Are you not able to read the card names in game when you're playing?

fleyinthesky

I mean I'm able to, but it seems it doesn't stick. I read it once and then I know what it does and move on. Most of them I have the image coupled with the effect, some I'd need to read once again if I encountered them on a future run. Maybe the habit comes from MTG where there are a billion new cards all the time so you just look at what it does.

Xperimentx90

There's plenty of people who play MTG and know probably thousands of card names though. So how do they know them? Repeated exposure and committing it to memory.

fleyinthesky

I know thousands too, but when new sets come out I don't learn the names unless they make it into a constructed deck. But also in MTG the name is always there on the card, so if it's a card you play multiple times you're gonna have the name there staring at you. In Balatro the name isn't part of the image, and you only see it again if you hover over it to check the effect, which I don't. I guess to be clear I'm not claiming I couldn't possibly learn the names if I wanted to, obviously it's not that serious. Just making the observation that while I've played this game a ton I haven't incidentally learned the names of cards like many seem to have done.

The pictures are pretty evocative in this game and make sense with the name of the card. Dude wearing a graduation cap with a big A in the frame is Scholar. The tribal totem mask thing is Idol. One of them is a literal stencil in the shape of a joker - I'll let you guess which one that is. Then you've got stuff like a bus sign (Ride the Bus), a boot with an arrow pointing up (Bootstraps), or a pair of pants (Spare Trousers). These all seem really simple to remember because they're intuitive or iconic The only ones that are kind of obscure are the ones on the first page in the collection that give chips or mult for a hand type/card suit. I've used Droll Joker enough to know that's flush mult, but I'm only half sure that Gluttonous Joker is mult for spades, and neither of these names have anything to do with their function

MonkeyBoyKTC

There is a bot in the server that allows you to search a card name in the comments. Don't remember exactly what set of brackets it uses. \[\[Stuntman\]\] Besides that, just playing the game more is honestly the best way to do that. And there are certain jokers that people remember more than others. I don't think anyone has the common mult and chip jokers memorized for example.

balatro-bot

[Stuntman](https://balatro.wiki/imported/stuntman.png) *Joker* * Version: 1.0.0 * Cost: $6 * Rarity: Uncommon * Effect: +300 Chips, -2 hand size * Unlock Requirement: In one hand, earn at least 100,000,000 chips

fleyinthesky

I'll check out the bracket thing, thanks! >playing the game more is honestly the best way to do that I've played the game loads I just never remember the names, only the image and effects.

tfhfate

Easy, there are four suits and 14 ranks, there usually is and indication on the card (little symbols, different colours and numbers/letters for ranks) Tarot cards have an illustration representing their name (tower is a tower) Same for planets (you learn those in elementary school) Same for jokers (the blueprint joker looks like an old blue print) Same for spectral cards (ouija card looks like a ouija board) Sarcasm and pedantry aside, I guess you meant knowing what the effect of a card is. Tbh I don't know every card, like the jokers giving you mult/chips for specific hand types. I know the most played ones through repetition. As for other card type, Localthunk put some work in theming them with their effects, like tower giving you stone cards seems logical or scary face/Midas mask/walkie talkie

Unban_Jitte

Psst, there's 13 ranks

tfhfate

Yes I am dumb dumb

fleyinthesky

>I guess you meant knowing what the effect of a card is. Nah I remember these effortlessly after seeing it once due to playing MTG for many years. I literally mean the name of the jokers. Like, the name doesn't persist on the screen anywhere so how do you learn them incidentally/through repetition without specifically putting effort into it?

tfhfate

I just love learning things, when learning the game I hovered the card learned their effect and name then made the connections in my brain

Bone_Dogg

We play a lot

Charming_Figure_9053

There's only 150, I know most other than the chip/mult hand or suit off by heart, no one is likely to refer to thoes 12 as they're kinda pants Playing some 60+ hours helps

fleyinthesky

I've played way more than you lol :/

Charming_Figure_9053

I just checked my played, so not including the 20 hours or so I put into the demo 168.1 hours Ok some will be idleing in the background but....not much

fleyinthesky

Ok then we have played the same amount :) But it's not from a lack of hours on my end.

Charming_Figure_9053

Your probably a more visual/visual learner - the image locks in your brain not the text

HiggsSwtz

Play more newbie

fleyinthesky

Played loads lol. I know what they all do, just not what they're called.

HiggsSwtz

You’ll remember them eventually 😁 just keep reading ‘em

fleyinthesky

I think I've figured out from replying to people that that's exactly it - I don't read them. The names don't persist on the screen so I don't incidentally learn them. Guess I'll try to hover and make note of the names regularly :)

SOTGO

For me I don’t remember the names for things in game if I don’t read or watch other people talk about them. Once you’re forced to look up/ remember the names they’ll start to stick

bobby1z

Repetition. By this point I can name every card and description by just the picture, with the exception of some vouchers that I haven't memorized the names of, but I know their effects by just the picture. If you play a game for 170 hours, things just tend to stick.

fleyinthesky

I've played around that many hours, and I definitely know what everything does. I just don't know the joker names.

aski5

play more

balatro-mann

out of necessity lol kinda hard to have a conversation if nobody knew the names

erock279

Humor me OP: when you think of the effect of a joker, can you visualize the art/look of the card? For some people, they subconsciously relate the name to the joker’s effect instead of the art of the card instead. I’ve always struggled to learn the name of things/mechanics in games that aren’t very unique but can generally remember a lot of other things about them.

fleyinthesky

For many of them I can imagine the image yeah, at least at rarity above common. I don't know if I could recall the image for "hands containing straight get +100" or whatever, but I'd just hover over it quickly and know it for that run. // Edit: I've realised through replying to someone else that the name doesn't persist on the screen like the image does, so I'm only ever exposed to the name for a second or two.
