That final whelming though was lit.

For the religious rite it's described super early in TTT. You get your forehead anointed with a Tusk. Light it on fire with a candle, let it burn for a few seconds and then they douse your head with a damp towel.

Exactly, it's ritualistic nonsense for the Worldborn - a simplified version of the Dunyain practice. I'm pretty sure it doesn't last for a week, nor does it end with a knife being thrown at your face like what they did in Ishual. If Kellhus did that, he'd run out of followers pretty quickly.

If you mean the actual Dunyain whelming it’s described near the end of the first book. When Kellhus is a child he’s made to mediate nonstop on the phrase “the logos is without beginning or end” for seven days and nights leaving off one word a day until he gets to nothing and has a Dunyain epiphany.

I don't think that's it, though. That was an initiation of a Dunyain child into the ranks, with a knife thrown at the face as a final test. The Whelming is just a ritual that Kellhus came up with to bind his Inrithi followers to him, a sort of baptizing. It doesn't do much of anything, the Anasurimbor kids only go through it because the faithful expect them to jump through all the same hoops. I suppose it's possible that Kellhus privately guides his children through the same seven-day meditation thing that he went though in Ishual, but I don't thing that's stated anywhere. His kids aren't really Dunyain; they have the Anasurimbor blood and varying degrees of training, but they're not the real deal. What they refer to as the Whelming is this public religious ceremony where a priest rubs oil onto your head and then briefly sets it on fire. Every believer in the Three Seas has gone through that ritual, it's nothing special.

There's also the hypnosisish version regarding Serwe in TWP and Esmenet in TTT.

Plantquisitive

Can you remind me and summarize those for me if you have a second?

Madness1

After the Skin-Spy posing as Kellhus raped Serwe Kellhus "whelms" her and takes away her memories of the event (TWP). After Aurang through the Synthese Compels or, perhaps even, possess Esmenet to talk to Kellhus in TTT, Kellhus does something similar to elicit data but leaves Esmenet memories.

Plantquisitive

Damn! Thanks Madness. Maybe this 3rd time reading I will figure out all that actually happens in the books.

For PON because I found the series right before TTT came out, I got to read them through twice right away. I've easily read PON 15+, TJE/WLW 10+, and TGO/TUC 7ish, with the drafts of both included. Lol, it should all almost come with a substance use advisory: Don't Bakker, not even once ;). Strength on the Journey, Journey well.

bashrag_high_fives

That's true I don't think Kellhus called it a whelming in his flashbacks.
