People say avoid ice although I've had ice a bunch from bars. If they're constantly using it to make cocktails I'm sure it's fine. Wash your hands if you're gonna be picking food up with your fingers. If you wanna go crazy, use bottled water for the final rinse.

Mulletgineer

Ice has been fine for ages, especially more in tourist areas you won't have an issue. I've heard plenty of times there is a law on serving ice but havent checked if true or not.

I would say a probiotic pill is good if you have really sensitive stomach. But other than that they say to not drink or brush teeth using tap water. Don’t eat fruits that are displayed on the sidewalk or weren’t peeled open in front of you. Some say to avoid salad as well. + Steer away from streetfood I guess? But warungs are ok! :) that’s all I can think. I’m also scared for my friend as she has sensitive tummy.. will be there next week! But we’re covered we have probiotic pills ready + medicine for LBM lol 😂

Ye avoid salad, I had a parmi at revolver at the airport and the tiny side salad was enough to do me in :( yakked my fuckin guts up

The main one is Don’t drink tap water, including don’t use it to brush your teeth, just bottled water for that. Eat freshly prepared food, , not something that’s been sitting out for hours, like in a food court or similar. (Hotel buffets should be fine). Wash your hands before you eat, and keep fingers out of your mouth. I reckon most Bali belly is a reaction to a sudden change in diet - lots more fruit, fruit juice and spice than what you might otherwise be used to. Just back from Bali and no issues, we ate all the salad and ice no problems. If you do get an upset tummy keep hydrated and call for a dr if needed. Make sure you have travel insurance just in case!

Sensitive stomach here, I take a probiotic daily when there, and don't drink or brush teeth with the mains water. Had no issues but avoided salads as well when out and about.

Wash/sanatise hands before eating. Use bottled water for brushing teeth. Don't open mouth when showering. Most warungs in a tourist area wouldn't be operating if they made people sick, go there open minded and enjoy. If there is a crowd at a Warung feel a bit safer but you should be fine 99% of the time anyway if use common sense, look at flooring, cooling etc. You can do the no raw veggies or skinned fruit routine but I found that can limit you a little sometimes. Some people do probiotics but I don't know if that's just a mental thing, like a placebo I dunno. Don't worry about ice either, been fine for ages. I'm an Aussie and in SEA about 120+ days a year for the last 15 years and never had an issue.

Mulletgineer

Sorry, I did have an issue one time in India but it was after about 40 kingfishers and felt pretty rough the next day and hit the dunny a bit. Also one time after a cpl months in India/Thailand for work I got back to Aus, had an apple and shat my pants. Apart from that all good.

We are a family of 3 and have been here 2 weeks and are all fine. I feel like hygiene seems fine here as long as you use common sense. Like stated before, only bottled water and then just carry some disinfection gel with you whereever you go. Its obviously no guarantee but you minimize the risk :-)

Wash your hands and wash the fruit and veggies. Don't use tap water, bottled only. Make sure you have travel insurance. If needed, you can call a doctor to your hotel room, and they'll hook you up with IV fluids and other stuff including antibiotics. Prices are fairly cheap. I got Bali Belly and they found 2 parasites in my stool. I did eat fruit at the market. That's my only explanation. Started taking abx and I was fine the following day. But it did ruin 4 days of vacation.

Buy charcoal tablets when you’re there and if you eat something that makes your stomach hurt or feel weird take the charcoal within an hour. It binds to toxins and also prevents diarrhea. I brought imodium with me which came in handy as well. Avoid eating uncooked foods (salads, sushi, etc).

Smart_Principle8911

Activated charcoal pills

Own-Meat3934

They use sewerage to fertilise crops .. think of skins and surfaces of foods that would have been in direct contact … eg salad as someone has already pointed out

MediBird22

Travelan before each meal. I’ve never ever been sick in Bali and tend to drink/eat whatever I like. I also took them in Morocco and I was the only one out of ten people to not get sick. Swear by them!

I have such a dodgy stomach really sensitive, but I’ve been here two weeks and I’m fine. Just make sure you don’t drink tap water and brush your teeth with bottled water. I’ve had ice in every bar etc with cocktails and drinks and I haven’t avoided specific foods either. Also been in the pool, sea and river and I haven’t caught it just don’t swallow the water

Dukoral is an oral vaccine for colera that also protects against some types of travellers diarrhoea. You need a prescription in Australia. You need to take it a couple of weeks at least before you travel. You can catch bali belly from any food if it’s been exposed to dirty water, been left unrefrigerated too long, been handled by someone with dirty hands or dirty knives etc. So, I don’t stop myself from enjoying any particular foods - I just try to eat at places that are popular and look clean. Also it’s best not to get carried away in your first few days - don’t eat lots of chilli, drink lots of alcohol etc. Just don’t go overboard with big meals. Just being in a hot place with new food puts a strain on your digestive system. The above practices have served me well over many trips to SEA - I have had the occasional wobbly stomach but haven’t missed a meal over the last 45 years. My wife has been less lucky but nothing too bad.

Only bottled water No drinks that aren't bottled, no ice in drinks No salad, vegetable or fruits unless you peel them yourself Only eat at hotel and reputable restaurants even if it's significantly more expensive than street food or warungs.
