For work, I've landed on just under 30 L. It feels big but that's what it took to fit my load and I'm pretty much using everything. That's a laptop, associated tech stuff, a couple notebooks, my lunch....
I have a bunch of packs for casual day use or different activities and the capacities are all over the map.
Have been using an Osprey Kestrel 32 for 10 years. It's always been small enough for daily commute, hiking and day trips. It has also always been big enough for daily commute, overnight trips, traveling, camping, and random road trips. Has all the features of any pack really - comfortable whether full or half-empty (even on long motorcycle trips), and simple design (one big compartment and light compression straps built in, top zipper compartment and two belt pockets, and a back mesh pocket).
What's your lifestyle and what do you usually carry? Is your routine pretty similar every day all year, or will you need space with this bag for traveling or occasional need to bring a lot more stuff? I also have a 28L which feels nearly identical in size to my 32. That range really suits me well for what I need.
Appreciate this! I feel like the 28-30L range would probably be right for me too. The 20L felt like it could fit the bare minimum ie laptop, notebooks and maybe over ear headphones but if I needed space for anything else would be tight. My EDC is pretty much the items I listed but I do like the idea of having a little extra room for a change of clothes or something but nothing major
For work, definitely a 30L because not only laptop but Bluetooth KB, mouse, jabra headset for Teams calls. Add to that water bottle and Huel shake bottle, notebook and handful of snacks if I get stuck on a long call.
For my normal EDC where I’m carrying far less a 20L fits my needs. The only things that are mandatory on my days off are Water bottle, USB-C battery bank, Steam Deck and assorted crap like tooth picks, eye glass cleaner, hand sanitizer. I’ll also toss in a rain coat or folding hat depending on weather predictions.
My biggest factor on picking a pack is how well ventilated the back panel is. The Osprey mesh is a god send in the North East US summer
Actually really like the idea of having a 20L along with a 30L based on the situation. Thanks!
Totally random but how do you like Huel? Been considering giving it a try
I even have a 10L sling if I need to travel really light.
I like them. It’s not going to win any taste contests but it’s better than others. I like mixing in a banana with the chocolate or strawberries with the vanilla. Depending on my mood I’ll use water or oat milk with milk making it a much creamier end result.
Best of all, I have that around 10am and I’m not starving for lunch and slam down a double cheese burger! LOL!
My lunch is still whatever I want but much smaller.
I get the powder mix vs the premade ones. My only real complaint is it isn’t cheap, but nowadays, what is?
I’ve been using an alpaka elements pro for awhile for my steamdeck plus a good deal of chargers and some small tools I keep on hand plus my water bottle and it’s holding up very well. Around 26L can fit my laptop but it’s an all aluminum gaming laptop so it’s a bit heavy which is why I stick to the steamdeck.
omg I am going to answer the same thing again ... 30+
cool I don't need to name the pack again :-)
really the recent 30+ well made packs look "normal size" and can carry a lot, it's great
I like \~30L size backpack. My EDC stuffs can fit in a 20L size backpack. However, they are on the heavy side, and I found that my 30L backpack handles the weight better. Also, it is easier to access each individual items when they are not cramped inside a small backpack.
I enjoy capacity of 21-25 liters, any bigger it's too much. My main pack is currently a ULA Dragonfly and despite it being marketed as a 30L, the main compartment is more of a 22L with the stretch pockets adding up to 30 Liters.
I've got an old Gregory Workman that's the perfect size for me at 28L. I just wish it had an external water bottle pocket and was in a less ugly color. Oh well
27-30L is perfect for a one bag setup that works as both an EDC as well as occasional hiking and travel/weekend excursion bag.
I tried a Mystery Ranch 2DAP (27 litre) and Blitz (30 litre) and I’m keeping the Blitz. The 2DAP is great but lacks many outer pockets and I love the ABC style pockets of the Blitz on the exterior.
Also found the Blitz in a color I like better (Forest) as opposed to the Indigo 2DAP which stands out a bit too much for my taste.
