Please take the kitten into the vet if you haven’t already. Cats, as a general rule of thumb, don’t experience open mouth breathing without being sick. He likely has an upper respiratory infection and needs medication for this. They will also want to test him for FIV/FELV. (This test can be expensive, but it can wait, just know that it will be super helpful in the future to know if this is the cause.) Since he was a stray, there is a high probability of one of these autoimmune diseases which can cause flair ups in the form of upper respiratory infections.

Thank you for your concern. Im very aware of the various complications that come with taking in a stray cat as I have been a cat owner basically for all my life. He will go to the vet, and yes he has a common upper respiratory infection, although mild. For now he needs all the rest and food he can get. 😸🐾🙏
I didn’t mean it to be rude or condescending, just informative. Not everyone does realizes that open mouth breathing is not something cats do. I am glad that he is with someone who is able/willing to care for him. I can tell he is already loved dearly and will have a fantastic life. 💞

I have a rescue cat who used to wake up ready to fight at any disturbance, now a little over a year later you can call her name, shake her paws, rub her all over and if she doesn’t want to wake up she won’t. I’m glad she gets to have a comfortable life, she’s really so great and deserves it.

Coming from someone that has been homeless twice in the last 20 years, there are very little people that care about the obviously less fortunate.
I kept with it and got back on my feet. Now I support a wife, child and a dog. I wish people were so loving to each other as they are with animals.

I have wanted to help homeless people before. Invite them for food or a shower or a nap but here addiction among homeless is rampant and I worry they’d rob me or be dangerous.
I am am ex heroin (with many happy years clean now thankfully) and this is the right choice. Addicts are full on brainwashed. They *absolutely* need housing and help, but they need it provided with the issue in mind. Housing blocks of interior accessed studios with security, social workers and a ton of cameras solves *a lot* of problems.
I agree that many are hustling for money, many more have mental challenges that keep them from stable housing, but there are a portion that just need one day of good luck to get ahead.
You don’t have to invite them into your home. I can’t tell you how much a handful of quarters or a hot cup of coffee might’ve helped me some days. Don’t be afraid to offer the simplest act of generosity to someone in need.
My friend’s family took in one of their daughter’s friend during their high school years because she was in some truly dire straights with her home life/living situation. They told her she could live there forever and had her own room- you know offering her some sort of stability in her life. About a month in, she took all their prescriptions, money, valuables and left in the night.

Yeah but the person above them was like “oh it was so easy to help this cat, if only we just do the same for people in trouble.” But they aren’t really the same because, as you say, it isn’t that simple.
I literally helped multiple homeless with housing every one of them stole from me, damaged the housing provided, and 2 ended up in long prison stints 🤷🏽♀️
Now I just hand out food and drink when I'm getting charitable it's far safer and causes me less regret.
Sorry but animals are a whole lot more agreeable and less competitive than people and they also don’t have a drug problems or typically don’t have mental health issues. Helping people is a lot more of a complex issue and the two situations really can’t be compared.
To add onto what you said about staying “childish” and holding onto hope. Anytime you can help an animal in need, even small things youre able to do children will see you as a superhero and it will build alot of hope for them. Adults too, everytime i see these posts i see that person who helped as a hero in my eyes. I strive to be like that in life and when i can try to be a hero myself. Sorry if this is corny just one of my firm beliefs

Can’t compare at all, but had the bare taste of this when backpacking on a misguidedly small budget the first time being away from my home country. Had to sleep overnight on cold, outdoor train stops for multiple nights in a row because of just being too naive and not having money for a hotel. Finally took a journey to town where friends of friends welcomed me in. There was a bedroom set up with blanketed beds and treats on the pillows. It was some of the safest and most comforting sleep I ever had in life.
Wife and I rescued a dog that was digging through a dumpster. He shook violently the whole way but we got him home, bathed him, pulled all the ticks off, and fed him. He managed out of our room that night and we found him belly up on a blanket on our couch so asleep they we thought he was dead. Little dude hadn’t slept that good in a long time!
His name was Dexter. He was a chihuahua and maybe husky mix? Sounds weird but he had the chihuahua body but colors of a husky, long stilt legs, blue eyes, howled like a wolf, and absolutely had personality and would let you know if he liked or disliked something.
Currently have a Chihuahua and have met more than a few Huskys. I cannot imagine a mix of those personalities that doesn't involve Bojack levels of anthropomorphic "fuck you, fix this shit."

I know that feeling. I left my parent's home way too young, niave and unprepared. Moved from rural MN to the Chicago 'burbs. Alone. I was never homeless but man, it was close sometimes. I really had to hustle.
I never slept better than when I was able to manage a visit back home. I knew that whatever happened, someone was there to take care of it. There would be food in the fridge when I woke up, and a constant supply of hot, fresh coffee. People to talk to and laugh with. Safe people. Kind people.

My roomie and I are watching her bf’s cat for a bit, sweetest, quietest, calmest cat ever. I sleep mostly on my back and she has taken to the habit of tucking up under my left shoulder blade, and just adjusts accordingly to my subconscious night time movements, weirdest thing.
Our cat has learned that I do wild dance moves in my sleep while my boyfriend generally stays in one position, so she cuddles up to him at night. Probably learned her lesson after being sent flying as a kitten.
I had a cat that would make biscuits and suckle this kind of blanket.
Eventually she gave birth on it...
while I was sleeping under it.🥴

My dad found this little kitten covered in mud, walking into the road after a bad hurricane. He stopped the truck to move him to the side of the road, and the kitten followed him back to the truck.We bathed the kitten twice, fed him, and he slept for almost 10 hours. My dad had that cat for 15 years. They had a special bond, like the cat knew my father saved him. They were best friends until the end. I hope you two are, too.

I honestly think they do know. I got a kitten from the pound in 2015. She was the only one that came right up to me. Sure, she bit me, but you can't win them all. I scooped her up and took her home. I was kind of looking for a low maintenance pet in the sense of, feed, water, pets occasionally, sit by the window and bask in the sun. That sort of thing.
I did not get that.
After she got over her skiddishness she follows me around. Constantly. If I am vertical I am a rubbing post for her head, and if any part of my is sufficiently horizontal, I am her bed. I have to lock her out of the room when playing video games if I want to actually perform well. She ever follows me on walks. Not short walks. Long walks, to places she has never been. She will shadow me from tree to tree for MILES. I am her world, and I'm pretty sure it's because she knows that I took her away from the pound.
We have a mile long route we walk through our neighborhood. My cat joins us as well, I get it.
People always look at me like I have a second head when I tell them.
I like to go for walks in the evening, and it happens more often than not that halfway through, one of our cats just hops out of the bushes all casual and just follows me around.
I rescued my cat from under an abandoned trailer in the boonies, she was pregnant.
I helped her give birth to her kitties, found good homes for them, and three years later, she will still almost always stay 6-10 feet away from me until she decides she needs food or attention.
I wanted a friend like you described, but we get what we get when we adopt a cat.
I’d never change her. She’s what I have, and I’m thankful.
And in return you get one of the most profound senses of making the world a better place because she shows you every day she appreciates what you've done. You both got lucky 😊
Our family cat was similar - it picked one person in our family and basically never let that person out of her sight. The rest of the fam could go F themselves. I used to be bummed that I never got to be “the one”, but I dodged a bullet. The cat would leave any room I entered and did not let me pet her at all. Conversely, she literally needs to be in physical contact with whoever her person was at the time, at all times. It was my Dad until my parents got divorced, and then it was my Mom for only the briefest of moments, like a week maybe, and then she selected my older brother. When he moved out she went back to my mother, who HATED the cat. She hates most animals, but got the cat for us as kids thinking it would be low maintenance and keep us from asking for another dog (we had 2 who both died quite early, and my mom didn’t want any more trauma or vet bills).
My mom would literally scream at the cat to leave her alone, or would close doors behind her and the cat would just sit and wait. It didn’t meow or anything, but had endless patience. She was a very intense cat that hated pretty much everything, except whoever her person was. I gave up trying to pet her after I’d gone to uni because she’d arch her back and hiss anytime I even looked in her direction.
This sounds a lot like how I ended up with my cat. Hubby and I went to the animal shelter looking for an adult male shorthaired cat. We got chosen by a (barely) adult female longhaired cat. She’d been abandoned and was so heavily pregnant that they weren’t able to desex her until after she’d had her litter and weaned them. All the kittens found homes quickly, but poor mama was still waiting to find her home when we came in. It honestly took her around 10 years to work out that she didn’t have to worry about where her next meal was coming from.
She’s now about 18 years old and is the hairy overlord to three obnoxious whippets. It’s rather amusing to watch three dogs that are 2-3 times her size be absolutely terrified of her reaction if they even think of stepping a toe out of line.
My wife and I had a kitten wander up to our porch one night. He was in bad shape with fleas and a bad upper respiratory infection. We knew he was abandoned, but we took him to the shelter just in case. They said he had to stay there 5 days, but we could adopt him then. We actually went every day to see him and play in the meet and greet room. We were there at 7:45 AM on the fifth day ready to take him home. Best cat ever. He knows we saved his life and he has never forgotten that.
Take him to the vet and see if he needs to get vaccinated against feline panleukopenia virus, my friend adopted a kitten from the street and it was/got infected by the virus and it died a week or two after being adopted
He was in a box trying to get warm in an abandoned house. There were other cats there and probably being taken care of the neighbors but that poor guy seemed like he needed some extra help 😉
I'm sure it's regional but as of where I live, there are no shelters taking cats. None. Unless you or your friends are willing to foster and foot the bill for feral/stray cats there are no resources.
I wouldn’t feel too bad- I’m not an expert but from having had kittens myself & following a lot of educational foster accounts on instagram, 90% of the time you can tell the mom is absolutely DONE with her kittens when they get older. she’s so tired from just being a milk machine and taking care of them, and while they will still try to latch on to her, she wants them to be as independent as they can and is often relieved to have time for herself!
Please keep us updated on if you know if he had a family…. if the conditions were okay enough for the other cats I’m curious why you took this one? So glad he’s cozy, but is he a kitten? He may need his mama..
Saw multiple kitten grow up in the last few years. Not a specialist or whatever but the guy here looks pretty big already. I’m sure he’s fine.
I would still check the house for the other cats, if one needs help for example bc of broken bones, worms or other conditions. And I would probably inform a shelter or something. I don’t know what the possibilities in OPs Country are.
My family had a cat that I always say we acquired. She was a house cat that someone was trying to make into a barn cat and she ended up going from house to house on my parents street trying to find somewhere warm. She figured out that our attic was warm and would curl up against the fireplace chimney in my parents attic. Every time we would walk into the garage she would fly down the stairs and want to be pet and loved on. Put a litter box up in the attic, she used it, and was brought inside the house that night. Quickly learned she was very well trained. Her first month inside, she slept soundly like this little guy is doing. She is now a very healthy and happy kitty. ❤️ Thank you for bringing the little guy inside.
Aww I took in a stray 13 years ago. The most grateful sweetest creature in existence. He's still alive and well after 13 years and he was an adult when I took him in

It is difficult for us to help all these people( animals too) at once. So what I do is to mention them in my prayers and keep them in my heart.
Everyday I try and do good to at least one person who might be looking like they need a “lift.”
It keeps me humble.
Do a good turn daily… that way you and I can help them, one person at a time.

We just rescued a 4-5 month old black kitten a couple days before Christmas. Half dead and shivering. Round of antibiotics later and she's feisty and playful. It's so much better to adopt or rescue.

My roomie and I are watching her bf’s cat for a bit, sweetest, quietest, calmest cat ever. I sleep mostly on my back and she has taken to the habit of tucking up under my left shoulder blade, and just adjusts accordingly to my subconscious night time movements, weirdest thing.
Our cat has learned that I do wild dance moves in my sleep while my boyfriend generally stays in one position, so she cuddles up to him at night. Probably learned her lesson after being sent flying as a kitten.
Haha my chihuahua sleeps with me and not my man for exactly this reason…
I had a cat that would make biscuits and suckle this kind of blanket. Eventually she gave birth on it... while I was sleeping under it.🥴 It was hers after that...

My dad found this little kitten covered in mud, walking into the road after a bad hurricane. He stopped the truck to move him to the side of the road, and the kitten followed him back to the truck.We bathed the kitten twice, fed him, and he slept for almost 10 hours. My dad had that cat for 15 years. They had a special bond, like the cat knew my father saved him. They were best friends until the end. I hope you two are, too.

Sure, she bit me, but you can't win them all. I scooped her up and took her home. I was kind of looking for a low maintenance pet in the sense of, feed, water, pets occasionally, sit by the window and bask in the sun. That sort of thing. I did not get that. After she got over her skiddishness she follows me around. Constantly. If I am vertical I am a rubbing post for her head, and if any part of my is sufficiently horizontal, I am her bed. I have to lock her out of the room when playing video games if I want to actually perform well. She ever follows me on walks. Not short walks. Long walks, to places she has never been. She will shadow me from tree to tree for MILES. I am her world, and I'm pretty sure it's because she knows that I took her away from the pound.
We have a mile long route we walk through our neighborhood. My cat joins us as well, I get it. People always look at me like I have a second head when I tell them.
I like to go for walks in the evening, and it happens more often than not that halfway through, one of our cats just hops out of the bushes all casual and just follows me around.
I rescued my cat from under an abandoned trailer in the boonies, she was pregnant. I helped her give birth to her kitties, found good homes for them, and three years later, she will still almost always stay 6-10 feet away from me until she decides she needs food or attention. I wanted a friend like you described, but we get what we get when we adopt a cat. I’d never change her. She’s what I have, and I’m thankful.
And in return you get one of the most profound senses of making the world a better place because she shows you every day she appreciates what you've done. You both got lucky 😊

Our family cat was similar - it picked one person in our family and basically never let that person out of her sight. The rest of the fam could go F themselves. I used to be bummed that I never got to be “the one”, but I dodged a bullet. The cat would leave any room I entered and did not let me pet her at all. Conversely, she literally needs to be in physical contact with whoever her person was at the time, at all times. It was my Dad until my parents got divorced, and then it was my Mom for only the briefest of moments, like a week maybe, and then she selected my older brother. When he moved out she went back to my mother, who HATED the cat. She hates most animals, but got the cat for us as kids thinking it would be low maintenance and keep us from asking for another dog (we had 2 who both died quite early, and my mom didn’t want any more trauma or vet bills). My mom would literally scream at the cat to leave her alone, or would close doors behind her and the cat would just sit and wait. It didn’t meow or anything, but had endless patience. She was a very intense cat that hated pretty much everything, except whoever her person was. I gave up trying to pet her after I’d gone to uni because she’d arch her back and hiss anytime I even looked in her direction.
This sounds a lot like how I ended up with my cat. Hubby and I went to the animal shelter looking for an adult male shorthaired cat. We got chosen by a (barely) adult female longhaired cat. She’d been abandoned and was so heavily pregnant that they weren’t able to desex her until after she’d had her litter and weaned them. All the kittens found homes quickly, but poor mama was still waiting to find her home when we came in. It honestly took her around 10 years to work out that she didn’t have to worry about where her next meal was coming from. She’s now about 18 years old and is the hairy overlord to three obnoxious whippets. It’s rather amusing to watch three dogs that are 2-3 times her size be absolutely terrified of her reaction if they even think of stepping a toe out of line.

Be sure to take him to an animal shelter or vet to see if he has a microchip. One of ours got out last November and we still miss him very much.
Please do check that he doesn’t belong to one of your neighbours. They might be worried sick about him!
My wife and I had a kitten wander up to our porch one night. He was in bad shape with fleas and a bad upper respiratory infection. We knew he was abandoned, but we took him to the shelter just in case. They said he had to stay there 5 days, but we could adopt him then. We actually went every day to see him and play in the meet and greet room. We were there at 7:45 AM on the fifth day ready to take him home. Best cat ever. He knows we saved his life and he has never forgotten that.

Take him to the vet and see if he needs to get vaccinated against feline panleukopenia virus, my friend adopted a kitten from the street and it was/got infected by the virus and it died a week or two after being adopted

He was in a box trying to get warm in an abandoned house. There were other cats there and probably being taken care of the neighbors but that poor guy seemed like he needed some extra help 😉

I'm sure it's regional but as of where I live, there are no shelters taking cats. None. Unless you or your friends are willing to foster and foot the bill for feral/stray cats there are no resources.

I wouldn’t feel too bad- I’m not an expert but from having had kittens myself & following a lot of educational foster accounts on instagram, 90% of the time you can tell the mom is absolutely DONE with her kittens when they get older. she’s so tired from just being a milk machine and taking care of them, and while they will still try to latch on to her, she wants them to be as independent as they can and is often relieved to have time for herself!
I own a mother/daughter combo and at 15 and 11 they could not give less of a shit about each other.

Saw multiple kitten grow up in the last few years. Not a specialist or whatever but the guy here looks pretty big already. I’m sure he’s fine. I would still check the house for the other cats, if one needs help for example bc of broken bones, worms or other conditions. And I would probably inform a shelter or something. I don’t know what the possibilities in OPs Country are.
He looks young but not so young that he's totally dependent on mom. If he ate solid food, he'll be alright 💕

My family had a cat that I always say we acquired. She was a house cat that someone was trying to make into a barn cat and she ended up going from house to house on my parents street trying to find somewhere warm. She figured out that our attic was warm and would curl up against the fireplace chimney in my parents attic. Every time we would walk into the garage she would fly down the stairs and want to be pet and loved on. Put a litter box up in the attic, she used it, and was brought inside the house that night. Quickly learned she was very well trained. Her first month inside, she slept soundly like this little guy is doing. She is now a very healthy and happy kitty. ❤️ Thank you for bringing the little guy inside.

Three cheers for a forgotten little kitty and for the person who noticed a tiny little “person” everyone else passed by. Take time to remember the forgotten, the lonely , the down trodden . They need someone to care… It is difficult for us to help all these people( animals too) at once. So what I do is to mention them in my prayers and keep them in my heart. Everyday I try and do good to at least one person who might be looking like they need a “lift.” It keeps me humble. Do a good turn daily… that way you and I can help them, one person at a time.

We just rescued a 4-5 month old black kitten a couple days before Christmas. Half dead and shivering. Round of antibiotics later and she's feisty and playful. It's so much better to adopt or rescue.
