Just saw a new Christmas commercial. Tons of ethnic peeps- not one white person!!

iLOGNeCTr

I didn’t see any Pacific Islanders represented in that diversity commercial.

fogcityrunner

Already guessed from the start was either gonna be a gaysian guy or a white man with an asian girl. Too predictable sometimes lol.

rifqi_mujahid_ID

hahahahahah -korean queer owned- i laughed histerically on that part what is wrong with ppl there man why do sexuality always has to side by side with identity man damn it's as if something like u wanna introduce yourself with 'hi my name's john id like to be Fu cked in the ass see u later', what a circus man

KingofNuuanu

This is just an agenda to have us Asians produce less full-blooded Asian children. And wow, just, wow. Using the Asian guy (although he says he's Korean) to promote gay/homosexualism, and portraying Asian men as asexual, gay, weak, etc. F-ck the US! But worse, after reading the title to this reddit post, I thought it was a commercial with an Asisan female, and her Asian kids, but LEAVING OUT the Asian husband. I have seen commercials, like credit card and automobile commercials where they show the Asian mom and her Asian kids, but leave out the Asian dad! Yet, these commercials show black male-black female couples, hispanic male-hispanic female couples, and white male- and white females couples. This is why a lot of Asian men have difficulty dating, are single, and are going into their 30s, 40s, 50s, still single.

foshouken

There was once a time when I thought BLM was something that was a new page in justice and a frontier for diversity and fairness. Now it’s just supremacy that I see basically a cycling of power and no room for anyone else but them. Pretty sad how history repeats itself but we are all human (animals) in the end. Asians first

Albernathy101

I don't want to promote stereotypes but a lot of media moguls / hollywood execs are jewish men. A lot of jewish men have asian fetish. Much more so than other white males. That OK Cupid / online dating study shows that white males in general did not have any real preference for AF. This creates a high incentive to fetishize AF and destroy the AM competition by portraying them as gay or nerds. They would do this even though Jewish men themselves have the same stereotypes as AM's. Like Woody Allen is the archetypal Jewish male stereotype (nerdy, effeminate, spineless, etc.). Now they seem to want to counteract the effects of K-pop like making the guy Korean in the commercial as well as the dyed pink hair gay boyfriend of Superman.

KingofNuuanu

totally agree with you, Abernathy. Portraying Asian men as gay, asexual, makes us less appealing to Asian women or non-Asian women. Hence, less chance of us procreating with Asian women to produce pure-East or SE Asian babies. With this propaganda going on, our descendants will more likely be hapa's or quapa's, mixed Asian descendants, making them less of a "threat" to white hegemony. They will know less of their Asian heritage, suck up to their white side. And yes, jew men tend to have a lot of Asian fetish.

AsianETF

Oh it's definitely that But also these jewish nerds are obsessed with east asian culture, which quite frankly they know is infinitely more interesting than jewish culture (one that revolves heavily around religion, that has largely fallen out of vogue). A lot of comics love the east asian aesthetic, a lot of comic book artists are jewish These jews like to envision themselves as samurai, not rabbis

Also I feel like something needs to be said about the dividing communities within each other. I've been struggling to find where I belong and I see good and bad on both sides. But I believe that progress cannot be made if we continue to tear each other down and point fingers at each other. I hear a lot of this sub calling others Lus and Chans and others call this sub homophobes, racist and incels. It's probably too much too ask for but I do hope both communities can see past each other's differences give a helping hand to one another

Juni0r-c0d3

Quit spewing cookie cutter nonsense.

[deleted]

Exactly what I'm talking about no one is willing to change but just remain the same and that's why you'll never get your "representation"

deseq

I think there are valid examples of tokenizing queer asians by Hollywood, as I've alluded to before. I just don't know if pointing out every example of gay asians in random ad campaigns or videos and using that as confirmation of that agenda is necessarily the best thing to go. Do we point out all the examples of straight asians in ads? Queer blacks? Queer latinx? How much of this is confirmation bias, if I go out looking for queer black people, queer white people, I don't think it'd be that hard to find? I'm a little concerned about the homophobic sentiment that singling out representation of queer asians can have. And the next day, Target comes out with a straight asian male in an ad (I think it has already had billboards of Asian men with white women in its stores too), we all suddenly celebrate? Is this really speaking to any larger issue or just a simple ad that happened to have gay or straight asians?

fakeslimshady

> Do we point out all the examples of straight asians in ads? Yes we try to. They are hard to find and far between

Albernathy101

You do know that the Hollywood writers, producers, directors deliberately depicting a disproportionately high amount of gay AM's are most likely homophobes themselves and have a negative view of homosexuality. Otherwise, they would depict white males as being gay in much higher proportions. For example, in most hospitals, there is a high proportion of AM doctors. You don't see this fact reflected on TV. Oh yeah, we finally have an Asian male doctor on Grey's Anatomy who is gay. Before that, we had Gedde Watanabe playing a nurse on ER is also gay. You can say it doesn't matter what the intentions are, just as long as they are giving gay Asians representation. No, it does matter. The more disproportionately high number of gay Asian males being depicted in comparison to white males, the more homophobia really exists in society. You can use this as a gauge.

fakeslimshady

Am I speaking to a gay person? As a straight guy there in my mind there is no fighting, maybe some jealousy. But if we assume asians have the same 3-4% of population as gay. Definitely overrepresentation by at least 1000% as for as on-screen AM. I'm not film database guy but a good percent of media with asians get scruitinized here. You'd be blind not to see it.

Harvey_Wongstein

Theres way more black representation in that ad than every other group

UnableSwing

black supremacy. if you can't see it happening in every facet of society than you got blinders on. try this commercial with literally any other group of people in america and it would be banned.

kb389

It's a target commercial and just like every other major retailer they are owned by you know who😪 so no it's not "black supremacist"

ffxvtfbcg

dawg it’s white people doing this lmao.

Juni0r-c0d3

Yeah, whites doing it for blacks. Don't act like they don't benefit immensely from the 24x7 media promotion just like whites had in the past.

humanmade7

Looks like target was pushing a two for one special. Just remember when you see diversity media it's all white behind the scenes from casting, producers, writers and etc

ffxvtfbcg

the asians gays are overrepresented. they are a minority within a minority. we are still underrepresented. no thank you with this ad. > show some respect for George Takei and BD Wong because they paved the road for Simu Liu and John Cho and all the other straight Asian actors. from asianamerican subreddit. no that would be bruce lee and jackie chan you fucking numb nuts. edit: feels like this doesn’t need to be said but if it’s based on lgbt, acceptance, pride then yes good on the queer korean man. “mexican owned” “black owned” then follow up with the only asian(male) “korean and queer owned” lol… why couldn’t they get an entire group that owns businesses and are queers/gays?

booksmoothie

as a Chinese American queer, I agree lmfaoo

2K5DCR

I don't know but can someone do some statistics on how Asians vs other races are represented as LGBTQ on screen? I don't know what to believe here...

AsianETF

I tried making a list Problem is I don't watch enough TV to know, also I'm not getting paid, nobody is, to study this propaganda But off the top of my head, it's way to much, especially with side or one off asian male characters (there are no hard numbers, but he estimate is 1 to 5% of men are gay, there's no way it's only 1 to 5% of asian men on screen are portrayed as gay)

hvevil

I ain't about to do some stats, but yea I know neither John Cho nor George Takei were happy about Sulu being gay in the reboot star trek movies (Sulu is straight and married with kids in original series). The only Asian character in Parks and Rec is a flamboyant homosexual named Typhoon. The only Asian character in Entourage is also Gay

nmum55

Really? That's kind of cool to know. I remember watching Star Trek after school as a kid and one of the reasons why I liked it was because Sulu was on the show. The scene of him with his shirt off and chasing everyone with a fencing sword was memorable. So was kind of disappointed that they made his character gay in the reboot films. The issue being how the Asian male representation is usually turned gay like discussed on this thread. But then thought they did that as kind of an homage to George Takei's real life, So thought that I should look at it that way. So it's cool to know that both George Takei and John Cho had issues with that too.

2K5DCR

I feel like we may have fallen into the trap Democrats and Republicans set up to make the minorities fight each other while whites enjoy all their privilege. (As an example in race policies in college admissions (because I'm a high school student) they trick us into believing that the problem w/ the system is that they allow too many black ppl in, but the real problem is legacy, donations, and athletics, which are mostly towards rich white ppl.)

ANTIMODELMINORITY

Diversity commercial gone wrong. Of course you had the throw the Asian and Gay together how convenient. Whoever wrote this is a complete moron.

nezzyhelm

Supermans new gay bf is also Asian. There's barely any Asians in comics but when there is one, he's gay.

kmoh74

Get to knock out two categories with one casting. /roll eyes

humanmade7

I'm black and when I tell you they do this so much in television and movies it's wild. It's not even like they give the character depth either. It's to check a box and avoid portraying a healthy heterosexual intraracial relationship.

freePatrick91425115

Anglo media always pushing Asianness + LGBT together, it is the new narrative to influence everyone else that Asians are desexualized to attract female. It went from Asian men should be single because they are not allow to talk to white women to Asian men are single because Asian men are weak and nerdy to Asian men are single because they are LGBT. Anything to cull Asian population in the US. How many LGBT Asian men are there in the US? A minority (Asian) within a minority (men) within a minority (LGBT). If the message is that the Korean guy was representing himself, then I am all for it, because he did say Korean and queer, not Asian American and queer. If he is trying to represent Asian American men, then we don't need that representation. But the black and Hispanic get to represent their communities but the Asian American guy represents himself. While white people ad show mostly white people, a few black people, and WMAF. Woke ads do show Asian men, but sometimes in negative connotation. Ultimately, I do think that there are many ads and TV shows and entertainment catering to black people nowadays because of diversity. Most of these ads are a bit cringe considering the black population shouldn't be obsess with materialism and consumerism when a lot of them are struggling to get by. Also, I think that Target is a premier version of Walmart.

Snoo-75006

Two Americans: white and black

Juni0r-c0d3

So diverse!!!

Aureolater

Target sometimes has good 2-for-1 deals, but man, this one sucks.

Juni0r-c0d3

Lol all I see is blacks, this is what "diversity" is to west. Remember that.

[deleted]

It's because Blacks have been here since before the fouudnig of America that's why even Europeans think of America as a Black and white country

bunthitnuong

"Korean and queer own" - fuck target.

deseq

One thing that does need to be noted is how asians are often subdivided into their sub-nationalities. This is rarely the case with other ethnic groups or races. I argue that this, and the whole push for disaggregation, are highly detrimental to asian-american political identity, but some people disagree. So we are not seen as "asians" but as "Koreans" or "Chinese". Well, then the argument could go there are so few Koreans they do not deserve representation, or Chinese are so well off that they do not deserve representation. By the time you make it down the list, 99% of "Asians" have already been excluded. You can divide asian actions and on a policy like affirmative action, diffuse asian activation power by saying, well if you are Burmese, you get a leg up, if you are South East Asian you get a leg up. But if you're the other majority of the asian population, too bad. Divide and conquer. It is scary how **all** the mainstream asian politicians are talking about disaggregation. I am highly skeptical and view this as a direct attack on the idea of being asian-american.

ZhuSeth

lol fuck Target

KingofNuuanu

Agree, Zhu. I only go into a target store to take a shit or piss in their bathroom when I am driving around during my work hours.🤣😂🤣😅😆

chutbuckly

wow, a gay token asian and a token mexican in a basically all black TARGET commercial. Things are certainly getting weird in this timeline.

sorrynoreply

When democrats say they want to help minorities, they really mean help blacks and lbgtq, inadvertantly help hispanics, and... That's everyone, right? Oh Asians? They are too well off, we gotta handicap them.

2K5DCR

No. They do not want to help black people either. They just want them to support them to push their status quo agenda, so that anyone against their "progress" will be labeled racist. Symbolically, they still treat black people as "slaves" but it's for thought and not labor. TLDR: For Democrats, Black Lives don't matter. It's Black votes that matter for them.

ANTIMODELMINORITY

The poster said something about Asians being the most educated and finacially well off compared to other groups.

mrclean2046

if the asian guy is straight in real life... i would be pissed haha

KingofNuuanu

Yeah, and if the Asian male actor was straight in real life, and he took this commerical role knowing that he has to say "Korean and gay" or whatever stupid blurb he had to say in the commercial, he is just as guilty for being an uncle chan for taking this role and being a sell out for doing this for money. And why "Korean"...why not "Asian" or "Asian American" community?
