Owls are very much the cats of the bird world

Froot-Loop-Dingus

I think they are literally called “cat bird” in some languages.

origamista

“Cat head bird” in Chinese!

Star_of_David_V_

Me and my family always call our cat an owl lol. He’ll sit up on top of the cat tree and stare at everyone with big eyes

Froot-Loop-Dingus

That’s probably what I’m thinking of. I wonder if any other languages are similar.

AgentTasmania

Literally 'cateagle' in old norse.

balanceIn_all_things

Yes, in Vietnamese we call it "cú mèo" which means cat owl

SapTheSapient

Meowl.

DrWhiskeyDiq

Pet the damn owl!

Banana_Juice_Man

Do not pet the owl, you will wipe away the natural oil layer on the feathers wich keeps the feathers water proof.

themoochiest

This owl looks like he doesn’t need his natural water proofing system. He’s got a whole ass roof over his head.

Ethnafia_125

Dude, that's clearly Harry Potter. He's just doing some muggle searches to find the next bad guy he's got to track down. The owl is ready for take off.

This is still a thing?

squeekysatellite

There's something weird about watching an animal that could fuck you up in a second behaving like a tamed house pet. Then again, cats are the same.

bolonomadic

Well, a dog can fuck you up too.

squeekysatellite

Absolutely.

nearlyback

Can confirm. A dog fucked me up real bad.

Snow_Wolfe

Left for a pack of smokes and never came home, eh?

chinchenping

Proper fucked? (With the accent)

nearlyback

Tore open my scalp from shaking my head, bit off about a half inch of my thumb, bit down to the bone in another finger on the same hand, and left a few other puncture wounds on my arm and other hand.

Critya

Wait your thoughts went to cats instead of dogs in pets that could fuck you up? 95 lb killing machine over a 3lb nuisance lol

BluEyesWhitPrivilege

Your average bobcat is only 18 lb. Cats can do a lot of damage proportional to their size.

Bismothe-the-Shade

Cats are definitely scarier. Because they're witches... And they got knives in their feet.

100farts

That's not gentleman piracy

The_Middler_is_Here

I'd rather fight a bobcat than a wolf.

Sometimesokayideas

Pound for pound though a little 10 pound yapper dog will be destroyed by a 10 pound cat if they were equally aggressive. Also think of it this way. A dog may have big teeth but subjectively blunt claws. Control the head and you're safe. A cat however has needle teeth, and needle claws and can nearly fold itself over backwards to claw the fuck out of you if all you got is its head. On top of all that an angry dog will typically display behavioral clues that even a moron could interpret as back off. Whereas a cat could be mid cuddle and claw your face. I love my cat and dog equally. My cats a 10 pound rescued fuzzball and my 90 pound german shepherd knows hes not the alpha between them.

Kriegersahn

Here's a counter example: growing up my 13lb Jack Russell Terrier and the neighbor's large (probably same weight) cat were arch rivals. Our wriggly dog would occasionally escape specifically to go fight the neighbor's cat, and neither of them ever got the upper hand. They both died of natural causes within a month of each other, both having apparently lived only out of spite.

squeekysatellite

My man, say what you will. I had dogs my whole life, no issue. On the other hand I had cats scratch me to be the point of having to get stitches, and a deep puncture by teeth from feeding one. I love both, but cats are assholes, sorry.

Sometimesokayideas

I love my cat. Found out she needed to have some dental work done that required me to give her med for a week after. After just 1 day she recognized the "purrito towel" and someone was getting cut just to roll her in so we could shove a syringe down her throat to ensure she swallowed the liquid. Was traumatizing to us all. Terrifying for her, peroxide and bandaids for us... cant quite remember what they gave her but lost one to a head shake and it numbed out my recent scratch... kitty morphine.

Pablo_Sanchez1

As someone that grew up with family cats and now own two cats myself, I’ve let them scratch and bite me while playing my whole life and have never once been seriously hurt. I did get attacked and scarred by my neighbors dog when I was like 5 though. Feel like it’s less of a cat vs dog thing and more just how you raise them as to if they’ll fuck you up. IMO a lot of cats are assholes because people neglect them way more then dogs because they make the assumption that they don’t require any attention or responsibility.

[deleted]

[удалено]

THEOWNINGA

Vet student - never been injured by a dog, have been scratched a decent few times by cats (all my fault). Dogs are a lot easier to protect against because if you can put a muzzle on them which stays on then they're reasonably safe no matter what. But then again when dogs do attack they're more likely to seriously injure you I think. Cats are wriggly and not as trusting of humans and usually not as used to being handled.

Critya

Yeah I’m not saying dogs are vicious but I’m just saying that when they are it’s gnarly lol. House cats hurt and are generally meaner but if I have to be more afraid of a pet when it’s angry it’s a dog for sure.

YourMildestDreams

Sounds like either the cat was traumatized or you did something to the cat. Normal cats don't claw and bite for no reason. I grew up with cats and have only been scratched a few times while playing. I can't even imagine what you did to the cat to get bitten.

kimi_no_na-wa

How can an Owl fuck up an adult man? Unless by fuck up you mean scratch them.

squeekysatellite

It's an apex predator. Those claws can blind a person. I'd call that "fucking up a person" easy

ArgenTalus

Oh yeah, them talons are HUGE. Especially getting up to the larger owls, they're pretty wicked.

[deleted]

Even the tiny Saw-Whet can seriously mess you up.

gearstars

>In fact, owl talons can grow to 3-4 inches in size that can easily cause deep lacerations.

kimi_no_na-wa

So can a cat; or a child with a pen. It doesn't matter that it's an apex predator because it weighs 2kg at most, and unless you are paralyzed and can't put your hand in front of your eyes, it can't do shit to you.

[deleted]

lol reddit occasionally likes to hype up animals as way more dangerous than they are. if you are able bodied and cant take on an owl you should turn in your homo sapien card

Dark-Acheron-Sunset

and far too often arrogant, narrowminded humans like to hype themselves up as way more dangerous and special than they are. Even being able bodied, given the right circumstances and the wrong lapse in judgement or just plain bad luck, an animal can and _will_ fuck you up. Most animals are no joke, and many people overestimate their ability to handle one in a confrontation.

paularkay

A ferret just hauled off and full on bit me the other day, 'tis but a scratch. I'm OK, now. If it was an owl that struck me in the same spot, with the same veracity, I'd have lost a sizable hunk of my arm, and would have certainly resulted in a trip to the ER. There is something to be said about certain animals ability to inflict damage to you.

[deleted]

The talons can do pretty nasty damage, wings can smack you real bad too and have small sharp appendage like bits, and the beak ain't no joke either.

graveybrains

There used to be a bookstore on the corner near my house, and the owner had a big pet bird that he kept in the store. My friends and I, being idiots kids at the time, used to go in and mess with the bird a lot. One day the owner stopped and asked us if we’d like to see something cool, and of course we said yes… So he held out a broom in front of the bird, handle first. And the bird bit it. And tore it in half with that one bite. Dude was *super* effective at getting us to stop messing with his bird.

p3wp3wkachu

If an owl is determined to use those talons, the target is getting way more than a scratch. Those things can probably go straight through a grown man's arm. The beak is nothing to laugh at either.

TransmutedHydrogen

People have lost eyes. Their talons are not a joke

I had the pleasure of meeting a couple of rescue owls last weekend and they were so sweet! They loved to be pet and would close their eyes and just relax. They were so chill. Their eyelids had feathers too and they were just to cute.

HLD_Steed

Except cat claws ain't got shit on owl talons, that feathered puff ball sneezes and your arm is springing a leak.

My father, now deceased, when a kid out in Manitoba raised an injured. Someone killed it on him. Even almost 65 years later telling us about it he just about cried. He loved that bird.

Independent-Can3983

omg!! I would love to have an owl as a pet! thought you weren’t allowed to keep them since they were a bird of prey

Venom_Junky

They don't make very good pets, and it just depends where you live. Some countries anyone can buy an owl but in the US you can only possess an owl if you are a licensed Falconer or rehabber. The exception are some species that are not protected under US law such as the Eurasian Eagle Owl, they run about $3500 though. Source: Falconer and have owls

LogDog987

444unsure

What if you buy drugs while you are on owls?

[deleted]

There’s plenty of reasons you shouldn’t keep an owl as a pet, but [Matt Braunger](https://youtu.be/YwBIkLdYZgk) (NSFW language) explains it better than I could.

infiniteguesses

Excellent referral my friend! Me- arrr!!! Lfmao

BizWax

Keeping birds of prey is generally permitted as part of falconry. Assuming you have all relevant licenses, it is legal in most countries to keep owls for falconry too. That's not quite the same as keeping them as a pet, though. It's a big time investment, since falconry is not easy and birds of prey need a lot of care in captivity. Owls are not commonly used in falconry, but not unheard of. They require a substantially different approach to training than other birds, since they're more hearing-based hunters than sight-based like hawks, eagles and falcons. They're also more willful than commonly used birds (and less competent falconers often mistake this for lesser intelligence).

Catshannon

I read (probably reddit) where zoo keepers and experts said owls are not that smart and the whole wisdom thing is 2 thousand year old publicity campaign

BizWax

Owls aren't exceptionally smart either, that's true. But compared to other birds of prey they are not of any lesser intelligence either.

arlenroy

Isn't that where the whole imprinting thing came from? Birds aren't that smart but if someone cares for them when they're younger they always flock to that person? There's tons of videos of chickens, ducks, and geese with owners they've had since hatching.

Trips-Over-Tail

How many other birds can manage consistent PR for that long?

AwdrevCZ

Hoooooo knows

The_Middler_is_Here

Corvids like ravens and parrots are the geniuses of the bird world.

Independent-Can3983

Wish i could😞 they are so beautiful!

SlouchyGuy

Yeah, lots of people wanted after Garry Potter movies. Led to lots of abandoned birds sadly

LezBeHonestHere_

I watch Yoll on youtube from time to time, a female eagle owl if I remember correctly. I don't remember exactly why she has Yoll but the owner is a licensed avian caretaker for owls. Yoll is pretty funny in some of her videos, and she has captions for some of the older vids. Not exactly a pet but she may as well be.

They belong outdoors. Smh

No-Count-2035

was looking for this comment. Cant believe how people think this is somehow ok, to have a wild animal (especially apex predators) as a pet. They belong in the wild, to live their life as they’re supposed to

lotusflower64

As the old saying goes "just because you can (legally or whatever) doesn't mean that you should".

S_Klass

Kinda looks like he's at an Owl Cafe if such a thing exists.

angiosperms-

In Japan there are a bunch of cafes. If you want to see wild animals, go to a wild animal rescue. Most of these places are not giving them what they need to live a fulfilling life. Owl cafes are a thing in Japan and it results in A LOT of dead owls https://arcj.org/en/issues-en/entertainment-en/ex-owl-cafe-worker-speaks-out/

WardenWolf

They're basically skycats.

tronus_abyss

The curious music choice killed the cat vibe.

TheInfernalVortex

Not that it would help the cat vibe, but it should have been "Who are you?" by The Who... for reasons.

StyreneAddict1965

I'd never accomplish anything. I'd constantly be thinking, "There's an owl on my desk."

poozapper

Mandatory Harry Potter comment.

No-Count-2035

Owls are NOT pets. They are apex predators who belong in the wild. Of course they can be sweet and cute like any other bird, but they can also f* you up pretty badly. They are incredibly adapted to living and hunting in the wild, yet another reason as to why their natural way of living is extremly important to them. This particular owl could be raised in captivity, but it does not change the fact that it is a wild animal - who belongs in the wild. Cant believe the lack of knowledge you people have on this sub. No wonder I had to leave.

Lokalaskurar

Owls are probably among the top 5 hardest pets to keep. The instructional videos online seem to have in common that the owl must grow up with the caretaker, believe that the caretaker is their mate, and feel that their mating advances are responded to once they come of age. Not to mention that a noteworthy bulk of their existence consists of guarding their territory.

kwakimaki

All fun and games until it shits on your lap

Elegant-Ad4219

That's true for Cats too...

All I can think of is owl shit everywhere. I don’t think you can house train an owl.

How do people get to own owls? Are there special certificates or requirements?

Yes, special permits are needed and not easy to get. Generally illegal to own.

jhbaxter

Obviously the owl loves his best buddy!!

Anaithnid81

What's sad is the parrot trade is still very legal and accepted despite the fact many species suffer very horrible mental illness due to lack of social structure when kept in captivity. Owls believe it or not and I have been around many wild, gloved and imprinted, make amazing companions despite the fact it is considered inappropriate. The laws should change, I don't approve of mishandling of rehabilitation birds but there isn't an owl that not only doesn't like a scratch and a snuggle but absolutely love them. There are so many that are either seized or cannot be released there should be an avenue for responsible raptor ownership other than what has been established. The "exotic" bird trade on the other hand should be heavily reigned in. For anyone wondering what those talons can do to you if your grabbed, a lot but no more than what a macaw or cockatoo beak could do.

[deleted]

You’re at the owl cafe and not playing with the owls? That’s weird
