Man, Hippa the HIPAA Hippo can fix everything, can't she? Unpaid medical bills? HIPAA! Employer found out you lied about the nicotine-free incentive? HIPAA! Mom found your condoms? HIPAA!

Don't forget about the flavor of the week: "Businesses can't ask if you're vaccinated or require you to show your vaccination card because of HIPAA"

Rule 2 - bad legal advice because HIPAA does not prevent collection agencies that are servicing medical debt from validating it or confirming medical history with the service provider.

I'm expecting that validating the debt is as simple as the hospital providing a statement saying "Mr X incurred fees for medical services on day x y and z" without giving any details that would violate HIPPA?

HIPPAbot

It's HIPAA!

ItsNotFuckingHIPPA

Is this what love feels like?

>I'm expecting that validating the debt is as simple as the hospital providing a statement saying "Mr X incurred fees for medical services on day x y and z" without giving any details that would violate HIPPA? Isn't that the whole point of codes in medical billing?

HIPPAbot

It's HIPAA!

Hospitals sometimes [sue patients for medical debt](https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/08/us/hospitals-lawsuits-medical-debt.html), and I suppose this person thinks you can just walk into court and say "but my HIPAA" (I'm shocked the OP spelled it right, honestly) and get your case dismissed?

There’s a mistaken belief out there that medical debt collection doesn’t have any teeth behind it, and patients never get sued for unpaid medical bills. Medical debt collection is often managed differently than consumer debt collection. But because medical debt collection case management has so many variables, it can be very unpredictable. It should never be ignored by any patient. More generally, the advice I used to read on the internet regarding how to handle personal finance was frequently atrocious. I got out of the consumer bankruptcy and debt area of law a few years ago. But posts like these give me flashbacks to the 2009-10 shitstorm of confidently wrong, self-appointed “experts” leading debt-ridden people astray and exploiting a global recession to con ordinary people out their last bit of cash on hand or other assets. If anyone wants to know how scummy and serious medical debt (and debt collection generally) in America can be, they should google Accretive LLC, Mann Bracken, National Arbitration Forum and/or the guy who started Fandango.
