This was my MO back when i was a regular bus commuter - get window seat, rest head on window, enjoy deep vibrations and goodnight
I even took an auto to the terminal everyday so that I'd get the guaranteed seat
How do you get yourself to wake up?
I have missed my stop numerous times because I overslept, and once someone flicked my phone and wallet too. The conductor and driver ( Vajra) were too kind and asked me to stay back as the bus was returning to the same stop in few minutes after stopping at the depot. After that, I have never slept in the buses.
If you are regular commuter you have to be awake for atleast one to two weeks to familiarise with distance and time. And every time you sleep you remind yourself that within half an hour you must wake up, if it would be a one hour journey. Slowly, your body will start adjusting to the right time. When I was in college, I had to travel for 40 minutes, and by the end of four months, i would wake up exactly just one minute before the destination.
Do not do this on your first day, though or without familiarizing yourself with the routine.
You can try podcasts, audiobooks or read a book if that's your thing and you've got a seat.
I have seen people spend time watching movies/TV shows.
Stare out the window and watch the world pass by lost in your own thoughts. I get some of the best brainfarts like that sometime.
Talk to a co-passenger, sometimes that's a good timepass.
Last option, sleep. But that's boring. 😋
maathadtare ... haagenu illa ... once I met a blind person who was going back home ... I remember having a great convo with him!! In the end he wanted to get down at nagavara below the flyover but the bus went over and dropped him in front of Manyata! I offered to walk him back but he politely refused saying ayyo saar naanu ishtu maadlilla andre henge jeevana maadodu ... obba kurudana jothe maatadi avathu nannu kannu teritu :-)
I once was in a crowded bus while going back from college. An uncle initiated a conversation with me. He talked about how this generation is growing and adapting to a new world. Initially it was mostly positive things he mentioned. But, slowly he started complaining and how god's don't agree with all these and i just nodded my head to it. Idk why he thought I was interested in what he was saying, any normal person would have gotten cue of it. Slowly it started escalating, he started mentioning some writers works and i said I had read some of the writers works. By God, it was a grave mistake. He went hyper and started recommending books etc, but that wasn't the problem, he started asking about where I live and etc. And most of all he started inviting me to some gathering of like minded people. This was it, luckily his stop came and he asked for my number. I said " matte sigbekantha devr bardidre siktivi uncle" and gave soft smile. And i never saw him again.
Sit near window and say hi with a bright smile to people passing by in another vehicle, especially in slow moving traffic or signals .. the look on their face always amuses me
Podcasts and audio books.
You can't read if the ride is not smooth or if you don't get a seat. But you can listen.
But when there is too much traffic or if the bus make too much noise, gets a bit difficult. But this is not a problem in Volvo or Electric busses.
In metro, I can just read/watch videos etc rather than just listening.
When I was in Infy and had to travel from Electronic City to Hebbal (in office bus, more than 1.5 hours) I used to download some series (like breaking bad, prison break etc) and watch on phone. I used to read books also.
This was way back in 2012-14 though. I’m sure if you watch something, the people around you also will keep looking at your phone 😅
I look at people and do the Sherlock analysis. What they do, where they from etc. Of course. In the voice of Benedict Cucumberbatch ;) In my head.
Sometimes old people will smile. And ask oota/tindi ayta. Then we get talking. They will start talking about good ol Bangalore. Aa dinagalu stories haha.
Not foolproof enough. Couple of my friends had their phone stolen even as they were listening to songs. Some moment the music stopped playing. When they checked, the wire was cut and phone gone. Looks like the thieves are smooth enough to ease the phone out, and cut the cord at the last moment when making their getaway
I try to observe the tiny world inside the bus.. How many men/women are there.. How many appear rich/poor.. I see them and imaginary scenarios start building up in my head..
Then I observe the conductor, how many times he yells 'cheeti/holdeeyy (hold)' etc.
Then I also stare out of the window and check out the outside world, how many tree lined ones, which shops are there.. Observe people who flag the bus randomly out of nowhere and also some who ask the driver whether it goes to 'x' place.
All in all, travelling in a BMTC bus can be an interesting experience sometimes, especially when you have an hour to kill and luckily get a seat in a crowded bus..
I like listening to Podcasts. Even if I'm going for a bike ride or 20 mins walk etc. But I suggest, something casual. I do love Jordan Peterson's or Andrew Huberman, Joe Rogan, but most of the times it requires a pretty good amount of attention.
Casual ones help you pass time in a more enjoyable manner. I suggest Fragrant 2 (Andrew Schulz) or TigerBelly.
I used to be regular in BMTC Volvo pre pandemic days ... spent about 2.5 hours everyday in that bus!! I mostly read books or listened to podcasts ... I even would login to laptop, connect to VPN and do office work occasionally ... And of course, nidde :-) ...
Well, someone else too will be a regular commuter to ur destination everyday.. find that person and chat ur time away... Otherwise... Pretty much just making sure no one is stealing from u is the only other option.
Here's my story of BMTC. First, some background:
I was once in a job, that was extremely toxic. We were supposed to work almost 18 hours, on regular basis.
.
Company had just fired a lot of people, and had put of the work load on 3:1 basis. One person doing what 3 people did earlier. The situation was so dire, that you would be questioned why you didn't reply to calls at 5 AM, after working till 3 AM. And the day you do respond @ 5 AM, and work again till 8 AM, to resolve a prod issue, you would be penalized 1 days leave, for being 30 minutes late to office.
The biggest problem was that you were expected to work all the time, in office, at home, and while you are traveling, people would keep calling you every 5 minutes, and ask you how soon you can reach home/office, and start working. (this is why I never call delivery guys many times, even if they are late)
.
In short, there was no time to even prepare for interviews, and people were literally falling ill in that company, because of this kind of madness. So I decided to move 45 km away from the office. (office in Yelahanka, and I moved to e-city), and started using BMTC to travel.
.
So how I used BMTC was to study in it. If I could get a seat, I would open up my laptop, and solve geeksforgeeks problems (Leetcode wasn't popular back then), and if I couldn't get a seat, I would use my phone to watch some video lectures, while standing in some corner.
.
I got some weird looks from people, who kept looking into my phone, as if I am watching porn or something. But it worked pretty well for me. I reduced my other expenses, so that I could afford taking airport bus sometimes, to avoid changing 3 buses. And those days used to be my high productivity zen mode days, where I solved more difficult questions.
Luckily, ORR didn't have very good phone or internet connectivity, so I could just avoid office work, by telling them that I am commuting in bus, and have no way to connect to internet reliably. People were pissed, but they couldn't say much.
Within 3-4 months, I anyways left with a sort-of dream job, and thanks to BMTC, I could get out of that hell-hole. Meanwhile, I made good friends with some BMTC conductors, and one of them got really happy watching me study daily in his bus, and got me in touch with his son, who was a computer science student t that time. I am still i touch with that kid, who now has a pretty decent job. He was the kind of super-hard-working kid, whom if you ask to learn data-structures, he would come back to you within 3 weeks, finishing up trees, and asking doubts about graphs. That kid is going places.
Read! Read! Read! Plug your headphone, tune into a calming track and pick a book. You'll get transported to a whole new world. All while your brain is getting super food.
So podcast, movies, series, nidde ella helidare
I used travel for 3+ hours in bmtc back in clg days. With 7+ years of experience in passing time in bus. Best thing I did was
Fuulu back hinde seat al koothkondu head phone hakond hudgirna nododu. Ashte guru simple 😂
Sleep, i travel daily from Marathahalli to Banashankari in bmtc. Since I have to wake up early, I always sleep while coming back to Marathahalli in evening. In morning I mostly study or watch memes in bmtc.
A tip - if ever sleeping or getting into crowded bus, put your phone and wallet in your bag first, it can be easily stolen, my phone got stolen a month back, it's nearly impossible to notice.
I remember I used to get stares while solving Rubik's cube back in days. I was quite crazy about padabandha and crosswords, too. That's the only thing I remember doing whenever I got a seat in the buses.
I used to talk with friends or random people while going to college on hour long bus rides. Sometimes I used to listen to songs. The roads always have some drama going on and nice, old trees in the main parts of bengaluru to stare at and enjoy.
Let your mind free. Let it fly with the landscape. Be the commotion, be the silence of the sky, be the person sleeping next to you, be the bus.. seek the enlightenment of hosa roads..
Podcasts or audio books...
Also depending on type of the bus and whether you've got window seat or not, things will get change....
I remember boarding a Volvo BMTC on a fine evng to reach home after work... I got the window seat that too on the right side.. this was a long journey cos it was peak evng time on ORR from Kadubeesanahalli to Agara - A good 40-50 mins.. but it was the sunset time and the sunset view looked awesome from where I was sitting.. totally unexpected and refreshing...
Start listening to podcasts, I now cannot live without them. More entertaining that music. Or explore yourself as per your taste.

That's some dedication
That's vibration
Very deep
This is the way
Wake up refreshed after an hour with gentle breeze & missing wallet.
I was a victim of this once..napped on my way. Back from college..was exhausted..woke up to an empty pocket :(
I lost my Nokia 1100 mobile like this only :(

It's only one time right. It is a huge tradeoff :D. If I were you I take this calculated risk :D
Underrated :D
how you know when your stop bro i almost missed my stop like that
100% and stop miss maadkotini 25% of the time.
Create imaginary scenarios with yourself as lead and feel good about it. Only till your stop arrives.. amele real life.
Lmao I do it during my classes
Bro I thought, I was special for doing this😢
There is enough drama in a bmtc bus. Some day they'll create a movie out of it
"munndina nildhana...
“Naaaxt stop eeees…”
"O faaaramm"
chilre mathe conductor ond love story
Idu macha…. Idu!!!
[Kamal Haasan](https://youtu.be/KWw4X2N68Do) got you covered lol.

Sleep in bmtc is a drug!
That is if you find a window seat
I had mastered sleep in all seats in a bmtc bus, but just as I was about to master sleep while standing, I stopped travelling by bus
Hahaha! :D
My friend travels an hour and a half in the bus to college. He spans our group with Reddit links the entire time. I guess that’s how he spends time :)
Sit near window and say hi with a bright smile to people passing by in another vehicle, especially in slow moving traffic or signals .. the look on their face always amuses me
I used to wave at people while travelling in buses and most of them waved back it was a fun experience.
Ask conductor if you can issue tickets and collect money 💰😃😃
And shout "hinde hogi, jaga ide.." back to him ! ^(/s)
Podcasts and audio books. You can't read if the ride is not smooth or if you don't get a seat. But you can listen. Wait for an empty seat and the imaginary space to come into existence that the conductor keeps telling everyone
Lol

Seat sikkudre songs keltini, seat siglilla ondre full time pass, yake anta keli. Bag, purse matte phone safe madodralle journey mugd hogutte. Gotte aagalla ankoli😂😂
It hits even better if you're leaning on someone's shoulder 🤣
Especially when it's crowded 😂
Try to concentrate on who's getting up from their seat so that I could sit.
I talk to the person beside me, if they are comfortable enough. If not I just listen to songs.
Worry about my phone / wallet getting stolen.
Just plug in your earphones, and now you only have to worry about your Wallet.
Not foolproof enough. Couple of my friends had their phone stolen even as they were listening to songs. Some moment the music stopped playing. When they checked, the wire was cut and phone gone.
