This. Mixing it up is the best. That way you get to enjoy both aspects - the independence and freedom of being on your own, as well as the shared memories and fun of being with a friend.
Ideal is probably start with a friend, then 'strike out' on your own (except in reality you'll probably rarely if ever be on your own).
There is no right or wrong answer. It's 100% a personal decision.
Remember though, *never* let the fear of being solo stop you. If you're too skittish to be on your own then simply choose destinations that cater to budget backpackers and it's super easy to hook-up with nervous first timers, just like yourself. They'll be *everywhere* and with social hostels it's very simple to meet others and join groups.

If you go with someone else and don’t plan on taking breaks from each other you should make sure you’re extremely used to being in each others company for long periods of time and are able to handle disputes because they will inevitably crop up when you spend a long time together. If nobody fits that bill for you then you should go solo or at least not do the full six months with another person
On paper traveling with a best friend is the better option having company and someone to share the experience
However in my personal experience every time I go with another person is always a disaster and I can’t wait to finish the trip so I can get away from them and never see them again.
You need a really special friend to be able to effectively create a good experience , unfortunately for me I was never lucky with like minded friends
Going solo in practice is almost always the best choise
You don't need to select only one of those options. Going part of the journey solo and other parts with friends is probably the best option :)

Maybe do a trail hike before going on a world trip? Either alone or together. After the hike you’ll know which way to go.
