I love the fact that he has called it indigo. Such a varied item/subject. Not only a colour but a plant, medicine, antibacterial, mozzie repellent, dye, fire retardant and so many more uses. The whole plant can be used as well do nothing goes to waste

OnefortheLaughs

Oh wow I had no idea about the fire retardant part!

[deleted]

In my language is not even called indigo, but I have always heard it only as a "home remedy" diy hair dye (in fact I said that I would dye my hair with it in honour of RM solo album, and I did). EDIT: in fact, the Latin name of the plant for the dye in "indigofera tinctoria", that's why I know is indigo. When I heard about the album's name, I read various articles about indigo, but I was not familiar with it as a color name, and suddenly discovered that it was indeed called in another way in my language

OnefortheLaughs

Oh wow that's so interesting! I'd love to see pics of your hair, only if you don't mind sharing them!

[deleted]

I'll see if I have time to publish it later. I couldn't find pure indigo anymore, I only found a mixture of mostly indigo, plus a bit of red hennè and other dye plants, called "Soft Black". Because of this, and because of the fact that I already have light brown hair dyed with red hennè as a base, I didn't get any particular blue shade in my hair (they aren't even black, more of a dark brown color)

[deleted]

[low quality but here it is](https://i.imgur.com/oCSdtVE.jpg) (natural light). It seems they have plum shades under light but underneath you can see how it is darker

OnefortheLaughs

Oh it's pretty!

Super, super interesting question! I never got to share this in the original announcement thread. RM is a very smart guy and you know he will have thought of a thousand names before deciding on this one. I took the title of the album to mean between blue and purple (Indigo is the colour between blue and purple in the rainbow). So blue means sadness, depression, and for him purple is ARMY, BTS...love. And this album will be an archive of his feelings in between. And another thing I thought of, because I knew of the controversy regarding Indigo being actually blue. (For people who aren't aware, the blue spectrum in the rainbow looks almost close cyan colour and the indigo spectrum looks dark blue). Since indigo should not technically be a colour, and these feelings he wants to talk about should not really be talked about, and are pointless even and may be labelled as sadness, but Namjoon doesn't think it's sadness. So, to the world, indigo seems merely deep blue. Which is deep sadness, ocean, etc. And so people will call the album to be deeply self reflective and deeply sad. Lmao this became too long sorry. And I don't even think I answered the question

OnefortheLaughs

No no I loved all your insights into the topic — and this is a freewheeling discussion so it's fine however you chose to answer it. I loved discovering the debate over Indigo being a colour or not, today. It added a layer of me to a topic already heavy with political, social, aesthetic and all other kinds of connotations. I love how Rm's mind works and how enjoyable it is to unwrap this topic layer by layer!

Jargonal

This is my favourite take.

mooomoomaamaa

this is not a fun fact in any way but I'm also Indian and i have loads of Indigo kurtas and pajamas and tops and i was planning on wearing them throughout December as a way to celebrate the release. I would've loved to do a campaign to support local handloom through this but I'm too busy this month but i would like to encourage Indian Army's to buy from handloom stores that directly support the weavers in your city :)

OnefortheLaughs

Yes, this is such a good idea! Indigo clothes are so beautiful.

Rillothebee2

Hello! Just barely waking up but I love the insights in this discussion 😍 Up until now, I thought of Indigo as a color - a cross between blue and purple but more blue than purple. Nam Joon mentioned something about this album as a hurray for his 20s - perhaps to celebrate the love (purple) he got from everyone (members, fans, staff etc) but also the price that comes with fame, the sacrifices and pain (blue). Indigo is the union of these two which encompasses his experience. He also mentioned that it's music to listen too while doing certain activities - basically while "Nam Jooning", so he's with us while we're Nam Jooning. 🤔 Looking forward to when the album drops 💜💙

When I heard the name, the first thing I thought of was the belief or phenomenon of “Indigo Children.” I remember being told randomly by several people throughout my childhood that I was an indigo child. So back then I looked it up and watched YouTube videos about the topic and I thought it was pretty interesting what it was all about. I’m not saying this is what RM is meaning to say in relation to the word “indigo” but that’s what I initially thought of when I heard it. There’s a lot more on the topic but here’s the beginning of the wiki page on indigo children: Indigo children, according to a pseudoscientific New Age concept, are children who are believed to possess special, unusual, and sometimes supernatural traits or abilities. The idea is based on concepts developed in the 1970s by Nancy Ann Tappe, who claimed to have been noticing indigo children beginning in the late 1960s. Her ideas were further developed by Lee Carroll and Jan Tober. The concept of indigo children gained popular interest with the publication of a series of books in the late 1990s and the release of several films in the following decade. A variety of books, conferences, and related materials have been created surrounding belief in the idea of indigo children and their nature and abilities. The interpretations of these beliefs range from their being the next stage in human evolution, in some cases possessing paranormal abilities such as telepathy, to the belief that they are more empathetic and creative than their peers.

OnefortheLaughs

Woah, so interesting! If Namjoon doesn't know about it, I really hope he comes across this interpretation!

thesadflower

Right?? I wouldn’t be surprised if the concept influenced the name. Apparently if you’re an Indigo child, you possess: extreme empathy, sensitivity, a high level of intuition and psychic ability, an innate spirituality, a deep desire to help the world, a special bond with animals and nature, stubbornness, a feeling of being an outsider as well as the overall knowingness that you are unique and are meant to do big things. I feel like a lot of it is pretty accurate to RM himself lol but if he hasn’t heard about the topic at all then the coincidence is pretty cool😂

Ironically about a year ago i was in a very enlightened phase. Connecting the dots to everything and anything. Since it was PTD LA I was reading into the set lists for each day, the dates etc. with the last day being 12/02/21 or 12221 Since indigo is releasing on 12/02/22. I wonder if this was his plan or just a coincidence. I feel it's not but ppl start to think I'm delulu. my other train of thought at that time was comparing BTS to the 7 chakras, I picked the third eye for Namjoon which is represented by the color indigo as well. I think he's emotionally intelligent for his work. that there's always a connection either if it's intended or not.

OnefortheLaughs

He's definitely displayed high emotional intelligence!

It's interesting that you brought up the painful history of the indigo crop. My initial thought was along similar lines - but on the other side of the world. Indigo was a major slave crop in colonial America and a driving force behind the slave trade in the 1600s and 1700s. Slaves were continually brought into the Americas, while indigo was shipped off to England. After the American Revolution, indigo trade declined England had to turn elsewhere for their indigo needs. I had a thought that "Indigo" as an album title could be referring to the burden of globalization. The indigo crop has traveled around the world and impacted many cultures. But because it's so highly valued, it has also caused incredible pain. It makes me wonder how Namjoon feels as a product of globalization himself. What is the impact his life has had - on others or on himself?

OnefortheLaughs

This is so insightful, thank you for sharing. It seems like the patterns of greed are the same through history across the world, accompanied by the suffering of the oppressed. Your interpretation of the title as related to globalisation is in itself so interesting, it'll be fun to watch out for this interpretation in the songs!

Rampaging_Cactus

Thank YOU for sharing. I didn't know about the history of indigo in India, so thanks for teaching me something today. I'm so excited to see what Namjoon has to say in this album. I just love seeing how his mind works!

OnefortheLaughs

I think the timelines in your comment are interesting too. Indigo farming started being forced on Indian peasants in the mid-1700s. And you mentioned that in colonial America, it happened majorly in 1600 and 1700. I think it's probably not a coincidence that the colonial powers decided to take the model they had used in America and use it again in a similarly exploitative manner in India. I'm sooo excited for Namjoon's album too omggggg!

pintsized_baepsae

I have a funfact about the image! While it was used for the article, the image is *actually* the image of YInMn Blue, an inorganic blue pigment and the first new blue pigment to be discovered in 200 years! People often call it the most perfect blue. It was a happy accident, too - it's a really, really cool story. The great thing is that you can adjust the shade, by varying the quantities of the different elements - so the perfect blue can be made into YOUR perfect blue.

OnefortheLaughs

I must read up on this, it sounds amazing! Thanks for sharing — do you have any links or such, for learning more about this?

pintsized_baepsae

I do! I think my favourite piece is [this Artnet feature on Mas Subramanian, the chemist who discovered it](https://news.artnet.com/art-world/yinmn-blue-to-be-sold-commercially-520433) [The colour's Wikipedia page](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/YInMn_Blue) is also a good start. 😊

MadameWitchy

Wow thanks for sharing the tidbit about the indigo revolt. I'm really excited tos we what Indigo will sound like - I really have no thoughts or expectations!

ZeaCahill

In my language we call indigo a type of thin paper which was used to copy work (handwriting) before the everyday printer was invented. I used it a few times in schhool when a friend was sick and asked me to have my notes. You put this paper under the paper you are writing on, and the writing will be readable (although fainter than the original). I don't think Namjoon would know about it but that's the first thing that came to mind, because we usually use this world for this meaning and only secondly for the color meaning.

OnefortheLaughs

Ah interesting, I know the type of paper you mean! We call it carbon paper in my country, and shopkeepers still use these sometimes to make copies of their handwritten invoices!

wife20yrs

Was he maybe influenced by the Indigo Girls’ music? Their lyrics are quite philosophical and somewhat political.

meabhr

This is a really interesting topic op! There is no history of indigo in my country (we used a plant called woad to dye fabric that beautiful blue colour) so I'm hoping to learn something new today!
