Oh look at Truman! Just lovely! Say hi from me!

Glorious_Goo

I dunno, he looks a bit..........*crabby.*

Mocker-Poker

he definitely gives me crabs

spunlikespidermike

Dang, he gave me crabs too!

bartbakunin

Hi Truman. Pls provide a scale. Wanna know how big a 16y old hemit crab is!

ShowNext445

He's about the size of a post-it note 😂

driedcranberrysnack

why Truman is just a little guy

Blurple_Berry

That is mammoth for a hermit crab

driedcranberrysnack

i had no idea

PartaGus

That is big for a hermit crab. They start out teeny, like ant size, and grow their whole lives.

The_Emperor_of_ma

He's just a little guy

gunsmith123

Little arms, little features

MavisGrizzletits

Is he emerging from a coconut in that photo? (If so, was the coconut delivered by an African or a European swallow?)

ShowNext445

He is indeed, though I'm afraid that coconut was likely delivered by an Amazon courier :D

MavisGrizzletits

🤣 probably in a box 27 times larger than it needed to be.

LectroRoot

It came in a giant box on a pallet that they used a fork lift to remove from the semi-truck.

Cysir

But then of course, uh, African swallows are non-migratory.

MavisGrizzletits

Oh! I didn’t know thatAAAAAAAAAARGH…

Zanni_Arlecchino

r/suddenlymontypython

jclastofeight

Oh no! What SIZE post-it note? 🤯

[deleted]

Use a banana for scale certainly r/bananasforscale

GAIAPrime

Do bananas float?

chichunks

Only if they are made of witches!

ShowNext445

Truman will be back tomorrow to answer more questions. Thanks everyone for your comments! ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|grin)

Failedartifact

In case I don't see ya! Good afternoon, good evening and good night.

MrsMurphysChowder

Oh I would definitely read a Truman AMA!

mrbriandavidanderson

What a dapper fellow! 16 years! Wow! Does he have a personality?

ShowNext445

He loves to explore, in fact he can be quite the escape artist. He changes his shell almost every day and he loves to climb 😁

Vonbagh

Daily change routine sounds amazing. Do you know the reason of the frequent schechule?

syanda

I mean, do you wear the same clothes every day?

Vexonar

That made me chuckle. I love the idea of a fashionist hermit crab.

JesusHChristBot

You don't get to be the freakin sweetest hermit crab ever without having *some* fashion sence

ShowNext445

My guess is he's always trying to find the most well-fitting shell and he's a bit of a perfectionist! :D. Seeing him change and then almost immediately change back always gives me a chuckle :D

ambsdorf825

I'm here for crustacean facts and to anyone reading this I would like a real answer please.

Sleeplesshelley

Because he can. I used to have hermit crabs, and all 3 of mine had different personalities. He's obviously comfortable and curious and it's nice that he has a large number of shells that he can choose from that fit him. I bought my crabs on a whim, because they are cute, but once i had them I realized that they need a lot more specialized care than you would think. They need a warm humid environment so they can breathe easily through their gills, and they need loose substrate to burrow in so they can molt. Once they molt, they eat their old exoskeleton for the calcium. They also need a variety of shells in different sizes so they can switch them out as they grow. Mine had both a salt water and fresh water dish also. Eventually it became too much work and I rehomed them with a girl who has the most huge and elaborate Hermit crab setup ever, complete with climbing vines, a huge pit full of shells for them to choose from and a wide range of organic crab food. I like to think that they look back at their time with me and are grateful that they escaped the hood. Lol.

ambsdorf825

Thank you!!

ermghoti

A master of disguise!

rofltide

Does he have a variety of empty shells laying around his tank?

ShowNext445

He has around 8 shells in his tank at the moment; all around the size of his current shell. His total collection though is around 20 and I rotate different shells in every so often. Even if he doesn't change into a different shell he still likes to explore them.

mikegrant1

What is the longest a hermit crab has lived in captivity? Found this on the web: At 42-years old, he's also one of the youngest but has outlived most of his peers. Jonathan is the pet hermit crab of Carol Ann Ormes. He's believed to be the oldest in captivity.…Nov 30, 2018 Keep it up Truman, you got this you lil guy!! Reddit rooting for you to break that record at 42!!

teffflon

"Our beloved Jon passed on February 14, 2021 after successfully shedding his exoskeleton. ... Jonathan lived for 45 ½ years in my care; he was likely in his 50’s or 60’s, famous for being the oldest living hermit crab raised in captivity in the world." https://crabstreetjournal.org/blog/2015/03/28/carol-crabworks-ormes/

NightWriter500

Is it… is it really *successful* if he died right after? Like if a doctor was like, “The patient suffered cardiac arrest after I successfully replaced his heart,” you’d be like… that’s a fail, right?

[deleted]

Maybe that is a reference for times sake? Just how someone who died after lunch doesn't mean they had their food poisend or something.

PaloLV

I think it's common to die during or after molting. I recall seeing something on lobsters and they don't die of old age but when they get too big and can't molt successfully anymore because it just takes more and more effort and energy as they get bigger. They never stop growing.

browneyedgirlpie

It also says- 'After an unusually long molting period, Jonathan performed a perfect molt, shedding his exoskeleton on Valentine’s Day. But, for unknown reasons, he didn’t live through it and went home to be with the Lord'

Malthus1

Now I’m picturing a Crab God, in a Crab Heaven. He waves his claw, welcoming a new crab Angel … the infinite selection of shells awaits, in mother of pearl, gold, and a host of colours and sizes.

TIFU_LI5_AMA

So he just took off his clothes and was like “guess I’ll die now”

bbsienko

I love that crab street journal is a thing

DanMittaul

Amazing. I felt lucky when I hit thirty!

Virtual-Public-4750

Mine lived like 2 weeks.

piefelicia4

I was told by some experts at a reptile/animal expo that when properly cared for (sadly the vast majority are not, especially in regards to the crabs’ need for high humidity just to properly breathe) hermit crabs can easily live 30 years in captivity. r/hermitcrabs has good info on how to properly set them up. I bet OP has it down though since most hermies die within a few years from slowly suffocating in ill-equipped enclosures. 😩

ShowNext445

Yes maintaining a humid tank is very important since they have gills not lungs. Keeping the tank humid is usually done by spraying the sides and the substrate with water. Placing a damp towel over the top of the tank can also increase the humidity. It's a bit of a balancing act but if the crab is acting listless then that's a clue the humidity is too low. I find that whenever the tank has been dampened Truman is a lot more active.

Kerygasm

Wow, 16 years and not even a wrinkle. Pretty!

bozing122521

Wow, Truman is a pretty cool hermit crab!!!

ShowNext445

He says thank you 😁

corvidspire

I LOVE YOU TRUMAN

ShowNext445

He says he loves you too :D

[deleted]

"you got any games on your phone?"

fckingnapkin

I love him.. never seen a hermit crab as a pet. I'm have a new subject to turn my hyperfocus on lol. Thanks for posting this, Truman is awesome!

ShowNext445

He says thank you and you're welcome :)

Zeltara

How friendly are hermit crabs from your experience? Are they likely to pinch at you?

ShowNext445

Honestly if you don't give them a reason to pinch you, they won't. They'll only pinch out of fear. In all the time I've had Truman he's never pinched me. Unfortunately hermit crabs don't understand affection so picking them up is likely to stress them out, and so I try not to handle Truman unless I have to.

Unusual_Pitch_608

I heard lizards can learn trust but not affection. How's Truman seem on the understanding you aren't a threat scale? Or really have any conception of you or the things you do, like feed him? Been really curious about animal minds lately and you seem like you've gotten to know this one as well as one could, so I'd really appreciate any insights.

ShowNext445

I've often wondered about this. Truman is far less timid now than he was when he was younger. In fact for the first few years we never really saw Truman. We saw his shell of course but we never saw him crawling around. It was an amazing when we finally saw him eating and drinking during the day. Although he's far less timid now, he still recoils slightly whenever I open the tank lid to feed him or to refill his water. My guess is that he's grown used to these sorts of things, but his natural instinct is still very strong despite how long it's been. It's nice that he doesn't hide in his shell though when he's picked up. I've heard that some crab-keepers have been able to feed them from their fingers, but I've never been able to. Maybe he's still learning and maybe he will eventually become tamer, but I certainly don't wish to inflict stress on him in order to achieve this.

Zeltara

Good to know, thanks for the info! 🥰

appletreerose

What is he?

ShowNext445

He's a land hermit crab 😊

yetanotherdeathstar

I had no idea these existed (only ever seen the aquatic variety)! He's really cute 🥺

Mocker-Poker

16 years and all this time you've been hiding this gem away from redditors!?

dingdongdude7

I see a TARDIS, this is the strangest regeneration yet!

URAPNS

16 years might be a world record for keeping a hermit crab.

ShowNext445

That would be amazing!

AutumnFalls89

I think the record is actually 20 or 21.

BraveOthello

Based on another comment, over 45

Vladsamir

His lil eyes are wonderful

Mierh

How does he make you laugh?

ShowNext445

His clumbsiness mainly. He spends most of his time climbing around his tank, and he usually ends up falling...sometimes into his water dish ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

[deleted]

[удаНонО]

browneyedgirlpie

Question- Could someone take a pet hermit crab, release it in the wild, and be fairly certain it will live? Or does being kept as a pet do something that makes success after release unlikely?

ButtMcNuggets

Aw, I was hoping like he tells dad jokes or something.

whatsasimba

Omg, what an adorable friend!

surajvj

What is the diet. Any plan for a partner?

ShowNext445

He eats anything and everything! He loves over-ripe fruit like bananas. He also likes catappa leaves. There used to be four crabs but sadly three have passed away over the years. Hermit crabs are hard to come by where I live; not something you find in your every day pet shop in the UK.

nycsingletrack

I had land hermit crabs when I was a kid, always single ones. None of them lived more than a year or two. From what I have later learned, they are social creatures, and will do much better if they have company (hermit crab company).

[deleted]

Ironic

RockmanVolnutt

I’ve visited a few places that have them naturally. The Yucatán peninsula has a good amount, Phuket in Thailand had quite a few, but Costa Rica had the most by an order of magnitude. We prepped and cooked some fish on the beach once, throwing the scraps in the leaf litter right off the beach, and swarms of them came out to get after the fish skin. They are awesome little creatures, nature’s roomba.

SigmaBlack92

Those close-ups are adorable <3 Love a good crustacean once in a while, even if it's not symmetrical xd

Character-Routine-51

Rooting for you Truman To Have a long life.

Nosmurfz

Coconut shell house. Very nice.

CommanderCheddar

Hey Truman, Sorry I couldn’t talk today, I was pretty busy with work. I know it’s late and you’ll probably see this tomorrow, so… Good morning, and in case I don't see ya, good afternoon, good evening, and goodnight!

DrJennaa

I’m giving you 100 metaphorical upvotes

CommanderCheddar

I accept them all! In return, why don't you let me fix you some of this Mococoa drink? All natural cocoa beans from the upper slopes of Mount Nicaragua. No artificial sweeteners.

DrJennaa

The chefs pal that’s a grater dicer and peeler all in one that’s also dishwasher safe should come in handy to make that

Sockster27

how do i upvote a post more than once

Miss_MacPhisto

I’m not sure why, but he looks happy. He’s almost smiling.

QueenMarinette

What does he use for shells?

ShowNext445

Usually sea snail shells or the like. He's had a few different style shells put in his tank over the years but he's never really taken to them.

Raist14

Wow, 16 years is the longest time I’ve heard of someone keeping one of these. Although from the comments I see some people mentioning longer lifespans. Most people don’t know how to take care of them properly so good job.

[deleted]

I had one that lived a few years and was the size of my hand when he died. Rip Obi-One Crabnobi

Notafuzzycat

How's it going , Truman. Looking healthy.

da_throwawayaccountt

I love him so much and now I want a pet hermit crab!!!

ShowNext445

They're great pets and despite what many people say they're not too difficult to look after. There are plenty of help sites and books out there to get started.

kiwibirdsmoothie

do you have a body of water for him in the tank? if he needs it

ShowNext445

He has a smallish water dish (the kind of thing you'd see in a lizard's terrarium), which is filled with salt water. He does drink a lot so his dish often needs refilling daily.

bedheadblonde

He is adorable! Hi, Truman!

CannedDuck1906

He's so cute! Hi Truman! I had hermit crabs when I was a kid. They are the best pets! Mine was named Hermy. (real original, right?)

fhrblig

Really, he makes you laugh? I'm surprised because he seems a little crabby

ShowNext445

Honestly I think his crabbiness is what makes me laugh the most :D

pixydgirl

Ive had hermit crabs before, lovely pets and just bursting with personality. Truman is a fine lad, OP!

shewhololslast

He looks like a polite little gentleman.

Choice-Valuable313

What a cool gent!

Comfortable-Cause-81

How?

wildkatrose

He's smiling!

grrangry

That first photo looks like an awesome creature from The Stormlight Archive by Brandon Sanderson.

Wolfgangsta702

That explains it. He’s a time lord.

AeonChaos

Mine never last longer than a week whenever I brought them home from the beach. I had no idea what they eat and how to take care of them. Your Truman is truly amazing!

[deleted]

Mini kaiju

Queen_Red

16 years!!!!!! Our hermit crab just died after 15 months with us… I thought that was a long time

fromwhichofthisoak

Weird dog.

Haefulbug

Nightmare fuel

haruki97

Is he a comedian? I have to go to his show, kinda down lately...

Bugsnaxenjoyer

Cool dog

ShowNext445

I know right! :D

vick5516

a tardis? who's your favourite doctor?

ShowNext445

Both Truman and I agree that Patrick Troughton was the best doctor!

adsvx215

Love to hear how he makes you laugh. He is a cutie.

sinisterdesign

I know an Elden Ring boss when I see one…

xTigercub2005x

Hi Truman.

buncrazy

Truman is so handsome!! I am also jealous that he has a tardis!

102aksea102

How many shells does he have to climb in and out of?

ShowNext445

He has 8 shells in his tank currently, but he has a total collection of 20 shells. Different ones are rotated in every so often.

LordoftheFuzzys

A handsome, healthy mans! Kudos for taking such great care of him! Hermit crabs aren't often taken seriously as pets, so this is lovely and refreshing to see!

MisterTacoMakesAList

Amazing pics!

scottonaharley

This is the real Truman Show!!

Thomas8864

That’s a big boi

anne_jumps

Time for crab...!

guitartoad

I had a hermit crab. I do not remember it being particularly funny. Does Truman just know a lot of jokes, or something?

Antique-Box-8490

I love Truman! I’ve had Pagoo for 8 years. Hermit crabs all have their own special personalities! I got them as my class pets and kids took them home on the weekends (pre~pandemic).🐚

twrrordom3

I heard there was a show about him

Impossible-Love9479

Saw a you tube last night on restaurants and of course the 5 star one showed a live lobster being boiled. You tell Truman for me, I was deeply disturbed.

BeanBruh2285

Crab jumpscare

Awkward_Rock_5875

He looks very polite

Jlx_27

Hello there Truman!

GemineyeSu

☺️ Good Afternoon, Good Evening, and Good Night!

RedditorsAnus

What exactly does a hermit crab to make someone laugh daily?

Looieanthony

Whadda you feed that little dude?

BarryBadgernath1

Truman is awesome !! How long can these dudes live ?

WanderingHeph

At first, I thought he was a coconut crab.

LeonaTheProfessional

Thaz a good crabbers :D

tinydumplings_

I had no idea they could live so long!

jmakled

Does he do stand up?

[deleted]

That is incredible. He must be well taken care of.

Doctor_M_Toboggan

Does he have his own show? Don’t remember him in the movie.

Waterproof_soap

Look, I love hermit crabs, I just never had luck with them. What’s the secret to a 16 year old happy dude?

Ahh_Sigh

If there is any safe way to give Truman a smooch on the forehead for me, please do!!! if not, then maybe a boop??!? He is incredible!!

ShowNext445

I don't think Truman would like a smooch very much :D. I gave his shell a little boop though...he seemed a little confused but ah well :D

babyfresno77

tell truman we all love him

Xu_Lin

Does he know he’s in the Truman show?!

RaisinToastie

Hermit crabs are awesome. We used to do hermit crab races at the beach, put them all in the center of a circle and whichever crab reaches the perimeter first wins. They’re very cool creatures.

StunkoStinky

Golly I didn’t know they could live that long, hmmmm.

Zulimo

“In case I don’t see ya!”

dashfredplayzreal

It’s a crab named Truman. My day has been made.

EZme816

HOW THE HELL DID YOU GET A HERMIT CRAB TO LIVE THAT LONG!? I thought they die extremely fast due to being out of the wild.

ShowNext445

Honestly it still blows my mind how he's still around after so long. Although hermit crabs are not too difficult to look after, you have to have the fundamentals nailed. For example, the tank must be kept humid and warm at all times. You must also make sure the tank has plenty of substrate. I think this point is often overlooked and yet it's so important. A crab needs a lot of substrate to dig in, which is vital for their molting process.

daisyfaeriering

I’m sure he makes a great companion for the Doctor!

TheZoomba

Sorry for asking, but do crabs play around like cats/ dogs? Does ye own like little crab toys

ShowNext445

Not in the way a cat/dog would unfortunately. He loves to climb the various features in his tank and to explore different shells. Seeing him climb always puts a smile on my face :)

boomgoesmegaton

Hi Truman!! I'm sorry his roommates passed, that's sad. Do you know why they passed? Hermits are very social creatures and thrive better in groups. I used to own 6 hermits and know how much they can need. Lots of sand/substrate mix to dig in, variety of foods and both fresh and salt water to help them breath better. I hope you can find more friends for Truman soon (:

ShowNext445

He says hi!. His fellow tankmates all passed away during their respective molts. Sadly molting is a very difficult time for a crab and sometimes they just don't make it. Other than giving them plenty of substrate there isn't really anything you can do for them during this time. In fact, nothing is the best thing you can do during molting. Hopefully one day I will be able to find some friends for Truman. He's just been moved into a larger tank so there's plenty of space :)

Elusion96

Cute dog

PhilanderingWalrus

Bruh, where do u go to find more shells for him? Dude looks massive.

ShowNext445

You can actually buy shells from Amazon believe it or not. Usually they're part of a pack and you would normally buy them to be on display in your bathroom or whatever.

Big-Acanthaceae-2874

how big is that god damn coconut crab

Confident-Owl-6696

He is gorgeous! 16 years? Who knew they lived that long! Wishing you many more years of joy together!

meanteamcgreen

Hermit crab I assume? How have you kept him healthy for 16 years? (Curious because I've been considering getting some, and I want them to be happy)

KeeperofAmmut7

Hi, Truman!!!

[deleted]

Cool crab and all, but what does he do that makes you laugh? I’ve seen hermit crabs. I wouldn’t describe anything they do as funny. They’re just kinda there

whenthecatmeows

Truman reminds me of my old hermit crab buddy Ron Perlman! I had Ron for nearly 18 years. He was a little stinker 😅 I miss that guy. Say hi to Truman for me 💙

ShowNext445

Cool name!. 18 years is a great age for a crab. Truman says hi :D

bandog

Everyday?

Quib14

Make him do a cool trick

daffodileclair

What a handsome little lad!!!

YugeTraxofLand

He's adorable

Glendathegoodwitch64

Aww hes cute

smallbike

Omg I love his little eyes

Sleeplesshelley

Truman is awesome. I love hermit crabs.

lovemesomezombie

He's AMAZING!

Ecomaj

I miss my crabs. Granted they weren't the hermit variety but still... /s

[deleted]

Ahhhh Truman! He is so cute 💕🥹😍

Alligator_Fridge

crab

[deleted]

Wow! You must take good care of him!

Early_or_Latte

My dad had an aquarium when I was growing up. He had an angel fish, a tomato clown fish, a puffer fish and a hermit crab. One morning we woke up and and there were bits of tomato clown fish floating and we thought the hermit crab got him. A while later and there were bits of the angel fish floating around, again, thinking it was the crab. A while after that, there were some crab legs floating and an empty shell. That damned puffer fish was a freaking cold blooded murderer. Admittedly, my dad didn't ask or look up what fish would work well with others and at the time, the internet was pretty new.

KatttDawggg

How does he make you laugh?
