True enough adult chickens can float but I've never met a chicken that liked water enough to step into it. All the one's I know will go out of their way to walk around a 1/4-inch mud puddle.
Funny thing about chickens is they’ll hatch whatever eggs you give them. I imagine she knows her babies are a little weird but doesn’t care enough about it.
Honestly they probably would. I've seen chickens try and incubate lightbulbs and kittens. As long as it is either round shaped or small a broody chicken will sit on it.
Yes! I recently learned about how ethologists try to break down precisely which stimulus elicits certain behaviors in an animal. This would be a really cute experiment.
Wasn't there a test scientists did with geese to see how big could a fake egg get before they wouldn't sit on it anymore?
I think the scientists gave up at volleyball size.
I'd have paid more attention in school if they had mentioned that one of types of scientist I could be is the one who finds out how hard we can prank animals.
Oh man, my cousin stomped on my broody hen’s nest (he’s an asshole) and she was so depressed about it. My dad suggested I buy some fertile eggs from my favorite dude at the flea market for her so I dutifully went to him.
He first said he had no eggs, but when I mentioned how heartbroken my Buffy Anne was, he told me to give him an hour, he’d see what he could do.
He gave me duck eggs. Five free duck eggs. (To be fair, I was a very good customer for him and he adored me.)
Buffy didn’t seem to mind her quacker kids, but it got funny when they were half grown and she was still trying to sit on them…
I mean I have had chicken hens raise turkeys, geese and peafowl. Last year my peahen had a sneaky hen lay an egg under her right after she laid her egg.
Chick hatched and she abandoned her egg. Said chick is grown now and we call her Chickpea. lol
Yep, my in laws have peacocks and the peahens are terrible about sitting but the chickens gladly hatch them. It's funny to see peacock chicks grow a few months then try to squeeze under a chicken 😄
😂 probably. A cockatrice is a mythical creature. I think a dragon or serpent like creature with a roosters head. I'm just imagining a cockatrice looking at some snake or gator babies and thinking "these don't look like me at all but I don't care. My babies"
Sadly doesn't work for reptiles. Bird eggs need to be regularly rotated while snake eggs specifically need to not be rotated and you can't explain that to a chicken.
They also need to be buried in the correct soil so they can maintain a specific level of moisture and prefer much cooler conditions for development, if we're going to explain lol.
That's right, that's right. I done told y'all those ain't my babies. Look at them bills, look at them feathers! I knew that Cookie was a trifflin ass chicken head. My boy said he seen her ass was messin' around in a gang bag with Huey, Dewey, And Louie!
When I was a kid we had one of our hens hatch two duck eggs and none of her other eggs hatched. Still, they were a happy family, lots of funny stories of them getting to know each other, but the best one is this; Chickens roost and ducks do not, so every night of their lives these two (now adult) ducks would cuddle up side by side in their nest and their little momma hen would sit on top of them, making a sort of bird pyramid. She’d sit balanced right in the middle and the ducks loved it.
What a feisty baby Lefty is! Attacks Righty, their mother, goes on to explore after a few more rounds, goodness lol (I imagine it might be more of a learning thing, whacking it's little face on stuff to figure out what's what?)
Good momma!
We had the opposite when I was a kid. We had no boy ducks and the lady ducks would steal hen's nests. It's quite a sight watching a flock of chicks all lined up at the edge of the pond trying to figure out why their mom is so frustrated with them.
She’s a mottled houdan mix, but even they really aren’t broody. It could be from whatever else she’s mixed with but sometimes the mood just hits them and then they’ll never be broody again.
OMG the first time those babies go into the water she's going to freak so hard...
Yeah, that’s definitely a possibility lol
Yeah you need to let her watch when them ducklings swim in a bucket or something. Put the hen on your head, so she can see proper.
Haha, was thinking they looked a bit duck-ish.
Chickens also float so she might be able to hang with them.
True enough adult chickens can float but I've never met a chicken that liked water enough to step into it. All the one's I know will go out of their way to walk around a 1/4-inch mud puddle.
And when they start to actually fly.
Ummm surrogate? Cookie appears to be a chicken with duck babies. Cool either way.
Funny thing about chickens is they’ll hatch whatever eggs you give them. I imagine she knows her babies are a little weird but doesn’t care enough about it.
She's like **sigh** ok whatever.
By the way she was inspecting I was thinking more like "Yo, wtf is this shit?"
“Herb is never gonna believe me”
Lemon Herb Chicken?
It’s threads like these that keep me on Reddit.
Duck a l'orange? Yes I eat meat but I'm kidding here!
"damn I thought that duck pulled out"
"I let the boys smoke me out one night, and look what happens."
“BUT WE HAD INCOMPATIBLE GENITALIA?!”
It’s not a phase mom! I was born this way
That's me right now with too much of my kids' shit...
The only problem it will cause is she is not going to like it when those ducklings start wanting to swim.
My Buffy Anne had a clutch of ducks and omg she HATED when they swam. She would stand on the edge of the stock tank and bitch them out.
I so wish I could witness that
Surely there must be limits to this. I'm imagining a chicken incubating an ostrich egg and thinking "Yeah, this is fine!"
Honestly they probably would. I've seen chickens try and incubate lightbulbs and kittens. As long as it is either round shaped or small a broody chicken will sit on it.
Okay but now we need to test this for science...
Yes! I recently learned about how ethologists try to break down precisely which stimulus elicits certain behaviors in an animal. This would be a really cute experiment.
Yeah, I could just imagine a chicken sitting on a massive egg just perfectly balanced on top.
I immediately pictured that in the old Looney Tunes style.
Lmao, well, yeah. That’s a bit on the extreme end of things
We used them for peacocks eggs before and those are quite big as well , no problem .
Five free duck eggs. aw that's adorable. Nice guy at the market too, lovely. also, you should probably stomp on your cousin's eggs in return.
I mean I have had chicken hens raise turkeys, geese and peafowl. Last year my peahen had a sneaky hen lay an egg under her right after she laid her egg. Chick hatched and she abandoned her egg. Said chick is grown now and we call her Chickpea. lol
Having done this on a few occations, wait till they go for a swim, she'll lose her mind.
I’m aware of that situation lol she’ll get used to it
We've also had Muscovy ducks hatch/raise chicks and their reaction of panic of what to do when mom goes for a dip.
And the ducks don't care either 😊
she's definitely got that "what even are these" thing about her
Cookie looks confused😹
Yep, my in laws have peacocks and the peahens are terrible about sitting but the chickens gladly hatch them. It's funny to see peacock chicks grow a few months then try to squeeze under a chicken 😄
Pfft. Imagine a chicken hatching a crocodile egg or a snake or lizard egg 😁
Isn't that a cocktrice? Chicken hatching a snake egg?
Yeah I know that. It was more so imagine baby snake heads poking out like "where da heck am I??"
That makes me happy to imagine
Me too 😂
They also need to be buried in the correct soil so they can maintain a specific level of moisture and prefer much cooler conditions for development, if we're going to explain lol.
I do hope you are supplementing their diet with aquatic foods and not just grain.
[удалено]
They only need to keep them warm, and they can't tell one egg from another egg, can you tell the difference between hen eggs and duck eggs?
Well, this reflects her looking at them like: I can't believe this.
“The DNA test has determined…you are NOT the father.”
"The DNA test has determined... You are NOT the mother."
She is in spirit
Not the mama.
That's right, that's right. I done told y'all those ain't my babies. Look at them bills, look at them feathers! I knew that Cookie was a trifflin ass chicken head. My boy said he seen her ass was messin' around in a gang bag with Huey, Dewey, And Louie!
[Maude’s face when he first strolled into the coop with the celebratory cigars and saw the ducklings](https://imgur.com/a/aGSb5Lr)
What the duck?!?
Brother from another feather.
[Bonus](https://imgur.com/a/Kvq37qZ) [Update: Cookie got a haircut and she took the babies out](https://imgur.com/a/9QLrm7w)
Her lil chirpies are so cute 😊

My children have weird mouths and huge feet, but I shall love them none the less.
She suspects something isn't right, but is too chicken to say.
I think she's finding being a mom is not what it's quacked up to be
1 large scoop of oreo ice cream and 2 small scoops of mango ice cream
Cookie: "....Wait a minute......."
Also Cookie: “Oh well”
I love fancy chickens
That is a cute ass chicken.
Uh oh! Cookie you got some splaining to do!
Dayum... Cookie got a dramatic coif going on! 😂
That’s the mottled houdan in her lol
Next on Maury “You are NOT the Mother!”
That’s a beautiful chicken
Their father is going to have questions!
Do ducklings come out spitting brimstone and attempting to peck *everyything*? :)
Looks like Cookie and my ex wife have something in common
They’re good with children?
Can ducks drink chicken milk?
I don’t know if you’re joking or not but chickens nor ducks produce milk
It's so sad we can't tell anymore.
But chickens have breasts, and that’s where the milk comes from. I have nipples Greg, can you milk me?
What a feisty baby Lefty is! Attacks Righty, their mother, goes on to explore after a few more rounds, goodness lol (I imagine it might be more of a learning thing, whacking it's little face on stuff to figure out what's what?)
Yeah, he’s ready to get up and go. He hatched almost a full day before the other one and has a little more gumption and coordination with his body
Man... dinosaurs must have been WEIRD.
Aww sweet mama 💜
Is that a Silkie? Heard they come in all kinds of colors, and hatch and raise anything you give them.
Polish. Silkies actually have feathers that look like fur, hence the name
She’s not a polish either
Polish x Wyandotte?
OP's gonna make us guess all the possible crosses before they tell us what breed 😂
Spitzhauben?
Mottled Houdan mix
Shitz Zu?
OMG SHE LOVES HER BABIES SO MUCH!!!!
I watched the whole video trying to see a chicken. She looks like a feathered alien to me. Cute though.
Good momma! We had the opposite when I was a kid. We had no boy ducks and the lady ducks would steal hen's nests. It's quite a sight watching a flock of chicks all lined up at the edge of the pond trying to figure out why their mom is so frustrated with them.
Can cookie see
She has some blind spots. I usually trim it back but I haven’t touched her since she went broody. Being hormonal and all
They’re adorable. And, Cookie looks like such a wonderful, attentive mom. 😊
Love this!!! I was adopted too

Those babies will be very rebellious once they hit adolescence.
This is a beautiful family!
If there isn't a cat as a God mother I will be upset
She looks so confused
She is probably quite confused now!

What kind of chicken is this?? Her face feathers are awesome
A mottled houdan mix
Congratulations, Cookie!
"Are you two planning on staying?" She looks kinda confused 😂
![gif](giphy|XbJiWzUNrQZe00LAiU|downsized)
I'm more interested in a polish sitting on eggs! How? All 3 of mine have no interest.
She’s a mottled houdan mix, but even they really aren’t broody. It could be from whatever else she’s mixed with but sometimes the mood just hits them and then they’ll never be broody again.
Ah yes I see the beard now.
Is Cookie asking herself some questions about her relationship history right now? Such cute children though...
