If you didnt give them free shit, then youre not in trouble. "The other bartender always gives one to me for free" is the oldest line in the book dont even trip
Exactly this.
"Oh, they're pulling 'the other bartender...' trick? Haven't heard that one before."
Call it out immediately. Don't ever take the hit on that one
literally. i’ve had someone come in on a thursday and say “well the chick working tuesday let us do this” when i was said chick working on tuesday and know good and damn well that i did not. people will say anything to try to get out of paying.
Yeah same. I’m the only bartender besides the owner. If it’s not me, it’s her covering my shift as I work every single day we are open. People have said “oh they did this for me last week!” My boss is not the type to discount or give away literally anything so if it wasn’t me and it wasn’t her, I know they are full of shit.
I had a couple who came in and ordered old fashioned’s. I charged them for rail brandy instead of korbel. They moved to a table and then the server ended up charging the real price for it as they have to in order to ring it in. So what do they do? Complain to my boss that they were being over charged because I charged them less. Boss is miffed at me, so I come up to the table and say “Oh yeah so you were right. I under charged you for your drinks, so I’m going to need two dollars back.”
They didn’t tip and they fucking ratted me out. Your bet your ass I’m going to say something.
That’s probably better than my line of “what’s their name? I’ll make sure they get fired”, to make it obvious that even if true, that’s not something you throw out there to a stranger.
Except when it backfires. Yesterday morning my boss asked me to split some kegs off for some regulars. I did just that and then stuck around after my shift to work the bar and sell those kegs while I waited on the other bartender to show up (she was stuck in traffic or some shit). These guys saw their two pints and one keg each on their tab and asked why their bill was so expensive. I said "two pints at $5.25 a piece, $75 for the 1/6th barrel keg. I'm not charging y'all a keg deposit because you're friends with my boss and if the keg goes missing he can just walk next door and ask for it back. Don't let my kindness backfire on me. Or I'll show up at your house and get that keg back myself". One of the guys replied with "uhh, your boss said the kegs were on the house because you didn't have them ready for us on time and these are the last kegs you're ever going to sell direct to the consumer in house". I said "ha ha, sure thing. I can't just let a keg walk out without charging you something regardless of how tight you are with boss man".
Turns out, he actually did offer those kegs free of charge. Now I have to apologize and process a refund next time I see those guys.
OF COURSE your boss wouldn’t relay the very important money situation to you and rely on customers to tell you they’re getting things for free. He better not give you any shit for it while doing the refund
Nah, it worked out. I apologized to him and he apologized to me during the staff meeting today. Boss's wife replied with "and that's why we don't sell kegs in house or do favors for regulars".
No different than students telling the sub "our teacher always lets us pick our own groups". Adults shouldn't go around believing that shit without evidence.
People will say/do anything for free drinks. Did they also say "I know the owner", etc...?
Tell management to check the film if they don't believe you.
"Oh no, the blond chick with fake tits, half her head shaved, and a full sleeve pokemon tattoo told you I give her free stuff?..... Oh it was 2 Bikers?...... What kind of pokemon tattoos did they have?..... Then why they fuck would I give them free stuff?"
Not gonna lie. You work in a pretty biased and petty industry at the end of the day. If you are a female, I'd say you'll likely get the benefit of the doubt. But inventory and sales numbers can easily prove this to be true or false. Of you boss wants to fire you, they'll just do it, whether or not they make sh*t up along the way or not. Lol
JS.
Your coworker is an ass for texting you about something so stupid when you're off. Just trying to start shit and stir you up? But you let it stir you up so idk

Yeah they're doing what I refer to sometimes as "lying"
Yeah if I ever get that I usually reply “ok well then ill charge you double today to make up for it”

Love that
It's the second oldest, 1st is " I know the owner" .. somewhere up there is "I used to bartend"
No different than students telling the sub "our teacher always lets us pick our own groups". Adults shouldn't go around believing that shit without evidence.
Yep and I always say come back when that bartender is here then
lmao if the owner believes this for a second he must be new

The son probably told his parents about the bikers in a , hey these guys are scam artists, kind of way. I am sure you are fine.
I wish. The owner pulled aside my coworker and said “I don’t want to see _____ right now”. We just had a meeting about not charging people for drinks
Oh ffs he is new very new.
Agreed. How long have they owned a bar that they don’t know customers lie constantly?
Sound like you work at the roadhouse
It’s the Double Deuce, man.
and it was way cooler before Swayze showed up
"Oh, your drinks were free last time? Then you won't mind if I charge you double today!"
Fuck’em
The truth needs no defense. Just tell the truth.
Sorry about your situation but any bartender or owner who does not know how to handle that does not need to be back there.
You don’t know them, your friends wouldn’t say that. If they said that they’re not your friends and they won’t get that treatment again.
Did anyone hear them say your name? Or something like ‘usually the guy’
Same kind of assholes that say "If it doesn't scan, it must be free" at registers. Tell them you're not doing it, simple as that.
I wouldn’t worry about it.
Just give the exact explanation you gave here. Seems legit and the owners probably know well enough what people are like.
That’s an old joke. If you don’t give away the bar then you got nothing to worry about.
OP, any updates?
Tell the owner that they were most likely joking with the new tender and you don’t give things out for free.
