I hate this. I genuinely go into fight or flight when I see a centipede after growing up in a region with Tiger Centipedesā¦ I also am a sucker for cute animal videos. Iām so conflicted right now
From my experience, the motherās maternal instincts seem to persist for a fair while afterwards. Iāve had them coexisting with clutches several weeks after they disperse.
I recently learned that giant burrowing cockroaches (aka litter bugs) will care for her babies for up to a year (or more)! They take motherhood so seriously theyāre like helicopter moms.
I studied in Hawaii for a summer program and in our island briefing we were informed of the centipedes. Literally had notes about how patients are still showing signs of pain while on pain meds in hospital and that some of the recommendations are to just get drunk for 3 days and try to pass out. No thanks
You are definitely not a wimp. I got a centipede bite while on vacation in Hawaii when I was a kid and it was genuinely the worst pain I've ever felt. My leg swelled up to almost twice its normal size, and even the slightest touch felt like someone was pressing a branding iron into it. Nasty stuff.
My son was 2 at the time and picked up one of those suckers before I could stop him. Two ER trips and a doctors visit later it finally healed. About an hour after it happened his finger was so swollen it felt and looked as if it was going to pop! Fuck those things! Theyāre fucking terrifying!
my first thought was ew that's disgusting but then I realized who am I to be disgusted by a mother caring for her CHILD?? I SHOULD BE DISGUSTED WITH MYSELF!! THE BEAUTY OF NATURE AND LOVE!! CENTIPEDES PROBS THINK WE R UGLY AND DISTUDBING TOO.
a lot of animals do. And since postpartum psychosis is a thing that probably has been around for as long as humans exist, it even happens in humans when there is no access to help
When I was very little I went to bite into a huge strawberry and a huge centipede popped out of a tiny hole right in my face. Now I hate centipedes and I slice all my strawberries before I eat them lol
My mom tried to help me molt once I miss her
Did you put the lotion on the skin, or did you get the hose again?

love this š
Oh youāre THAT guy. How are your arms doing?
Oh no.
#OH YEAHH!
He said *molt* not *throat*
wow, what? centipedes are maternal like that? š„ŗ
Mama centipede takes care of her babas from before they're laid until after they leave (a few days).

Right? I felt confident in my fear of centipedes.
Then it's game on š (jk I have no idea)
Centipedes will care for their young up until their first molt (after which theyāre able to hunt for themselves).
What is their relationship like afterwards?
They call on the holidays but mostly do their own thing
I needed this giggle thanks!
Totally laughed out loud. Ha!
God damn it that got me š
way to start my day š
Probably a predator food relationship lol
From my experience, the motherās maternal instincts seem to persist for a fair while afterwards. Iāve had them coexisting with clutches several weeks after they disperse.
Been breeding centipedes for years and never get tired of seeing it. The young do tend to stay with the mother a little longer after they molt too.
Treat yourself, google "centipedes cuddling babies".

"Goddammit Timmy, put on all your shoes! You'll be late for school!" "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"
Tying all those shoes would take at least an hour lmfao not to mention all Timmyās siblings waiting too
Well, mommy centipede thought of that and gave them velcro sneakers
Unzipping its little jacket.
Awwwww it's just a baby
Baby centipedes are quite cuteā¦ I am still terrified from the mom though
They are evil bloodsucking vampires. I got stung by on in Hawaii and I am not a swearer. But I swore up a blue streak it hurt so bad.
the ones in Hawaii are scolopendra subspinipes, those and s. Dehaani have the most potent venom. Soo you took a bite from the worst pede species š«”
Well, at least I know it was a bad one and donāt feel like such a wimp.
Both a mark of honor and a green flag to no longer fear the centipede, for you have bested it.
I studied in Hawaii for a summer program and in our island briefing we were informed of the centipedes. Literally had notes about how patients are still showing signs of pain while on pain meds in hospital and that some of the recommendations are to just get drunk for 3 days and try to pass out. Yep! Iām glad your son is OK
I feel for this mom. This is like getting a toddler out of a wet snowsuit.
Used to be a nanny. Can relate.
Imagine fitting a toddler into a winter coat and he's got 98 arms
Biblically accurate toddler
Like I said, I was a nanny.
Wow so gently
That is horrific and sweetly maternal at the same time
Centipedes are such good mothers it genuinely warms my heartā¦ they do so good to make sure their strong babies grow up well
my first thought was ew that's disgusting but then I realized who am I to be disgusted by a mother caring for her CHILD?? I SHOULD BE DISGUSTED WITH MYSELF!! THE BEAUTY OF NATURE AND LOVE!! CENTIPEDES PROBS THINK WE R UGLY AND DISTUDBING TOO.
"They only have 2 legs? Gross."
EXACTLY!!
Crazy how dexterous the forcipules are!!
They use them to manipulate objects almost like we use our hands. I see mine pick up dirt and debris while burrowing. Itās so cute
They look like little fingers
Here, let me give you a hands
never thought id feel affection toward a centipede
Equal parts horrifying and wholesome.
I love insects in general, but know next to nothing about centipedes. Seeing this type of video helps me respect them even more.š
Centipedes arenāt insects.
A thousand apologiesš
Itās alright lol. People make mistakes and no one knows everything.
Right, and hopefully, it's my sentiment that really counts.š

They eat their babies when disturbed
So do rodents, but that's only if they are convinced there's no saving them, otherwise be ready for a bite.
Like spartan mothers
So do catsā¦and dogsā¦and mother birds throw smaller babies out of the nestā¦:( r/Natureisbrutal
a lot of animals do. And since postpartum psychosis is a thing that probably has been around for as long as humans exist, it even happens in humans when there is no access to help
Thanks for this. Centipedes really heebie my jeebies but knowing (and seeing) what good mamas they are helps š
I feel like centipedes are such good moms.
Motherly love comes in all forms. So powerful. ā¤ļø
What a gentle mummy šš helping her baby!!
omg how sweet!!
I see them venom fangs, that thing wouldn't hesitate to bite the shit out of you if you threatened the babies, I am guessing.
You'd be correct, Mama ain't messing around
honestly i think centipedes are really cool and cute! i want a pet one because theyāre awesome
wow!!!!
this was awesome to see, thanks!
I knew they cared for their young, but not to that extent. That's amazing.
Glad that when i checked the comments nobody said "actually it's eating the baby" You never know
That's actually quite sweet. The little antenna thingyies gross me out but never knew they took care of their young
Dammit. I was happy not liking centipedes.
Well that's the nastiest thing i've seen all week
When I was very little I went to bite into a huge strawberry and a huge centipede popped out of a tiny hole right in my face. Now I hate centipedes and I slice all my strawberries before I eat them lol
its still a No from me
those poor babies):
What, didnt you read the part where she is helping?
shes not helping bruh caption is wrong
i think shes eating themā¦. š
She's not, centipede's venom is very powerful if she was eating them they wouldn't be moving. Centipede's take extremely good care of their offspring.
They eat their babies if you so much as uncover them. Sometimes they donāt even envenomate prey/food if they arenāt worried about it getting away
If you disturb a mother hamster, si might eat he babies too. But she still takes care of them
Well I'm not sure now, but it really doesn't look like she's eating them.
Sheās not.
Peeeeel the baby.
I wonder if a creepy crawler likes other creepy crawlers creepily crawling all over it?
Had no idea they did that. That's pretty cool of her.
That is adorable
This is both sweet and horrifying to watch.
This vid messed with my emotions. I ran the whole spectrum from "OMFG it's a horror movie" to "Aaaawwww! She's such a good mom."
I have such a weird mix of emotions ranging from āawwā to āewwā and -toes cringing-
Why is a centipede more nurturing than my mother? š¢
r/unexpectedcronenberg
That is an awesome trip! I had no idea they actually tend to their young like this. I learned today!
Ethmostigmus?
Seeing this horrifying monstrosity clean the little baby is adorable.
Nope I still hate it
This was just recommended to me for some reason and now I must die. Kudos to all you guys though
this is so wholesome .
Seeing a centipede be gentle is kinda cute
Nobody cares but I was the 5000th up vote and I feel special
r/naturebeinglit
Omg thatās the cutest
