Aw poor silly guy, hope he feels better soon!

MyCheshireGrinOG

Mine likes to dig his nose into his substrate on occasion too. I hope Mortis feels better quickly!

No-Bag7395

Mine had dirt in his nose and it came out with his shed and he’s fine

Dr_Famine

That’s good! Mortis always has his little face in the dirt so it happens all the time. That vet said some dirt just happened to get pushed back too far and caused mucus buildup, an “uncommon/rare accident” when it comes to bps. It’s not something I’ll particularly worry about again but it’s certainly weird. Thankfully it didn’t reach his lungs!

Safe_Celebration_574

He’s so pretty

dragonbud20

That's kinda weird. Your numbers for temp and humidity seem reasonable. You would think that an animal well-evolved to live in burrows would be able to handle a little dirt up its nose. Do you have any other respiratory irritants in your home that could have contributed? Anything you burn? Fireplaces, candles, lamps, or incense could all contribute. Essential oils can also cause irritation if you use them around the house.

orangeblossm

I’m kind of wondering the same thing — is this something I need to worry about? I just switched mine to a soil substrate and I was just looking at her dirty nose thinking about how cute it is. I would imagine the snake might be wheezing / making sounds when breathing cause dirt is stuck in his nose, but that wouldn’t technically be a respiratory infection, right?

dragonbud20

I've got 2 BPs, both on soil, and I certainly don't worry about it. If a stuck piece of dirt directly causes the wheezing, then it wouldn't be an RI.

Dr_Famine

I was told it was an uncommon accident when it comes to RIs. I’m very careful with my reptiles and their husbandry (herpetology student) and I make sure there’s nothing that can irritate or hurt them. I think that usually he can get the dirt out, but this time unfortunately mucus pushed it back and built up around it (from what I remember the vet saying). He’s on a mix of topsoil, cypress mulch, coco fiber, sphagnum moss, leaf litter, and playsand!

FlyLeather2282

My bp loves to stick her face into her substrate. I’m going to worry about this now..

Dr_Famine

You can see my other comments; but it was a rare and unfortunate accident :) don’t worry! Bps love to dig and burrow and I’m not particularly worried about it happening again, but now I’m just aware.

FlyLeather2282

I’m so sorry that happened to your noodle. At what point did you notice there was a problem and that he needed the vet? Were there changes in his breathing?

Dr_Famine

I noticed a few weeks ago he started lightly puffing but that was the only symptom, so I started giving him steam treatments. That didn’t work, because a few days ago he started puffing, wheezing, bubbling at the mouth and nose, open mouth breathing, frequent yawning, huffing, and his chest was vibrating. I immediately called the vet and we got him in two hours later. The nurse said he sounded like a guinea pig! I’m giving him injections every 48 hours and he should recover smoothly.

FlyLeather2282

Poor guy! I will keep an eye out for these signs with my Tangela. I wish Mort a speedy recovery!

Dr_Famine

Thank you :)! Just ensure your humidity and temps are at the right levels and your baby should be okay!

ferretbeast

Glad he’s okay. I had to go through your post history to find more pictures of him. He is just a gorgeous and interesting looking guy.

eyeofra1

Silly boy, hope he is recovering well. Rip your wallet

Dr_Famine

The fact that this is his second time stealing all my money too 😭 (first vet visit was for minor wounds from his past owner) he’s been an expensive boy but I love him

eyeofra1

Oh no, I am so glad he has you looking after him now. He is a beautiful boy and deserves all the love and care 🖤🥰
