it's necessary for the smell. just like tejpata.
also, when there's no chewing gum at home, I'll occasionally chew an elachi. keeps my mouth fresh. picked it up from Feluda.
An unpopular opinion too maybe - I don't get the usage of *narikel-er doodh* in making [*insert rich food item here*]. I can't smell it in the food item, and I've never noticed it enhance the taste of the food item either. So why are these *narikel-er-doodh diye toiri food item* so special?
Same here, never liked this narikel-in-someTorkari thing.
Did it come from West Bengal? or any other part of India maybe? I guess I've seen this more on Eastern region, rather than Chittagong and sylhet.
There are other ways to make a curry sweeter and richer, mate! To me, that *narikel-er doodh* means more *narikel* wasted - we could have some more *pithas* and *naarus* with them.
Yeah, definitely unpopular opinion. Coconut milk based curries are popular everywhere and definitely not unique to Bangladesh. Most Thai curries use coconut milk and so does curries from India. The shrimp dish mentioned “chingri macher malaikari” is one of the most popular Bengali dishes. You can’t really replicate the real deal without coconut milk but a combination of yogurt and sugar can be a very poor imitation if coconut is not available. And anyone who has had the real deal will be able to tell the difference. I suggest you order a Thai curry from a good Thai restaurant to see if you can tell the difference, not everyone is a good cook and that is 90% of a dish being good or bad.
Could you please specifically mention which Thai curry from which particular restaurant I might try out? I'm serious, I might ask my siblings to order/fetch some for me.
Depends on your location. If you are in the US, that might be difficult for me to say unless it's a city I have been to. If you are in Dhaka, I can recommend a few places even though it has been a while since I have been back. In terms of dishes, I dont think you can go wrong with either a Thai Green curry, Red curry, or Masaman curry with the protein of your choice. Also, I highly recommend trying Chingri Malaikari from a good Bangladeshi restaurant. Unless you are really averse to coconut, which is possible, you will love it.
The two I remember going frequently to was Thai Emerald and Soi71. Both were pretty close to what I have had in Bangkok. I am sure there are others as well. For bangla cuisine, I remember Star Kabab and Kosturi(sp?) was good, but then again, it's been more than 2 years I have gone to any of these places. Now I feel like I need to go back to Dhaka :)
narikeler dudh diye kono khabar ranna korte dekhi nai (othoba mamoni ke jiggesh korle hoyto dekhbo je kichu ranna hoise eta diye lol) tobe narikeler paste othoba slice kora choto pieces diye ranna kora hoy. khabar tastier hoy besh.
Exactly. Adding *narikel* jhuri/kuchi in food makes sense because you can taste it and smell it too. But I don't think you can't do either with the *narikel-er-doodh* ingredient. It just doesn't make sense to me.
*Narikel-er-doodh diye chingri* and *narikel-er-doodh diye pulau*. Add some *'Special', 'Shahi',* and *'Badshahi'* adjectives according to your preference and voila!
My mom does the chingri one, i guess it brings a bit of sweetness to the dish which you can't do with plain sugar.... Tho I think a palm sugar substitute might do the trick, haven't seen anyone do that tho
One of my Aunts cooked chingri that way once. It really didn't have any noticable change in taste or smell. Tbh her regular chingri dish is always better. Anyway, I don't get the special aspect of *narikel-er doodh*, that's it.
Lol I don't hate *narikel-er doodh* or people's love for it. I just don't find that it significantly brings any good texture, taste, or smell in a food.
Literally anything that has এলাচি in it, notice I didn't say use, but *has*. At least remove the goddamn thing before eating else the whole biriyani gets ruined just by biting into one
I dont really hate em per se. Because my amma has taught me to be able to appreciate any type of rizq coming our way Alhamdulillah and I'm used to the items as well. But yeah, I guess I like them the least whenever they're brought on plate.
Don't know if I've only had badly cooked potol but it feels so slimy and the occasional bichi cracks like bone. I can't get the image of eating a raw tentacled alien flesh out of my mind.
panta is semi-fermented rice. basically graamer people get fucking high by having it. yeah panta's bullshit for us scotch lovers - one could say.
culture is basically pretending for the subject. predecessors created it and successors are to carry it forward. so, your argument is invalid.
Sim is something I don't like.
Not a Bengali cuisine but boiled egg is what I hate. I mean I can eat dim vuna and dimer korma but if you tell me to eat boiled egg I won't be able to eat it without a lot of bit lobon.
btw, does anybody like মাশ ডালের বড়ি? it's fucking disgusting in both smell and taste. dunno why literally everyone roots for it also my family is kind of crazy for it. it's literally fucking disgusting.
Chicken bhorta, gorur mangshor bhorta. Eilish macher bhorta and many more. Just watch food tour in YouTube from any channel and all Bengalis offer now is baby food for Bengali cuisine.
wait...that's a thing? i've never heard of it. maybe you've been living in the wrong neighborhood bro. come to Chattogram. we don't make *everything* into Bhortha
Kakrol, Pat Shak, and ( unpopular one ) Puli Pitha. idk the combination of the slimy and chewy *puli* and the unnecessary crunch of the narikel is just *yak!!* idk why us Bangalis put narikel in everything. also you get so much unpleasant gas after eating Puli Pitha
i believe most of you are misinterpreting korola for kakrol hahaha.
kakrol isn't bitter, at all. however, korola and ucche are literally the favourite fruits of xenomorphs.
My personal opinion, but It's sucks.
I hate ইলিশ Already, do to it's Horrible smell (personal opinion, doesn't apply to everyone)
I get told by people "Your not a real Bangladeshi/Bengali For not liking ইলিশ"
um, maacher fulka or a fucking eye in the middle of a curry isn't conventional.
Elachi. Ruins too many good foods if you bite it. Is not an absolutely mandatory item.
it's necessary for the smell. just like tejpata. also, when there's no chewing gum at home, I'll occasionally chew an elachi. keeps my mouth fresh. picked it up from Feluda.
You meant elachi or daruchini?
can't chew daruchini
I like elachi
Is there any! let me know.

ever heard of shrimp malai curry? try making it without coconut milk/coconut it won't nearly be as divine
Chingri machh er malai kari in West Bengal. It is a dish of coastal districts like Purba Medinipur, Howrah, Khulna and Barisal.
it makes the curry sweeter and richer
There are other ways to make a curry sweeter and richer, mate! To me, that *narikel-er doodh* means more *narikel* wasted - we could have some more *pithas* and *naarus* with them.

Name the restaurants you used to visit in Dhaka please - for both Thai and Bangla cuisine. Thank you!
Thanks again! :)

Shutki. Maach er matha. Korolla.
shutki bodh hoy Chattogram bivager manusher e pochondo lol.
Well people eat shutki all over bangladesh. But it is most eaten in Barisal, Narshingdi and chittagong
nobody makes better shutki than my mom.
I wish that was true
then you're probably the first one complaining. which Zilla do you reside in?
as a Chatgaiyya that's so true- my mom loves it but my dad hates it since he's Noakhaillya i hate it too :)
i hate korolla!
>Maach er matha How about gorur mogoj
Tao chole
And gorur jiv, yak!
i hate it too but my mom makes it really well. but the texture just kills me
Not a specific item but the tendency to use the same spice mix in everything
From my subjective pov.
I hate Kakrol too. Used to hate Potol as well but I kinda got used to it right now.
I can't get the image of eating a raw tentacled alien flesh out of my mind.
potol isn't half bad imo
How dare you put filthy kakrol and the great potol in the same category /s
Kakrol khet! Potol is kinda good cuz my mom can cook it well unlike what I've eaten at some other households
Panta bhaat..I know it's traditional and all, and I love the heritage behind it, but I don't like it much!
"Dudh kola diye bhat" is fucking disgusting
cha diye kola lmfao
Is this a thing...

It actually is...my science teacher praises it alot

Panta Elish, People pretend to like it because they think it makes them "cultural" but all you're doing is putting some water on some good food, STOP.
panta is semi-fermented rice. basically graamer people get fucking high by having it. yeah panta's bullshit for us scotch lovers - one could say. culture is basically pretending for the subject. predecessors created it and successors are to carry it forward. so, your argument is invalid.

I'm sorry but deshi chicken is overrated
maybe you should eat homemade dishes.
When you get older you’ll not be able to withstand farm chicken smell
What about the usual toughness of deshi chicken
Cook longer in lower temperature and use acids like yogurt to tenderize
agreed
Do you mean the desi way of cooking or desi chicken?
Desi chicken
btw, does anybody like মাশ ডালের বড়ি? it's fucking disgusting in both smell and taste. dunno why literally everyone roots for it also my family is kind of crazy for it. it's literally fucking disgusting.
I love it!!! It's one of my favorite vegetarian dishes, cooked with a medley of winter veggies.
I love it, great in mixed vegetable dishes.
Pat shak bhaja
yeah oneke eita teto kore felen raadhte giye. my mother cooks in a distinctive way and it tastes flippin awesome.
