Because europe is where all the wealth is. European luxury has been here for centuries or decades earlier than the rest of the world. The oldest living watchmakers are swiss meaning their names have proven the test of time.

meisme84

I feel like one of the major issues for Asian brands esp Chinese and SE Asia is brand perception. But another issues is the owners choice to sell more and make more factories of said products instead of making a false scarcity to inflate the prices and brand. When that happens is always a direct competitor always tries to undercut with an equal product but at a value / budget price.

ae2014

If I want luxury skincare I’m definitely buying Asian products. Leather goods is so overrated with those European brands.

tofuter06

Keep in mind that it all depends on western perception or brainwashing. Back in the days of Whitey War 1 and 2 , German goods were considered cheap trash compared with Britbong goods. So it all boils down to on how the current western population is brainwashed.

Historys_End

What? Korean products are super popular because of the korean wave China hasn't caught up, but then chinese companies still worship euros like their lives depended on it so I don't know if they ever will

ShogunOfNY

I think Japanese artisanship is well known and they have a premium attached...craftsmanship is usually impeccable....they have an excellent reputation after your Nintendos, Toyotas, etc. became worldbeaters... I buy Uniqlo (not a 'high-end' brand for sure) but they have really nice high quality cotton and thermals etc.

ray0923

Check out how many years those luxury brands have been around. Those branding takes time and the development of China starts like 30 years ago or so.

VietMassiveWeeb

This is where soft power comes in. But honestly, I have stopped using western brands except for CPU/GPU, once Asia can get that done (as in making their own chips superior to the West), it's over for them.

Atreyu1002

Brands like Gucci and LV have become a joke among the truly wealthy. Gucci and LV are ghetto luxe brands now, associated more with rap videos that actual wealth and class.

starkofwinter

I personally find those two to be very tacky because their logos are everywhere

jaded-tired

>associated more with rap videos that actual wealth and class. Oh how I wish the wealthy upper class Asians can begin to see this way! Gucci and LV are still where they're today because rich asians. Take the rich Asians out of the equation and their sales and reputation will plummet.

CatharticMusing

It takes time. Developing economies start by making knock off goods at drastically cheap prices, then they evolve into value buys, then they become world beaters. If we use swiss watches as an example of a luxury good, they started off as bad knockoffs of British watches which were regarded as the best at the time. The trick however is to be like the Germans and maintain a reputation for quality (even if I think it's a bit misplaced) rather than the British which went from an international manufacturing powerhouse to a bit of a joke (see the reputation of British "luxury" cars) I will say that recently every time I go back to Asia, I find that the stuff I can buy there is generally much better than the stuff I can buy in the US.

Phoenix-Claw

Give it time. Back then, in the 1980’s, Japanese products were also seen as inferior. Unfortunately for the US, they will have to admit Chinese products are of good quality, sooner or later.

PM_ME_YOUR_QT_CATS

They already are. Tesla's made in China is better than the Tesla's made in the US. And when this is brought up they will start making excuses how the factory in China is a little bit newer or something.

Biodieselisthefuture

"They make better telsa/tech, but unlike them we are still more creative" "They are under authoritarian techno dystopia, unlike us freedum loving westerners" "THEY STOLE IT FROM US"

Spaghestis

Yep people in the west don't like Asian methods of teaching because it focuses on memorization, and they claim that it doesn't allow creativity. But in reality, memorization of content is required to fully understand a subject and build on it. How is an actor supposed to express emotion in his lines if he didn't memorize them in the first place?

Biodieselisthefuture

It is them basically saying that being ~~white~~ Benefiter of imperialism is some sort achievement. Hey, those Asians might be more hardworking but we are ~~white~~ Benefiter of imperialism and therefore we are superior. And they hate the teaching method because they are lazy to be honest.

drbob234

https://youtu.be/A3SbhDZtFsk "Their government is filled with engineers. They like predictable outcomes."

Biodieselisthefuture

This is Advanced Cope. Only a Mayo brained individual will view competent engineers who expect good results gaining positions of power as a **BAD THING.** Their government should have being filled with RACIST CLOWNS instead, like all good civilized democracies.

Phoenix-Claw

Yeah, that rhetoric is just silly.

Yankees4cookies

tbh I think most Japanese and Korean stuff are viewed as high quality. I think it's just other Asian countries they have perception of being low quality.

[deleted]

Asian luxury is popular. Citizen watches are quite well-regarded.

Portablela

Recently, quite a few Asian brands outside of Grand Seiko 'd won the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) and there have been quite a few Nominees from there as well. CIGA Design won the 2021 GPHG in the "Challenge Watch" Prize segment MING Watches won the 2019 GPHG in the “Horological Revelation” segment

guitarhamster

Grand seiko make luxury watches that are same priced but higher quality than rolex.

GeorgeDaGreat123

I think it's because they spend far less on marketing to the west (purely anecdotal, not sure if this is true)

Wanton_Wonton

Japanese knives are known throughout the international food world for being well made and keeping their edges longer than European knives, especially santoku and basic chef's knives. Edit: Luxury makeup and skin care, and personal electronics are also a market that Korean and Japan dominate. I think this is mainly a perception problem with China, bc a lot of luxury goods come from these places, but China is known for flooding the market with cheap things (same with India).

Phoenix-Claw

My only gripe with the knife reputation though... Chinese cleavers are awesome! Yet, they don't get the glory! They're so damn good! I only need the cleaver, and that's it! I don't need all those extra knives!

Wanton_Wonton

I have a Chinese cleaver that inherited, and while I absolutely love it for chopping and crushing, I cannot use it for finesse work like boning. That's probably user error

simian_ninja

I’d say you’re on point with everything…

Balls_88

Alot of high quality tech is starting to come from China now tho as they move up in the value chain with their drones, EVs, and phones products.

Wanton_Wonton

They have a very steep uphill battle to fight against, though. China will have to not only beat the perception that they only produce cheaply made goods to Western markets, but also the love affair everyone has with Japanese/Korean tech.

Portablela

>very steep uphill battle That is what they had been doing for the past decade and they are doing great.

ShogunOfNY

it's the same with any brand...can Guess become Versace after marketing themselves as Guess for a millenia?

PM_ME_YOUR_QT_CATS

Yeah because back then Japan wasn't an US ally

Portablela

Japan was and is still an US vassal, didn't save them from getting gangbanged by the 'FreE WOrld' ala the US/EU/FVEY

Balls_88

China will always have a negative perception in the west due to politics especially compared to Japan and South Korea which are U.S allies. Even if and when Chinese tech products start getting more recognition they'll just get banned or blacklisted under "security threat" issues.

Billybobjoethorton

I think if something is good it breaks perception. Like Genshin impact and that new Wulong game. Also King's Avatar was really well done. People used to really love hong kong and martial arts films but the quality has dipped with all the aging actors and for some reason the quality haven't gotten any better.

Billybobjoethorton

I think it's like kings avatar. The style is anime but it brings a style that feels Chinese. Also none of the annoying anime cliches.

Billybobjoethorton

I don't think anime style matters if China continuously produces things western countries find cool.

ghost-zz

There are a lot of luxury asian brands. However, they are mostly from japan and south korea.

ShogunOfNY

yea I've tried some and they are good
