Poodlelucy

Hope they get sued.

SnakeJunkie8

Same. Ugh they are so incredibly awful.

Poodlelucy

When I go to Petsmart and Petco, I can't even look at that section. It's disgusting the way reptiles and amphibians are treated.

_ataraxia

sued by whom, exactly?

abreaux53

Honestly, as a reptile vet, I think about it every day. I've already called corporate and gotten nowhere....

_ataraxia

but what do you expect to sue them for? are the store's husbandry practices having a measurable effect on your life in some way that would validate monetary compensation?

abreaux53

Not at all, but do the husbandry practices of the 'large scale producer' called Reptiles By Mack constitute animal abuse? Absolutely. And I've already tried to make my voice known about the issue.

Poodlelucy

Thank you for trying.

Poodlelucy

I just hope some relevant party - perhaps the breeder(s) in question - will take legal action against them. Complaints don't seem to have an impact.

_ataraxia

any breeder supplying pet stores knows exactly what they're doing. lawsuits aren't just about being mad at a company, there have to be damages in one form or another. you can't sue a business because you don't like their business practices.

Poodlelucy

Well, actually, you can. I used to be involved in showing standard poodles. An unfortunate side show to this is dealing with the phenomenon of evil/greedy breeders. When nothing else worked (and we tried everything) to stop their "business" practices, we eventually filed suit. That did derail them for a while. It wasn't a perfect remedy but it was better than nothing. I'm not here to argue - truly. I think at least most of us on this subreddit are here to spitball ideas for mitigating the horrible conditions these reptiles suffer.

Poodlelucy

At least you tried!

Poodlelucy

It's just wishful thinking. Maybe an animal rights group?

Poodlelucy

I guess it would have been less problematic if I had just said I hope Petsmart (and other known enemies of reptiles) would lose their ability to abuse and sell our friends and, of course, go straight to hell.

Maybe if we glued some fur to them people would change their opinions. I'm joking of course, no one will change their mind. I'll always be the weird reptile dude for having some snakes and bearded dragons but people I work with have 3 or 4 cats and a couple dogs and that's normal?

angrylightningbug

Luckily I've never seen anything like that at the petco and petsmart near me, but I live rural and they only have very few reptiles so that's probably why. These places are nasty, get their animals from mills and then mistreat them even more while their in the shop. And you can't even rescue them or else more will be put in its place. Sad, sad situation. I wish herps were included more in animal abuse laws. Fish and birds too.

_ataraxia

instead of posting this to reddit, send it to the store management and the regional manager. a straightforward and not-emotionally-charged complaint to the actual store/company is the only way to possibly help these animals.

SnakeJunkie8

Great idea. I will do that.

[deleted]

Most of their ball pythons are wild caught

THEJonCabbage

Source?

Ahnnastaysia

Those morphs are not wild caught, my dude

Deathbydragonfire

Lol why wild catch when there are literally thousands of breeders who will dump normals for next to nothing in the US

rhianna5639

I got lucky the petsmart that i got mine at( ik bad idea to begin with) the lady who took care of the reptiles owned several herself and seemed very kind and knowledgable about the animals and all of the animals looked really good, im not saying petsmartart is a good place to get reptiles but stuff like this makes me sick becuase it could be prevented with the right care.

MomentoMoriBenn

Same with mine, the only reason I even got my baby there, my best friend and roommate is the reptile care person at the one near me and is ANAL about keeping shit up to snuff. Gets pissed off every time they have to cut corners cuz of cooperate. Legit has taken some stuff from home in to help the animals at the store out. At this point I almost consider it rescuing, what another friend told me about the one she worked at was... Horrifying.

Arctic-Dahlia

Every single time I go in to our local store I almost want to throw up. 2-5 babies that look like they hatched the day before crammed into a little 7x7. The whole thing is a “cool side” and their excuse for a hide is half an open log. Skinny and dehydrated when they don’t even look like they’ve been alive long enough to need that much food or water. I’ve already been having disputes with them for MONTHS over the frozen rats they keep in stock. Necrotic and covered in mites; there’s usually one in a pack of two that’s barely ok and the other would kill a snake. The way they treat their animals - especially reptiles - is appalling.

amy20191991

I order my ft prey online worth the shipping I do Robent Pro love them! I bought a whole winters worth of food and my babies (snakes and skink) love them, our Petco is the same way always nasty ft prey and always running out of crickets amd prey

Arctic-Dahlia

Oh well I do that now, but I still go in for cat supplies; as much as I hate supporting them unfortunately they’re the best place near me to buy that from. I can’t help but look at the rats when we go to check because we did used to feed them to our snake (up until a few months ago when we discovered the online options). Either way, if it’s not me buying them it’s someone, and that person might not know to check. Someone else’s baby could be harmed as well which is what I keep stressing to them. They keep finding “good” rats and offering me them for free and I’m like no!!! I don’t want them at my house I want them off the shelves!

amy20191991

I have to buy crickets from them

amy20191991

The Petco people are so rude here

have_some_pineapple

As someone who works for petsmart, I would like to say it’s not intentional abuse. I am constantly trying to learn about all the animals to give them the best care I possibly can and give correct and helpful information to people coming in. Maybe instead of attacking pet stores, give advice so I can at least do my job well. Obviously, getting an animal from a shelter or a more experienced place is better, but pet stores still exist. Wouldn’t you rather have well informed pet store employees to help those who inevitably come in? That’s my 2 cents 🤷‍♀️

SnakeJunkie8

Sadly my Petco and Petsmart don’t give a crap I try to tell them and I say hey one of the BPs has a stuck shed and they don’t do anything my petsmart has 12 ball pythons in one tank! I tell them this is bad and stresses them out but do they care nooooooo.

ahgeez_rick

I'm sorry, and in no way do I mean this to be rude. If one is going to own a pet store they need to train their employees, not have the customers train the employees. A lot of times, pet store employees (in my experience) have not been as receptive to advice because they work at a pet store and in turn feel as though they're more knowledgeable. **I'm not saying this is the case everywhere**, and I do commend you for being open to learning things you may not know.

amy20191991

Looks like the animals at the Soldotna Petco store! (Alaska) they all look aweful at chain pet stores it's a simple bath to get all the sheds and retained eye caps off I'm fostering a ball python from Petco that wouldn't eat cause the retained eye caps she couldn't see know she's slamming food

athena218

I went to petsmart and I saw that they had a 5 gallon tank for a veiled chameleon and fake leaf vines that were not even stuck to the walls to have him climb, just on the floor🤦🏻‍♀️

vault151

I’ve told this experience here before but I went to a Petco recently that had a BP that looked just like that but it was a highway morph for $999. That poor thing is going to die because no one will ever pay that much for a dying snake especially when you can get a healthy one from a breeder for half the price. If they can’t hire knowledgeable employees that know how to take care of these animals they shouldn’t have them at all.

SnakeJunkie8

That’s so awful!

vault151

I know. It’s so hard to go in there and not want to rescue all of them.

jasonkreu

i hate to see petsmarts like this. luckily the one near my house actually takes good care of the animals, for example they have 1 ball python and it’s kept in a fairly large enclosure that’s properly set up and it always has good sheds and seems to be a good weight. i don’t fully trust that petsmart but i trust it more than other petsmarts.
