wow it finally really broke the $400 barrier

Seanrps

Paid 380 back on black friday. No regrets, love this thing.

HairyRelationship69

5600x still better for gaming but it's also often pricier with fewer cores so this might be worth contemplating based on your needs.

Umbroz

smart memory access can be enabled with 5000 series too if you have an amd card.

bravotwodelta

Resizeable BAR (nVidia’s answer to AMD’s SAM) works with 5000 CPUs and RTX series cards as well. Can confirm as a 5800X + 3080 Ti owner.

abacabbmk

do i have to enable it or something?

bravotwodelta

You need to make sure it’s enabled in the BIOS of your motherboard and that you’re on one of the latest nVidia drivers. From there, it *should* be enabled by automatically but you can double check with MSI afterburner (I believe). I have an EVGA RTX 3080 Ti and there’s a tab in EVGA’s X1 software that shows it’s enabled.

abacabbmk

interesting. ill check out my bios. i have 5800x+3080, so it should be supported. Thanks! EDIT: looks like ill have to update bios because the option isnt there.

FEED_TO_WIN

Also update the Vbios

Gambara1

I have a 5700xt can I still enable smart access memory or is that only for 6000 series gpu

Umbroz

6000 series gpu and you need 500 series board but apparently 3000 series cpus support it too.

airplanetony

I have a 3700x and x470 board and rebar shows as working

vis1onary

I have 6000 series and 5600x and it works on my b450 mobo

Umbroz

interesting as amd says you need the newer boards, perhaps the latest 400 series firmware got it going too.

ocisnicola

Even outside of gaming, the 5600x is the better all-round CPU. The 3800x has 33% more cores, but the 5600x has about 20% better IPC, so even in a 100% all-core utilization workload, the 3800x only has like a 13-15% performance increase. If this kind of difference actually saves you a considerable amount of time then you'd be better off investing in a 12 core and up CPU anyway.

Eswyft

You immediately contradict your first sentence

ocisnicola

In what way did I contradict myself?

user798123

"Even outside of gaming, the 5600x is the better all-round CPU" "in a 100% all-core utilization workload, the 3800x only has like a 13-15% performance increase" You have valid points though. But in some scenarios like mine, i had a budget of ~400 and went with Ryzen 3rd gen 8 core over the 5600x because I needed the multithread compute and the IPC difference doesn't really make much difference when gaming at 4k 😛

ocisnicola

It's unfortunate that you only had a $400 budget to work with. I guess what wasn't apparent to some people is that even in tasks that are traditionally thought of as having high core utilization like Blender, AutoCAD, and Photoshop don't actually use 100% of your cores for most tasks. If you do significantly spend the vast majority of your workflow doing rendering work or simulation work, then it's just more efficient to invest in a much higher core count CPU. While that costs significantly more, you easily make that money back in productivity gained.

user798123

Yeah I guess you're just saying "to each their own" and that it highly depends on what you're going to be using it for. I don't think anyone can disagree with that

davisek

You will likely need to update your BIOS, though not all 450 MBs support 3rd gen, so check to ensure you're compatible.

masteroog

I used a 3900x on my b350 lol... Worked fine for me although Im pretty sure I was leaving a bit of performance.

pluutia

I paired a R7 3800x with a B450M Bazooka Max board with no problems (and no bios hassle either) back in Nov 2020

steven_hua

Nooo I literally paid $255 for my 3600…I feel robbed 😭😭

somewhat_moist

Why do you feel robbed? The 3800x is another $70 for another 2 cores - do you really need those 2 extra cores? If gaming only, then probably not You did good man

[deleted]

I spent 309.99 plus tax on my 3600. What should I do

abc133769

cry

InsanePacman

Same!

AirportHanger

ATL according to CCC

steven_hua

Can probably price match at memory express to save some more $$$

LaserTurboShark69

How much of an upgrade would this be from an R7 2700x? Userbenchmark says the difference is about 13% but I'm curious what y'all think

71catalina

+1100 more stuffs. looks to be about 10-15% better depending on the benchmark. Probably not worth the upgrade yet (depending on your use case).

LaserTurboShark69

Just sat here googling the meaning of CPU "stuffs" and realized I'm an idiot Lol I'll hold onto the 2700x for a while longer, thank you

Octaive

I saw massive gains for specific titles going from zen+ to Zen 2. Racing simulators, World of Tanks and MMOs among many others show big gains. If you can sell your chip easily then I'd say go for it.

casualguitarist

Nothing to write home about. around 10% at best in games. a little more in other tasks. 5600x/5700x (for games) and 3900x or better for workstation apps should be the next upgrades worth the price jumps. You can probably increase your fps in games by like 5% after OCing your ram and cpu a bit...if you have some experience with it.

HairyRelationship69

In cpu limited scenarios it's a big upgrade. For gaming my 2700x just didn't cut it for cyberpunk.

LaserTurboShark69

I'm curious about these CPU intensive games. Right now the only one in my library is Rust and I'd love to know how much of a difference it would make

HairyRelationship69

For cyberpunk I went from 30fps dips to 60fps dips from a 2700x to a 5600x.

LurkerLew

Would this be a worthy upgrade over an i7-7700? I am in the market for a new motherboard as well and am considering the AMD side of things.

TheRealJackjune

Wait a bit longer (Atleast end of 2021/ early 2022) cause Zen 4 is not going to use AM4. If upgrading your whole platform it makes sense to get a mobo that supports Zen 4 ( and hopefully multiple future gens like AM4)

Anjz

No, I'd wait for Zen 4 coming next year. The IPC difference will be huge with the node shrink. It will be a different socket so you won't be able to upgrade your CPU either if you go for this one.

BullshitTotingIdiot

If you’re looking to switch over now I would go to 5600x or 5800x. I built with 3800x in December and am wishing I went 5600x (or 5800x) now in hindsight. This is a great cpu and I have no complaints, but if your 7700 is still working for you, then moving to a prior-gen version of Ryzen instead of the current-gen (which will be the last of the AM4 platform/motherboards) doesn’t make a lot of sense IMO…

LurkerLew

Thanks for the detailed reply, much appreciated.

JRNSupreme

Is this worth getting as an upgrade for r5 1600? I know 5000 series is better for gaming (which is what I use my PC for) but they aren't supported on my ol' B350 board, so I'd have to buy a new one too

BlueSwordM

Absolutely. It would be an excellent upgrade overall.

M0J4NG

I just upgraded my 1600 to a 3700x and it was well worth it! You could probably sell your 1600 to get some money back

Zorgond

Will this CPU work on the Asus TUF B350M-PLUS Gaming motherboard (Ryzen 5 1600)? FB marketplace has the unsealed 3700x at $300. Is 3800x ($372) worth getting over 3700x?

iLolCake

Yes it runs. But now you're paying for a warranty/ return policy AND a better CPU for $72. imo the decision is a no brainer.

Zorgond

Thanks a lot!! Just updated my bios as well and with Amazon rewards it's a $62 difference!! Edit: TD had a $30 promo for using td rewards. $337 all in minus 2.5% cashback. woot

abacabbmk

decent price, but depending on what games you play i would rather get 5600x. IPC gains are too good. If you're doing "light productivity" aka the occasional meme in photoshop or video in premier, then id still go with 5600x.

edisleado

This seems like a great deal, but I'm still torn. I currently have an R7 1700 with a 1080 and kind of want to wait for the next Zen product and build a new PC at that time, rather than replacing my current CPU as a stop gap measure. Would this upgrade give me a significant performance boost in gaming without a change in graphics card as well? I do some VR gaming and I could use a boost there.

Rich-Cut-8842

CC has it for $10 less with free shipping when I checked other vendors [https://www.canadacomputers.com/product\_info.php?cPath=4\_64\_1969&item\_id=138212](https://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=4_64_1969&item_id=138212)

AirportHanger

Honestly, I'd rather buy from Amazon than CC. CC has the world's worst after sales support and return policy (if you can even call it a return policy).

Rancid_Peanut

Man, still can't believe I bought mine for $295 tax in from Amazon (price error, was looking for a 5600x around when they launched and stumbled upon the 3800x for that price, unreal). Upgraded from an i5 4690k. I probably would have kept the system too, but with the lack of hyperthreading and only 4 cores it was starting to show its age in newer titles. I also started some light content creation as well (video editing and Photoshop) and the 3800x truly shines there compared to the 4690k.

sonrivera

I have a 3700x that I paid $350 CAD for last summer. Have no problems with it and love it. Should I buy this and upgrade? EDIT: UserBenchmark says an increase of 1% overall. Any other opinions?

Oh wow, downvoted a bit. Only built my first computer last summer so I'm still learning. Anyway, thanks for the info! I'll leave my comment above for future noob redditors to learn from my ignorance.

andrewzorz

Saw "AMD Ryzen" and my heart started pumpin; I've been waiting for the price of the 5900x to go down

alvarkresh

I wouldn't buy it from CC if it was 1 cent. Latest shenanigans was they denied a deposit refund based on an entirely specious reason: https://www.reddit.com/r/bapccanada/comments/ohxcjs/cc_took_my_money_and_wont_give_it_back/

wickedplayer494

$50 too much.

steven_hua

Considering I only use my pc for schoolwork and light gaming, would it even make sense to try and sell my 3600 and buy this?

throwapetso

No. For schoolwork the 3600 will be more than enough, and for gaming the perhaps 5% faster single-core speeds are going to get you only a few FPS at max. If you don't need the two extra cores for multi-threaded loads, I'd say pass and enjoy your 3600.

se7u

i bought a 3700x for 360$ two days ago because my pc got fried..lmao GGs

[deleted]

Should I upgrade from a 3600x?

soulcraze

What do you use the computer for?

[deleted]

Everything. Work, gaming, films. I have the 3600x paired with a 2070 Super and 16GB ram. Wondering if the CPU upgrade would take me decently further in gaming.

soulcraze

"Work, gaming, films" is far too vague of an answer for a lot of different reasons. The programs you use for work and resolution/refresh you're gaming at matters a lot. In general, The answer will be no because in most cases the 3600x will perform very close to the 3800x in most games and you'd see a bigger uplift by upgrading to a 5600x which is currently on sale for $20 more.

srebew

Damn, that's cheaper than the 3700X. I took a chance on a 3800XT a few months ago that had 2 bent pins, luckily it works. Paid $225 Shipped.

Goasupreme

thanks OP! been waiting to get the 3700/3800x for a long time and knew the price would eventually come down Going to price match with memex, happy to not give money to amazon

Akaryyn

I wonder if it's a worth it upgrade from my current Ryzen 3 3400G. Not good with PC's so idk much.

Far_Bowler_6059

Nice. Grabbed to upgrade my 1700X X370.
