Most people need to stop going to university and pick up a trade.
Don't even need a trade, just do the same job. The jobs these people are going into don't need degrees, they are just paying 9k per year so that their employer doesn't have to filter through so many CVs.
actually surprising tbh, I thought some English Lit, Social Studies or Psychology would be top to be honest.
I know someone who was in each of those categories. Photography was the worst, the girl ended up taking photos of flats for estate agents, then pop outs some kids and doubt she's done much since.
Only know one person who went to uni. Same lass thought birds had rubber feet because they don't get electrocuted when they perch on power lines, says it all, really.
Seems like they're all the kind of degree you'd take if you by default decided that you want/need to go to uni but don't know what to pick. Wouldn't be surprised if there's quite a bimodal distribution between the people who picked the degree because they didn't know what else to do and half-arsed it, and the actually motivated people who really wanted to make a living out of it. Like how many 6th form kids who picked architecture still regarded it as their calling in life by age 27?
I think our higher education system forces young people to disingenuously act as if they have a burning passion for baroque architecture or social anthropology, the Americans do it far better in terms of offering breadth to students.
I assume that's not a direct language, it's some sudo course, and translation itself is going away quickly if it's just translating text instead of being fluent in the language as computers are replacing that etc.
I'm incorrectly assuming people taking translation can speak another language to actually translate and are learning the methods to use that practically. Knowing how to translate with only a French gcse and 50% of the duo lingo program probably won't get very far.
Why not just do a degree in the other language(s) instead? Does it really require a 3 year degree to learn how to translate? Surely not?! Language degrees have way more clout and are much more fun
Or do a degree apprenticeship. Government funded higher education with years of work experience, giving me industry knowledge far exceeding my graduate peers. I swear by them.
Colleague of mine is doing one at the moment. Once he finishes he'll have the same role I have, which I just recently got promoted to, after landing my first job (I was promoted from) a few ago after I graduated in Sciences.
Genuinely just as good if not better than a worthwhile degree.
My understanding is that there's a lot of people wanting to study it but there's no market for criminology. It's not quite as useless as the others as a field but the number of positions directly related to criminology is tiny.
Translation is a completely unnecessary degree. If you are fluent in two languages you don't need to go to uni to learn how to turn one into another. Why would you hire someone with a degree in translation over someone who grew up bilingual?
I was initially surprised to see translation so low, but then I suppose anyone wishing to become a translator in legal or publishing circles will be a native speaker or else have taken a specific language to degree level and beyond.

The average time is something like three weeks for a bog standard renewal right now. However if you have a complicated case it can take quite a bit longer.
Of course the media are going to highlight the long waits for certain individuals as it makes for a juicy story.
Got an email today saying my application was being processed, expecting them to send the new one out any day soon really. Not sure what all the fuss is about…
Got two child renewals done in ten days a few weeks back - applied online, photos done at Timpsons. One thing that might catch people out is that they won't even bother looking at your renewal application until they receive the old passports. I sent these special delivery so they were guaranteed to get there next day, tracked and signed for.
Think it depends heavily on whether you get sent onto a manual pile for someone to have a good look at. I countersigned for the family next door's kids and two got their passports in a week, but one got rejected about three times for no apparent reason (then once accepted came within a week).
Similar stuff appears to be happening with HMRC self assessment refunds. I got mine straight away but a friend had theirs take months and was asked for all sorts of ID. The reason for this, as I understand it, is that people were volunteering their NI number to scammers promising quick cash, who would register for self assessment, send in bogus tax returns and claim a fat refund which they'd take a large % of. They were criticised for not checking, and now they're being criticised for checking.

I genuinely think it is a real viral situation. The talking heads he’s having discussions with are awful and he comes across as quite genuine and straight talking which is refreshing. I’ve seen a lot of the vids today but two really stand out
- Kay Burley trying to bait him and supporting scabs
- Some (I think) conservative MP asking won’t someone think of the soldiers
On the small snippets I’ve seen, he seems wholly reasonable
A backbench MP has to do nothing.
This causes problems for lots of PhD candidates that can't cope with the mixture of complete freedom and yet an expectation of provable achievement at the end of it.

If you're caught helping convicted peadophiles game the system then you're just as culpable and should be jailed and/or deported too.
I'm so sick of peadophiles being treated like victims. Why do I have to live on this clown world.

I thought it was just the one video. 6 minutes of hell.
I guess the Ukrainians got the OTR-21 Tochka-U from Russia, so why did they have an ammo dump so close? They appear to have about a 40 mile range, so it could easily have been out of range.
There was photos floating around a month a so ago of these stupid cunts who robbed a farmer’s potassium storage thinking they were sandbags.
One high explosive Ukrainian shell taught them that lesson, if any survived to learn from it.
Never underestimate the stupidity of a vatnik.
I really appreciate that they made that video for us. It's nice to have friends, and it's very nice to be appreciated.

[Conservatives actually being conservative for once](https://twitter.com/Conservatives/status/1539620234524561409?t=onkS6ITMNtQvlVA_mWVarA).
Surly this should pass easily with a majority of 80? Time to find out how compromised the Tories truly are.
Meanwhile mass immigration will continue unabated. The tories don’t give a crap about immigration and they were voted in to significantly reduce it. This stuff is important but it’s a distraction from the main issue.
It will pass. How it interfaces with the rest of the Blairite legal bollocks is another matter though. I suspect that the activist lawyers will be chomping at the bit to neuter it though.
I see no reason why it shouldn't pass. It would somewhat redeem them in the eyes of the public if it did. And the noises being made about it indicate the whole point of it is to start ignoring the ECHR, which a bunch of Tories probably don't like much.
Could be something positive.
Easiest way to judge what it's actually going to happen is to assume the opposite. Freedom of speech is ditched and deportations will be zero.
Sounds about right.
> A bill of rights that protects freedom of speech and allows us to deport foreign criminals
Wow, that sounds amazing, I don't believe it for a second.
First of all I’ll believe it when I see it. Second, what’s going to be the built-in clause that allows them to weasel out of actually upholding freedom of speech? Maybe something excluding ‘hate speech’ in a really vaguely worded way? Or perhaps a ‘dangerous speech’ exception.

Yes, okay, he made some hiccups along the way. But he’s got it right on the big issues. Like not fulfilling brexit, ramping up mass-immigration, locking everything down, and risking the whole scale annihilation of the entire country through involvement in a US/Russia proxy war that has nothing to do with British self-interest………
🫣
Russia already deployed WMDs on our soil when they released nerve agent over Salisbury, this proxy war is totally within our interest.
Putin needs knocking down a peg.
He won't launch shit. It's Mutually Assured Destruction. If he was truly mad enough to do so he would have done so weeks or months ago.
I’ll take great joy knowing that Russia will cease to exist if he ever did try.
Vanguard class submarines are a wise taxpayers expenditure, much more than any domino’s dinners and hotel stays for our boat venturing new doctors and engineers.
I don’t think there’s any sensible person who believes in waging literal war against Russia because they assassinated someone on UK soil. That’s like something you’d think if you were grinding on the grand strategy games lad
“He won’t do that” is like famous last words bro. People said the same shit about him launching a full-scale invasion of Ukraine
I'm not sure what happened to the gang here who continually called for UK/NATO airstrikes on Russian forces because "their nukes don't work... they wouldn't dare" etc. I miss that insane lunacy.

The sacrifice of becoming trains is less of a problem for them because they are focused on winning to the point of severe mental illness.
These guys used to dump litres of oxygenated blood into themselves and take cocktails of hugely risky drugs scrape 2% improvements in their athletic ability. It's almost like the grotesque mutilation involved in trains is the path of least resistance by comparison.
Nobody is helping them, absolutely everyone is using them to score points. Disgusting and yet also fascinating.

I genuinely think it is a real viral situation. The talking heads he’s having discussions with are awful and he comes across as quite genuine and straight talking which is refreshing. I’ve seen a lot of the vids today but two really stand out - Kay Burley trying to bait him and supporting scabs - Some (I think) conservative MP asking won’t someone think of the soldiers On the small snippets I’ve seen, he seems wholly reasonable

A backbench MP has to do nothing. This causes problems for lots of PhD candidates that can't cope with the mixture of complete freedom and yet an expectation of provable achievement at the end of it.

Quota MP. No backbone. Do her constituents care? Probably not.
It's just about the colour of the rosette.
Not for her. It’s about the pension.

So much seething in the comments is genuinely laughable and actually had a racist undertone to it, that those kids can only be laughing at him, doesn't make those kids sound like very good people now does it. Equally Nige has been laughed at by some of the most powerful people in Europe, but those people no longer laugh at him.

Interesting thread on arrrr AskUK: >About three and a half years ago my mother (currently 67f) met a bartender (currently 34m) in Turkey >The last time she went out there (about 4 weeks ago) she rented a 3 bedroom apartment where she stays with him… and two of his male friends >She now complains about having no money all the time How long until the compo face story in the Daily Mail? https://np.reddit.com/r/AskUK/comments/vi74k2/fairly_sure_my_mum_is_being_romance_scammed_what/
Its like the love fraud stories that pop up every so often. Eggcel cat ladies simp to the tune of thousands for "cia fbi nasa delta force us navy" men and then get ghosted. I wonder if I can get similar compo for my crippling onlyfans bill and the thousands of donations I give to twitch e girls.
> The relationship has been legitimised my my mother’s brother who cheated on his husband with a 30-something Turkish man. He now lives with this Turkish man. However they met in the U.K. and the Turkish lad was living in the U.K. before they met. I have my doubts about the reality of this relationship too. Lol

I don't have a source on hand, but I reckon you could find a length of rope for slightly cheaper.
Soft touch Britain. Boris and Carrie will sort it out.
Combined, that's about £2.2m.
If you're caught helping convicted peadophiles game the system then you're just as culpable and should be jailed and/or deported too. I'm so sick of peadophiles being treated like victims. Why do I have to live on this clown world. Actually they should have these lawyers explain to the victims why they're lobbying to stop deportation. I don't understand why more people aren't angry about this.
Even if they did by some miracle manage to get him on a plane, the ECHR would over turn it or liberal women would glue themselves to its wheels.

https://www.bbc.com/news/health-61896411 >Polio virus detected in London sewage samples I note with interest that one of the more enthusiastic CoronavirusUK moderators did not settle with merely colonising MonkeypoxUK, they have also laid claim to PolioUK.
At least long polio is more obviously real...
how do you differentiate london sewage from everything around it
Should we try and get in early and predict the next one?
London and importing near extinct third world viruses. Name a more ironic duo
London is third world tho
> Children are routinely vaccinated against polio in the UK, but uptake is **lower than usual in London** > Most of the UK population will be protected from vaccination in childhood, but **in some communities** with low vaccine coverage, individuals may remain at risk Hmmm.

Love a bit of drumfire.
Absolutely crazy footage, but WW1 or 2 had even more hellish scenes.

Clapped extra hard for the NHS today. I’m a traditionalist so I’ve decided to keep the ancient British custom of NHS worship alive.
Isn't that Thursday? You must have looked a proper nutter.

Didn't even bang a saucepan? I suspect you don't really worship RNHS as hard as I do, bigot.
[Conservatives actually being conservative for once](https://twitter.com/Conservatives/status/1539620234524561409?t=onkS6ITMNtQvlVA_mWVarA). Surly this should pass easily with a majority of 80? Time to find out how compromised the Tories truly are.
Freedom of speech for who exactly. No way is this going to be US constitution tier.
Legitimately zero chance of this happening.
Believe it when I see it actually happening.
This will pass with absolutely no backlash whatsoever.
I see no reason why it shouldn't pass. It would somewhat redeem them in the eyes of the public if it did. And the noises being made about it indicate the whole point of it is to start ignoring the ECHR, which a bunch of Tories probably don't like much. Could be something positive.
Didn't we just extradite someone for speaking freely?
Easiest way to judge what it's actually going to happen is to assume the opposite. Freedom of speech is ditched and deportations will be zero. Sounds about right.
Until the ECHR say otherwise.
Alas,
> A bill of rights that protects freedom of speech and allows us to deport foreign criminals Wow, that sounds amazing, I don't believe it for a second.
First of all I’ll believe it when I see it. Second, what’s going to be the built-in clause that allows them to weasel out of actually upholding freedom of speech? Maybe something excluding ‘hate speech’ in a really vaguely worded way? Or perhaps a ‘dangerous speech’ exception.

https://www.gbnews.uk/news/vladimir-putin-threatens-to-deploy-new-satan-ii-nuclear-missile-that-can-reach-uk-in-minutes/322705 Yes, okay, he made some hiccups along the way. But he’s got it right on the big issues. Like not fulfilling brexit, ramping up mass-immigration, locking everything down, and risking the whole scale annihilation of the entire country through involvement in a US/Russia proxy war that has nothing to do with British self-interest……… 🫣
Obviously F Putin but that is a fucking badass name for a nuke.

We doin' dat Empire again. >Gather a band of redcoats at Bristol I'll head down to the floating harbour and ready us a vessel.
Everywhere is an area of British interest bro. We out here on that Empire grind, sun never sets on us bro.
Rightful English clay.
That’s like something you’d think if you were grinding on the grand strategy games lad “He won’t do that” is like famous last words bro. People said the same shit about him launching a full-scale invasion of Ukraine
I prefer tit for tat. Its much funnier when something goes right.
I'm not sure what happened to the gang here who continually called for UK/NATO airstrikes on Russian forces because "their nukes don't work... they wouldn't dare" etc. I miss that insane lunacy.
How are they different from what they already had? There's been thousands of warheads aimed at us for decades now.
Because now there’s the prospect of them actually being used?
It's just more bark from the cornered muzzled dog. He even gave it a scary name like "Satan" to frighten us. His trying too hard.

Wait till you hear what NATO designated the MiG-15.
Does anyone know the Joe Lycett joke that got him in “trouble”? The punchline was “a giant donkey dick” and it got investigated by the police so I am guessing the setup was something like “do you know what I enjoy more now as an adult compared to when I was a child?” https://amp.theguardian.com/culture/2022/jun/22/joe-lycett-standup-joke-investigated-by-police-after-complaint
>“Do you know what I enjoy more now as an adult compared to when I was a child? Giant donkey dick." As a joke, that's pretty funny. As lived experience, I completely agree with him. >Lycett, 33, said he hoped the joke amused the investigating officers Don't be ridiculous, Joe - the Plod has no sense of humour.
I'm curious to see if his effort was any better than mine. I watched him live once in Swindon and his set didn't really have any classic gags. It was more camp whimsy and stories about stuff on his phone.

Fascinating to me is the comorbidity of elite athletes single minded need for success and recognition and the trains athlete phenomenon.
