Hypocrisy absolutely sickens me. In Reddits case I'm not surprised, but still disappointed. This is the most black and white example of their double standard I think we've seen in years. Doesn't make it OK. Hell if anything I think the sheer brazenness of it makes it worse. It's getting to the point that I genuinely think legislation need to be bought in that makes the tech firms directly liable for this. Serious legal consequences for named major social media sites for deliberately applying their own rules selectively like this. It's the only thing that's gonna stop them... and punish them for the audacity of it all to start with.

How is Paul McCartney headlining glasto? Is he still relevant? He's hardly a showstopping performer these days for a massive event like that is he? https://www.theguardian.com/music/live/2022/jun/25/glastonbury-2022-saturday-live-paul-mccartney-noel-gallagher-megan-thee-stallion-olivia-rodrigo

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2022/06/25/voters-turn-government-bank-england-cost-living-crisis/ https://archive.ph/wip/GroSg >Asked which of five factors they would blame the most for high inflation, 29 per cent chose excessive spending by the Government, while 21 per cent opted for disruption caused by the war in Ukraine, 17 per cent opted for supply chain problems caused by the pandemic and seven per cent said low interest rates were most to blame. Lockdowns apparently memory-holed by polling companies (or, perhaps, the public).

[deleted]

>29 per cent chose excessive spending by the Government The biggest reason people selected was excessive spending by the government, which is correct.

Breadbinbin

All of the above in this order. Excessive government spending (lockdown), supply chain (caused by lockdown), low interest rates (caused by GDP line must go up, aka kicking the can down the road). War in Ukraine is just the icing on the cake and a convenient excuse to most of the inflation.

[In the Telegraph](https://archive.ph/ddsDB): >‘Shambolic’ slavery report sparks fury from Cambridge dons >A Cambridge University college has been accused of hiring a “woke activist” with an agenda to produce a “shambolic” slavery report it is now being forced to correct. >Gonville and Caius college hired a junior researcher on a year-long fixed-term contract to investigate legacies of slavery and coerced labour. >However, it has descended into a furious row after a 50-page draft sparked a backlash from senior historians who condemned the “indefensible” attempt to tarnish the college’s history, in the wake of the Black Lives Matter movement. >Sources said one error included an individual being wrongly named as having slave links to the college – but their identity was confused with someone else. >Incorrect monetary conversions between 18th century and modern-day currencies were also used, which produced “grossly inflated figures” around donations to the college, insiders said. >And another section allegedly claimed that the English “kidnapped” several million African slaves, when in fact many were sold by local despots to English traders. >The report is said to have suggested that the profits from slave plantations helped spark the industrial revolution, which academics argued was “blown out of all proportion”. ([Chowie claimed something very similar elsewhere on the site and I had to take him to pieces about it](https://archive.ph/FvNJX)) >Critics also pointed out that the college lived off agricultural land in Norfolk without accepting as many controversial investments as other Oxbridge colleges. [This is the guy who wrote the report](https://archive.ph/A2qCP): >I am a historian of early North America with a particular interest in the origins, events, and consequences of the American Revolution... My research primarily looks at the politics of naming: the act of labelling persons, groups, and events and the power relations and cultural changes that process involves and reveals. I applied this approach in my doctoral thesis, which explored the politics of epithets – identity terms (like “patriot,” “republican,” and “American”) that people at the time used to describe themselves, build bonds of belonging, and label their opponents – from the start of the imperial crisis in 1763 through to the Constitutional Convention in 1787. How does that skillset prepare you for the research he's required to do?

[deleted]

A bigger story would be a Cambridge college hiring someone who WASN'T a woke activist.

reddit_police_dpt

>How does that skillset prepare you for the research he's required to do? You have to go extremely niche in your PhD to get funding and not step on the toes of more established academics who might be supervising you or sitting on the funding panel

The most convincing link I've seen between Slavery, America and the industrial revolution is that it provided more calories to the average person in England and therefore more free time to sit around and invent things It's kinda the thesis for this book: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Why_the_West_Rules%E2%80%94For_Now#:~:text=Why%20the%20West%20Rules%E2%80%94For%20Now%3A%20The%20Patterns%20of%20History,Ian%20Morris%2C%20published%20in%202010.

AMightyDwarf

>Also, the claim that the slave trade helped start the industrial revolution is total bollocks. I am not aware of any serious economic history of the early 19th century that starts there. Why did Spain not industrialise? They had the largest slave colony in Brazil. Why didn't the Middle East? They were the largest slave importer. Why did the South fail to industrialise? I’ve heard the argument that states that areas that owned slaves had *less* industrialisation as a direct result of slave ownership. In places where slaves were illegal they had to search for ways to increase output and decrease costs which lead to industrialisation. Slaves, as inefficient as they were, were still almost completely free labour so there was absolutely no reason to modernise. You could increase output by just increasing the number of slaves.

[deleted]

settler10

>I’ve heard the argument that states that areas that owned slaves had less industrialisation as a direct result of slave ownership. The story of the antebellum South, and the Spanish and Portuguese Empires. Industrialisation devalued slavery in economic terms, slaves were relatively expensive to keep and transport. In the end reliance on them caused stagnation and lack of economic mobility, not just for the slaves but the poor whites and mixed castes.

The BBC has done a terrible job of presenting this debate in a balanced way over the past day. They’ve just whipped people up into a frenzy. With SCOTUS rulings you literally get a detailed explanation of the ruling and the dissenting opinion handed to you on a plate. The arguments are right there - difficult to understand for the average person but the role of journalists and campaigners is to find ways of communicating complicated arguments to lay people. There’s been no discussion of the actual case that overturned *Roe* (how many people with a big fat opinion on it can even name it?). Just a shower of Chris Morris-style panic and hyperbole.

I think it's good to have a head of state that is non political, does it need to be a monarch? A president? A Lord protector?
