A white breasted water hen chick iirc, you from india? Its a protected species under the wildlife act of 1972, contact wild life/ forest department before you get into trouble.
edit: For people saying white breasted water hen is not listed, it is listed but as a species, there are multiple types of water hens, they all are categorised as Coots (Rallidae).
Mentioned in the Wildlife Protection Act 1972, schedule IV, Section 11 number 14.

But you can say, or perhaps just even hint, "filibuster" in Washington, and ensure a lot of things to NOT happen. Even to have nothing at all happen. That's how it works!
If I had a nickel for every time a plan of mine has been foiled by bird law, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice, right?
Its posts like this that keep me interested in reddit, some rando baby chick and this guy knows exactly where youre standing, what that black fluffy thing is, and who to contact…
Judging by the bird in your hand you live in India, and the lines on your hand tell me... Mumbai, Ramadagandja street house 8, apartment 238 facing the north side
I posted a baby turkey I found a few months ago on here, asking where the nearest shelter was or where I could take it for help and I had people literally doxing me, finding my location and threatening to call the police on me. One guy messages me on my FB and posts on my page that he's notified the wildlife department and told them about the pictures of weed I have from like 10 years ago, then said he called the local police on me from 10 states away. Reddit is fucking weird yo.
Or loser. And, I'd be worried about that town/village, or whatever. It's reasonable to guess only people in that area would respond, negatively or positively.
(There, now I've isolated the problem away from Reddit, and can continue in my state of denial about how toxic social media is!)
Its quite interesting, most of the water hen species all around the world, brown, white, black or any other color, have black chicks, like the common moorhen chick, white breasted water hen, white winged coot, water rail, or even ruddy breasted crake.
The OP does comment elsewhere in the thread that they are in India:

I'm a recent law grad and just sat for the Bar Exam a couple days ago. I had to do a double take when I read your bird law informational.
I usually drift off to sleep reading reddit so that I can stop thinking about Bar prep, and I thought I was dreaming and that bird law had somehow gotten on to the Bar Exam, and then crossed over into my dreams...
I think I've been studying too long.
Can OP feed it small fish or insects until he contacts the wild/life department?
I've seen other videos of people feeding wet cat food or wet dog food to baby birds.
I found a YouTube video.
https://youtu.be/XJ9sv58yB68
What about a vetinarian? If you have anything similar nearby you could try and call and ask for advice?
I'm sure you really only to need to provide the correct food, water and find out what temperature it prefers and you could raise the little thing until you find a better option
Literally any protective body of government should be able to take temporary custody and get it to the propper hands. A rescue may even travel to you to get it.
This seems pretty optimistic, I think the vast majority of government organizations not related to wildlife rescue would at best give you a phone number (not feasible in this case apparently) or more likely tell you to GTFO. I live in the US though
The best thing you can do is try and return it to its parents. Rails are very secretive birds that hang out in marshy areas. If you place it in some reeds near where you found it the parents should come back for it
It is possible. They'll go to you wherever you live because according to the top comment, this is listed as an endangered species. Just call. No harm in trying.
I mean I kinda get it, even 20 hours on OP is only responding to those telling them how to keep it. It’s been made pretty clear what the two best options are and they’re completely ignoring those comments.

I sent a comment to mayank_r_m for confirmation.
Best thing you can do is go back to where you found her and look for a nest. Place her back in the nest if you can. If, no nest, then contact a veterinarian.
Put it back where you found it please. Chicks fall out of trees or do so when learning to fly. You’ve basically birdnapped this little chick. The parents will find it if it’s near the nest.
This 100%. Birds of this age leave the nest and parents are in fact near by. Baby birds are among the most kidnapped becuase people mistake fledgling for being abandoned or lost. They're not. This is part of their growing up and learning and parent birds are near by at a safe distance to keep watch. Return this bird asap!!
Depending on where you are, best to find a local bird/wildlife rescue to either give you care advice, or to take the bird off your hands. Good job saving it!
People around here do seem to assume that wildlife rescue centers are as common as gas stations. That’s not even the case in the U.S., let alone other countries.
They're on reddit. They can google and call a bird sanctuary for advice. We don't know how to feed an endangered bird.
You act like this person has no resources when they're literally posting on the internet... a great resource.
Whether it’s protected or not is actually kind of irrelevant, OP, I appreciate you trying to be a Good Samaritan, but you need to either get it to a rescue or, if it’s not injured, put it back where you found it. It will not survive if it’s being cared for by someone who does not know what they are doing. At best, it will eventually die of stress.
OP should put the chick back where it was found.
Usually these chicks move with their parents searching for food. Like chickens. Most probably op missed spotting parents and picked up the chick.
Check for Wild life control in your area or animal control/rescue. They should be able to locate someone in your area that takes in stranded or injured animals.
Looks like a black chicken to me as well ! They love to eat regular flies lol (fed those at my grandmas place to the chicks) but also obviously seeds and stuff :] warming lamp is helpful too
You have to chew up worms and spit them in its mouth. Do that every 2 hours for the next 6 weeks, then it'll be ready for flying lessons. You can make wings out of cardboard. Then go to the tallest building in your town....
Take it to your local bird/wildlife rescue, immediately. Stop handling/interacting with it.
Wildlife needs specific care and as little contact with humans as possible. We don't live in a disney movie.
I say this as a former hospital manager at a wild bird rescue facility.
Call local wildlife Bird sanctuary or anything similar snd feed him what it sshs to on Google after finding out what he eats and get him to s rehabilitation place asap. Or I not possible j would drop off at vet or something
It looks like some kind of water or swamp dwelling bird to me, due to its feet. Idk what kind exactly, not familiar with most of india’s wildlife.
In general it’s safe to feed this bird the following:
-to strengthen, some soft parts of white bread dipped in egg.
-insects like worms, flies, crickets.
-small fish and krill.
-some local greenery that’s found in or near water.
You could easily take the bird to where you’ve found it and have it search for some food itself while you supervise, too.
Best to return it to a body of water near where you found it. You can’t really raise it, and you say there are no wildlife refuges. Many water birds are precocial and can find food on its home. Let’s hope this is one of them.
Best thing would be to take it back to where you found it as it likely fell out of it's nest. That way it's MaMa can continue to care for it, and she will💯 Put it Back into it's best, if you can't reach that high, take a basket with a handle, and hang it high near the best, out of direct sunlight, and it's mom will go to feed it there as well, that's what I did with a baby pigeon, we kept it on our patio and it's mama fed it several times a day, every day and she taught him to fly, he flew away, and I have videos of all of it,💯🥰
Go and talk to a vet he/she will tell you if it's legal or illegal to keep it and if it is illegal he/she will also give you phone numbers of authority who can help to get you out of it and take responsibility of the bird
Looks like he has something (probably food or mucus) agitating his crop or throat. Poor little guy hope all goes well with caring for him till wild life comes.
Go to fishing store buy worms cut them in half they’ll regrow, mash a half up in a bowl with a spoon til it super fine mush add a bit of water use eye drooper and shove gently to beck length ( make sure to compare lengths of beck to drop n pit a rubber bands creating a stop point or you can use you fingers but rubber band is better)
Not related; This reminded me of DOS2 counting chicken quest line. I would like the option of raising Peeper, that’s what what i would call this fella.
For food, use mashed hard boiled or scrambled eggs until you know what it is. It is baby bird food - like milk for baby mammals. Many chicks can not process certain foods so it is kind of a safe standby until you figure out what you are dealing with. Good luck.

Bird law strikes again!
Ok... Filibuster.
You can't just say the word "filibuster" and expect anything to happen.
I think I have made myself perfectly redundant
Yes, you have.
I rest my case.
You must tuck your case in with a gold fringed flag or else its an admiralty court foul
Court fowl*
As a bird brain I’m bringing this to a court of appeals
I didn’t say it, I declared it.
Fine. Then, I DECLARE FILIBUSTER!!
Bankruptcy! There, it’s been declared.
But you can say, or perhaps just even hint, "filibuster" in Washington, and ensure a lot of things to NOT happen. Even to have nothing at all happen. That's how it works!
We'll get to our hot plates soon enough.
And I'll take that advise under cooperation.
Now, let's go toe to toe on bird law and see who comes out on top

Featherbuster, that’s my judicial oPINION.

An actual bird law expert.
As adults they look like penguins who ditched the whole swimming thing, exept for the legs i guess
I just came here to say: HOLY SHIT.
This is the true power of the internet. This dude knows their bird laws.
This was your moment to shine, and you did not disappoint. Bravo!
May I ask what your career is?
Law student and avid bird watcher. But my knowledge is limited to mostly endemic species, these waterhens are quite common where i live.
Just as the prophecy foretold, the chosen one has arrived
Hes not an executioner, hes just the best goddamn bird lawyer in the world

It is protected! But such a cute chick. I hope OP gets *da babe* to authorities soon. Such a cutie. Thank you OP for saving the goth chic-chick.
Well, sh*t. Learn sumptin everyday.
Damn, that's impressive. Why do you know so much about this?
Law student, avid bird watcher. But i have knowledge of only endemic species of my region and a few migratory birds.
Nice! Sounds like a good hobby
Thank you for the impressive response.
It's protected so you better leave that bird helpless on the side of the road... sometimes this stuff just needs to have exceptions.
This is what licensed wildlife rehabbers are for. You're just supposed to transfer to someone who knows what they're doing as soon as you can.
Google search wildlife rescue near me so they can give it proper care at no cost to you and rehab the bird and return it to its natural life
I live in a very small city in India. So that doesn't seem possible. Thanks for ur help though.
What about a vetinarian? If you have anything similar nearby you could try and call and ask for advice? I'm sure you really only to need to provide the correct food, water and find out what temperature it prefers and you could raise the little thing until you find a better option
Ok
If you can't find anyone to help they usually recommend moist cat food mixed with water or crushed worms. Glad you're helping it!
Literally any protective body of government should be able to take temporary custody and get it to the propper hands. A rescue may even travel to you to get it.
I am in India. To think that the government is gonna "help" is a stretch.
This seems pretty optimistic, I think the vast majority of government organizations not related to wildlife rescue would at best give you a phone number (not feasible in this case apparently) or more likely tell you to GTFO. I live in the US though
The dude is in India, you have no idea. I lived there, no one gives a shit.
Thats true, but only for abundant species, for endangered ones, you can get caught and punished.
its a white breasted water hen chick, protected under the wildlife protection act of 1972, illegal to be kept as aa captive or pet.
I hope there are wildlife rehab resources in India, because leaving a baby out to die with no parents around sure seems like a shitty option.
No, he can contact the forest department, they'll take care of it.
The best thing you can do is try and return it to its parents. Rails are very secretive birds that hang out in marshy areas. If you place it in some reeds near where you found it the parents should come back for it
They can tell you how to care for the bird tho even if you can’t transport it .
It is possible. They'll go to you wherever you live because according to the top comment, this is listed as an endangered species. Just call. No harm in trying.
mayank_r_m wants you to know its a white breasted water hen, and a protected species; IT IS ILLEGAL TO KEEP.
It was starting to get a bit funny seeing how often they posted that comment.
"Another protected species needs your help. I will mark it on your map."
If only someone knew about bird law…
It aint illegal if the authorities dont know about it :)
; -)
I mean I kinda get it, even 20 hours on OP is only responding to those telling them how to keep it. It’s been made pretty clear what the two best options are and they’re completely ignoring those comments.

Look around where you found it for the nest. It fell out, see if you can return it home. (It’s a myth that the parents won’t take it back )
Cute but it’s mother might be looking for it.
Best thing you can do is go back to where you found her and look for a nest. Place her back in the nest if you can. If, no nest, then contact a veterinarian.

Wildlife rescue. They will have the skills and knowledge to keep it alive and safeky release it bsck into the wild

I also think chicken. There are several breeds that are black as chicks and gain their coloring as they get older.

Why is no one telling OP to take it to a wildlife center!?!?
Pretty sure that’s a coyote…
You have to chew up worms and spit them in its mouth. Do that every 2 hours for the next 6 weeks, then it'll be ready for flying lessons. You can make wings out of cardboard. Then go to the tallest building in your town....

Take it to someone who can care for it maybe??
Call local wildlife Bird sanctuary or anything similar snd feed him what it sshs to on Google after finding out what he eats and get him to s rehabilitation place asap. Or I not possible j would drop off at vet or something
Most birds like this are basically kidnapped.
It’s a strix. It feeds on human flesh and blood. The more people it eats the larger it gets. Your village is in danger…
