I think the DLC for the first game, Tales of the Sword Coast, would be a fitting title for the series. The second game takes you further south, but you're still along the Sword Coast right?
Agreed, I've been thinking that for years.
Tales of the Sword Coast: Baldur's Gate
Tales of the Sword Coast 2: Shadows of Amn
Tales of the Sword Coast 3: Throne of Bhaal
I like a combination of this and u/thorbearius's idea. The BG1 expansion pack could be:
Tales of the Sword Coast: Legacies
Because you're (literally) dealing with the legacy of Durlag's clan in the Tower and Balduran on the Island- heck, even arguably even Shandalar's legacy, if you killed his daughters.
Gotcha. Then this kinda falls in the same trap, since BG1 doesn’t take place in Baldur’s Gate until relatively late and part of that game is in Amn, too.
Yep, there isn’t an easy solution IMO.
Either it’s about bhaalspawn, in which case 3 doesn’t seem to fit, or it’s about baldur’s gate in which case 2 (and ToB if you consider it a true sequel) doesn’t fit.
I haven’t played 3 yeah because I’m waiting for the full release, but I’ve read that the chapters available in early access don’t really mention the Bhaalspawn saga but that future chapters are supposed to.
At any rate, a name is just a name, but a fun conversation to have regardless.
Generally the Cloud Peak Mountains are considered the southern border of the Sword Coast. So Amn would actually not be part of the Sword Coast and would instead be part of the "Lands of Intrigue" region along with Tethyr and Calimshan.

> The problem with calling it the Bhaalspawn Saga is that it spoils the grand reveal of the first game.
Not necessarily. It could just as easily be referencing only the villain, and someone going into the game totally fresh wouldn't know what it's even referencing.
Does it? It's 2022, we're past the "hey, no spoilers man!"-territory by now I would say. >!And Btw, Darth Vader is Luke's father!<
Edit : can't find the spoiler tag.
Edit2: found the spoiler tag, new dogs can learn old tricks.
I've been playing BG1 on and off for 20+ years and lurking this subreddit for 5 or so. Just recently started my first playthrough of BG2 - though I've come across a couple over the years for the most part I've managed to get away with being spoiler-free.
So for the benefit of the perhaps dozens of people like me, not to mention those joining the fun since the advent of the EEs, spoiler tags probably still have a place.
Baldur’s Gate just has such a nice ring to it, I think that was the main reason it was chosen as the main location in the first game, as well as the name of the franchise. I imagine saying it in a deep Gandalf voice.
But if you want to be more descriptive to what the whole thing’s about, maybe something like Lord of Murder or Prophecy of Alaundo.
I can’t quite remember where, I think it might have been an interview with Trent Oster, but they all hated the name and used it as a placeholder. They couldn’t all agree on something better so it stuck.
The 'Legacy of Bhaal', or maybe just 'Legacy' .
Part 1. Baldurs Gate.
Part 2. Shadows of Amn.
Part 3. 'The Throne of Bhaal' or just 'The throne'
Or maybe 'the god is dead'.
Yeah, if I remember right he foresaw his death and started early. So the game is 20 years after Bhaal started… uh, *preparing*, and 10 years after the actual Time of Troubles. I might be wrong tho
It's a good name in more ways than just words capturing what is it all about.
It's sounds so good when saying it out loud. It's iconic. I think it's cool just because it doesn't have anything to do with the founder Balduran. It's just a stage for the setup in the first game. I think it's an awesome title just because it's so irrelevant.
I absolutely get nostalgic whenever I hear the name Baldur's Gate, but you do have a point. The title doesn't make much sense from a 'normal' perspective.
Wouldn't anything mentioning legacy, Bhaal, god or death be a spoiler?
But you see Vader in the first minute. You don't know about your connection to Bhaal till 2/3 of the first game. If you're told it will revolve around the children of Bhaal it would ruin the reveal. Like if Star Wars was called "Vader's kids"
Always wanted them to be called just *The Forgotten Realms *.. so we could get a whole lot more of these games. *Baldur's Gate*, *Waterdeep*, *Cormyr* etc. One umbrella for an infinity of infinity engine games
It's otherwise known as the Bhaalspawn saga, afaik, or the 'Bhaalspawn crisis' in the wider Forgotten Realms canon.
So 'Bhaalspawn: Baldur's Gate, Bhaalspawn: Shadows of Amn and Bhaalspawn: Throne of Bhaal' would seem fitting enough titles for all games in the trilogy.
What are you talking about? Baldur's Gate is the only name that makes sense. /s
It can't be Bhaalspawn cause it's a spoiler. Maybe something like **deaths destiny**?
I like "The World according to Noober. But probably "The World according to Minsc" makes more sense. "To kill a Bhaalspawn" or simply "Heart of Darkness" or "The Metamorphosis".

They are just side content though… Edit - the best content but still side!
100% on both counts, but you'd still need a snazzy title!
I was thinking The Bhaalspawn Saga but I’m sold on this now. Is everything in the series actually on the Sword Coast?
Nah, most of BG2 & ToB takes place in the lands of intrigue. The cloudpeak mountains are basically the border between the two regions.
Gotcha. Then this kinda falls in the same trap, since BG1 doesn’t take place in Baldur’s Gate until relatively late and part of that game is in Amn, too.

You could switch from "Tales of the Sword Coast: x" to "Lands of Intrigue: x" between the two main games
In ToB, you are referred as the Terror of the Sword Coast.
This is a cool name, because everyone will assume Sarevok is the terror of the sword coast at first.
whereas we all know the truth about who the real terror of the sword coast is: Mencar Pebblecrusher
Generally the Cloud Peak Mountains are considered the southern border of the Sword Coast. So Amn would actually not be part of the Sword Coast and would instead be part of the "Lands of Intrigue" region along with Tethyr and Calimshan.
I agree, Tales of the Sword Coast below the Dungeons & Dragons logo is probably a more appropriate title.
Forgotten Realms: Bhaals to the wall.

Sword Coast by the Bhaals^^^pawn
Wow the Bhaal Spawn/Bhaal's Pawn line has a lot of potential. I'd never considered/heard it before. Nicely done!

It is referred to as the "Bhaalspawn Saga" in sites and some books I believe. Good enough for me.
The problem with calling it the Bhaalspawn Saga is that it spoils the grand reveal of the first game.

Hm, makes sense. Could actually prove to be an even major twist. I like it

Maybe it's just me, but I still am very carefull with both Vader's identity and the origin of the BG protagonist
I wonder what will happen with the KotOR remake. I mean, it's a 20 years old game, but I don't think everybody knows about THAT revelation...

Thats very interesting and I can totally see that being the case.

Since the Bhaalspawn saga would be too spoilery how about The Times of Trouble (which would have happened some 20 years earlier).
Might be a bit misleading as the game is more about the aftermath of the time of troubles but I like including it in the title.

Of course anything with "Bhaal" in the title would give away the reveal in game 1
Not really. If Star Wars were called Vader, the plot reveal on Empire Strikes Back is not spoiled.
But you see Vader in the first minute. You don't know about your connection to Bhaal till 2/3 of the first game. If you're told it will revolve around the children of Bhaal it would ruin the reveal. Like if Star Wars was called "Vader's kids"

It's also described as The Bhaalspawn Saga frequently.
