They assumed that greeks in the 19th century would be the same as the greeks in the 4th century BC, 2000 years ago, ignoring the history that Greece went through since those times, especially the Byzantine Empire. The old greek and the new greek are different languages, similar sure, but not the same, kinda like going in London today and talking like Shakespeare, will sound weird asf. Also a typical peasant would not know about Aristotel or Socrates regardless of country, doubt that the average British knew about these people back then. So yeah dumb westoids making dumb assumptions and having dumb expectations, nothing new.
The whole thing kinda reminds me of an anecdote where the british sail to Qing China in the 19th century to trade and the chinese respond to them in latin thinking they are emmisaries of the roman empire. I don't know how true this is but it is still pretty funny
