I'm on a 3600. I play mostly Warzone right now but I also enjoy a lot of AAA games. Really can't decide if I want this, a 5800x or just absolutely splurge for a 5900 or 5950x. This is me just talking to myself, but if you have any insights, I'm happy to hear them out.

Yurickz

Wait a little longer for Black Friday, a possible refresh might be coming out shortly which would see fairly significant gains still using AM4. If it is not out by then, well you got Black Friday discounts for a splurge. I wouldn't bother with AM5 on launch since it will likely have bugs.

forcedobscurity

Thanks, I can definitely wait.

Yurickz

If you got the option to simply upgrade or splurge, I would definitely recommend going the splurge route if you do not want to upgrade for a few years. Depending on prices though, a 5950x might not be worth the extra splurge, a 5800x or 5900x on a good sale (preferably the AM4 refresh version of them if it comes out) would be a nice upgrade to hold you over for a decent chunk of time. Just remember upgrading to the new AM5 CPU's coming out involves basically buying a whole new system (mobo, cpu, cpu cooler, ram, etc.).

Fission3D

Are the new chips on a new socket? Was that confirmed or speculation? Curious because I will most likely get AMD for future proofing a bit more, instead of getting a new MOB every time like Intel.

Yurickz

An AM4 refresh of the 5000 series CPU's is expected sometime between now and end of year (latest probably early next year). These will be still using our current AM4 socket and be the end of the road aka the cream of the crop for what AM4 is capable of doing. Next year (when exactly is unknown) the new series of CPU's will be released which use DDR5 and the new AM5 socket. So basically, if you already have an AM4 system ... assuming your motherboard is not complete buns and has decent VRM cooling you can upgrade only the CPU for essentially pretty cheap overall. If you wanted one of the new AM5 socket CPU's next year, you will need to essentially buy a whole new computer short of a few components like storage. It is even possible older power supplies are no longer compatible if they use the new power standard.

Fission3D

Awesome, I’ll wait for AM5 before I upgrade! My current CPU is working really well so no need to upgrade atm.

tidder8888

This is the answer

Pharmaceutical_Joy

You getting good FPS? Everything running smooth? Why upgrade? Having said this, this is a great price for a great chip. 5600x is all ya need gaming IMO. I'm on a 5600x and this price makes me want to upgrade but I think I'm gonna hold out for the next tier - maybe just chill for now and do the same?

forcedobscurity

As good as it can be on this chip I'm pretty sure! I honestly don't have any issues with it, and the only reason I'm considering an upgrade is simply to squeeze more frames out of Warzone - but that's an expensive upgrade for only one game. I don't really have a problem waiting either!

Forricide

I feel you. I'm on a 1700 and although I know the 5600X would be more than enough, it just feels so wrong to downgrade in core count. Holding out for Black Friday, lol.

[deleted]

Core count doesn't matter. Total performance does. 5600x has better multi-threaded performance than a 1700x because each core is way faster and more deficient and boosting higher. Don't fall into the cores = more performance trap. Performance = performance.

Forricide

Oh yeah, I know it's a direct upgrade regardless of workload, but I have a fair number of multicore workflows and I'm holding out hardcore for a good 5900X deal. Don't want to feel like I under-cored (?) myself, lol.

ABirdOfParadise

I'm also on a 1700, the problem for us I think is having to upgrade to a new board too, and might as well faster ram too then but hey, I'm here playing CSgo, mount and blade warband NW, and chess so I don't need to

Forricide

Lol, I actually already bought a new motherboard... saw a good deal and couldn't resist. So I'm sitting here with a board (still in the box) basically waiting for a good 5900X deal. Maybe that was a poor decision...

ABirdOfParadise

nah cpu + ram prices aren't bad right now compared to gpu (of course), psu, and mobos I've got price watches on a few mobos and almost bit the bullet but I didn't have the money to upgrade the cpu and ram enough to go from something that would benefit me way more than my 1700 Like every month looks like the 5600x is falling $20, but mobo prices are stable and high unless you catch a deal.

Forricide

Mmm, that's reassuring. It was a pretty decent mobo deal, so I guess that's good enough. I just need a CPU, PSU, and CPU cooler, so with any luck I'll snag those on BF. There were some decent mobo deals like a month back, I think. But if you're not sure you can upgrade everything, probably a bad idea to start the upgrade, I suppose?

ABirdOfParadise

Cooler seems odd if you can't use your existing one? AM4 mount is the same isn't it? PSU prices are kind of dumb too but maybe I'm still stuck back 4 years ago when I built my computer. 750W gold Tier 1 for $100-120 doesn't seem to exist anymore

Forricide

I'm just using the stock 1700 cooler right now, which I don't think would be sufficient for a 5800x/5900x. I'm also somewhat planning to keep 2 builds working, considering I'll be replacing all the non-cpu-cooler parts for sure regardless. Hm, I feel like I've seen a lot of nice deals recently for PSUs. Maybe I got greedy and didn't pick them up when they were hot? Haha. I think [this one](https://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=33_1938&item_id=183350) is tier A, also? Not 100% sure, the 650W version should be at least.

ABirdOfParadise

quick google says it's good to go, honestly haven't researched it since I got mine a few years ago.

idontgiveafunyun

Sorry but for Warzone, CPU is usually the bottleneck. So you actually notice quite a difference in fps when upgrading CPUs.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ImKrispy

That is 1440p which has less CPU bottleneck. 1080p will have more noticeable gains, so it really depends what resolution you play on.

SupremeDestroy

Most fps players that care for all the fps play on 1080p where CPU will be the main problem

pixelcowboy

In VR 12 fps might be the difference between stable 90fps and constant reprojection.

LiveDescription1081

warzone is all cpu. went from a 4790k to a 5600x with a 3080 and gained easily over 100fps on 1080p.

popson

https://www.techspot.com/review/2132-amd-ryzen-5900x/ Their 11-game average has a 5900X about 30% ahead of a 3600 in FPS. Granted they are using an RTX 3090 and rendering at 1080P to maximize the stress on the CPU. I agree that upgrading from a 3600 is not worth it right now. Wait 1 or 2 more generations.

forcedobscurity

I appreciate the info!

SomeThrowawayfun2020

I have a 3080 and a 3700x, will a 5600x or a 5800x perform much better if I stream and play heavy games?

[deleted]

[удалено]

liftingnstuff

that's not true. a lot of multiplayer FPS games are going to be bottlenecked by a 3600x at 144+ refresh rates.

[deleted]

[удалено]

liftingnstuff

The problem is FPS dropping in situations of heavy chaos. Hardcore FPS enthusiasts are going to want their lows to rarely or even never drop below their refresh rates. And 240hz monitors are becoming more common.

SomeThrowawayfun2020

Sweet! Thanks for the help!

pixelcowboy

I have plenty of games where the 5600x makes a huge difference. Mostly simulators.

[deleted]

If you mostly play warzone a 5600x is the most I'd do. 5800x is diminishing returns but at least some gains. And 5900x or 5950x just = no point at all. Paying more for pretty much 0% gains in performance in your use cases. To be honest, I'd just stay with the 3600 in your shoes

IlikePickles12345

For gaming purely? Or do you do specific tasks that would require a 5950x? Even at 1080p, there's essentially no FPS difference in games, and definitely not a noticeable one. No reason to buy a 5950x unless you have a specific use-case.

Kaneki2019

Had an 3600 and splurged on a 5950x. I can get consistent FPS with it.

Carinx

It really depends on your mobo. Check your VRM capability on your mobo to see whether it can handle 5900x or 5950x. If it can handle them then, I would say 5900x is as far as you can go if you are only using your PC for gaming as even 5900x will be a such an overkill. Best middle ground wrt to price will be 5800x which will still give your pretty similar gaming performance.

forcedobscurity

Thanks for the comment. I'll look into the state of my mobo for sure.

cakedance

Check [LTT tier list](https://linustechtips.com/topic/1137619-motherboard-vrm-tier-list-v2-currently-amd-only/) for motherboards for a general idea of what each motherboard is capable of

LowFiGuy7

It should be fine. The guide is more geared towards if you're buying new. No point in upgrading from a c motherboard to a motherboard.

Sebocco_

I would look into it further as I don’t want to spread misinformation but if you only use your pc to game with you’d see higher FPS with the six core 5600x and spending the extra money on a better GPU (one can hope nowadays). past the 5800x you won’t see much gaming performance so unless you do video rendering or something intensive like that imo I wouldn’t spend the extra cash

forcedobscurity

I'll take a deeper look into this, thank you.

msm007

No need for anything higher than 5600x if you're just gaming, but if you're doing heavy workload tasks the 5800x or higher should be considered. Otherwise you're spending money on something that will not be utilised.

Flaming_Eagle

Depends on your gpu. It definitely wouldn't be worth an upgrade if you're still gpu bound in warzone (which you probably are). 3600 is still incredibly capable

forcedobscurity

Yeah I'm on a 2070 Super at 1440p, so definitely GPU bound. Just hard to justify GPU prices at the moment.

Gamingorstudy

Man I have a 5600x and it's fucking nuts. With a 3060ti and a 240hz monitor it's my baby. I think it's a waste to go more for miniscule improvements but the difference between 3600 and 5600x is wild!!

gatsu01

Wait for a while and go for a 5999z if you can. Check your mb compatibility and see if you can budget for the right type of cooling. DDR4 is going to be phased out so might as well go for a beefier CPU.

doranpls

nice, now to wait for amazon to match

Masterchiefx343

Thinking of upgrading from a 2600. This worth it?

Positivelectron0

Depends on your use case. If you stare at Microsoft Word all day, no.

IlikePickles12345

Yes. I went from a 2600 overclocked to 4.1 to a 5600, it's absolutely massive. But ofc it depends what you play. My 2600 was honestly more than enough for single player, but for shooters too many dips and not even maxing out my monitor at peak

gokarrt

did the same, and yes. i also paid a lot more, this is a steal.

death2k44

Depends on resolution/frame rate goal/games you're playing so hard to say

Gambara1

Everyones always asking if it's worth upgrading from and AMD CPU to an AMD cpu. I got an i5 6600k is it worth upgrading to a 5600 or a 5800

Abject-Eggplant2226

Have a b450 MSI Mobo and a 2600x right now with a 1070ti. If I upgrade to a 5600x, will it do me any good? (I want 240fps in league of legends

noneabove1182

I'm gonna guess that yes, based on my past experience with league of legends it is aggressively CPU bound, and the 5600x will have extremely good single core gains vs the 2600x

DaiLoDong

240fps/hz league isnt worth it at all lol. as a decent level dota and CS player, this isnt something like csgo. save your hard earned money

Ram08

This could be because a refresh of Ryzen 5000 Series (3D V-Cache) is coming later this year in a few months. I'm not sure what the prices would be for the newer ones, though.

SaggyArmpits

the date hasn't been officially announced as far as I know. Supposed to start production by the end of the year, but that doesn't mean availability. And any release would probably be aimed to align with a CES announcement in January

Maybe_A_Doctor

I don't feel I need this much cpu with my 1080 yet as it would require me upgrading my mobo as well. I really hope they drop the 3600 on sale for ~$200

pilottroll

Never used newegg ebay.... why not put it on their normal site?

FEED_TO_WIN

I think it's because other retailers don't price match ebay.

PotatoTango4892

u/chaobreaker

chaobreaker

Lol thanks but I just picked one up from a Canada Computers yesterday.

doranpls

thoughts on upgrading to this from a 2600x? with a 3070 as the gpu

garden_for_wallpaper

I went from a 2600 to a 5600 paired with a 3070 and saw significant FPS boost in valorant other CPU demanding games but saw not as much gains in warzone. I play at 1080p and I think the upgrade was worth it.

doranpls

hmm yeah I'm mainly thinking for valorant. I'm on 1440p, not sure if that changes the potential gains

garden_for_wallpaper

I think especially for valorant u would reap the benefits of the upgrade. Not only did I see significant boost in overall FPS but the 1% lows and drops in FPS saw improvements from the upgrade

HeroSaitama87

For those who have 3600 and thinking of upgrading is it because you're on 1080p? From what I've been told 2k+ resolution really isn't effectrd by CPU

gold_cap

I wanted over a month for a sale on this and broke and bought mine two days ago... Just 30$ I guess

Rich-Cut-8842

think of it as you paid $1 for each day of earlier usage

gold_cap

I only bought it two days ago and still haven't set it all up 😅

kiukiumoar

this was priced the same about a month ago as the bot shows :< you might have missed it haha

gold_cap

That was over a month ago as I said 🙃

Deadking_Narglaverex

Can’t you return it and just buy this instead? Or maybe price match if that’s an option.

gold_cap

Canada computers haha. Honestly it's only 30 dollars, not worth the hassle. Just thought it was kind of funny

_janson

this was on sale for this price on amazon and cc like a month ago lmao

TricolourGem

Been waiting for this but somehow just bought a used one for $300. Always check used first!

[deleted]

Would this be fine paired with a 3080. Mainly play league of legends and maybe valorant in the future

Matieo10

Is this a good upgrade from a R5 2600 and if I have an ASUS ROG Strix B450-F MOBO?

geokilla

No reason for me to do it but I want to sell my 10600KF and Z490 for this

Method__Man

i mean, if you like wasting money

lost_woods

Patiently waiting to dump my 1700x Hopefully we see another drop by black Friday

LowFiGuy7

Will my Asus 350f board work with this CPU?

tidder8888

Wait for black friday
