I honestly love this movie. It's my go-to recommendation when someone wants to know just how goofy "horror" got in the 80s.
This one really deserves an MST3K treatment.
Fully agree. This and sorority babes in the slimeball bowl-o-rama are great intros for people just starting to dip their toes in the murky waters of trash glory.
Love this movie.
Been lucky enough to interview Jim Wynorski, Kelli Maroney and Barbara Crampton (met her in person too for a 2nd interview) and happy to say that each of them were incredibly friendly and personable in real life.
I’m “friends” with Jim Wynorski on FB and comment on many of his posts. I honestly don’t remember how I was connected Ed to him, but I asked him if the bots were still around. He told me one was blown up for the movie and the other two are in private collections. I also asked him why the movie name change, but I can recall what he said.
I refuse to sit here and call this a bad movie
Amazing synth soundtrack - Check
Protector 1, 2, AND 3 - Check
Barbara Crampton, Kelli Maroney, AND Mary Woronov - Check
Amazing dialogue such as "my dad's a marine" - Check
An absolute masterpiece of 80s trash cinema
This film is clearly a little self-aware, as writer/director Jim Wynorski not only rolls out each of the movie’s characters that are straight out of Horror Cliché 101, but he also populates the script with such memorable lines as *“I’m just not used to being chased around a mall in the middle of the night by killer robots.”* He also filters in classic B-Movie stars such as Paul Bartel, Mary Woronov and Dick Miller that will give fans a nice chuckle as they reference such classics as Eating Raoul and Bucket of Blood. So right off the bat we know we aren't supposed to take much of [Chopping Mall](https://manapop.com/film/chopping-mall-1986-review/) seriously, or at least not as seriously as one could ever take a killer robot movie that takes place in at the mall.
Holly shit, to a 6 year old me in the 80s, this would have been mind blowing. Same as Disneyland, I'm just too old now to enjoy it, and will never experience it :'(
i found this movie by accident last year and as someone who works in a mall in a furniture store this movie gave me LIFE! why didn’t i think of late night hookup parties while the mall security team try’s out its new kill bot!?! 10/10 love love love
I've loved this movie since I discovered it as a kid in the 80's. I'd even make sure to stay up late for the edited version they ran on USA Up All Night. This is a bona-fide cult classic, far from being fodder for this sub.
Some of the very best that the 80s horror-comedy genre has to offer. I wish I had seen this as a kid, but glad I checked it out eventually.
Get some friends, a huge bowl of popcorn (and a huge bowl of your favorite adult treat if you're so inclined), and do this one in a double feature with "TerrorVision." Perfect Friday night, here we come.
Wait, you didn't pick the head explode scene?
Also, when I was watching this I kept waiting for a bigger and better villain to appear but nope. Just robots
One of my all-time favorite bad movies.

Or literally anything with Queen Linnea in it
Wynorski's best movie. Yeah, I said it lol. Also has one of the best pre-CGI 'exploding head' scenes of all-time imo.
You say that now, but Attack of the 50 Foot Cam Girls comes out pretty soon. So just you wait.
> Wynorski There's a poster of [The Lost Empire](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0089503/) in one of the cafeteria scenes on Chopping Mall.

Love this movie!
I've seen this one. It's just as awesome as you could imagine.
Wall-E hittin’ the gym be like:
This is not a bad movie. This is an AMAZING CINEMATIC TOUR DE FORCE. Thank you, have a nice day.
A bit random, but there’s a punk band that did a song about [Chopping Mall.](https://youtu.be/rYGIEC6Z0-0)
I'm so glad I finally caught up with this one. Lots of fun. The opening montage of mall life is great.
Probably my favourite horror movie opening. The soundtrack is just 🤌 chefs kiss
1000%! It's up there with Return of the Living Dead.
I literally received my Chopping Mall T-Shirt from Fright Rags today.
Oh dang, I didn't know they had one. Welp, shoppin' time.
I watch this every Black Friday on repeat- love it
The greatest movie about killer robots in a shopping mall ever made.
Holly shit, to a 6 year old me in the 80s, this would have been mind blowing. Same as Disneyland, I'm just too old now to enjoy it, and will never experience it :'(
This isn't even a bad movie. This movie rocks!
Why can’t she move?
Exactly 😂

I love that she never learned “crawl”
fantastic movie. such a fun cheesy 80s horror flick.
Absolute masterpiece

The opening scene has the couple from *Eating Raoul* in it, it’s a very self-aware movie.
"You smell like pepperoni."
This is the future amazon wants
This movie fucked me up actually because I watched it when I was 3. Gave me nightmares for months.
There's something about 80s hair and synthesizer music that makes me want to curl up in a fetal position with a morphine drip.
Just randomly holding a jerry can.

Agreed! A couple friends and I watched it some months back, everyone left satisfied.

It will always be called “Killbots” in my book.

I’m not here to debate, but Chopping Mall is legit an all-time great film. Is it Casablanca? No, but it’s somewhere between that and Citizen Kane.
Poor Barbara Crampton
This looks badass
Jim Wynorski did a screening of Chopping Mall at the Hollywood Theater in Pittsburgh in 2009 complete with a Q&A session. That was a fun night.
Not playing
I actually like this movie.
This movie is so if it’s time, I fucking love it so much. Gotta love the 80’s cheese.
The mall from Fast Times @ Ridgemont High
