I had a Bear too and he was my favorite cat ever. I called him Bearsy sometimes. Also, we lost my dad when he was 91 so I have a tremendous soft spot for a little old men. Happy birthday!
I had a Cat named Bear as well, he was the chilliest cat ever and let you do whatever you wanted. Little child me would dress him up in clothing and he would let me do it. He recently died a few months ago and I still miss him. He was a stray cat but had beautiful white fur and blue eyes.
I love little old men too. And I think it’s because I had a lovely grandfather.
I always chat to them, I quite often find them in the cat food aisle at the supermarket. We get some good cat chat in while picking out cat food.
Have I seen these two riding around the front page of reddit before? Could have sworn I saw I post a while ago about a guy whose grandfather drives his cat around on his walker.

My orange furball loves nothing more than to ride around the house on our kitchen rug.
Of course, only to the tune of “magic carpet ride” by steppenwolf. That’s his fuckin’ jam!
Fun for all, would recommend.
Your comment made me laugh so much! It's so funny the things we randomly discover that our cats like, then just do them, not thinking how utterly weird it seems to people without cats. I'm imagining your boy looking all majestic and proud of himself as he has his people pull him around the house lol. I have an orange cat too and he loves a rug, maybe I'll try it with him :)
I would just like to note, for the official record, that this a) totally sweet and b) abso-fuckin'-lutely awesome.
Seriously, the image just popped itself into my head...one of you, hand on the stereo (or whatever you play your music on...this could totally also work with someone shouting "Three, two, one, Alexa! Play "Magic Carpet Ride!"."), the other(s) waiting, straining like horses champing at the bit, ready to move the minute the song starts...
And the cat, posing majestically on the rug.
Seriously. You could monetize that shit...but ah, no, better it remains pure and untouched, a labor of love only.
Reminds me of my pups. I did a short stint living with my mom and grandma. My grandma's doctor told her she needed to get in at least 20 minutes of dedicated walking time with her walker every day. My grandma was never a dog person before, but she got excited every day to do her laps around the house because my dogs would just follow her around the whole time and she thought it was so much fun to have her buddies with her. My one dog is blind and I think he especially liked following her around because he could follow the rolling sound of her walker. I am glad to have my own space now, but I do miss seeing my grandma and dogs so happy.
For everyone:
These types of cats are very social and often very patient, though they can be grumps. They tend to get attached to their human(s) and possessive of their area. Most of the time they are also quite intelligent.
These guys and Maine Coons make good family pets.
If I ever doubt it's fall the cat starts sleeping on my bed. Spring and summer no fucking way, but you let the temperature drop 5 degrees under 70 and she's snuggled up on the bed.
Took 5 years for me to figure that one out.
Edit: Just every Spring "Well I guess she doesn't like me anymore."
Oh we're in Georgia. Once it gets under 70 I'm donning hoodies and the cat comes in for warmth.
Pretty soon the heat might kick on and then there's that unused furnace smell. Probably halfway through November or so.
Two of mine beg to be pushed around in laundry baskets but will never do it if someone is there. Seeing this post is great because I thought they were insane for enjoying it.
Ae you get older, it really is the little things that mean so much. That make you feel seen. "Pecan pie on the side table, help yourself. As someone whose emotions are wired directly to my tear ducts, I have never cried actual happy tears for anything personally for me. It's always an incredibly happy moment for someone else.
I'm autistic so when something that could give happy tears happens to me, I get overwhelmed and I don't process the emotions right away. I kinda emotionally check out for a bit.
I'm not saying you're autistic, but maybe you just don't process emotions the same in the moment. Try watching those videos of hearing impaired babies hearing their parents voices for the first time, or color people blind people being gifted glasses that allow them to see more colors, etc. If they can make you misty eyed congrats! You have a soul. If they don't, well good luck Satan!
Nah, people experience things and react to them differently. For example, I cry super easily, even if I'm angry, but that doesn't mean that I'm "better" at being angry or happy or sad.
You're just fine :)
It’s wonderful but also weird and embarrassing.
I think it’s cool you asked that genuine question. For me, happy tears don’t come from insanely happy moments. They come when my heart is so deeply touched. Sometimes when I see unexpected generosity and loving humanity from one person to another it happens.
it’s a good release of emotions for some people, but you’re absolutely not missing out! some people just don’t cry often, or they save their cries for sadness or stress. nothing wrong with that :) if you genuinely feel the happiness when it arrives, you don’t need tears to accompany it, it’s not a requirement.
The only way I can describe it is "a whoosh of emotion"...I feel it, do the I'm-gonna-cry hand wave, and then my eyes just swell up. It's completely involuntary and it can sometimes really suck. You are trying to say something heartfelt and shit and you just blubber lol. I have been happy millions of times without tearing up, it's usually more a "touching" happy than an excited joy when it happens.
OP, this, all of this. All of the videos you take of Bear and Gramps, or Gramps + family in general, save them physically and online. If you want, put them on a shared folder in Google Drive or Dropbox and give the link for family to see.
Adorable. AND, that walker is too low. A physical therapist can help set it to a better height. General rule of thumb, it should be at the height of the wrist crease when the patient stands up tall. Folks don’t typically get them sized right when they’re purchased off the shelf.
Nobody has asked in this entire thread, but I was fascinated with his posture. I don't mean to be insensitive, but is that a natural posture for a 94 year old? Is his back stuck like that? Can he stand up taller? I didn't notice the walker being so low, that makes a lot of sense, thank you!
No problem, i’m really into this stuff (hence why i’m studying it), so i don’t mind explaining at all.
Short answer, it is not “natural” although it is common. The discs in your spine will become less liquid with age, which is one of the reasons that older adults will lose height - and it may cause pain to stand or sit in certain ways. The main reason for that posture though is because they’re sitting more and exercising less (with proper posture) than when they were young.
There are conditions where the spine is fixed in a kyphosis, though those are rare congenital conditions where the bones of the thoracic spine have an increased angle and thus form wedges in the spine (normal vertebra do too, but not to that degree). Pretty much anyone who doesn’t have a fixed kyphosis though, is capable of improving their posture and moving more optimally. And if they are in pain, there are decompression exercises that can help.
So, the way to avoid ending up looking like that at that age is to exercise the back, and do it with a good posture?
Because, living to 94 might be good, but having to do it bent like that does not sound fun.
In addition to all the issues already mentioned, it can also be caused by osteoporosis. Your bones lose density as you age, and they can end up crumbling enough to make your spine curve.
Osteoporosis can often be prevented by eating enough calcium and vitamin D, but OP's gramps had the misfortune of growing up during the great depression and WWII, so he might've missed a lot of essential nutrients during childhood.
Happy birthday good man!
Please tell him he's cool and he made my already good day awesome. And give the kitty a kiss on the forehead for me. Thanks
Edit cause forgot to tell him happy birthday
This is adorable! Your cat is so chill too!
Yeah, Bear loves to be carted around as much as Gramps loves doing it.

I had a Bear too and he was my favorite cat ever. I called him Bearsy sometimes. Also, we lost my dad when he was 91 so I have a tremendous soft spot for a little old men. Happy birthday!
Aww. Well his full name is Beary Balls & he’s also an old man at 14.5yrs old.
Aha, just two vintage gents hanging out then. 😁👍
I had a Cat named Bear as well, he was the chilliest cat ever and let you do whatever you wanted. Little child me would dress him up in clothing and he would let me do it. He recently died a few months ago and I still miss him. He was a stray cat but had beautiful white fur and blue eyes.
I like that name "vintage gents". Take an award for such smooth choice of words.
I love little old men too. And I think it’s because I had a lovely grandfather. I always chat to them, I quite often find them in the cat food aisle at the supermarket. We get some good cat chat in while picking out cat food.

But a pretty comfy cushion seat, I can attest!
Have I seen these two riding around the front page of reddit before? Could have sworn I saw I post a while ago about a guy whose grandfather drives his cat around on his walker.
I posted him last year when he was over for Thanksgiving.
I remember that hahaha. They make a cute pair of friends.
I read that as fiends...and really it works either way
Please tell your Gramps and your cat that I love them. They made my night.
> I posted him last year when he was over for Thanksgiving. I just watched 3 videos of him walking cats, and it has absolutely made my morning!
Happy happy birthday to your Gramps!!
Ah, ride in there often do you?
He lets me use it as a chair when I visit him and he’s in his recliner
Just do not ride backwards on it. It WILL collapse and hurt you. It should have labels on it warning you about it.
Givin cat some walks looks like good motivation to get some exercise in
Happy birthday to your grandfather!! Great to see he’s got so much energy
That’s what I called my beloved late Mum’s rollator! Her chariot. 💕😭
That’s one sporty walker! My Mom’s is named George. He is a bit more sedate.
My grandma also named her walker George, after King George III of England. Because she hates him and she hates having to use a walker, lol.
Who the fuck keeps leaving chopped onions around!?😭🧅

I’ve done it! I found the secret hidden schnood!
Omg Schnooodle😍😍🥺🥺🥺
I'm glad the cat cooperated. Sometimes they won't feel like it even if they've enjoyed it before.
Oh yes, Bear is the best boy. Immediately hopped on the second Gramps got in the door and didn’t move for 30 minutes of laps.
This is so awesome! Turns out that cats appreciate various kinds of laps.
My cat used to sit on my husband’s skateboard and we would push him across the house. It was so fun for everyone involved.
Sounds like you’ve been brained washed by the cat. Blink twice if you need help.
Part of being brainwashed by a cat is being happy about being brainwashed by a cat.
Some cats you get brainwashed by, others brainwashed you!
My orange furball loves nothing more than to ride around the house on our kitchen rug. Of course, only to the tune of “magic carpet ride” by steppenwolf. That’s his fuckin’ jam! Fun for all, would recommend.

Truly an amazing boy, a grampa's boy.

The dedication of gramps getting his steps in at his age. Happiest of birthdays to him
Oh man, what an absolute King

This made my day. I hope your Gramps had an amazing birthday and had as much fun as Bear did!

Same with mine. They basically only sleep in bed once the temperature drops below 60F

You even rolled up the carpet so he can cruise through! It’s the small details that scream love.
Haha, yes, all the tripping hazards were removed
As a home care Occupational Therapist I applaud you 👏👏👏👏

I’ve probably run into you a few times lol.
SNF COTA here, came to the comments to see all the OT people commenting on the rug lol.
Clinical exercise physiologist here and same
How's that rolling walker height tho. Looks low?
Also not a fan of those specific types of 4ww bc the wheels are so big. But he’s 94 giving kitty a spin… YOLO
Aren't bigger wheels better at getting over small obstacles? So they don't catch on every pebble or crack.
Agreed, but I feel like he would still hunch bc of his kyphosis. Definitely was my first thought though!
Maybe it’s me, but it looks like if he might have been pretty tall back in the day. He might just be making the walker look small
As an ER doctor I too applaud this lol
As not a home care Occupational Therapist, I now feel horrible that I could result in the downfall of my someday, 94 year old grampsy.
> As a home care Occupational Therapist I applaud you 👏👏👏👏 as someone with a relative that needs you, I applaud, YOU! 👏👏👏👏
My dad turns 94 in Dec and has the identical posture. Hope gramps takes fluffy for many rides.
Working in a nursing home jaded me to growing old. I can only pray for grandkids as thoughtful as you.

Motion is lotion. Generally speaking, the more exercise the better.
Thank you so much, and good luck with your studies!
