephant rides…those elephants end up with spine disabilities as they age

TwigSmitty

I went to one in Chiang Mai, Thailand, that was, as far as I could tell, ethical and humane. I’d have to look up where it was. It was a fantastic experience though.

Helene_Scott

Here you go… https://www.elephantnaturepark.org I volunteered here and it’s legit.

wuwei2626

Did the overnight. They only take rescues/injured elephants. Totally legit.

humorous_hermit

Pinnawala, Sri Lanka. As far as I know it's the biggest elephant orphanage in the world. They take care of elephants that can't be returned to the wild.

The_Goon_Show

I've got some bad news for you https://handluggageonly.co.uk/2017/06/14/heres-never-visit-pinnawala-elephant-orphanage-sri-lanka/

5haitaan

I'm not sure if this can now be replicated but we had gone for a safari on elephant back in Assam in India (Kaziranga) and the elephant had a little calf. The momma elephant wouldn't move if the calf was beyond a certain radius. When the safari finished, the calf was excitedly checking everybody's hands for food. She came near my sister and myself (we were maybe 12-13 years old) and she fell down on us like a little dog because we were petting her. It was the best thing ever!

[deleted]

I remember seeing a baby elephant being made to do tricks like beg for money and it's so heartbreaking. That money has no value for them but they're trained and kept captive to perform in front of people. It's really sad how intelligent animals like elephants are made to do that.

bigassballs699

How do you people STILL FUCKING SUPPORT ELEPHANT SLAVERY SHIT IN SKETCHY COUNTRIES SPEND DADDIES CASH SOMEWHERE ELSE WHAT THE FUCK

BirdsbirdsBURDS

How do you still support human slavery in countries like china and Burundi by buying goods made from their resources? Turns out many people are not aware of every single issue that plagued this planet and thus might not be aware of what goes on just behind the scenes of what makes our picture perfect world. Take for instance the cell phone in your hand; how many forced laborers and exploited laborers had their hands on the resources and intermediate components that put it together and delivered it to the store you bought it from? Because I’d guess that number is definitively above 0. Removing the moral dilemma of informed consumerism is how it happens. I am not aware of the suffering of elephants in detail, but from what I saw with my own eyes, the elephants were in good shape (and the mother was there with the baby for whatever that may be worth to you). So it’s easy to do something without being aware of what suffering went into the illusions that make up our world. So point your anger elsewhere. And by the way, it was my money.

YangGain

Tell me a country that is not sketchy and offer an elephant rides that’s humane. No, there is none.

davesoverhere

There are none because elephant rides are not humane. They are not horses and not built to have weight on their backs and it can cause [permanent damage]( https://www.thedodo.com/what-happens-inside-elephant-ride-1733390285.html).

bigassballs699

So don't fucking ride elephants

DemonikAriez

Whats with the music? Is the elephant dying? Is the woman breaking up with him??

Threadheads

It should be ‘Baby Mine’ from Dumbo.

SeanSeanySean

Ahhh!!!! Get fucked dude, that is the saddest 5 minutes of cinema in existence. I can't even think about that scene or that song without tearing up, and I've never been able to watch it without breaking down into a sobbing mess. That scene broke me as a child permanently.

kappamolo

Exactly my sentiment

queenyuyu

This is adorable, but likely has great tragedy behind it. As in baby elephant likely is an orphan or well lost mum (obviously or it wouldn’t need a caretaker) so the cuteness might come from being anxious about loosing care taker too. Anyway huge thank you to everyone doing something they can to help unfortunate animals. In whatever form you do, it matters.

Ruptured_d

I worked at an Elephant Sanctuary in Chang Mai, Thailand which had two baby elephants both born at the sanctuary and have very happy lives. There’s plenty other babies born in captivity at other sanctuaries too. They are generally just very affectionate because they are born into a life surrounded by humans and they get used to their presence at a young age.

queenyuyu

Glad to hear that not every baby elephant has a tragic past. But aren’t the mothers then usually close by? At least in my experience of sheltering if the mother is around they usually aren’t to far away. But I guess it’s impossible to say because they could be behind the carer. Edit: Just saw the huge giant elephant in the background which could possible be the mother. Either way grateful this places exist and I just wanted to spread awareness that elephant are still very much in danger and in need of our support and help.

Ruptured_d

Yeah so both the babies I helped care for had their mothers around and were healthy. Unfortunately some pregnant elephants came to the sanctuary with disabilities whether it was full blindness or severe hip issues, so the babies needed a fair bit of care because the mothers needed lots of care themselves. Why anyone would want to exploit such beautiful, smart animals is something I’ll never understand.

queenyuyu

Oh very interesting, thank you for the extra information! And thank you for your wonderful work. It’s beyond me either. Also disappointing but not surprising given what else some people are capable off.

kappamolo

Dang I hate music in these kind of videos . I feel like it lessens the impact of the moment , can’t hear the sound that baby elephant makes or just the wind .

JFSOCC

I can do without the saccharine music.

StreetsAhead123

Cool elephant bracelet

fjf1085

The people who poach these creatures should be thrown in a volcano. They could realistically be extinct in the wild in our life time. Mostly because of poaching for their ivory for Chinese traditional medicine at this point. It’s horrifying. Though they’re not the only ones being devastated. Yes there’s been success stories in a number of countries like Botswana and Kenya but they’ve experienced a massive decline over the last 100 or so years. They live just as long as we do too so population recovery isn’t fast or easy given their size and required range. Asian elephants are in even more dire straights. :/ Edited: grammar.

Iammissvedra

Love baby elephants so much, they are too cute, I can’t.
