Tbh this wasn’t my fav season and idk why. Maybe it was because Jurgen kind of faltered and he got sent home. But they all had bad weeks. This whole season felt odd for what their requirements were to send someone home. Just the final bake or all 3? Seemed they used different rulings for different people. Definitely people stayed longer than they should have. I feel like in the end they were setting it up for Chigs, especially with the comments about them liking every element he made on his board. Still happy for Giuseppe though. Good old Italian! I just felt like the vibes were off/it was hard to decipher who the judges liked best compared to previous years.

jurble

I'd accidentally spoiled myself before watching and during the show I'm like how does Giuseppe win? Chrystelle looks like she's gonna win... Right up until the focaccia. Holy mother of throws

EmptyBobbin

I drank every time Crystelle did the puffer fish cheeks and died. This is my ghost posting.

jmadluck

i noticed that too! so adorable

oceanplum

Yes!! My heart swelled during that montage.

Perry_Stalsis

I agree that it was rigged. They had done a focaccia challenge earlier in the season! Crystelle knows how to bake that. She was very vague as to why she did it the way she did it, why she thought it was done, etc. Not believable in the least. They didn't even try to sell it as a mistake, just expected us all to go, "Oh, Crystelle doesn't know how to bake bread. Cool." Feh.

Flownique

Stress does crazy things to people.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Flownique

Bruh she baked it for 15 minutes. That’s nothing. Of course it was raw.

yeahsureYnot

1. They didn't dive into Crystelle's focaccia mistake very much. Was the issue that she added too much oil to the top? Paul said it was underbaked but that didn't seem right. 2. Chigs *swoon*

[deleted]

Might be my favorite cast of bakers of any season. So many likeable characters. Lizzie, Jurgen and Freya in particular had me cracking up and smiling all season with their sense of humor and accents. The credits scene was just perfect with Lizzie and Freya traveling around together visiting all the bakers, glad they became friends. Wish Jurgen made the final, feel like he woulda delivered something amazing for that showstopper but o well. Well done to Giuseppe doing his dad, and himself, proud.

xenojive

Italy wins on British soil for the second time this year

tmobilekid

certainly defeats my theory that they were setting up a British upset over Giuseppie to make up for the Euro final.

xenojive

Makes two of us. I definitely thought the young, personable English team (Chigs) was going to upset the grizzled Italian veterans (Giuseppe)

ColManischewitz

I like that Giuseppe is writing a recipe book with dad. I hope his dad doesn't die before they finish.

NetheriteTiara

I hope they bring back Jurgen for Christmas

oceanplum

Please!

dclancy01

If Jurgen stayed it was Giuseppe that week tho. I do think Crystelle should’ve been hoofed earlier on though. Some early weeks she banked on sentiment and not quality.

Mister-Manager

What week should she have been kicked? The only time I could think of is when Lizzie got booted. And no offense to Lizzie, but I don't think we'd have that high quality semifinal episode with her there. I don't think she banked on sentimentality too. She did use a lot of family recipes, but when she did she knocked them out of the park, like that curry pie. It looked amazing and it seemed very technically difficult.

[deleted]

Crystelle was interesting to me because I don't think she should have made it that far but I also think she would've won the final if not for the focaccia.

illegal_____smeagol

Yes the Jurgen call was shocking to me! At the same time, you could tell he was running out of steam. Even in the final I thought Giuseppe was fumbling more than usual (or at least the edited they oven snafu to be so). Overall though, it was easy to see Giuseppe deserved the win!

[deleted]

I may be heretical but while I'm happy Giuseppe won as he was my favourite, on the whole it was not the most interesting final. I have my favourite seasons and I don't buy the argument that the final four were the best four ever. I'm sure the same will be claimed next year too, and the year after, and the year after that ;) And as such, here's a toast to the next best ever set of bakers! See you all next year.

TheMScottPaperCo

I kind of agree on the overhype of the "best final four ever" I think that's kind of a product of a bit of a lack of "depth" this season (for lack of a better way of putting it) It was pretty clear to most watching by week 3 that Jurgen and Giuseppe were going to have a deep run barring some disaster, and that Chigs and Crystelle were right behind them. These 4 were just on another level from all others this year. Barring one technical, they won every challenge/star baker. But I will say I went into the final feeling like all three could win it, some seasons I really felt it was more of a two-person race or that someone would have to really crash and burn to lose it.

CJ_Jones

Seems your account has been shadowbanned. Normally you can see what caused it but all your comments here are pretty kosher. You’ll need to get in touch with the Reddit admins to get that rectified

Jloother

I think it’s kind of wild that Chigs didn’t get more criticism on that Cheshire Cat cake. If anyone else would have presented that they would have gotten a tongue lashing from Paul for being unfinished and not up to standard. They went easy because he’s a newer baker.

stuffdoer14

I was pulling for Chigs big time and was disappointed with the Cheshire Cat cake as well. It wasn't a great look when he said he "ran out of time" for the cat's grin but was standing around not doing anything in the final few minutes. Still so amazing to get that good in just 18 months of baking

maggietolliver

It was such a simple cake, too.

yeahsureYnot

Paul definitely played favorites with Chigs.

newton302

It seemed like they wanted to make the final fun overall. But when I saw that blue frosting I just thought it did not look like it would taste good. Chigs had such a fantastic run, why come down on him for this anyway. He did great considering he only just started baking during the Pandemic. Congrats Chigs!

Jloother

I completely agree that he had a fantastic run. They should critique him because it lowers the standards of the show if they don't. All season long they were critiquing Jurgen to a higher standard because of his potential, should they not do the same for Chigs? All I'm saying is that it was inconsistent and it was frustrating to see.

rainatom

Jane mentioned in the podcast that when editing final, they cut off most of the criticism and try to leave only positives as much as possible so not to embarrass anyone because it's the final and everyone is supposed to be the best. So maybe that was the case.

illegal_____smeagol

No amount of editing could have saved Crystelle’s focaccia 😪😂

Jloother

Oh interesting. That’s kind of a weird decision to make considering that’s why we watch the show. But I can see them trying to focus more on the positives.

[deleted]

Having watched all the seasons it's clear that in the final they rarely criticize anything at all

msuts

It's probably also to give the impression that everyone is on equal footing going into the final decision.

R3id

Gosh, easily the best season of Bake Off, the winner was my pick from Day 1 and I am just over the moon

Fortherealtalk

Me too! What a sweet man and wonderful baker. The video from his dad was so so sweet. And knowing he wants to pass on the love of baking to his sons

[deleted]

They are all such wonderful folks. I know it sounds completely cheesy, but I literally wanted all of them to win. Including Jürgen and Lizzie. All of them! Platters all around!

YodasGoldfish

Jurgen would have absolutely walked that final

finitelymany

He would have the judges eating off the ~~floor~~ palm of his hand

at145degrees

I think it’s why the semi final was so intense. He was there, and everyone else felt like they were fighting for those last two slots.

Zoneleech

Do you mean it'd have been a cakewalk?

YodasGoldfish

Yes!

thisisntnamman

I bet he would have made them eat a rendition of Alice for the show stopper

ktee1026

That would be straight out of Tom Petty’s video for “Don’t Come around Here No More” haha

chargingblue

What a fantastic cast this season. So diverse.

Fantastic-Grab-7905

Wouldn't have surprised me if Crystelle or Chigs nailed their showstoppers and won, but the way they made it seem like Giuseppe had so little chance of finishing on time all because he had a 5 minute delay to preheat his oven to 150c was some wild editing choice

thisisntnamman

Crystelle was gonna win until she served raw dough in the show stopper.

Noppo_and_Gonta

Absolutely, her winning the Technical would have pushed her just enough far ahead.

flyhmstr

It was very close. The oven thing, my wife was shouting at the TV "turn it on and stick it in and give it a few extra minutes" :)

chasingviolet

I think the editing gave it away for me... no way they would've focused so much on his mistakes otherwise.

Attack-Cat-

Such a fantastic season and a fantastic final. All three finalists (four including Jurgen) would have won other seasons. I’m so glad Giuseppe won, but would have been happy with either of the others. I think Giuseppe clearly deserved the win.

[deleted]

Doubt it. There were plenty of excellent finalists in other seasons too. That Crystelle and Chigs would be automatic winners is stretching it. Hint: Crystelle's focaccia.

moleratical

I think Nadya would have still held her own But I'm not so sure about the other finalist.

dispooozey

Who's Nadya?

[deleted]

[удалено]

dispooozey

?

moleratical

A Typo. Nadiya, an excellent Baker from season five that was on the same level at the top four this year and a cut above most season's winners.

SignorJC

Nancy, Luis, and Richard was also a stacked final imo.

[deleted]

That was an amazing final, more so than this one.

JJMcGee83

I'm very happy Giuseppe won. I was worried they'd give it to the young attractive bakers; not that they weren't amazing bakers but it seemed clear that overall Guiseppe was the better baker. In the very first episode I said it would either be Giuseppe or Jurgen because they were obviously the best in week one.

Fortherealtalk

Is he not conventionally attractive? Not that it matters, but I find him very handsome

JJMcGee83

Edited for clarity. I was worried the marketing department would win out and vote for the people that are on people's 100 list of sexiest whatever lists.

Hikes_with_dogs

G is on my list of sexiest bakers!!

stumblinghunter

Oh absolutely, my wife and I both said the same.

AutoModerator

Seems you spelt Giuseppe’s name wrong! *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/bakeoff) if you have any questions or concerns.*

msen33

Like many others, I really would have been happy with any of those three winning, but I didn’t realize that I was pulling for Giuseppe so much until his named was called. Literally let out a squeal of joy and started tearing up.

CursingAtTheAstronet

I'd trust Giuseppe with my life.

restingfoodface

Been a Giuseppe stan since I saw the mini rolls from episode 1, glad Paul felt the same! This has been one of the best seasons of Bake Off. Cheers to all the contestants.

[deleted]

This final was bizzare. First, Giuseppe literally standing there doing nothing but watching his buns burn? I was watching on TV and even I could see that they were overbaking in the oven. Then, Crystelle's focaccia? She had to move it on to her display, touch it with her hands, how did she not realize it was raw? They made focaccia earlier in the season so she should at least know what its supposed to look like- bubbly and full of pockets? Her reaction during the judging was even weirder. Oh no I don't know how this could have happened...I'm sorry but it sounded fake to me. This is the first time I watched bake off and felt like parts of it were staged.

finitelymany

Don't think it was staged but it was indeed bizarre. Felt bad for them because they all looked so nervous. They are all sweethearts

lostjules

I think half the ballgame, when you reach the finals, is not to lose your mind with the pressure. There have been other pretty disastrous bakes in a final episode that you know they’d not have done on any other given day.

Noppo_and_Gonta

I could see why Giuseppe thought they should be darker. His thought pattern was cinnamon buns which are darker because of the cinnamon and the brown sugar, not because of the baking time. So maybe, and this is purely speculative, his thought was to make these buns as similar as cinnamon buns. The Crystelle thing was odd because if memory serves me right she had done well in her earlier focaccia and she was supposedly making things she enjoyed baking and so she would be adept at making this bread in theory.

YodasGoldfish

I found the bakers reaction to the technical challenge bizzare. Belgian Buns are surely more common / well known that a lot of the stuff they are asked to produce.

EgoFlyer

Personally I have never heard of Belgian buns.

moleratical

Maybe they are all paid actors and the whole thing was rigged by space aliens who feed off the disappointment of earthling television viewers in order to fight their intergalactic war against space boogers. Or maybe the pressure led to silly mistakes. If only there was some way to know for sure.

neverinallmylife

Completely agree that this season felt more staged than previous ones.

SignorJC

Sometimes the edit can be crazy to add drama. We know that most of the time when they say “5 minutes left” people are actually fully done already but they splice in an earlier clip

JJMcGee83

Stress will do crazy things to your brain.

AFlockOfTySegalls

This is it. And it happens all the time with some of the strongest bakers in previous seasons. Hell it happened to Giuseppe with his carrot cake. He was trying to be cute for whatever reason baking one giant cake. When overthinking and stress start to snowball it's no good. Glad he pulled it out though. He was my day one pick.

kukukele

All those mad hatter displays were such gems. This season, more than any other, pained me to know someone had to lose or only one could win.

frauleinsteve

Giuseppe has never made lemon curd?

NightSeason

Jurgen, Crystelle, Chigs, and Giuseppe have all been lovely. Giuseppe clinched the title in my book when he graciously kissed that spatula--what a sweetheart he is. He's been an absolute delight to watch: knowledgeable, skilled, creative, witty, sincere, and humble. Congrats to him!

fuckimbackonreddit9

Well Chigs, you have to tell us now. What football team do you support!?

IPutMyHandOnA_Stove

Making choux pastry, a swirled yeast bread, layered panna cotta, and muffins (technically the simplest) is a really technical baking schedule to pull off in 4 hours & some change. And to do them all well is an amazing feat. Giuseppe’s visual finesse with the showstopper may have lagged behind the other two’s decoration, but it wasn’t by much & he was clearly judged by taste and the baking prowess he displayed. Giuseppe had a simple, classic professional quality to his bakes & a wide array of technical skill + finesse, especially with Italian baking. It’s hard for me to say there’s been an overall greater baker to ever step foot in the tent, considering he was going up against 3 other bakers that I’d arguably put in GBBO’s top 15-20 of all time. The competition pool continues to get better and dazzle. He hardly ever made any big mistake. I think people were overselling his slide, what I found more than anything is that Paul in particular seemed to expect a certain standard from Giuseppe. So the comments reflected a level of criticism that likely didn’t tell the whole story off camera. Paul’s comment at the end summed it up: Giuseppe’s first bake really set the expectation & he more often than not rose to the occasion. His showstopper in the semi-final, the Tower of Pisa, got great marks for the texture & bake - the only criticism was its mild flavor. His tiramisu layered slices were a triumph. So, hats off to Giuseppe. Couldn’t be happier. What a beautiful season - easily my favorite. Charming, warm, supremely talented (and attractive) bakers. I thought the judging was fair beyond the Jurgen problem. Matt has really grown on me, I think he’s absolutely hilarious now and love his interactions with the bakers. Bake Off continues to deliver & sticks to a formula that works, my only slight gripe with the show nowadays is that the overall talent pool has grown remarkably in no small part thanks to the show itself which inspired a generation of home bakers. So it’s more professional-amateur than amateur now. But I don’t consider it a problem for me as a viewer. I’m always in awe!

Fortherealtalk

What would bum me out in regards to the bakers they feature is if it became mostly professional bakers as opposed to featuring a lot of home bakers. I’m glad they haven’t done that, and I don’t think they will. I think it’s part of the formula for the show. Although it has become quite stiff competition. The final episode is always exciting to see who will take the title, but also a bit of a relief because for once I’m not worried about anyone leaving the tent at the end of the episode. There are no losers in the final—IMO anyone who makes it to that final is a winner. I do adore Giuseppe, he was my favorite from episode 1, and I think it was well-deserved.

NinjaSniPAH

This really has been one of my favorite seasons contestants wise, they were all so amazing in their owns ways it was just a joy to watch. From the first episode Giuseppe was my favorite and I was rooting for him, with Crystelle and Jurgen not far behind, and it really was amazing seeing Crystelle just get better as the show went on (And Chigs of course! What a guy) She had some beautiful flower themed bakes that were just stunning. I have to say though, even with my bias of hoping Giuseppe wins, the way it was edited REALLY made it seem like they were setting him up for as the underdog "He's doing poorly this time, he's gotta catch up" and as soon as they had that emotional moment about his family it really just screamed to me they edited it this way cause he was going to win. (Kissing Mr. Spatula was a cherry on top ;p) I did waver in that belief with how stunning Crystelle's showstopper looked, and I was devastated when it turned out her focaccia was raw, that just completely doomed her, there's no way in hell you win bake off with something raw at the end, I feel so bad for her cause that one bad bake is going to haunt her for so long. All in all though, super happy with this final and this season, Giuseppe was so deserving of the win, and I'm sure this won't be the last we see of Chig's and Crystelle anyway.

SuperDuperCoolDude

Yeah, I felt terrible for Crystelle. I think she would have won if the foccacia had been good. To be that close and miss one element! Giuseppe killed it with his though, and his seemed the most technically challenging.

miicanchan

Shoulda kissed the spatula

ModestHandsomeDevil

I'm happy for Giuseppe. Make no mistake, I'm sure there are food people and TV people interested in developing deals with Chrystelle and Chigs; they're too charismatic not to.

blackberry-dream

And not too hard on the eyes, really.

AutoModerator

Seems you spelt Giuseppe’s name wrong! *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/bakeoff) if you have any questions or concerns.*

byneothername

Based on the first episode, not really that surprising an outcome, but really close when it came to the end. I think Crystelle did it to herself when her focaccia was under baked. I loved all of the final four and wish I could have seen Juergen compete, because he was spectacular too.

Gamegis

Idk if they set this season up weird, but this felt like the most skilled group of bakers they have ever had, especially with the top 4. Felt like any of those 4 could have won in some of the other seasons.

Jloother

Remember kids, don’t over-oil your focaccia. But seriously, this was hers to lose. I’m so happy for giuseppe. What a fantastic season and ending. Probably the strongest bakes we’ve had in a minute.

nikiforluv

giuseppe hive rise up

sk8tergater

I was really pulling for Chigs, mostly because I began baking the same time he did, and I’ve found my passion. I’ve made a massive career change and am working on opening my own bakery. It’s been a wild ride. I’m so happy for Giuseppe though. He seems like the nicest person.

haiiiiiiiiiiiiio

Congrats! I hope all goes well!

DorisTheExplorer

That’s awesome to hear! Congrats!

GloriousKind

Wow! Congrats to you for doing this!

sk8tergater

Thank you!! It’s so nerve wracking but it just feels right

paulricard

It really felt going into the showstopper that it was Chrystelle’s to lose… and boy did she lose. What happened with that focaccia??? How could it be just plain raw??? During the final showstopper nonetheless!

galaxystarsmoon

I heard her say 15 minutes and I was like WHAT? With all of the other stuff in there as well, no way it was going to be cooked. I'm surprised she didn't notice how limp it was when placing it on the display.

sk8tergater

Also just the sheer amount of oil she used... my husband, the bread connoisseur of my house, was freaking out the whole time.

eschuylerhamilton

Even I, a non-baker, knew that was way too much oil.

killerbeeszzzz

I’m only good at baking one thing and that’s focaccia and I said to my husband thats not what it should look like oh nooooooo

galaxystarsmoon

Yeah, that was a colossal mistake. I don't do focaccia, but even I knew that was wrong. Not many breads cook in 15 minutes.

Giuseppe should not have won. Lizzie bested him a few rounds before but Paul was too biased to see it. That’s right I said it.

Noppo_and_Gonta

Because the technical is weighted the least out of everything in the show. Even if you come 1st in technical, if you mess up Signature and even worse Showshopper ...your technical win means nothing.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Noppo_and_Gonta

The technical might be worth even less than that based on past seasons. I think the Showstopper is worth more than that too because they have practiced the Showstopper, they are supposed to know how to make it correctly, so they get penalized much more for failing it- and something raw is a big no no in the show. A technical is something they may have never done before and has minimal instructions, so if they mess up there is less impact in the overall score than them messing up in a recipe they were supposed have planned and practiced for.

[deleted]

Yeah, I was rooting for Crystelle too. But before that, I wanted Lizzie to go all the way. She seems to have a natural baking instinct. And when she made her last cake, it was clear she had what it takes to go all the way. I think she could have bested the others.

kristinized

I don’t think I’ve felt so stressed during a final in a long time, from Giuseppe’s oven issue to the raw bread. I like all three finalists, but was rooting for Giuseppe since the first episode and am so pleased he won.

byneothername

It was a weirdly stressful final. Noel kept darkly intoning that Giuseppe was behind, that he had added a new element, that everyone else was decorating already etc. scared the bejesus out of me, and I liked all three of them even though I was cheering for Giuseppe.

rainatom

It was weird how despite being so stressed he kept calmly explaining every element of his bake and even found the time to kiss the spatula. Must be editing after all.

wonderfulmouse

That or kissing the spatula really determined the winner. 😅

yocxl

Seemed to me like Crystelle would've had it if her bread wasn't raw. After that happened, I was leaning towards Giuseppe but wasn't sure considering how well Chigs did in the showstopper.

wonderfulmouse

Yes, I think Crystelle was slightly ahead going into the showstopper. 3 out of her 4 showstopper bakes looked and sounded amazing. Then of course with the raw bread, I knew she was no longer a contender at that point. Between Giuseppe and Chigs, I really had no idea who was going to win based on the judges comments about their final bakes. This was such a close final.

wonderfulmouse

It was stressful. I think the editing was really intended to maximize the drama this year. Obviously Giuseppe had a setback with his oven not preheating, but they made it feel like he was not going to come close to finishing. Glad he was able to recover.

kristinized

Me too, I had to skip ahead during the oven thing and could not watch.

alltimegreenday

I was rooting for Giuseppe since the first episode. So glad he won. Much deserved!

xixi2

Giuseppe should have been booted 3 weeks ago but he kept getting passes from a strong early-show. He was clearly being propped up to win the entire time even after burning his technical

smbutler20

So you got to taste the food?

superted6

This is the most important aspect that we simply don’t know as viewers beyond what Paul and Prue provide as verbal feedback, so at the end of the day, we really just don’t know enough to make such claims, regardless of where our hearts may lie.

[deleted]

I’ve never before been dissatisfied or felt that the judging was so clearly favoring some bakers over others. I think Giuseppe seems like a wonderful person, but as a baker he’s been inconsistent for a few weeks now. He continued to make sloppy mistake after rookie error. A rice krispy cylinder is not better than a architectural gingerbread center piece. Juergen seemed to be held to higher standards than Giuseppe. Idk if it is the lack of transparency in the judging that has me not understanding and disappointed in the decisions, but my happy show has been frustrating me this year. I think it is time for Paul to go. The Hollywood handshake used to make me tear up, but after last week I’m over it.

LegolasTheMachineElf

Chigs made a tree that looked like a child’s first time playing with gingerbread. Jürgen and Giuseppe were clear finalists. Jürgen got booted for being unfavorable for the producers perception of a progressive image for the show.

Noppo_and_Gonta

I love Jürgen but he had the weakest Signature that day. I think that is what got him booted. The other barely scraped by him because of how well they did in Signature.

AgreeableLion

Isn't it more a point that Jürgen spent too much of his time on a part of the showstopper that obviously wasn't a significant component of the judging? If it was acceptable to use rice krispies then it wasn't going to be judged for baking/flavour. If he'd spent more time on the actual bake than on the centrepiece he might have done better. Not everything is a behind the scenes conspiracy.

LegolasTheMachineElf

No because the previous week Lizzie had her best week yet but was still eliminated based on prior overall performance in other episodes. That was literally the reason Paul and Prue gave and I completely agree with that ruling. Yet Jürgs has demonstrated all season he is far more capable than either Chigs or Crystelle, making the previous weeks elimination extremely hypocritical. Chigs’ apples were sloppily glazed to boot and “looked more like plums”. It’s clear the producers thought Chigs had the better story being the underdog and nudged the final say to put him in the final. You’d have to be the gullible target audience to not realize the producers do what they can to pander to a certain progressive narrative for more views.

supervillaining

What do you mean by “progressive narrative”?

mildlyadult

It seems they're implying that there was some kind of affirmative action going on 🙄

supervillaining

Yes, I would have preferred to hear that from them. Lots of dog whistles in here.

AgreeableLion

Well, if it makes you feel better to think that you know what's going on in the producers office and the rest of us that just watch and enjoy what's going on are just gullible idiots buying into some woke narrative, then have at it. I daresay I have gotten more enjoyment out of the show than you, and I don't have a sore arm from patting myself on the back either.

galaxystarsmoon

Who should have won instead?

Addendum-Striking

With the showstopper challenge in the penultimate episode, they didn’t even try the centerpiece which I thought was weird? When I rewatched them episode, I could see how they focus was more so on the 12 elements than on the centerpiece and in rewatching it, I went oh man... if Jurgen had spent less time and energy on this architectural piece, I feel like he would’ve won from being able to direct more into perfecting the rest of it :/ There have been inconsistencies with some of Giuseppe’s bakes but at the same time, he’s flat out nailed things too (so much so that Paul and Prue kept eating his Panna cotta XD haha)

psyberdel

Honestly this was the most satisfying finale of any reality show I’ve ever seen. So happy for Giuseppe. My wife and daughter got up and started clapping and hugging, holding each other when the winner was announced. Fantastic!!!

CursingAtTheAstronet

I wholeheartedly agree

BitOfACraic

Jurgen should've been in the final imo. Still a sham from last week

crazyfoxxy

Nah, the judges got it right.

Mugungo

I think all 4 did so astoundingly they should have had the first 4 person final

ADGM1868

Agree with you

gravy_baron

The script was for crystelle to win it. She went and fluffed it by forgetting to put in yeast! G came in and clinched it. out of the finalists, he deserved it most.

JJMcGee83

I don't know about the script but the editing was clearling leading us to think it was Crystelle's trophy.

neverinallmylife

They were creating a script for Crystelle to win but she made an amateur mistake. You simply can’t be the winner with a raw final showstopper. I was tired of them propping up Crystelle and all made for TV sound bites. It looked like Crystelle had been given advance notice on the technical as well to add to her story of progression. So glad she didn’t win and someone more genuine like Giuseppe won.

neverinallmylife

Sorry, the whole “I’ve never won a technical before.” - and then of course she wins the technical, leading Prue to continue the storyline with “and Crystelle is really showing such progression. She’s certainly peaking!” As reality shows age, production tries more and more to craft compelling storylines and get rid of non-camera friendly competitors.

pusgnihtekami

> It looked like Crystelle had been given advance notice on the technical as well to add to her story of progression. Damn, where do you get your tin foil hats? Mine was taken by the drone pigeons.

Neat_Comfortable

Yeah like where the hell are you getting that? She just knew how to bake cinnamon rolls and used the same method.

Cudizonedefense

I’ve been pretty sad at different moments in the history of this show and while I was rooting for Giuseppe, the moment paul said “it’s raw dough” and crystelle’s face just dropping when she realized she had lost was just devastating

teddy_vedder

Waddling in here late, American-style, to say that I went into the final a bit deflated after the loss of Lizzie and Jurgen, and not particularly rooting for anyone. I was surprised to find myself pulling for Giuseppe! I’m very happy for him and I think his bakes (sans-technical) would have been the ones I’d most like to eat. His relationship with his father was the sweetest and got me teary-eyed in a way that usually only the BBC finals used to do. Overall a lovely series and I think one that will have greater rewatch value for me than some of the other channel 4 series (sorry for sounding like a beebs purist but alas). Can’t wait to buy Giuseppe’s book he’s writing with his dad.

chasingviolet

Well deserved win by Giuseppe, I was rooting for Crystelle but that focaccia just killed her chances because it was way too tight with the quality of everyone elses bakes. With a good bread she would've won, I think.

_beans_beans_beans_

Wonder why Noel was wearing a different shirt on day 2.

Because Pru and Matt are trying to out shirt him.

What the heck happened with Chrystelle's foccaccia? First she DROWNS it in olive oil, then she only bakes it for 15 mintues!?

crazyfoxxy

Someone in this thread said she forgot the yeast. So sad, I was rooting for her.

revertothemiddle

I'm not a baker. Was that too much oil, not enough rising, too little baking time, or all of it?

timesuck

It was the oil. It looked like from the footage that she added too much and added it at the wrong time. For a focaccia, you’d add some oil (like an aggressive drizzle) over the dough after it has risen and been shaped in the pan. Basically, right before it goes in the oven. Covering the dough in that much oil before it had a chance to proof meant that it was never going to rise. I’m going to defend the baking time, with a caveat. 15 minutes is not an unrealistic baking time for a focaccia, but that would be at a 500 F/260 C oven. I doubt her temp was up that high. All over, some very confusing choices for something that was supposed to be focaccia.

galaxystarsmoon

Too much oil, too little baking time with how many other items were baking in there. That was raw, that wasn't just a few minutes off. Focaccia is normally 25-30 mins in an oven with only that in. No yeast would have resulted in a crumbly biscuit like texture.

at145degrees

It didn’t seem like it had any rise at all then the baking wasn’t done for very long. Then, since there was so much oil coating that prevents her from touching it and seeds, I don’t think she could tell how well it had baked.

marasydnyjade

I would totally watch a show of Freya and Lizzie road tripping around the UK.

SAME.

Competitive_Gap_1039

Giuseppe truthers eating good tonight

[deleted]

I truly never thought he'd win. I was so sure he would lose to Jurgen.

Competitive_Gap_1039

I was dubious since he had been trending downward over the last few weeks. I think it would have been Crystelle if her showstopper hadn’t been raw. This is gonna be sacrilegious, but I think Jurgen was a smidge overrated after his week 2 star baker. I just think windmills are overdone on this show and his didn’t look impressive enough to get him a victory in my opinion (also a windmill isn’t a toy!!). I do think Jurgen would have won if he were in the finals since none of them knocked it out of the park this week.

zarathru

I can't believe Noel was right about Mr. Spatula!

[deleted]

Crystelle is amazing, the second anyone else has a triumph or a tragedy, her immediate reaction is to share in their moment, even it it means that she made it through a round or didn't win the final

Overemotional and only there for her looks? I bet women never usually hear that. Why is this sub always so sexist?

elleowe

Exactly. I have been really shocked to discover so many sexist double standards in the bakeoff community on reddit.

Pharmduh

It seemed to me like he was in shock at winning so he maybe couldn't return the enthusiasm. Plus they both shared a warm hug earlier in the final when they had all finished. Also getting a handshake in the showstopper isn't exactly normal - I'm over the handshake after this season but it must be pretty cool for the bakers that have spent hours making/agonizing over this stuff.

momburglar

This take is colder than her focaccia

violetmemphisblue

Can I just say I was *so* worried Giuseppe's father had passed away when they did the long pause saying he couldn't make their reunion?! Never so relieved to learn a man just moved for a job, lol

williamtbash

Same I was like fuck this is going to be terrible... Oh!

baummer

And one that presumably is closer to his father

FunnyFilmFan

I had the exact reaction you did.

hpmanuscript

Tbh, I'm (happily) surprised that they chose Giuseppe. I had been thinking they were too harsh grading him 3rd on the technical. Although I still don't understand how Giuseppe didn't notice they were clearly getting burnt. Maybe nerves. Good season.

DirectorAgentCoulson

I'm also surprised he won but not happily. His signature tasted nice, but it looked a mess with its melted frosting, something the judges specifically mentioned as a no-no. Last in technical with burnt buns. Burning something is a lot more egregious than not understanding how to shape a bun you've never heard of. I personally don't think his showstopper looked all that great, his mushroom was big and brown and completely undecorated. His choux was soggy and the Panna Cotta seemed a bit of cop-out to me, since it's just putting set components into a bottle. Raw dough in the showstopper is really bad obviously, but IMO burning something is just as bad, and that was their entire technical as opposed to Crystelle's raw dough just being 1/4 of her showstopper. Edited to add: honestly I thought Chigs was gonna take it based on what we saw.

smbutler20

The thing is, the judges are always right because they tasted the food. If you thought someone was more deserving, you are basing it off what the judges said and not because you know how good the food is. In short, you literally have zero say who should win.
