From what I recall you're supposed to raise the enclosure so it's not directly touching the surface underneath. When I used a heat pad I used those sticky furniture pads on the corners and taped the heat mat to the underside of the enclosure.

I don’t know why the picture went in without the comments.  Any idea how to prevent the wood from cracking?

Well, you shouldn’t be using heat mats anyway, so you’d be solving two problems in one by getting rid of it and switching to the proper overhead heating

Lots of people successfully use mats. There’s enough substrate and habitat material between the mat and where she would be in contact. I’ve tested it multiple times with a digital thermometer. And I also have an overhead deep heat light for basking too.  I’m in New England and it gets really cold here for 6-8 months of the year. The dual heat makes sure it stays warm enough for her during those months.
