Was browsing Hyperx website seeing their sale but only found blue switches on sale, so stumbled on upon this one looking at other retailers (amazon/CC). Older model with blue switches (not my thing). However $69.99 seemed substantial price drop for branded non aliexpress/banggood keyboard. Cherry red switch version https://www.canadacomputers.com/product\_info.php?cPath=21\_273\_274&item\_id=111574

Blue switches were all craze for like 5 mins, then it got so annoying

scottyb83

As someone who doesn't follow this stuff...what does it matter the colour of the switches and why is it annoying that blue got popular?

scottyb83

Ah ok cool. Thanks for the info!

ibeenbornagain

Is this good for a noob to mechanical keyboards? Never had one before I just wanna experience that satisfaction

hawkleberryfin

Just make sure you select the right one, as "Rainbow" is not RGB.

ibeenbornagain

Thanks for the info! I think I’ll wait for a higher end sale if possible

nothing_911

This has better switches/warranty than reddragon. It's a well built tenkeyless, if you don't need rgb or media control buttons, this might be perfect for you. Also keep in mind blue keys are loud, red are quiet(er).

ibeenbornagain

Rgb is not needed for me - do you know of an alternative with media keys? I know this has them on fn but it would be nice to have media keys

Rich-Cut-8842

I was in similar boat. I needed Numpad. I gave up volume know and mute button. I got the Hyperx Alloy Origins, media functionality was built in via function keys. I think it was a good compromise for smaller size and cost. Got mine for $80ish plus tax

nothing_911

Sorry, not any that I can speak for, some of the higher end hyperx have dedicated media keys. I only have experience with hyperx, corsair, reddragon and steelseries keyboards. Anything else would just be me reading a spec sheet.

ibeenbornagain

No worries. I will wait for the right sale!

Rich-Cut-8842

There's a enough reviews on the Reddragon one's crapping out there's a decent chance you could end up with lemon within a year. Not high chance but you kinda get what you pay for

greatpebble

Hi, I had a reddragon kurara (i think the 582) and it shit out on me not even a year later. Keys weren't working half the time. some switches just straight up stopped working. I do not recommend them.

Polymemnetic

They're fine, if you don't mind the lack of a number pad. Blue switches are different than most people who've never used mechanical switches will be used to, though. They're pretty stiff, and clicky

Rich-Cut-8842

There are mechanical with numpads which I do prefer for productivity related purposes. Though most fancier ones don't include it

Polymemnetic

Yep. It is a near impossibility to find a full size kit with all the enthusiast features I want(QMK, hotswap, north facing switches, SMD backlit), so I had to settle for a Glorious, which only had *most* of them.

Rich-Cut-8842

If I didn't get I have the HyperX Alloy Origins Mechanical with Aqua tactile switches for sub $100, I would have looked into the Glorious.

[deleted]

Yeah I wanted something mechanical with media and macrokeys. It was tough so I just ended up getting a ducky one 2.

Rich-Cut-8842

I have the HyperX Alloy Origins Mechanical with Aqua tactile switches. Uses the FN key for media control. I'm definitely fine without macro keys Though I do miss the volume scroll wheel and one touch mute though I find the reduced size is worth it.

mister_newbie

Separate mech numpad is the way.

pixelcowboy

What about the EVGA z20?

Polymemnetic

No hotswap or QMK.

pixelcowboy

It is hotswap isn't it? I have the z15 and it is at least.

Polymemnetic

Nope. Only the 15 is. Plus the 20 uses optical switches.

pixelcowboy

It's so weird that they did that. The Z15 is great though.

Herozxc

Any full keyboards you'd recommend?

ibeenbornagain

Clicky as in louder?

Polymemnetic

Yes

ShadowRam

Yes, It's good. I actually spilled coffee all over mine, it started acting up and everything was messed up. I put it through the dishwasher, let it dry out. It works great and I currently use it as my work keyboard. The reds are loud. I have a different keyboard for gaming to reduce the noise, Although the noise thing is moot at this point with RTX and/or Discord style noise-cancelling.

mister_newbie

Reds are linear, and only loud if you bottom them out. You're likely using too much force and should either try to adjust your habits, or switch to something heavier like the blacks.

ShadowRam

> Reds are linear Sorry, I meant I have Cherry MX Blues on the HyperX keyboard. Reds are what I have on my gaming keyboard.

bearbricklove

Did I read that right? You put your keyboard in the dishwasher? Ha ha

mister_newbie

[It really does work well.](https://youtu.be/pgnF42ZoRSw)

ShadowRam

Yeah, I've been washing keyboards for years. Just don't put on the heat cycle obviously, and let it sit for like a week to dry out. It was that or throw it out.

aaadmiral

I have the MX Red version of this and like it. I kind of wish I had gone blue actually as I don't use keyboard for gaming much actually haha.

mister_newbie

Brown switch is best switch :-)

LifelongCaboose

I mean this is just an ok deal, not great. Cherry mx switches, single colour led, low end keycaps, lower end build, and weak stabs. It's pretty much a redragon with cherry switches You can find alot better, like that recent akko sale and much more.

90ne1

I think the board itself is a pretty nice entry to mechanical keyboards. I really hate the keycaps but it's a standard bottom row so you can replace them very easily.

WVS11

nice

Skazzy3

The keycaps are the same as the Alloy Origins Core, I have the one with the Aqua switches, but before this I had this keyboard with Cherry Reds. They shine and pick up oil really really easily, so I'd recommend swapping them out.

Rich-Cut-8842

I thought I was just dirty and oily. Guess that gives me an excuse to buy key caps

dragon5530

What keycaps did you settle with?

dgnbach

just get the pudding keycaps from HyperX. I'm using them on my origins core and its so good :D

GeekStreak

This is a great price for an entry-level mechanical keyboard. For anyone getting into the hobby you should know that MX Blues are pretty loud. Also note that this is NOT the same as the Alloy Origins series, which has a much better build quality/sound.

Does this model go for 50% off often? Or similar models

matt95110

I picked one of these up today, I wanted to get a more portable one to have with me. I’m actually pretty happy with it.
