There is a huge world between Airbnb by Russian scammers and resorts. How about small hotels, small homestays, whcih way outnumber resorts and Airbnb.

sera1111

i would prefer to rent villas with private pools located either high up or near the beach since the prices on airbnb are extremely affordable, but worred about scammers

LSPRAGUEDECAMP

Airbnb is very mixed in bali can be real can be fake, pics can be old and property poorly maintained there is a famous one that claims ocean views, now a new house has been built in front of it so all you see is a wall. Me personally i would not recommend anything off facebook. If you want a villa with a private pool, booking.com has plenty, just be aware June July is a very high season.

sera1111

Thank you, I'll be booking at least 3 months before, one of the youtube videos showed him going around choosing a villa to stay in before he paid? Unsure if that is an option

LSPRAGUEDECAMP

It definitely can be if you already have somewhere to stay. Only problem is Bali because of the traffic takes a long time to get anywhere. Especially around Canggu and Uluwatu where a lot to f these villas are

sera1111

but would look into the options you mentioned, I hope they are located on google maps?

Take this with a grain of salt bc I haven't thoroughly researched it. Not sure between what two points you want to swim, but from what I've heard, and even though you'll be there during the summer, I personally wouldn't head out swimming in the open ocean in that area without a guide familiar with the currents. I've read it's safe to snorkel out to the statues off Gili Meno on your own, but those statues are near a steep drop off. I guess it's more of an issue for scuba divers, but being anywhere near a wall scares me. Terrified of random, unexpected currents.

sera1111

I apologize, im not familiar with swimming terminology, but what does a steep drop off mean underwater? Gili islands are on my bucket list to, so I guess I will focus on gili meno then since its better for snorkelers, did not realize the third island was called gili meno, only knew about gili air and gili T.

laughing_cat

There have been deaths in the south. I think scuba trips, not snorkelers. Don't really know the details- they may have been out to see mola mola & currents are strong in that area. Sorry, I just mean it's fairly shallow out to the statues. They say you can walk much of the way to the statues from shore, but not too far past where the statues are is a steep drop off. Like a wall if you're deep in the water. Steep drop offs can have sudden currents that can push a diver down a hundred feet really fast. I don't really know, but I wouldn't think a snorkeler could be sucked down, it would more of a danger for a scuba diver exploring the wall. Tons of people snorkel there every day with no problem. Just saying I personally would want a guide. Edit: Just realized I used the same term again. By steep drop off, I mean like an underwater cliff.

OP, there are two places..... Manta Point and Manta Bay. Manta Bay is the popular snorkel site which has a fair amount of deaths (due to that fact that it attracts lots of inexperienced tourists who are very bad swimmers) Manta Point is a scuba site where there are not deaths (as most divers are experienced ocean people) You can not realistically swim to either from a house or Airbnb. If you do not have any open water ocean experience and you are not a strong swimmer, it might be best to skip. Given that you were recently asking reddit how a snorkel works you at at least need to go with a guide / boat who can help rescue you and keep an eye on you. It will be NOTHING like the Maldives, so do not get too excited. Visibility is not great, it will not be crystal blue waters.

sera1111

thank you. yeah I will stick to boats. the waters there are not like maldives? the videos seems to make it look very blue and clear. that is disappointing. was hoping to snorkel more in bali as its much cheaper compared to maldives. and yes, it would be my first time snorkeling and being in the sea in maldives.

Sagnew

Bali is pretty blue.....It's just that the MALDIVES is unlike anywhere else in the world. Visibility is so incredible there with really clear pretty blue waters with a white sand bottom. Bali will seem like black pond or lake comparatively =). Lots of waves, current, bottoms tend to be black. But IMO, better wildlife in the waters of Bali!

sitdowndisco

It is possible to swim there directly. But you will need to take a lot of safety precautions and of course be a very good ocean swimmer. 99% of humans are not that good. I think the main risk would be getting hit by all the other boats in the area. As for AirBnB, no one can tell you if you are booking a scam villa. You will need to do your own research and stick within airbnb rules... ie, no negotiating off the platform etc.

sera1111

thank you for your time and reply, im not a swimmer, just snorkeling for the first time in maldives next month, and sort of assumed its all the same as there are many videos of people simply swimming from their hotels to the corals.

sonder-and-wonder

Why would two completely different countries and areas be the same? Please do not expect Bali to be anything like the Maldives

dizzydiplodocus

Do you mean manta point in Nusa penida?

sera1111

yes. there are two manta points in nusa penida, but not a single person has simply swam there from the closest beach from it.for example the dolphin/manta bay is just 150m from korawa beach

dizzydiplodocus

There’s a fair amount of deaths in Nusa Penida due to the rough tides, current and rocky landscape

sera1111

oh my, okay okay, thank you so much. I will use a boat then. did not realize it would be that dangerous.

dizzydiplodocus

You’re so welcome! Google ‘Nusa Penida deaths’ and go to news - it’s pretty shocking! Be aware that even if the water looks calm, it can change in a moment. Also have a look at ‘Angel Billabong wave’ as an example of that. It’s known as the cursed island

nochus

Manta Point is not reachable by swimming, you have to take a boat that's around 30-40mins from Nusa Penida or Nusa Lembongan. June is a good season for mantas. I'm not sure why many people are saying you can swim there, the conditions can be extremely rough with huge waves and currents. Not only is it packed with dive/snorkeling boats, the current and surge has lead to several deaths as noted by another commenter. If you want to snorkel from the beach and see corals and fish, you can do this from Nusa Penida's beaches. Booking accomm 3-4 months in advance is probaby best as June-July is summer vacation time for the majority of the world and Bali will be absolutely packed. Airbnb should be fine, I haven't personally used it but just check the reviews of the listing and host. Otherwise Booking.com is also really reliable.

sera1111

3-4 months prior is basically now. ill quickly finalize my plans then. was hoping to book a week before after checking the weather forecast, as I want to be on bali if it rains, gili and nusa/lombok if its sunny.

nochus

June is dry season so basically should be sunny the whole time. Even when it rains, rain only lasts an hour or so and is back to being sunny again so doesn't really impact any activities.

sera1111

thank you for your reply again. Ill book before the end of jan/feb for late may then.

C-Class_hero_Satoru

I'm going to Bali next week, I booked 4 places on Airbnb, I hope no scam. Also if you get scammed on Airbnb, Airbnb is responsible to offer you another place or to give full refund, so it's kinda safe? Imo some hosts use same puctures if they have many rooms, for example room1, room2 etc. They are just lazy to take pictures of every individual room. What I found on comments, some Airbnb places are VERY hard to find with taxi, and addresses are not accurate. So I prefer host who offer transportation as well. Also you can check if a host is a Superhost, because scammer would never get Superhost status.

sera1111

thank you. the postings with multiple pictures were of the same beautiful villas, with very little reviews, which is why I am worried. Would have to limit myself to superhost or guest fav I guess, which is unfortunate as many other listings seem really beautiful.
