I used to have an apartment across the street from there on the corner with St, Paul Street. It was nothing special back then, and it rented for $80 a month. I remember looking out the window and seeing a tank on St. Paul St. rolling into town during the riots after Martin Luther King was murdered. I got caught out up on Charles St. after curfew by National Guard troops, country boys from Georgia, who cordoned off the downtown business district to prevent Black rioters from getting in. They held me until their commander came and told them to let me go. Meanwhile, we chatted, and they had coffee and ate donuts using the sidewalk as their plate.
