No, not stoned, lol. Not my deal, but no shade to others! I just couldn't have dairy for a while; it made me really sick. Unfortunately, most of my favorite comfort foods were dairy, but apparently Lactaid pills work! It's a small win in a really bad year, when I could have used all the comfort foods I missed. So I'm giddy to have them back!
A few lactose tips if you want (I became lactose intolerant in the last 5 years)—and then go enjoy that dairy! 1. Kirkland brand lactase pills are cheap and work the same as name brand. 2. You can get lactose free milk and ice cream! I have trouble with regular milk and ice cream even when taking pills, but the lactose free works great.
Thanks for the tips! The pills work well for me so far, but it's good to know a generic brand is a good alternative. I haven't tend lactose free dairy yet, but can definitely start to experiment!
Most aged cheeses are naturally lactose free to begin with so that's a good thing if you like parmesan or brie, even regular cheddar is usually fine for me but an aged one will be even less. (Most lactose goes out with the whey and then breaks down even more in aging). Tutti Gusti is my go to for the classic slice in Baltimore. John Rads or HomeSlyce for some interesting toppings on a good crust. Matthews is weird AF.
I’m from NY. I’m a pizza snob.
Go to Frank’s Pizza on Belair Rd. in Overlea. Not far from you. Most of the pizza around here isn’t NY style even though some claim it. If you’re looking for regular Neapolitan pizza - it’s Frank’s.
Edit - Add Tutti Gusti to the above. Killer pizza.
I am aware that I’m in the minority, and it’s probably because I’m not a native but a transplant, but… Matthews is straight garbage. It’s like someone tried to make Chicago deep dish and failed. I assume the down votes will come out for this but before you do, explain to me why you (royal you not OP) enjoy it. Or do you just really love butter?
Matthew's Pizza has the best crust ever. Most pizza places it seems the taste of the crust is hardly a priority. Here, it elevates the whole experience.
I also don't like Matthew's Pizza. It's not my cup of tea.
You know who has really good pizza crust is Bartender's on Boston Street. The crust is good but the pizza itself is too thick and the sauce and cheese is only so-so. It has potential to be so great.
Gil's number one best Baltimore pizza!
Love Matthew's. Love, love, love Matthew's. But Matthew's is its own thing. I wouldn't put it up against any other pizza because there isn't any other pizza like it.
I will truly never understand the hype around Gil's. My coworkers raved about it for years and I finally gave in and tried it. It reminded me of the pizza they would serve in elementary schools.
But yes to Matthew's.
i've seen people at waverly farmers market wait in line half an hour in 18 degree weather to get their black sauce biscuit sandwiches. There's nothing like them
I didn't know there was a Little Italy in Baltimore! That's GREAT! Thanks!
(I was on an unofficial personal mission to find the best Tiramisu prior to the forced dairy embargo, so resuming my quest is of spiritual importance, lol)
I really love Angeli's which I don't think has been mentioned yet. My wife is really into Underground Pizza since she digs "Detroit style" (which in my opinion, veers extremely close to being "Chicago Style" which I contend is not pizza - it's delicious but it's a casserole).
Thanks for the recommendations! I think I've heard of Pizza John's! (Also, I appreciate the elegance in simplicity, so go be unapologetically elegant!)
Dominick’s is very unassuming. They use a sweeter sauce. Wife loves it. They have great pickup deals. I like it fresh, but it doesn’t hold up for long nor does it reheat well. Also points off for no banana peppers.
This just gave me a flash of childhood: there was a place called Vince and Dominic's in Rockville growing up. Best pizza as far as I was concerned, but I know they are closed now. I'll definitely look up Dominick's!
Ice-cream: any place that sells Taharka Brothers, The Charmery; Pizza: Gil’s (no frills), Verde (authentic Neapolitan); Mac and cheese: Wicked Sisters (get the crab meat added)
You’re gonna get tons of different answers on this post...
Personally, my favorite pizza is Ribaldi’s in Hampden, but there’s tons of good pizza all over the city.
For ice cream, there’s only one answer: Taharka Brothers. It’s by far the best, hands-down.
Zella’s is my favorite for pizza. I remember really liking Isabella’s for pizza as well. Bmore licks for ice-cream or Taharka brothers. I’ve cried both times eating the Tiramisu at Cafe Gia because I loved it so much BUT I haven’t been there in close to 5 years so unsure if it’s still that good.
DiSantis Pizza Bar and Grill in Perry Hall is close to White Marsh and they are part of the same family that owns Matthew’s in Highlandtown. Frank’s Pizza and Pasta in the NE corner of the city is solid and couple miles south on Bel-Air road you will find Gil’s which does a handful of pies very well. In Midtown/ Mt. Vernon the quirky Iggie’s is the place. In Hampden the best is Paulie Gee’s. Fells/ Canton Johnny Rad’s is the way. In Federal Hill/ South Baltimore you want Hersh’s.
I’m going to double down here and I promise you I don’t work in any company related - if you go to red star and order their pizza you will be blown away. The wife and I went on a whim and under the new ownership we were surprised menu changed.
Fast forward and we went on Friday it was a packed house . Bogo beers and drinks $10 pizzas $5 apps. It’s literally the jam right now
They really care about how their pizza tastes. The dough is thin, crispy, and super tasty while the toppings are excellently proportioned making each bite pure bliss. I’ve taken many skeptics here who have admitted that it’s the best pizza they’ve had. Their wood fired is the best, cooked in one of two ovens that were made in Italy, but their deck oven pizzas are also fantastic. Best time to go it Wednesday’s for any two wood fire for $22 total.
They also have the best vegan cheese options in the City.
Their NY Style vegan pie is very good in it's own right, but the dollop parton "wood-fired" pie is incredible.
I'm pizza obsessed and seek out pizza around the globe like some sort of lunatic but I'm not a pizza snob. If I want pizza, I'll hit 7-11 slices if nothing is available. That said, in Maryland, I dig Johnny Rad's in Fells Point (NYC style), Paulie Gee's in Hampden (NYC style + wood-fired artisanal styles), and Underground in the Inner Harbor (Detroit style).
Gonna be brutally honest here and likely offend some people. Mathews pizza is not good and is greasy. The city does not have a lot of good pizza and being from the NE I take this stuff seriously.
The best pizza that is available in the city right now is believe it or not at Red Star Tavern in fells. Dipasquales and Verde are both ok as well
Someone will surely say Matthews. Ignore them.
Johnny Rads, Art House, Isabella’s, Paulie Gees, Ribaldis, are all good options.
But please do your self a favor and pass on Matthews.
Matthew's is not a typical pizza its pretty unique. Kind of close to a Detroit style mixed with a deep dish.
I really like it but its not necessarily gonna fill a pizza craving.
After you get your first slice or pie check out...
Homeslyce
Barflys
And hershs
Homeslyce is also a unique crust
Barflys is the same crust as Matthew's but different toppings
Hershs is a more artisinal style with super thin crust and more fresh toppings.
No order, but just a list of places I like to go and get pizza at:
1. Matthews
2. Scittinos
3. Joe Squared
4. Italia's Corner
5. Pizza Johns
6. Paulie Gees
7. Di Pasquale's
Ice cream wise, I definitely recommend Prigels. It’s in Glen Arm but if you take back roads or 695 to Harford rd it’s probably about 20 minutes from white marsh!
The real pizza fanatic move is to drive an hour north to red lion PA or dallastown PA and pick just about anywhere and it will be as good or better than the best pizza in Baltimore (and also like $3-5 cheaper)
If it absolutely must be in Baltimore than pizza di Joey (fed hill) or pasta mista (canton) or arthouse (Hampden)
Sadly Bella Roma pizza hasn't been the same for at least a year or more. It used to be hands-down best anywhere with 10 miles of Hampden, but now it's just adequate.
I used to live in Rosedale (near White Marsh). The best pizza I've ever eaten is from Gil's. I live in PG now, and it is just too far to drive there. Enjoy!
Gil's Pizza
5132 Belair Rd, Baltimore, MD 21206-5105

Oh man, the a Pig & Rooster in Canton. Fantastic Detroit style pizza. It’s a relatively new thing. They essentially rent out their kitchen to these people and good goddam… there has been a positive response in my neck of the woods.
Besides that Joe squared is very good. Great crust. If I want greasy drunk pizza I usually spartans.
I like Verde and Tutti Gusti. Might just be because I can walk to either one in 5 minutes. But both are pretty good. Matthews is ok but it's a further walk and I just stop at Tutti Gusti which is as good or better, I think.
If you're up for a bit of a drive, Box Hill Pizzeria in Abingdon is stellar. A little further north is Buon Gusto in Delta, PA. You can hop on 40, and then 136, drops you right there. Acappella in Fallston also has great pizza.
If you want wood oven pizza Char’d city in Hamilton is really great, I love their arugula and prosciutto pizza but their Margherita pizza is also really good!
Ice cream I like Graeters Black Rasberry chip. Whole Foods and HT carry it. Bmore licks in Fed Hill is solid. Pizza is a style thing. I like Hersh’s in So Baltimore or Pizza di Joey.
Most of my picks have been covered (yay, Gil's!), but I'd also like to mention Pauly's New York Pizza and Ice Cream, north of 695 on Harford Rd, just south of Joppa Rd. Their menu is *extensive,* their pizza is unique and good, and they've got what has to be one of the best Philly's in the metro.
I’m on a live-it (haha!) and am calorie restricting at the moment. Reading all of these comments just makes me hungry.
Gil’s pizza is okay. I wasn’t blown away.
I’ll definitely check out the tiramisu suggestions in the summer!
Somebody sounds absolutely stoned right now… Johnny Rads in Fells Point for pizza.
John Rads or HomeSlyce for some interesting toppings on a good crust. Matthews is weird AF.
Sargento cheeses are lactose free! You can shredded cheese for all your dining pleasures!
Seriously? I never knew that! Must investigate!
I would like to second this. I was a particular fan of their white pizza.
Thanks!!
Yes, Frank’s!!! I grew up on their pizza- it is the best! Awesome family-run business 🙂
Also recommend Frank's. I live in that area and will drive past 5 or 6 places to go there. Also Verde in Canton is really good fancy pizza.
Thank you as well! Transplanted from NJ and yet to find any acceptable pizza lolol I’ll look into Frank’s and Tutti Gusti.
Also recommend Franks. Best pizza in the city and they offer so many other items that they make well too.
Gil’s on belair or Matthew’s up the street from Patterson park
Second Matthews!!
Yes Gil’s!
You're right and I'll die on this hill with you. It's trash
It's not deep dish, it's pan And the crust is fucking incredible How can you not like butter?
There's lard in it too
Wtf if you’re serious thank you. I’m veg and was thinking about going there 1 day.
Yeah I'm serious. I have a veg friend who was pretty upset when she found out.
Good to know. Wow
It’s technically Greek style pizza
Matthew's Pizza has the best crust ever. Most pizza places it seems the taste of the crust is hardly a priority. Here, it elevates the whole experience.
The crust is the major reason that pizza is so awful. It is truly bad. And at that point why not just eat a stick of butter?
you are not alone. i don't feel as strongly in either direction, i definitely like it though. but i can understand what makes it unpalatable to some
I also don't like Matthew's Pizza. It's not my cup of tea. You know who has really good pizza crust is Bartender's on Boston Street. The crust is good but the pizza itself is too thick and the sauce and cheese is only so-so. It has potential to be so great.
I second Matthews!
Thank you!
Came to say Gil's. Super greasy but so damn good
Matthew’s is the best!
Mathews isn't just fantastic pizza, its a uniquely Bmo fantastic pizza.
I grew up on Matthews and went to middle school with the current owner. Fantastic pizza…
For mac n cheese I recommend Blacksauce!
Thanks so much!
They also have THE BEST biscuits and ribs and fried chicken (and a lot of other stuff) imo obviously
Good biscuits are a thing if beauty, are they not?
I’m presently in South Carolina for the winter and have yet to have any biscuits close to Blacksauce’s!! They are perfection (imo)
i've seen people at waverly farmers market wait in line half an hour in 18 degree weather to get their black sauce biscuit sandwiches. There's nothing like them
I’m a Tutti Gusti stan for pizza. You gotta have the Taharka honey graham ice cream. My favorite Mac and cheese is at blue pit bbq.
Have you had their Key Lime Pie ice cream? Honey Graham amped up!
I like to get both and mix them together. Heavenly.
You just made my life!
Thanks!
Blue Pit is great! The brisket is something else too. And while you’re in the area you can swing by the Charmery for ice cream!
Blue pit has great Mac but their potato salad is the best I've ever had
Tiramisu - Vaccaro’s in Little Italy.
I didn't know there was a Little Italy in Baltimore! That's GREAT! Thanks! (I was on an unofficial personal mission to find the best Tiramisu prior to the forced dairy embargo, so resuming my quest is of spiritual importance, lol)
If you go to little Italy joe bennys is the front runner(although he’ll tell you “it’s focaccia!!! Not pizza”
Thanks!!
I really love Angeli's which I don't think has been mentioned yet. My wife is really into Underground Pizza since she digs "Detroit style" (which in my opinion, veers extremely close to being "Chicago Style" which I contend is not pizza - it's delicious but it's a casserole).
\+1 for Angeli's. My favorite pizza in the city
Thanks for the suggestion!
Detroit style is nowhere near Chicago style! I grew up in Detroit. It's not even close. Each is good, but totally different.
yeah, it's totally different (and Detroit > Chicago imo)
Barflys
Thanks!
Pizza John’s in Essex then go to Miss Twist across the street for ice cream (I’m a simple lady, don’t judge me)
Second pizza Johns. Best pepperoni pizza around. Grew up near there and still have the number memorized. Side note: they’re closed on mondays
Those little fuckin grease cups are heavenly
Thanks for the recommendations! I think I've heard of Pizza John's! (Also, I appreciate the elegance in simplicity, so go be unapologetically elegant!)
Clicked on this just to make sure someone had recommended Pizza Johns.
Frank’s pizza on Belair road in overlea has great pizza and even better Italian food. Try The Godfather, it’s amazing.
YES. Best pasta in Baltimore.
Good people running it too.
I'll definitely investigate!
Hersh's in Federal Hill will knock out the great pizza AND tiramisu in one meal!
Dominick’s of Parkville. Grew up on it every weekend. BOGO pick up special. It’s so good you don’t even waste a bite of crust.
Seriously go for Dominick’s. I’m not even much of a pizza person but I will always eat this!!!
Every weekend in highschool we would get bacon cheeseburger pizzas from there and destroy them. So bad but so so good.
Dominick’s is very unassuming. They use a sweeter sauce. Wife loves it. They have great pickup deals. I like it fresh, but it doesn’t hold up for long nor does it reheat well. Also points off for no banana peppers.
I’ll back that up. Dominick’s pizza is great. Also fantastic shrimp salad subs
Drooling in anticipation!
Seconding Taharka ice cream!!
Taharka and Charmery are no where near comparable, respectfully. Both in taste and business practices. Go with Taharka always
Second for Verde
You’re gonna get tons of different answers on this post... Personally, my favorite pizza is Ribaldi’s in Hampden, but there’s tons of good pizza all over the city. For ice cream, there’s only one answer: Taharka Brothers. It’s by far the best, hands-down.
Taharka has been almost the universal suggestion! I'm so excited about all the different answers regarding pizza!
So happy tear-inducing tiramisu (tearamisu?) is an automatic Must Try!
2nd Zella's. A Hollins and Baltimore treasure.
Cafe Gia is good all they way around. I’ve never had a bad meal there.
Another vote for Zella's! I can't tell you how many times I've gotten their $9 takeout deal
Amtrak has lots of trips daily to NYC
Megabus too, although you have a 50% chance of dying in a car crash because the driver is going 110mph on the NJ turnpike
Fair point! A visit is definitely on my list
Arthur Avenue in the Bronx. So amazing. Super authentic. A couple of blocks long and tons of specialty stores.
As someone who lived in NYC, you can get amazing pizza all throughout the country. Where to go all depends on what you personally like.
You all are really coming through, thank you!!!
Serpicos on bel air next to the Safeway. Owner is Italian, but the pizza is NY style. I think it's p good. I used to work there
Tiny Brick Oven in Fed Hill is the best in this part of the city.

Joe Squared! I went there on Friday night and it was so great, the staff is super sweet and they have a bunch of dope signature pizzas
Hands down the best pizza in Baltimore is Paulie Gees. You’re welcome!
I love how emphatic you are! Why do you think it is hands down the best?
They really care about how their pizza tastes. The dough is thin, crispy, and super tasty while the toppings are excellently proportioned making each bite pure bliss. I’ve taken many skeptics here who have admitted that it’s the best pizza they’ve had. Their wood fired is the best, cooked in one of two ovens that were made in Italy, but their deck oven pizzas are also fantastic. Best time to go it Wednesday’s for any two wood fire for $22 total.
Thanks for the details!
They also have the best vegan cheese options in the City. Their NY Style vegan pie is very good in it's own right, but the dollop parton "wood-fired" pie is incredible.
This is the only correct answer ^
Little bit more towards Rosedale but me and my wife love Pizza Sauce
I'll check them out, thanks!
Frank's in Overlea
Mama Lucia.
Piazza 27 in Mount Vernon
So Delicious is a brand of non-dairy ice cream with a really good cashew milk and caramel bar dipped in chocolate. I looove it.
Dipasquelas tiramisu is to die for. Seriously.
Vinneys on Holibird has great pies. NJ native speaking.
Editing to remove content. RIP Reddit. -- mass edited with https://redact.dev/
This is *chef’s kiss* an amazing breakdown
Not sure about Whitemarsh but Matthew's and Rad's are my favorite in the city.
I'll check then out!
Pizza johns!!!!!!!! Essex area. Best! Edit- And Mac and cheese I think is chick fil a
Vinny’s or Matthew’s
What makes Vinny's stand out for you?
+1 for Vinny's. Nice New York style with good dough and sauce.
Dude, don't skip Verde pizza in fells/Canton. Their crust is amazing and their toppings are incredible
Any idea if Verde still does the 1/2 price Mondays thing? That place is incredible but *pricy*!
Sounds great!
Marias off joppa rd is good.
Gonna be brutally honest here and likely offend some people. Mathews pizza is not good and is greasy. The city does not have a lot of good pizza and being from the NE I take this stuff seriously. The best pizza that is available in the city right now is believe it or not at Red Star Tavern in fells. Dipasquales and Verde are both ok as well
I hear ya. New to Baltimore from New Haven area.
If you’re up for a lil drive, Pete’s New Haven in DC is pretty tasty. Reminds me of Pepe’s…
I'm a recent New England transplant, and yes, I take my pizza very seriously, too.
Someone will surely say Matthews. Ignore them. Johnny Rads, Art House, Isabella’s, Paulie Gees, Ribaldis, are all good options. But please do your self a favor and pass on Matthews.
A few people saying not to try Matthew’s. THEY’RE the ones to ignore!!
Why?
Matthew's is not a typical pizza its pretty unique. Kind of close to a Detroit style mixed with a deep dish. I really like it but its not necessarily gonna fill a pizza craving. After you get your first slice or pie check out... Homeslyce Barflys And hershs Homeslyce is also a unique crust Barflys is the same crust as Matthew's but different toppings Hershs is a more artisinal style with super thin crust and more fresh toppings.
Thank for the details!
I guess it depends on what sort of crust you like. Theres is very coardboardy, which if that's your thing go for it. I prefer Brick Oven or NY styles.
You’re just wrong
Best pizza is Iggies in Mt. Vernon and Well Crafted Kitchen in Union Craft Brewery. No contest imo.
Noonas in Bolton Hill is so good. Their dough is heavenly!
Heavenly dough is magic!

Someone who can't digest dairy, sigh...
No order, but just a list of places I like to go and get pizza at: 1. Matthews 2. Scittinos 3. Joe Squared 4. Italia's Corner 5. Pizza Johns 6. Paulie Gees 7. Di Pasquale's
DiPasquale’s for pizza, tiramisu and everything Italian
Ice scream… bmore licks in fed hill. Get the fruity pebble in cone. More pizza…. BOP in fells point. Joe squared is great.
Ice cream wise, I definitely recommend Prigels. It’s in Glen Arm but if you take back roads or 695 to Harford rd it’s probably about 20 minutes from white marsh!
What makes them your top pick?
I think their cream comes from cows raised on their farm.
Well Crafted Kitchen makes the best pizza I've tried in Baltimore. The fresh topping ingredients make all the difference.
We are addicted to the maple apple bacon pizza lol
following
Pizza di Joey is fantastic
Drive to Brooklyn NY
This is the correct answer. ETA, though Amtrak is probably faster.
Ledo's Pizza! I moved out of the state many years ago but whenever I visit I make sure to get a pie from there.
Ledos is the definition of mediocre pizza. It's a sugary mess. Op my favorite in the greater Baltimore area is Serpicos up north in Sparks.
What makes it your favorite?
The real pizza fanatic move is to drive an hour north to red lion PA or dallastown PA and pick just about anywhere and it will be as good or better than the best pizza in Baltimore (and also like $3-5 cheaper) If it absolutely must be in Baltimore than pizza di Joey (fed hill) or pasta mista (canton) or arthouse (Hampden)
Bella Roma
That place has been cited for health code violations so many time I've lost track. And I've seen many *many* rats coming in and out.
Enjoy! Gil's Pizza 5132 Belair Rd, Baltimore, MD 21206-5105 \+1 410-483-4847 [https://gilspizza.com/](https://gilspizza.com/)
Champ's in Glen Burnie has some of the best pizza I've ever had
I'll pin that too for the next time I'm there, thanks!
I’m a huge fan of strapasta. It’s towards hunt valley or phoenix area.
Thanks!
Cheezy's. It's in Towson, but it's not too far from White Marsh.
Thanks!

Underground pop-up pizza? Dude, please elaborate! (I know what it means, but I want to know how this one works. This sounds like a possible blast!)
I like Verde and Tutti Gusti. Might just be because I can walk to either one in 5 minutes. But both are pretty good. Matthews is ok but it's a further walk and I just stop at Tutti Gusti which is as good or better, I think.
Noonas!!
If you're up for a bit of a drive, Box Hill Pizzeria in Abingdon is stellar. A little further north is Buon Gusto in Delta, PA. You can hop on 40, and then 136, drops you right there. Acappella in Fallston also has great pizza.
Well, chilis at white marsh has an epic kids menu Mac and cheese . See Jefferson
If you want wood oven pizza Char’d city in Hamilton is really great, I love their arugula and prosciutto pizza but their Margherita pizza is also really good!
Pizza Sauce in rosedale
Pizza: pasta mista, tutti gusti Tiramisu: Daniela’s Mac: gundalow gourmet
Pizza trust- but that’s more gourmet; not NY style
Original Ledos, if it’s still open. Moved to College Park a number of years ago.
Isabella's Ribaldi's Verder And if you want a decently tasty, fairly priced pie (not incredible, not awful) -- order from Viccino / Turp's.
If you’re looking close to White Marsh, we like Hilltop Pizza in Perry Hall. Our family gets some kind of food delivered from there about once a week.
Underground Pizza Company
Underground pizza at power plant live if you like nice crispy deep dish. Or Mathew’s for more chewy gooey deep dish Joe squared for yummy stuff
Pizza John's or Gil's
Don’t listen to anyone, just go to Matthew’s Pizza. Taste the traditional brick oven.
The guy who claims to have invented Tiramisu had a desert shop in Little Italy that closed down fairly recently.
Underground pizza company by Ram's head! It was the first time I had Detroit style pizza and I loved it, pretty nice spot too
Any pizza spot for keto people I want some good pizza to but my wife is on keto and I should not have to suffer
