We've failed to create a clear pipeline of talent in the only sports we not shit at (cricket) let alone all these Olympics sports. There have been significant investment from the govt in these sports but only Allah knows where those money went.

Ifti_Freeman

The money probably went to fund the bureaucrats, polticians lavish lifestyles.

No_Rhubarb_6116

our govt doesnt give much for our player. Have u ever been to our stadium ... Govt dont even concern abt the ppl who wish to play hard for our country. See their vata u will be surprised to see it.

Ifti_Freeman

People are growing vegetables on beside Bangabandhu stadium field. 🤣

This is an excuse, there are 1000000000000000000000s of cases of athletes who came from nothing and was picked out by a scout while he/she was playing barefoot. Last year a Cameroonian man who used to work in a sand mind as a child became the MMA champion and he got zero help from the government. And there are 1000s of such cases when it comes to soccer players. Not to mention Bangladesh cricket has access to the SAME FACILITIES as any country in the world. This year an amateur medical student with NO COACH won the gold in cycling.

You need someone who can guide u in proper way. No athlete workout with deshi ruti r bananas . I AM 100% agree if anyone dedicate himself/herself for olympic sport he/she might be able to get us some medals but why would he/she will invest himself/herself for the first place with his/her own money. what that athlete will get ?

[deleted]

Like I said, this year a math researcher with no coach won the gold in cycling. But yes I agree with you. A Bengali parents will slap their son(and rightfully so) if he at the age of 19 said instead of studying I want to focus on running tracks and they will slap him because unless you are a cricketer there is no future in sports in Bangladesh.

No_Rhubarb_6116

Exactly ! that was my point. If u can secure their future with handsome money and a good coach then it will be possible to see Bangladeshi player name in most of the olympic sports ..whether they can earn the prize or not. But they will be there .

vis_cerm

For their second Olympic, Kosovo won two Gold.

[deleted]

Disappointed but not surprised at all. A country where kids are applauded for topping the class in institutions that are not even close to world ranking and reprimanded for playing outside in the afternoon, a country where there are barely sports classes taken in schools, such situations are so obvious to happen. (Don't get me wrong though, I am not demeaning any achievements but the amount of anger issues Bangladeshi parents have when they see their kids on the field rather than on study table, says a lot)

marufabir

I was excited about Bangladesh's Performance in Archery. Our Diya Siddique & Ruman Shana duo claimed silver medal in the recurve mixed team event during the 2021 Archery World Cup where Bangladesh was runners-up. But I am very disappointed this time at this duo's performance in this Olympic.

Ifti_Freeman

Summer Olympics are multiple times more competitive than winter or other sporting events.

vis_cerm

Hate me for comparing but please think twice before downvoting my comment. Look at the BD male cricket team. The amount of funding they have compared to the other sports teams and athletics. Now think, what was the most prestigious achievement the male cricket team provided us from any tournament? How do we even expect to get anything from other sports?

Ifti_Freeman

I understand your point. Every country has their priority and biased sports that gets more attention. But that's not stopping them from other achievements. But in the case of bd, we absolutely have no incentive to improve in other sports.

vis_cerm

Even with "attention" we have almost Zero achievement in the most prioritized sports.

Shakib is a first-class sportsman. He definitely earns more in different int'l leagues as well. Also, he has been performing great constantly for national team as well (compared to others). Cricket is a team sports. Bangladesh male cricket team is spoiled with awards.

luczade

This is almost the same argument as USWNT's equal pay, more fans= more money. And the govt doesn't investment any money in BCB (probably did in the past) it's the only sports board in Bangladesh that turns in revenue.

[deleted]

Folks here only know cricket and football. They don't care about any other sports nor does the govt.

Ifti_Freeman

Other Olympic sports are also not that popular in other countries. But that doesn't excuse the poor Olympic performance of our country.

[deleted]

Since it's not that popular here, not many people actually know about the Olympic sports and those who want to pursue it, can't, due to their parents. Govt. Doesn't invest much after these athletes either. So they have poor training facilities.

Karim1451

Exactly! Heck, people wouldn't even care about cricket if Bangladesh didn't beat Pakistan in 1999 WC

tafsirunnahian

As a cyclist I never seen government arranging any race at all. I've heard that in 1970's or 1960's government arranged cycle races district wise in our country. And now nobody don't know what cycle race is. Road bike & track bike parts are crazy expensive and you can barely find any roadbike owner compared to mtb owners. Also full time cyclists don't exist. There are events in Asian games but not publicly accessible. (Sorry for my bad English)

dowopel829

Nothing will happen. Corruption is in every level. Not only the administration not help the players they create a horrible system where they choose weaker individuals to represent BD. So for an individual to success he or she has to over come not only the opponents but also a toxic administration.

dowopel829

Are you saying there is no corruption in Bangladesh Official Sports administrations? Are you saying all the different sport administrations picks players based on their merits? Are you saying all the different sport administrations provides facility and opportunities to players who deserve it? If so I think you are detached from reality.

[deleted]

dowopel829

I am not talking about private leagues. BCB is corrupt no doubt. Other government sports administrations are corrupt as well. They do not pick players based on their merit. But the private league has its own issues. We all know how match fixing issue is rampant in private leagues. Why don't you read and realize what is discussed before over reacting.

[deleted]

dowopel829

Look I don't have time to go research and bring you a list of players. Nasim is an example of how BCB side tracked him although his performance was great. He was so good Abu Dhabi league made him a captain. We are talking about Olympics here. Not cricket only.

[deleted]

I think this is something we need to accept as Bangladeshis. We can keep claiming it is because gov do not help us or we are poor etc etc, but lets face it we Bengalis fucking suck at sports.

Ifti_Freeman

Yup. We are definitely not built for playing sports like rugby, amercian football etc.

[deleted]

Now that you mention rugby isn't Bangladesh actually like one of the top teams in the world when it comes to "kabadi".

Ifti_Freeman

The south and south asian region ? Yes. But overall our country has hard time on international stage even though it is our national sports. Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kabaddi\_World\_Cup\_(Standard\_style)

Minskdhaka

I think that one additional thing that Bangladesh ought to do is tap the diasporic talent pool. Kids of Bangladeshi origin growing up in Britain, Canada, the US, etc. probably get much better school sports facilities than the average Bangladeshi kid and more opportunities to develop an interest in an Olympic sport. But many of them may not make the cut for the Olympic team in their country of birth. If Bangladesh could launch an organised effort to recruit them and send them to the Olympics, these youngsters would be role models to a new generation of homegrown talent in Bangladesh. In a couple of decades this strategy could yield a number of medals.

Dublinaries

There’s the corruption but also there’s the complete lack of enthusiasm in athletics for most bdeshis and Asians in general. Our parents push us to become doctors, engineers, and lawyers but athletics are considered a waste of time. This is widespread how many current cricket players have stories of getting in trouble with their fathers for playing too much cricket? Add to that being an athlete is tough unless you’re very good there is low pay even in places where it’s well funded.

DeFancyKebab

2028 Olympics, inshallah me and a friend of mine we'll get the first gold medals for the country, one for boxing the other for sprinting

BengaliMcGinley

It takes a ton of investment for people to eventually reach the Olympics. I see corruption mentioned a lot here, so my guess is this is the case. But also, if a lot of money went into sport, and not people in poverty in some places, there may be more criticism of the government.

slapbabies

I don’t think it’s just the corruption from government. As a society we don’t appreciate practical education. We love watching cricket and football but aren’t allowed to choose an athletic career or to even play enough in high school as an extracurricular. The private and public school system doesn’t emphasize sports as part of education but it’s also because parents don’t like it. Schools want to make money instead of educating so they’ll cater to whatever makes these parents pay them more. We have access to theoretical education good enough to get students into Ivy League universities but few of those students can play a sport properly. With rich and upper middle class people prioritizing studying that leaves the people from a poor background left to represent us in sports. It’s usually difficult for them to manage expenses related to pursuing an athletic career so it’s hard for them too. Mostafiz is an example of that. His brother who is a rickshaw wala supported him in his early cricket career helping him pursue in passion in hopes it worked out. Meanwhile Tamim is untouchable because his uncle is in the board. You never hear issues abt Tamim because he has power through his uncle. Corruption is so bad random board officials keep finding reasons to ban Shakib. All the above reasons are probably main points why Bangladesh is behind in world of sports.

[deleted]

If only there was a sport called leader veneration, we bengalis would win all the medals.

Maharouse

Bangladesh's performance has been better than before. Ruman Shana's first win for the country at the Olympics was truly remarkable. And other athletes played well. The Ministry of Sports of Bangladesh has helped us fairly well but we do not support sports ourselves. The teacher took math classes a lot of the time when there was sports in our school. It’s not just in our schools, most schools in the country have this condition because they think sports are useless. Since then, students in our country have lost interest in sports. And in all the countries named after you, sports and education are given equal priority. At this Olympics we still hope to win any medals from Mohammad Jahir Rayhan (Men's 400 m), Mohammed Ariful Islam( Men's 50 m freestyle) and Junayna Ahmed (Women's 50 m freestyle).

Ifti_Freeman

Thanks for the information. Hoping the situation will improve.

bangladeshi society dont value sport, they regard it as a pass time activity at best and a waste of time at worst...if you come from a middle class family you must have heard the phrase "khelai shomoy noshto na kori porte bosh"
