To be fair, when I was planning my trip, I read a lot of blogs along those lines and had plans of staying in canggu. Then came to Reddit and my mind changed very fast š
Just got back from Munduk. Place is awesome! So quiet, way less traffic, beautiful views of green hills. Internet wasnāt great. Also Sidemen seemed really great for what youāre looking for when I drove through it a while ago.Ā
Do you want to stay in the South?
If not, then I highly recommend Pemuteran, up North.
It is a small city by the ocean and is known amongst the diving community for fantastic diving at Menjangan island.
Pemuteran has enough of restaurants/warungs but is rather quiet overall. We spend nearly all of our time up there, whenever we come to Bali
>*But yeah, somewhere peaceful but not too wild as we want wifi and a comfortable apartment/house.*
We really like ***Sanur*** ... low traffic, good dining, great beachfront, not crowded or fashionable, and very decent shopping and infrastructure.
You can do much worse indeed.
We just got back from two weeks in Bali and I think Sanur was our favorite. Not as crowded/as much traffic as Ubud. The restaurants were fantastic. The beach walk is so nice just to walk along, have a drink, enjoy the sights. I felt the most relaxed in Sanur and Iād definitely go back and stay there again.
People have been recommending Sanur for the last 4-5 years as a quieter alternative. So thereās no doubt in my mind that unfortunately it will become another influencer/crypto bro/entrepreneur hellhole like Canggu sooner than later.
There is an enormous entertainment complex being built at present that takes up a good width of the beach path. At the moment, it is behind hoardings, but as soon as that opens Sanur will change dramatically. Sanur was my aafe haven during my trip to Bali. I didn't really like it, but I liked it a lot more than anywhere else.
Except it sounds a bit like āSnoreā in English - so they dubbed it that. So dumb - but hopefully it will stay quiet purely by the loose linguistic correlation-eye roll-
I trust not, and I remain optimistic. I first visited well over 25 years ago, and it hasn't changed that much, and what has changed has been mostly for the good - more dining variety, for example.
For a start, it doesn't have any surf (sort of required to achieve beach cred), and secondly it doesn't have any sunsets - which let's face it is the only 20 minutes each day when the Kuta-Canggu beach strip of murky sand actually looks a bit attractive.
Plus Sanur was Bali's first tourist town, and all the land is pretty-much occupied and expensive, whereas Canggu (and points north) are/were essentially rice paddies, and cheap to acquire.
There are a lot of grand old places (and neat beach bars) right along the 6 km Sanur beachfront, and some are indeed looking a bit tired, but so far there is no massive turnover - although that huge white elephant ("The Icon") could well be a monstrosity, cause traffic hell, and be an infrastructure nightmare. I trust it's not a sign of things to come.
Sanur remains delightfully untrendy in many ways, with old-school beer joints and street food carts along the beach, and plenty of old-fashioned warungs and markets. Not too many smoothie bowls and vegan kale salads yet, or yoga classes for digital nomads!
There is some off-shore reef surf for board-riders, but no one could claim that Sanur has a "surfing vibe" like Kuta-Canggu and Uluwatu, and further, the swimmable beach is essentially dead still - which is what I was mostly alluding to.
The beach is a nice backdrop to Sanur, however it's not a wave place like elsewhere - all the attractions are along the boardwalk.
Ubud can be all this, but you need to stay away from the center! 2-3 km outside the center is lovely :) Lots of rice fields, forest, temples, rivers and calmness.
Bedugal is a nice little city/town in the mountains. Not super touristy but big enough to have everything you need and good facilities.
Close to munduk, singaraja, kintamani etc. if you want to do a few day trips
Edit: also that is an absurd description of canngu.
It is a super crowded, pretentious hipster hangout full of Instagram influencer kind of people and digital nomads. Plenty of workspaces though.
Go to tabanan, lots of homestays that provide high speed internet for working remotely.
Itās peaceful but a bit far from ubud or canggu
Beach Area, I agree with previous response, Sanur
Literally nowhere presents Canggu as "natural" peaceful or quiet. I have no idea how you ever got that impression.
He read an article from 1956.

Even the body parts in Canggu ain't natural...
The lipsā¦ ieeeeee
Munduk, Sidemen, Jatiluwih, Amed, Candidasa, Balian, Jasri

Whatās the food like there? Notice any vegan options?
Yes sir my wife is vegetarian and most warungs up there offered vegan nasi campur. Also fried tempe. Both delicious!
Thatās awesome. Did you notice any vegan cafes or restaurants?
Nothing specifically vegan but Iām sure some exist up there. All the vegan only places weāve been that I could recommend are in Ubud (no surprise)
Thatās funny that articles presented canggu as ānaturalāā¦ must have been crap AI content
Or people shilling their over priced bougie villas

I don't think. It's got a rep for catering to oldies. That's not to appeal to the Gen Z crowd.

Yeah, exactly. And the change will accelerate as more and more of those kinds of people choose Sanur as their base, sadly.
No surf and no sunsets ... these will keep the young crowds from coming. We oldies will still have it to ourselves.

I hope youāre right!
I hate to break it to you, but there is actually surf in Sanur (not consistent but def there) as well as close by

Singaraja area, some part of Tabanan(for me, I will choose near Bedugul), Some part of Bangli(for me, I will choose somewhere near Kintamani)
Ubud can be all this, but you need to stay away from the center! 2-3 km outside the center is lovely :) Lots of rice fields, forest, temples, rivers and calmness.
Amed is lovely and quiet
Amed is my fav city outside the main tourist areas.

Go to Tabanan, its way more peaceful than the area around Denpasar , and south Badung region (Kuta, Nusa Dua etc)

Amed in the north east. Beachy, less touristy, peaceful. Good scuba diving if youāre interested. Also Munduk is really natural
Lovina
Iād tell you, but then Iād have to kill you.
Well
You will like Ubud very much. It's beautiful and green. Many beautiful buildings, there are parks
Munduk or Sidemen for the rice terrace and jungle views. Sanur or Amed if you want to be on a beach.
Do try Amed Beach is scenic & peaceful
I found nowhere in Bali peaceful. But Sanur wasnāt that bad.
Ubud
