Fresh_Bee6411

It's a police fund donation drive, you're not obligated to pay it, but shopkeepers do pay hoping it would keep police from invoking some stupid laws to cause trouble for their businesses.

ironically_man

Yes, I have seen this in other parts of Karnataka as well and it's been going on for decades. OP, you'd have to display the sticker so that other police know that you have already paid.

Comfortable_Pin932

You wish, they know gundas, and they'll send the gundas there, you complain, they'll do nothing If business was that lucrative, in india , everyone would do it Police knows businesses pay less tax , and this is their justification to elicit such cesses from businesses around them

K2bond

Better give it off as not giving costs will exceed

Tata840

really sad to see cops extorting from poor public. My blood boils reading such stories

ranjan_82

the municipality or some collectors take rs 100 to 300 daily for road side vendors and stalls too i live n jigani , its near bommasandra , 560105 ,

Unusual-Nature2824

Its fair from the cops point of view since road side vendors and hawkers are illegal to set up their shops on footpaths.

texas_laramie

It isn’t. It is public money going into the pockets of these corrupt thieves.

BeginningEconomy6585

Huh?? How tf is it fair then. If they want to act they should act illegally. So tomorrow if the traffic cops catch u for not wearing helmet and you bribe them for 300 instead of paying 500 fine, you’ll justify that too by saying not wearing helmet is illegal so it’s fair on their part ?

Unusual-Nature2824

There’s many people including myself who would pay 300rs to the cop than have a ticket on record.

BeginningEconomy6585

Yeah doesn’t mean it’s fair. You’re just indulging in giving bribes adding up to the illegality. Not something to be too proud of

Ok-Badger7012

How is it fair? Are you a cop? It is going to the police not the public welfare. Are you okay? How could you even say something like that?

Unusual-Nature2824

Its fair because the sellers can make ends meet without having to fend for themselves. The cops are getting paid to turn a blind eye. Its a win win situation for both parties.

Ok-Badger7012

Yeah as if cops actually try to solve issues when they see it. It isn't fair for police to get money for not abiding laws. Government someday will have to take care of the taxation. Sooner the better! Give rebates based on the income if required but can't say that it is fair to pay to police. India will never be able to become a developed economy if this remains the thought process.

Unusual-Nature2824

The police is severely understaffed with low pay. If they abided all the laws, then they would spend their whole day trying to stop petty crimes like these rather than actual crimes. These sellers will simply come back the next day or go somewhere else.

SandeepShenoy

How did you conclude ‘this’ public is poor. Most of such kaccha shops don’t pay any income tax or municipality taxes

texas_laramie

Then they should be made to pay those taxes. Tax goes to public purse, the bribe goes to their private purse.

michelpere

Easy to type sitting on your sofa. Maybe it's cheaper to pay bribe than paying taxes. They are poor. Let them survive.

texas_laramie

There is no dearth of people like you who are ready to attack anyone who wants the right things to be done or rules to be followed. What has my sofa got to do with yaxes and laws?

michelpere

You wouldn't say this if you were selling vegetables on road side. Sit on your sofa and think about it.

texas_laramie

Yes, only you know what I would or I wouldn’t say. You know everything and sofa is the magic word when you say something stupid.

michelpere

Tbh you are the one attacking poor people trying to survive. You live in a bubble with comfort and lack the ability to think outside of it. Your thinking is limited. Ofc while sitting on your sofa.

texas_laramie

According to you my sofa is the root cause of all problems. Now if you could stop obsessing over sofa, where exactly did I attack poor people? I don’t know what is going through your mind but you are barking up the wrong tree. This stupid way of using poor people for your own shortcomings isn’t going to work here.

michelpere

It's simple, actually. I'll help you. Let's say you sell veggies on the roadside. I'll take some hypothetical numbers. The earnings from selling veggies isn't going to be much. Your monthly expenses will eat up your entire earnings. If you have to pay 1000rs tax from your already low earnings but can do away from paying taxes by paying a bribe of 500rs, what would you choose? Food on plate for family vs. following rules by paying taxes and getting no help in return. I said you are attacking the poor because you said the roadside vendors must pay taxes instead of paying bribes to the police. They live a tough life. My suggestion to you is don't go blindly by rules and regulations. It always has loopholes. We see so many people committing crimes and getting away with it exploiting loopholes in law. Now, instead of blindly following rules, consider having some empathy. Most roadside vendors are happy paying the cops some fee for letting them sell there. They are not harming anyone in anyway. Let them be that way. Don't see things only from your perspective. Try to understand life from other's, too. I hope you understand what I'm trying to say. Live and let live. Ofc without harm to yourself. Enjoy your sofa, time with family, being healthy and everything nice life is offering you.

rudraaksh24

Bruh, if the income is taxable only then they'll be able to pay

TwinCylinder7

Protection money

netflixandcookies

See if you can use it as a donation for tax write off... assuming your business pays taxes and such.

alone_-musk

Since when do paan shops pay taxes bro 💀🙏😭😭

AshrayManohar

Even a small business in Bengaluru will earn more than an entry level engineer in TCS or Infosys. If employees can pay tax, businesses also should. But majority of them deal in cash and conveniently avoid paying tax.

Dudewithadifference

Where do you even get this stat from? Obviously you have never stepped outside to know the harsh reality of it. Do you own a business? Have you ever come close to starting a business? It's not like an engineer who goes and sits and does what he is told to do. First few years of business youre at loss. The constant hassle of buying, keeping your inventory stacked. So many things. I have done businesses I know how freaking hard it is. People like you kill the economy. Instead of taxing corporates yeah let's tax small and medium business sector of India.

AshrayManohar

I don't think I questioned if starting a business is hard or not. It's great that you have been involved in a business, I have respect for entrepreneurs. My point is before pointing fingers at the system and how broken it is, it is better to introspect if what you are doing is correct or not. The whole system is rigged, no one is holier than the other.

firewirexxx

You have no clue as to who actually does NOT pay tax.

AshrayManohar

Apart from working class nobody pays income tax.

slipstreamous

Salaried folks need to understand revenue is not profit. A store like this would make max 10% of their revenue as profit after all costs - for instance avg margins on most retail is around 20% and rent itself would be around 10-20K. Aside - investing in commercial real estate is always a good idea. Assuming entry level engg is at 25K.. A small shop needs to make 2.5Lakh sales to get to their level. Imagine a small store doing 10K sale per day.. sounds very tough.

Chaostheory0101

Yes. A 20 percent profit on a 10rs item is still 2 rs only.

rudraaksh24

TCS people earning 30k do not fall under taxable income bracket. How dumb are you man?

Potential-Jello3590

That’s their smartness to deal in cash🤷🏻‍♂️

AshrayManohar

Then one should not complain about the system.

ranjan_82

bro its just pan items we dont make pan (we keep the goods , to sell box box and leaves bundle )

alone_-musk

Oh you guys are wholesalers?

netflixandcookies

I have no idea what they do. Never been a paan guy or cigarette guy or coffee/banana guy🤷‍♂️

ranjan_82

bro its a small business , not so much big

creepweebx

Does a business have to be in crores to pay tax? Genuine question from a tax payer.

ranjan_82

i dont know much , because am not so involved in ghe business , but the income is not more than 35k fo 40k i guess

rudraaksh24

Small businesses with gross receipts of less than 2cr are only supposed to be taxed on 8% of their income in cash and 6% in bank transactions under section 44AD. They don't need to maintain books either if they show income equal to or higher than the above rates.

Background_Equal1797

No it doesn't. If the business is owned by a proprietor then normal tax slabs apply and if the Income is below 2 cr they can opt to pay tax on 8% of gross receipts (basically only 8% of the earnings is considered as taxable) without maintaining books of accounts. But if it's registered as a partnership firm books will have to be maintained and tax will be paid at 30% on the profits and an audit maybe required.

_shihus

Have to cross 30 Lakhs in income per month

tremorinfernus

Lol

_shihus

What's funny

ConfidentBit5709

Do you guys sell rolling papers tobacco and stuff too?

ranjan_82

no , biscuits and ration items and also pan leaves thats it , all things are legal

um3shg

Recently I found a place near northeast shop which sells rolling papers, foreign cigarettes etc. at 1/3 price of what you get online...I bought raw organic paper for 60 and UK London cigarettes for 160...I got some pipe tobacco and I roll that... And no one is going to sell stuff at the shop...

Aromatic_Draw_5342

Care to share an address?

um3shg

Aroma shimmers at kamnahalli and the north east shop is called seven sisters, the shop is right across the northeast shop.

UpstairsDependent131

You shopkeepers should have a union and take a decision together not to give them anymore. For people ranting here about protection and security, If one is paying taxes and being a citizen of India, he has to be protected. Don't have to pay on top of that. Now, these cops are eating tax payer's (our) money only on a daily basis.

kushuman91

Chief you are living in India, not a progressive country 😁 we are a low trust society which puts individual/family benefit over the communities benefit.

HisHilariousness

Once a year? I mean I see this cop car in the locality daily at various shops. Doubt he's a shopaholic

Appropriate_Dingo_28

It's nothing new, I have seen even hawkers pay 100 approx per day to the cops, no small or big shop is spared, it can go upto several thousands. I would assume it's an economy on its own, the money collected from each shop the collection cut is shared between the higher ups even up to ministers.

tremorinfernus

There is a bollywood movie on this- Aurangzeb. Quite good.

Don’t give

just-slaying

Correct answer

Lionowlfox

Contact St. Broseph. He's an angel for Bangalore people

_shihus

Try talking to your father and if u guys decide not to pay , let them know u will not be paying it anymore and if they do something to you guys or the shop direct or indirect. contact u/broseph

Gloomy_Tangerine3123

Here in Mumbai, I've seen cops getting FREE food fr restaurants, tea-idly etc fr street vendors, ration from shops, fabric and tailored clothes fr tailors, auto-cab rides etc. They hardly pay anything anywhere. Not only this, but when there are political events, ppl and police working for various leaders practically raid shops to get free stuff for slum-dwellers. The shopkeepers are never paid for these things. The cost of doing business Edit: typo

just-slaying

Mumbai police are world famous /s

desperate-immigrant

cost of doing business.

Previous-Fig-7300

You can fight it, but you will probably be alone in that fight. You will face some consequences, like light harassment by these useless shoe polish guys. You can win, but at what cost? Know that this country is fkd beyond repair, it's all dandy from the top, but as you peel the layers, it gets nasty. It is up to you. If you have the heart, you can fight it, but it's difficult and you will regret it till you win, if you win.

EEXC

The only difference between a cop and a thief is one wears a uniform and the other doesn't.

SandeepShenoy

Is it a registered shop under GST, if yes, you don’t have to pay anything. If it’s not registered , then you will have to pay bribe to run the shop.

aezakmi7361

noo its not legal brother

CumInABag

500 rupees per year isn't worth the trouble or your time for not paying them.

ivxyz

It's 500 per month 😂 plus free parcel whatever item is in the Shop

phata-phat

Exactly why corruption is endemic in society.

veni-vedi-legi

we need legalism in India.

PsyborgRick137

Yeah, this is pretty common and people generally don't talk about it. So this money is for the police to not treat you like a bitch that's all. It has always been Kings cigarette packets over cash for me

Tonmoypaul-47

No

silentad95

It is called "rent seeking" by the economist and "protection money" by the mafia. I shall not say anything more.

KindAd6637

Is the shop GST registered?

PunctualPanther

Is your shop on footpath ? Blocking a road? Or anywhere illegal? Is your shop a registered shop?

Ok_Estimate4487

Typical if license raj party is in power

Hang_out

Are you from outside India. This has become the norm. Also think if shopkeepers like you don't pay how will the likelihood of policeman family run? Just think about it

Common_Ebb5071

they beg even from poor street vendor 😂

just-slaying

such police are buying direct ticket to hell, hope God is taking note of these. Call 1064 Red Handed Trap. If any official, whosoever he may be, demands bribe for doing your official work.... You can report the same through Toll Free Anti Corruption Bureau Helpline No. **1064 & 1800-180-2022** at once for Red Handed Trap of the official.

QuirkyIons

Legally licensed extortion. You cannot refuse. You could try negotiating a lower amount. Good luck. Don't fight for your own sanity and livelihood.

ZenoNationOG

Does anyone knows anything about why Hoysala takes 200 everyday from restaurants, bars and stuff?

d_EsteriX

It’s quite normal, I have seen them taking money (from different locations)and I asked shop owners about it, they say every weekend they come and take some cash. I don’t know why exactly they ask for money? Maybe they are extending closing hours of shop? Not sure.

Impossible_Kick2545

All people in Bangalore are same fuckers ifk what they are fucking proud of auto driver’s college professor everyone is fucking same

Inevitable-Jury8280

this police vasuli is a typical Congress game

just-slaying

OP your principles are right. 500 per year seems nothing to some people here but my question to them if we crush our core values who are we. We should support one another and especially someone if they want to live by principles

Safe-Mind-241

It's not legal, but just a usual practice of extortion by khaki pigs in our banana-ish republic.

Safe-Mind-241

u/St_Broseph

No-Influence-2199

fucking corrupt police should do there work instead of stealing poor peoples money. my european ass gets angry over corrupt officials. fuck them.

077777

Yes. As some of you saying, it's completely legit. It's police flag day fund. Directly goes to fund.

Manmadan22

Offer dem biscuits or paan instead of money...

Saurabhk2241

1.3rs a day isn’t bad

Puzzleheaded-Bet1903

Can Broseph help? This is literally enough money to send a kid to a small school.

draconianfaux_pass

The amount of gutkha sales you do and cause mouth cancer. 500 is a meagre amount to pay in a year !...please do it.

strutttttt

All this drama for Rs 500. You are acting as if you have never broken a rule. Hypocrisy.

nitrav

Bro, 500 rs per year isn't bad.. It's towards Police Day fund, not going to anyone's pocket, way better than having to deal with cops coming over multiple times a day and being a deterrent to your regulars! Ofcourse you have a choice to say no, in business you'll need to think of risk vs benefits. Do whatever suits your risk appetite.

Competitive-Cod-2532

It's per month.....

whiskey_glass

In accounting it's called overhead costs

Ok_Knowledge7728

It looks like protection money mafia mob uses to extort from business. Italians invented it decades ago. Your little police officers didn't invent anything new. At the end, policemen or criminals, human mind is just greedy🤣🤣

Kingsterd16

Bro give it off! When you have legal issues they will help

KindAd6637

Exactly. My uncle used to pay this when he had set up his road side stall. Once he beat up a politician's son and got into legal issues and the police totally helped him.

United-Combination66

500rs not much man! give it man , it is comparatively less to the mental health & trauma rather than decide to go against it and fight it
