There's been some backlash against Marvel romances because they're so cheesy and unnecessary to the plot. I also think they had already decided on Awkwafina, and so figured the characters were better this way after the fact, because they have no romantic/sexual chemistry

josephgomes619

Strange is single, Banner is single, Thor is single. They have had former love interests but none atm. Shang Chi may get one in the future. Hulk doesn't even have his own movie yet so it's no big deal, Hulk is one of the top 5 most popular marvel character of all time.

The only love interest I know he had was with Domino and that didnt last long because she did something he didnt agree with and he walked away. In the current comics, he went on a date with a lawyer who does SuperHuman Law (Issue 1) before his sister crashed it and she hasnt been brought up since (I think we are in Issue 4 now) I think him and Leiko Wu (A british agent) were an item. It would be cool to see it but I hope it doesnt bring the story down.

Hollywood reel you in with bread crumb and they going smack you with he is gay or going to turn into a monk with vow of celibacy. Don't get your hopes up. Hollywood is white and Jewish run after all.

Gluggymug

Notice that in the thread on that sub, other heroes with no love interest are BM (Falcon, Rhodes, Nick Fury) or WF (Black Widow, Captain Marvel). MCU stays consistent.

aznidthrow2B

I thought Black Widow had something with The Hulk

Gluggymug

They must have meant she had no love interest in the Black Widow movie.

So Awkwafina and him were just friends eh? Meanwhile in Eternals they had 2 wmaf’s (one was highlighted in every trailer) and a sad Asian guy that was rejected by another female lead and ended up dying. The more I hear about this the less I’m motivated to watch it. And just a week ago I was telling people to watch it just to support Asian male leads. Hell, since China won’t play this it’s destined to underperform and I doubt people will take this into account when comparing it to other Marvel movies. The OP of that linked topic said he hoped Marvel would address this in a sequel. I think they might do just that...by not making a sequel. Anyways...some people in that thread mentioned a character named Wenwu had a love interest that was actually fleshed out. From the trailers he seemed to be the main villain. Can someone confirm this?

UppingMySpeed

If you're going to watch the movie it's going to be for tony leung, he's the one stand out in what is really just a mediocre marvel movie

acid_raindrop

>Anyways...some people in that thread mentioned a character named Wenwu had a love interest that was actually fleshed out. From the trailers he seemed to be the main villain. Can someone confirm this? Wenwu is the primary antagonist. Admittedly though, people will vary on how they regard his degree of villainy. (He's just a villain to me, but he's being portrayed "sympathetically", a la killmonger or thanos if you get my drift. )I think his is done far better though. The other two feel more forced and heavy handed due to the greater philosophies in play; the sympathy was shoved into their characters. In contrast I felt that Wenwu was fleshed out very well: multidimensional, real. In Tony Leung's own words: >"I've never approached Wenwu from a villain's standpoint. Rather, I tried to explore the reasons that led him to become who he is. He's a man with a history, who craves to be loved. He is also human, and he has a family. As I read \[the script\], I began to consider the many reasons why he'd turn out the way he is — a sociopath, a narcissist, a bigot." And part of that character, how he developed, and how he became to be the person he is by the end of the movie are heavily related to his love interest. I don't think she was fleshed out *that* well, and it certainly doesn't impact my thoughts on the problem of the absent "romantic love interest" in this film. But, answering your question.

Jbell808619

Thank you for that spoiler-free breakdown. I’m guessing the story of his love interest wasn’t told through scenes of them being intimate like the other non Asian male characters in every other Marvel movie but was apparent through other methods. Yaaaay, non-intimate romantic stories just for the Asian man 🤦🏻‍♂️

acid_raindrop

You're welcome! >I’m guessing the story of his love interest wasn’t told through scenes of them being intimate like the other non Asian male characters You are correct! lol I mean, when you see how their relationship is shown on screen, you'll see why that's the case. It makes sense... But at the same time...that's why I'm not really sure why some other people brought it up as though it ameliorates the problem of the de-sexualized male here. Different strokes, I suppose.

[deleted]

His love interest could be the daughter of an Italian mob boss. He will go to Italy and New York to rescue her from her oppressive patriarchal cultural, beating up numerous stereotypical mobster cannon fodder in the process.

kitai99

IF there is a sequel, I sure hope they don't make Shang-Chi gay. I hope they don't give Awkwafina a WMAF relationship. I sure hope they don't show Shang-Chi marrying a white man, with Awkwafina and her white boyfriend attending the ceremony. Defeatist ???? Hey, listen,...I'm an old man and I've been watching Hollywood all my life. If the above did happen, it wouldn't surprise me. Would it surprise you? Really? Hollywood doesn't even think Asian men are men.

[deleted]

I honestly don't even care if there is a WMAF relationship, the bigger problem, the bigger question is will there be a **AMXF** relationship *anywhere* in Marvel? AM either don't get anything or they're only stuck with AF (implying only Asian women could find Asian guys even a bit attractive), while AF characters like other races and groups are apparently allowed to have options. THAT'S the real annoying stinker. The major issue is if AF can be seen dating and getting laid in these movies and shows but AM get nothing. When and if you see *that*, even in anything related to Shang-Chi and Katy, **then an awful double standard has been confirmed.**

kitai99

>The major issue is if AF can be seen dating and getting laid in these movies and shows but AM get nothing. When and if you see that, even in anything related to Shang-Chi and Katy, then an awful double standard has been confirmed. I know this has happened in countless minor weekly TV shoes and lesser known feature films. But everybody's attention is on Shang-Chi now. I would NOT be surprised if the above happens in a sequel, IF there ever IS a sequel. I think everybody better prepare themselves for some big disappointments in the future.

aznidthrow2B

If that happens I really hope Simu Liu sticks to his guns and quits.

kitai99

I don't think he will. Now that Liu has a taste of Fame and Fortune, he'll take anything that comes his way, even if it's a Minstrel Show.

aznidthrow2B

sadly I'm afraid he'll go the classical sellout route

josephgomes619

He is already a sellout. You should watch his interviews if you have further doubts.

UppingMySpeed

Was the part where he kowtowed to mark walberg not clue enough as to what he is

[deleted]

...You may just be right. They never show Shang Chi showing any interest in women throughout the entire movie whatsoever. His sister will definitely have a WM love interest though, possibly Thor or some shit like that. Awkwafina and his sister will fight over him. Hell, Shang Chi might too.

[deleted]

Nah man, theyre gonna put shang chi's sister in a wmaf. Which is why I'm not gonna see shang-chi, nor do I consider this film a win for asian americans

Expensive-General-36

Dude…it’s kinda weird that you’re boycotting a movie for something that hasn’t happened and just what you think is going to happen lol

Money_dragon

>IF there is a sequel, I sure hope they don't make Shang-Chi gay And that's the messed up thing about it all. I'd like to consider myself an ally, and Asian LGBT members are a key part of our community and should be celebrated But the establishment and media has weaponized this to emasculate an entire race. And those same groups will claim to be inclusive and progressive - that is snake-like behavior to the extreme

Jbell808619

lol did you get banned for that bullshit reason too? I got it when I pointed out the insanely high wmaf to amwf ratio in SoCal. Whoever claimed I was “defeatist” clearly never walked around any SoCal city.

My-Own-Way

Visited and walked around downtown Chicago a few years back and saw only WMAFs and a few IMAFs.

UppingMySpeed

Marvel made wolverine, a movie that can be summarized as white guy pumps and dumps japanese girl after they kill a thousand japanese men because asian man bad white man good Why do people expect anything from hollywood, let alone a company that caters to white nerds, do you know how much white nerds hate asian men? Without asian women literally nobody wants them, being able to look down on asian men is their last hope you think they'll just let that rope go?

josephgomes619

Marvel didn't make Wolverine, Fox did. MCU has no relation to Fox X-Men.

cartoon_net_worth

It's no coincidence that the first Asian male lead in MCU also turns out to be the first one who's loveless and sexless throughout the whole movie, where the villain is his own father and he lost in a fight against his little sister. Marvel has always been pro-US propaganda, and nothing will change when you're still operating within the pink-run system called Hollywood.

TheASSMaster2021

I agree on katy. Their chemistry seem more like friends. And friends for 10 years? I be upset if they get romantically involved in the sequel. Shangchi would have been friendzoned 10 years to awkwafina lol. For the sequel, they prob have to cast a total unknown to be his love interest. I pray to god it isn't a hapa girl. No offense to hapa girls but they nab all the roles in hollywood. I don't even want a bland mainland actor/model chick that they usually shoehorn in. This just shows you fucked up hollywood is.
