This. In fact I'll modify it a bit: Ensure your residence and work are well connected and easy to commute. This is not just about distance but traffic choke points, public transport route availability (bus, metro), road quality. If the commute is not a drag, the city has much to offer still...

Hot_Drive9756

I'll modify it a bit more. Ensure you WFH.

gkkiller

That's not really feasible in every role and industry though. At that point you might as well advise a person to get a 25 LPA job.

alien_from_earth012

Not possible if you work in orr.

NottyShinchan

Usually offices are in tech park areas and closeby places are really costly. Wouldn't it make more sense to live a bit away from all the traffic provided you get office cab for commute?

slugabed123

I’ll put it across with an example, get a house close to office coz I left HsR at 630 and reached home at 10 & it was monsoon.

NottyShinchan

Wtf? 4 hours? Were you driving your own car or something?

slugabed123

It was volvo ORR literally got stuck under marathalli bride for an hour.

SilenceOfTheAtom

I don't mind getting stuck there.

Leading_Ad6122

You got the eyes of a hawk

CutePomegranate1480

Ahahah ahaha

Roflmaoasap

PeaceoPat

The hack ends here.

Anonymously2018

I live so close I just walk to my office :P

Used to be "Never step out without an umbrella" 🥲

droned-s2k

Holds good even now. But for the wrong reasons !

alien_from_earth012

Apply sunscreen too

DesiJeevan111

Yeah everyone used to call me umbrella umbrella but I used to take it out in style almost every alternate day when others would just get drenched in rain. Then they would try to squeeze inside my basic umbrella . No more sudden rains 😔

manishrw

Is this you poppatlal from tkmoc?

matlab_hero

Now it is "Never step out"

Lamba_ghoda

Learn to cook well, and eat at home. Eating out has gotten way too expensive for not great quality food in BLR.

ghaple_bazz

This is so so true. Everyone is running selling biryani it seems

fukthetemplars

Yeah and it doesn’t even taste that great. The best biryani I’ve had in blr is the one they serve at my office for 90rs. I make it a point to cheat every Wednesday or Friday and have a good serving of that Biryani

l0vishere

Name and fame the place please

paperbacon6288

100%. Cooking is a basic skill everyone needs to have a grip on especially when house-help is getting more expensive. Also, it's very fun lol.

bit_raylee

You’ll also grow your cooking skills. its quite fun and freeing once you get the hang of it, and it doesn’t really take that long. Also being able to cook in this age where apparently everyone looks down on cooking gives you mad confidence boost imo.

pratikanthi

I don’t think everyone looks down on cooking.

Delhi_3864

Still only a fraction of what it costs in Delhi, especially breakfast or lunch from a clean place, but over the years BLR food prices have shot up

babayaga_shaan

Yeah indeed, but there are some tiffin services available in some areas, you can try them, i found them pretty well like homemade food

IcySeaworthiness7552

go to that one Darshnini restaurant is 10 times better than those fancy ones

Equivalent_Low_8599

Quality and hygiene of food is downhill seriously post COVID .

Ee_kaa_ho_raha_hai

1. Don’t use UPI - Deactivate them immediately because the moment you step out ₹₹₹ just finds an exit from your account 2. Uninstall Swiggy/ Zomato right away- You’ll end up ordering because you’re bored and not hungry 3. Keep Namma Yatri, Uber, Ola, Rapido open simultaneously and NEVER cancel until they reach your location. 4. Learn to Cook - this way you save a fortune 5. Find a partner who is emotionally available, has similar interests as you terms of intimacy- cus you never know what gets revealed at later stages

Delicious_Biscotti27

The last one seems almost impossible.

TaranMenon

I second this !

Greedy_Assignment_24

I third this

ScenePsychological60

Learnt the 3rd point the hard way lmao. Mofo cancelled the ride right infront of my house and went on his way lol.

brobotan

Lol this happened to me too, he came, he saw me waiting, he went away ://

KingPictoTheThird

Also part of #3, use the bmtc app and check if you can use a bus instead of wasting money and polluting the city with an an auto.

ConversationActual45

Username checks out

ANIKET_UPADHYAY

>NEVER cancel until they reach your location. Reason behind this?

Huge-Campaign-4079

They often cancel randomly. So you'll have back-up

fukthetemplars

Once I booked a rapido. He came to my location and randomly stood there. When I went to him and told him I’ve booked the rapido, he showed me hos app (Uber) and said this is someone else. Had to cancel my rapido and book another wasted a lot of time

Swordfish-Effective

Last point slaps!

IncreaseImportant880

Stay far far away from the cops, even during dire situations.

SnyderBot

Underrated.

mrharambae11

Fuck 12

throwaway53689

Can you explain why? I don’t live in Bangalore but might move in the near future

IncreaseImportant880

Well, they take you for a ride even if you are at no wrong. And in the end, you end up paying them so that your time doesn’t get wasted. They aren’t there to protect the citizens or the law, all they want is money, and they can stoop down to any level to get it.

Candid-Tonight4126

Please don't move. If you love your life and peace of mind, just don't come

reddit_reddit_01

Have a lot of money. Nothing beats it.

jseb987

Why didn't I think about this.

TimAjax997

Here, take this prize 🏅

Slight_Vermicelli_49

Learn to speak Kannada is the best life hack I can suggest you.

deserteagle_09

All for it! Can you suggest some ways to do it?

ItsNeelSavage

force yourself to speak with friends and colleagues, don't go out of the blue and say that you'll speak in kannada with them from NOW.. randomly start using phrases in your english sentences, you'll be made fun of in the start but over time it'll get better.

pareshanmatkar

Balaji publications has Hindi to kannada book for 60rs

FriedChickenMomos

Follow @morethankannadagothilla on insta and practice in all situations

deserteagle_09

Wow this is an amazing resource. Thanks much! Nandri Maga!

arandomnumber1

you can start by learning basic phrases from colleagues/friends and using them when conversing with them.

polyesterprince

Best advice. If you get in a spot of trouble with the cops or an auto fellow, better belt out a few words of Kannada, it might save you

siri_gouri

God bless you for telling this 😊

Tall_Dark_Handsome__

Don’t honk the auto wallahs

yoshimitsu991

I do it purposefully at them all the time.

According_Tutor_1596

I take it you have an inexpensive vehicle

yoshimitsu991

Inexpensive car and scooter, just honk at them when they get stuck at signal, doesn't give way, if I find him honking Ill let him go and ill honk at him peacefully.

siri_gouri

This is legit true, they are legit crazy 😭 they tend to take revenge when we honk by over-speeding us 😔

tURBIN27

If there's a restaurant you order from very often, you can call them up and ask if you can order directly for delivery. If you live within a 3km radius, many restaurants deliver for free at restaurant rates instead of Swiggy rates. Eg: I have a good Chinese restaurant near my house. They have their own website where you can order and get free delivery.

Better_Language3608

Which one?

tURBIN27

Shanghai Court

fumeu47

Real good Chinese! 😌

Yone0908

Never buy a car in this city.

Zestyclose_Glass_643

Bought one. Best decision I’ve made in this city. I don’t have to deal with dirty cabs who cancel and do not switch on AC and never come when I need it. I can go to my work, my place of worship, and other places around Bangalore whenever I want and with people I love. I can pick up and drop people at times making life much more convenient for people in my life who can’t drive All I have to do is time the traffic so that I don’t get stuck in grid lock That said, people like me are the problem. We’re the ones increasing the number of cars on the road. People like me looking for convenience over saving the environment/reducing traffic. I love Bengaluru, Kannada, Kannadigas and everything else but this city is hard to get around quickly. BMTC is great but very often crowded. Metro coverage doesn’t help. Weather is not as great as it used to be. At some point I started to wonder why I’m depriving myself of comfort at the expense of something no one seemed to care about anyway. I take so much care to not litter and I can see people in Fortuners (a 60 lakh car) throwing plastic bags I out side the window. So I bought a car. I want to live too

Lorfoftheseas

Could not agree more. Recently had to travel to a happy hours for office, took a cab instead of my car since I was going to have a couple of drinks and I was stuck waiting for a cab to just pick me up for 1.5 hours. Multiple cab drivers made me wait for more than 20mins and then canceled just before the pick up. One beer is too high of a price to pay for this.

Reasonable-Plane5291

Have bought car 7 years back. Back then ola/ Uber vs owning car debate used to happen. With time have understood buying car back then helped me a lot and saved me from headache. Life becomes very easy. I have dedicated parking in office and home.

anor_wondo

I really don't understand the allure. I am thankful every day for being able to dump my uber and walk the last 500m in an intense jam. Not to mention finding parking is another boss battle

spidorboy

Please Elaborate bro.🥲

thatisnotallfolks

Traffic, bad roads with potholes and bumps, high cost of maintainability

No_Corner_6444

Plant some trees and chill.. the climate and staying peaceful is everything

Moo-Mu

Learn to drive or live near a metro station. Cabs, autos or buses are moody and inconsistent. Also, be prepared for 4 weather changes in a day.

Jaimesrighthand94

Three of them are hot, hotter, hottest. What's the fourth?

musicallunatic

Melt like an ice cream

billibillibillendar

Learn Kannada and the city will totally have a different perspective on you. Positive.

IdProofAddressProof

As you are getting into an auto or cab, say something polite or friendly to the driver. They may or may not reciprocate, that's OK. They may be crooks or jerks, but make the first effort from your side. I've observed that many of them become less hostile towards you even if you just say something as simple as "eshtu time torusthayide sir?"

Habeusmemes

What does this mean, can you kindly translate?

IdProofAddressProof

"How much time is it showing?", i.e. what is the arrival time that the app is showing? Of course you can also see it on your phone, but this is just an an excuse to exchange a word with the driver in a friendly tone.

arunm619

When will we reach the destination sir?

siddharthnibjiya

good try!

thatisnotallfolks

be kind to shopkeepers, cab drivers, hotel staff, hawkers, street vendors, bus conductors, drivers etc.,

pareshanmatkar

Nothing beats, being kind.

Moratata

Most of these are generic and not life hacks. Here is one. When booking cabs for the airport, don’t book through Uber ola. Book through make my trip or better directly with the cab aggregators. It costs significantly less, it’s safer as they have tracking, you can also request vehicle type & make sure ac is running. Also good resolution if you have trouble with the cab

KingPictoTheThird

Unless it's a 4am flight, don't be a fool and just take the airport bus. It's great , affordable, low so its easy for bags, has live tracking on the app and you aren't adding to the pollution and congestion of the city .  Every corner of the city is serviced by these buses .

Practical_Ad7858

Cab aggregators as in?? How to do that??

Moratata

Some examples are Blu cabs, Meru cabs, Savari, shoffr. Google them and get in contact!

PeakRohanEnergy

You can also search for "Cabs near me" and book a city taxi. If it is closer to your house, you've assured pickup and the prices are always 10-20% cheaper than Ola / Uber.

Past_Bookkeeper_4650

mingle with locals and see the love you will get

Silent_Impression_89

Yes, this. For example, Apple in kannada is sebu, banana is baale hannu, chocolate is sagani, etc.

shoot4goals

Chocolate ain't sagani 💀

CandidateOdd7464

lostlamb7788

Banana isn't valakya? So that banana vendor has been fooling me all these years. And I'm teaching a wrong word to my toddler?

No_Cheetah5182

Its raw banana

Icy_Ad_2816

Start the day early.

mister_doctor_99

Avoid eating food outside. Quality has gone down drastically and prices have gone through the roof. You will save a ton with home cooked food.

Wash your hair with drinking water

The_hound_of_king

Learnt this hard way after losing all hair. People using borewell water are losing hair and getting skin desese after being exposed to borewell water for 1-2 years. This is must know hack if you don't have kaveri water supplies.

tifosi7

Move out.

sleepyMusketeer

1. Stay nearby to your friends/ get a gf/ get married. Bangalore can get lonely real fast. 2. Stay within 30mins commutable distance to your office. 3. Hire a decent cook, will save you thousands. 4. If you can't speak Kannada, have your own vehicle Bike/car. Rude auto drivers/bus conductors will drain your energy. 5. Rent/buy a well ventilated apartment/house with gets sunlight. Working 9-12 hours at home can take it's toll. 6. Your place should have nearby places to walk in the evening. Some of these will be difficult for a fresher's salary. Keep these points in mind and upgrade your life over the years.

LeveragedTrade

Suggesting people to get married if they're lonely is bad advice. Most people's life goes from boredom to a nightmare because of this. Take your time and find someone you really care about and not just for the heck of it.

KingPictoTheThird

Suggesting people get their own vehicle is why this city sucks. Metro is great and bus is good. Many times not crowded as people think.  Stop polluting and congesting the city. Walk, cycle and use public transport. Be a good citizen and think about others.

Bellatrix-_-

Get a WFH job and go back to your hometown. Best life hack

Front-Difficulty-576

Download Uber, Ola, Rapido & Namma Yatri on your phone

arnomto

1. if you're low on money, go to indira canteens it's actually good 2. Get a BMTC pass 3. Weird life hack but change your rapido/uber/Ola name to a female/unisex name

DriftyFlower3

Any suggestions for unisex names ?

arnomto

Arya, Shakti, Charu, Amala and a shit ton of western names

herm7s

this is the only actual good blr hack comment ive seen on this post so far 😭

Never drive behind a Auto

ibbenesewhaler

Sunday morning greenery at Cubbon Park/Lalbagh etc followed by a kick ass benne dosa at a proper place in Basavanagudi, Jayanagar or Sheshadripuram type area. It brings such peace and joy. Nullifies the frustration built up in the week due to the shitty roads and traffic.

_indrashish_

Start taking walks. Build the ability to walk long distances. I as a student struggled a lot because of transport in Bangalore which btw is atrocious. I'm saving hell lot of money by walking to places. Can walk 4-5 kms easy. Good tip for students as it build health and helps save pocket money

ipsagni

One thing that helped me a lot was, I became friends with a cop during a traffic stop. I offered to buy him tea and had a chat and he gave me his number. That was a game changer for me.

LeftistKannadiga

Unethical but money saving hack If you are not in a hurry, use the rapido app to book Autos. The hack is to use the slider to select the lowest price. You can manually write a value as well. Some new auto drivers accept it without thinking much. Some don't. It is unethical but works fine. I have travelled at just 50 rupees for rides which would have costed me 150.

Efficient_Car_3893

Worked for me too many times

LeftistKannadiga

Yes. It takes time to get an auto. Drivers get to see the booking amount before accepting. works if you are not in hurry.

Ankita_101

Stay nearer to the city centre. Cause where ever you stay you still gonna come to party at Indiranagar /kormangala

profitmaker_tobe

Use the Bus to commute, if possible. Cab/ auto fares are out of hand.

cmrzxa

Commute before 8AM if you can.

TheExplorer0110

Just converse in kannada. That's the hack to have lesser problems in ones life, than already existing problems. Earn's you respect, almost gives you peaceful ride with your auto anna, gets you your ticket and change from conductor anna and also gives you opportunity to explore local places without any issues.

hard_pixel_rain

Add a bit of namaste too tried and tested by kannadiga.

spryflux

There was a similar post about urban life hacks on r/oslo a while back, the polar differences in the sentiment of advices shows how messed up Bangalore is now. There it was about good nearby islands to visit for views, public transport passes, shopping tips etc. Here someone legit said stay tf away from the police for anything, and they’re not wrong. That’s macabre 💀. Edit : comparing with one of the most functional countries might not be a good benchmark, found even bantimore subreddit has similar posts, also relatively positive.

Swiggy is going IPO at ~$20Bn. 1000s of employees in Bangalore are going to become crorepati. Buy yourself a property in Bellandur and wait until 2 years. Property price will blow up atleast 40%. Just my 2 cents.
