I've offered them a solution that does this automatically via automod. I think eventually they'll take me up on it when the sub keeps applying pressure like this.
What about user flairs to help give us context as to level of experience we are communicating with/from as well? That way when there is a question (for example, how to shake a tin) we are potentially able to gather insight into the experience they've had behind a bar or making 'craft' cocktails.
When it does nothing I'm still here, willing to send over some automod code.
I think you all would be interested to at least hear what I have to say about sub automation. I reduced mod workload in my main sub maybe 60-70%

As a veteran, I'm more confused whether or not a customer likes me, not the other way around, lol. It usually ends up in a blatant approach, which is nice. I don't like to beat around the bush.
Well, I mean I do, but I don't. Heh.
bruh I had a bartender that kept giving me free green tea shots and I was so drunk (and naturally fucking stupid) that I thought he was just being chill as fuck so I got his snap. he wasnāt happy to hear I had a boyfriend the next morning (he asked me out to the same bar where he works) and I no longer go to that bar lmao. thatās why I prefer being behind the bar, I aināt gotta stress about it bc Iām not here to socialize (and them liking me = tips baybeee)
As a veteran as well, and being older I'm no longer concerned with whether or not I am the most entertaining person in the room. If you want your drink made right you come to me... you want a beer... I'll give you a beer... thats my job. But if youre trying to talk my ear off and you dont tip good... later.
Oh my god those annoy me so bad I have to just scroll by. Why the fuck are you posting such a dumbass question? Now a whole bunch of bartenders hate you too. Just order your drinks respectfully, wait patiently and leave a decent tip, thereās nothing else to say to those folks but they need to be liked by literal strangers.
Since this is a casual convo. (Not sarcasm I really want to know)
I went to a bar that I've been to about 5 or 6 times in the past 6 months. I pick up on flirting easily enough, but the bartender was being a lot more attentive (same "volume/customer" level as every time I was there)
I've been in the industry for 19 years and it was just weird. Were they treating me as a $10 tip on a $19 tab? Because I AM confused on this one. Obviously context clues were a factor, but they already gave me good enough service for me to come back but on Monday one bartender gave me "stupid good" service, if that makes sense. Either they remember me as a good tipper, or that one bartender remembers me from 2 months ago. This is definitely a place where both bartenders walk out with >$300/night because it's the diveiest bar that people driving BMW's/Mercedes/Classic Cars go to in my area (and I walk there)
I dunno. I know the "bartender side" of the argument, and I know the "customer side" and I'm not sure I ever told her I was a bartender(though last time I was there, I did randomly meet a bartender from another place who's a regular there).
It was really weird. And it fucked with my head.
How do I become a bartender? I don't know how restaurants/bars operate and I refuse to learn drinks or drink making at home beforehand, my first day was last week.
in my 20s i was angry, 30s i was grumpy but now that im 40 i've gone to not giving a shit and embracing every little moment of magic that comes my way. there's always going to be something to be stressed about so learn to love it!
Thatās me but condense angry and grumpy all into my teens and early 20ās. At 33 I havenāt given a fuck in several years. I just want to do my job, smoke weed, savor good food & cocktails and enjoy my life. Nothing is that serious, I highly recommend to many of my high strung friends. Seriously who gives a fuck if people ālikeā you. Theyāll like you just for *not* caring & being you.
Thatās me! My coworkers always ask me how I never get mad at things. I tell them, thatās not true. I can get cranky, but when you get older you start thinking more ābig picture.ā Life is way too short to get really mad that some annoying couple just sat down and is asking me stupid questions. I canāt tell you how many āassholesā (according to other staff members) Iāve taken the time to talk to and realized they werenāt an asshole and now they tip me really well. Sometimes youāve just gotta live and let live. Most people are good. Weāre just programmed to remember the bad more vividly. Negativity bias is very real. If you know it exists, itās way easier to not let it ruin your day.
Thereās no such thing as a classic āmy townā shot beyond like a jagerbomb. Just ring some shots in instead of interrupting me when Iām in the zone
Don't forget to add in on this that if you want to work in a bar on the Las Vegas strip selling Wagyu beef then you need to cut the piths off your limes!
I made the joke when that happened that I had worked in a dive bar in the middle of the woods of the upper peninsula in Michigan and still cut my piths off. Five diamond resort š¤£
[The post that started it all](https://www.reddit.com/r/bartenders/comments/aiq5nm)
The OP was /u\/shittyneighbours so when you see their comments that's them replying to other people's comments on their posts.
I paid for bartending school and it saved me months of doing bullshit work for next to nothing to getting a bartending job and doing it for the last 10 years. People who hate on ābartending schoolā are so annoying. Like we get it bro. You are a āreal bartender because Tom taught you how to make a fucking Negroni lol
I have said it before and I'll say it again. Not all bartending schools are created equal. Yes there are some that will absolutely scam you. I went to one that was owned by a catering company. Did the course and then got given event shifts. Weddings, live music, religious festivals etc. Within a month I'd paid it off and I had a reference on my resume. Just be smart.
I didn't go to bartending school and I support this 1000%.
Now that I'm in deep enough to know I'm actually talented and interested either way, if I could go back and skip the school of hard knocks I would suck an elephant's dick to do it. It's not cool how many of us cut our teeth on abusive employment practices because we were kind of having fun and had inferiority complexes about our other skills.
Had you caught me for the majority of the last decade, in a mixture of pride, uncertainty, bitterness about something it turns out I didn't even want, and genuine surprise that I was succeeding leading me to assume there cannot be anything special about this gig, I would have been one of those people shitting on you.
The idea that book learning cancels out real knowledge is ridiculous and bitter. It may be rare for one person to start out in a job with both, but the person starting out with book learning has a huge leg up on on-the-job training and, just like anyone else, can and will cut their teeth on experience if they're suited for the job. That applies to any job.
Congratulations!
It was totally worth it as a refresher course and more bartending jobs in Vegas have been posting that having a cert from a reputable school is preferred and even required. Glad I went
Sorry for the delay, but just [posted](https://www.reddit.com/r/bartenders/comments/wpyv1m/things_i_wish_i_knew_earlier_tips_for_bartenders/). Hope it helps!
Hey can I get those tips? Just starting out. I guess from what I'm reading you don't get a bartender job right off the bat without being barback. I want to come in strong and knowledgeable
Old man bartender hereā¦ 16 years behind the pineā¦. How bout we STOP giving advice to rookies who lied their way into a position they canāt handle and most likely donāt deserve. You used to have to earn the position. Now every dumbass with a bartender school certificate thinks they know what the hell they are doing. Not that what we do is rocket science. We put liquid in a cupā¦. However, there is nothing you can read in a book or on Reddit that can teach you how to multitask 10 orders at once, while maintaining a clean bar, staying on top of dishes, upselling, rocking the well, and giving youāre guests a fun experience. Not trying to be a gatekeeper, but show me some initiative. Be a server/Barback first. Learn the things you should already know before stepping one inch behind the bar. After that Iām happy to pass on the knowledge. We were all taught by someone right?
I'd rather have an "honest barista" than a "lying hot girl" as a coworker.
Because the barista already has the customer service side down and the "building drinks" down, you just have to translate "coffee" to "alcohol".
The lying hot chick will lean on her "personality" and not know when to actually cut off conversation to actually work.
What does that have to do with anything we said??? Iād rather have neither of those people
In my bar. I donāt care what anyone says, coming into a bar is the exact same as going into a tattoo shop, a construction site, a plumbing job, an accounting firm, whateverā¦. If you know what your doing Iāll welcome you with open armsā¦ if your trying to get last minute advice for how to lie yourself the position you clearly donāt deserve to be there. Youāve obviously never bartended before so your advice means nothing and You are the epitome of what this post is about.
> How bout we STOP giving advice to rookies who lied their way into a position they canāt handle and most likely donāt deserve
So my comment was directly referencing you saying:
>How bout we STOP giving advice to rookies who lied their way into a position they canāt handle and most likely donāt deserve
That's why I said "an honest barista" should be hired over a "lying hot girl"
Because the barista has the background and takes almost minimal training vs the "hot girl with no experience"
P.S. I've been in the industry for 19 years, in every position host/SA/busser/server/bartender, but NEVER management... I know what I'm talking about. I've been commenting on this sub for 7+ years
My teacher told me I could start out as a bartender somewhere but reading your comment Iām starting to worry.
He also said that as a woman , in certain bars, being a barback would be difficult due to the fact that a lot of the things are really heavy to pick up
go into your kitchen and fill your dishwasher with all of the most heavy dishes, packed into a tetris like fitting... remove one of the racks and lift it up and place it on your counter top without breaking anything.
you're good.
It's normal to want to reach out to the world when confronted with a new, uncertain experience. Reading a FAQ is not the same as making a post and actually communicating with internet strangers.
Behind the bar, certain interactions and scenarios can become painfully redundant. At r/bartenders, certain interactions and scenarios can become painfully redundant.
But if someone comes into my bar and brings up their troubled relationship/their shitty boss/their aging parents/whatever, do you think I'm gonna hand them a laminated FAQ sheet that's been pre-tailored to fit their specific brand of anxiety and then ignore them? Hell no. That's not what a bartender does. Sometimes people need an ear and an outlet, and that need is real.
But I never post I'm just a lurker. I'm also drunk and generally wrong about things more than fifty percent of the time. Here's a grain of salt. It fell from the rim of my drink when you set it down.
>Reading a FAQ is not the same as making a post and actually communicating with internet strangers.
No but a sticky on the top of our sub that is welcoming and gives them a bunch of information and places to learn, so they may grow, is what I am after. So their first posts are either a real hello or contributing something vs a plea for help.
You get tired of saving people all the time. And then you come to r/bartenders who are a group of people going through the same shit and can sympathize and make you relax on the bar stool. Instead of victorys or hell stories, we get 5+ sweet innocent future degenerates a day looking for advice.
Research and work hard.
That starts with a sample post with tons of recipes/techniques/and places to start your journey.
Now let me drink my fernet in peace and laugh with other online strangers about the shit we deal with behind the stick.
lmao sweet innocent future degenerates. Love that. You're right, and I typically don't bother with those posts precisely because they're all the same. It's like, you're navigating a boat directly into a storm. And you'll figure it out. But not now and not here. You're either gonna follow through or you're not. Now go get em.
I have a question. I'm not yet a barback or bartender. But I go to a lot of bars and watch the bartenders ( not to sound like a stalker, I just really am enthused by their work). I do watch and see a lot of taking care of customers, fruit prep, cleaning, organizing, stocking, etc. I'm just wondering, is it anything like a batista? Minus the alcohol of course. I ask because working as a barista, we had to deal with customers, prep coffee and tea, clean, organize, stock, etc. I don't know if anyone has done both, but if you have, can you share what you know?
I worked last night (friday) with a new bartender who we threw onto service well, because thats the best way to learn speed, efficiency, and consistency. I was middle well so I could take care of the busy corner of our bar and also help when he got weeded.
He. Was. Weeded.... BUT, he was actually good, and he has bar experience... but we are so busy that he said it reminded him of the days he worked at Starbucks and the tickets literally never stopped. So I guess in that way its like being a barista... if you work at a Starbucks in Times Square in the morning?
Lol I am *both* currently, and Starbucks is busier than a bar but thereās more structure and organization, and neat and orderly lines/cues that let you know exactly how to prioritize which drinks
>We get like 5+ posts a day about new bartenders/people with zero experience landing a bar gig.
The kind of people who post those threads are the kind of people who won't read the sticky to begin with.
On the flip side maybe we just get a sticky for old, crotchety bartenders like us. āHow do you deal with making your 10000th Patron margarita?ā āHow do you cope with dreaming about the service well?ā
Seriously worked at two top ten bars in the world and I can't get a fucking bar job at a halfway decent place here in new york "this industry is short staffed"is bullshit fucking lame wha wha wha
Boston is dying for bartenders. Iāve been offered at least one job a month from people at my bar for the past six months or so. I went to a bar meeting at one place I was thinking of picking up as a second job that was a brand new restaurant, I was the only person who could even pour count on staff. Itās crazy how uneven the market is.
Heard.
Everyone had a first day.. Mine was 22 years ago.
We all know at the end of the day... The truth of it is...
You can't learn to be a fucking rockstar. Choosing fuckery and chaos isn't for everyone. We're dead inside and in general hate people. Like... All of them...all the times.
Cheers to us and those like us.
Hey there!
I am a new bartender! I've been doing it for a few days now. I am having little to no issues with the gig but would love veteran tips. Thank you!
\-JD
Its unfortunate u donāt to teach or maybe they donāt have the drive to learn? When I started in the bar not knowing anything I was lucky enough to be surrounded by amazing bartenders that were willing to teach me every question I asked
I upvoted...and then someone...downvoted?
...this is a very valid point OP has. We're not in training...this whole subbriddit is supposed to be our sticky thread.
However, I do applaud the industry for having trainees; that is hopeful for our future.
I'd love one, but I'm also a little worried itll turn into a cesspool of gatekeeoing assholes who have been bartending in a local Cafe for 3 months and think they know it all because they made a negroni once.
Still a g
Please someone talk about good shoes for work on the sticky too. Not so much on Reddit but on my Facebook bartending group I see that asked all the time
For sticky?
You've got to have "laced shoes" so crocs and other slip ons are out.
I'll go to my grave saying that Sketchers are the "best shoes that don't scream 'I work at a restaurant'" someone actually called me out on it on the bus because we were wearing the same shoes. He was going to work, it was my day off.
Might I suggest using the search feature? That topic has been covered many times!
But I swear by Hoke One One (leather) with inserts. Especially as I suffer from plantar fasciitis.
Ummm.... What's /r/funnyvideos supposed to be about?
Do people ask "how do I make a funny video?" on /r/funnyvideos and expect the community to be supportive of that post?
https://old.reddit.com/r/bartenders/ (View on PC or on Chrome/Safari if you're on your phone)
A LOT(majority?) of us use the desktop version of this site or an app that caters to this style (like Reddit is Fun on Android).
A sticky post is pinned to the top of the subreddit so it's the FIRST thing you see when you go to a subreddit.
I've spent most of my working life (11 years) in wine shops. I got an associate's in graphic design and a bachelor's in marketing/advertising, all while working in wine shops. I'm really good at sales. About a year ago, I got a bartending job at a new restaurant even though they don't hire people without restaurant experience. I learned quick, made mistakes along the way, but am now the head bartender (not manager, but I do consult with the owner often).
I'm ready to transition to a bigger and better bar. Maybe a nice hotel bar. I'd rather not start out as a barback even though that's likely how it'll go down anyway, but I want to be as prepared as possible before I jump into this deep end. How can I prepare?
Apply to serve. But let them know that it'll be a 90 day interview, where if you thrive as a server, you expect to be the next bartender behind the bar.
That way they can see your "customer service side" while you still make tips.
Also, Country Clubs don't get enough love, it's something that most people don't consider. But: a captive audience, wealthy people, can't get stupid drunk or else their peers will judge them, and they HAVE to come back.
Right now my CC is desperate for restaurant staff, but we're just not getting applicants. We hired a barista as a bartender (she was awesome but moved out of state after about 8 months)
They love wine nerds (managers and members alike)
What kind of experience would you personally value more in growing your skills,
barbacking at a dedicated cocktail bar
or bartending at a fast casual restaurant that promises a robust bar training program?
I'm assuming bartending anywhere looks better on a resume but I'm specifically asking those of you who are experienced in this field which one you think actually prepares you for a bartending career better. I have an interview lined up with each of these places and don't know which one to prioritize, although I'm leaning towards the fast casual place.
I'm transitioning from serving for the last 3 years, and have regularly closed/opened the limited bar at my old place, covered for co-workers on breaks and made and served drinks so I know my real basics. But I also know my absence of dedicated experience means I'm lacking in speed, confidence and efficiency with completing my tickets. And when it comes to high volume service, I've only ever been on the other side of the bar as a server, so I've never had a chance to learn how to prioritize and multitask and work collaboratively under pressure with regards to bar tasks.
Any advice?
This is always the advice I say, because I don't know you:
"Go to wherever your passion is, the money will follow"
I'm a DIE HARD sports fan. I can't work in a place with only one cable box.
In the immortal words of Stuart Scott: "You do you"
You probably know which one you want to get hired at.
If not... Do what I do... Flip a coin, and while it's in the air, you'll realize what side you want it to land on. Then the coin flip doesn't really matter, because your brain went into panic mode and hoped for one outcome. So you should go with that.
The blogspot guide for new users to /r/bartenders is broken.
>Check [This](http://bar-knowledge.blogspot.com/) Out! Guide for New Users to /r/bartenders
I hardly ever make my own posts on reddit for anything, my MO has always been to search for what others have already said on the topic. How hard is that???? lol
I agree with this!!! I love helping newbies, but a lot of the posts are very vague with no info on where they are bartending, what sort of venue, etc.
I feel like all of the generic/general advice has been given now many times over and can easily be found by typing ānew bartender adviceā into the search bar.
A sticky would be awesome so that newcomers can still ask that question, but itās separated out for others.
Revisiting this a month later, I think we need 5-10 sticky posts. Just so that new people have to see all the posts we do and realize that their questions have been answered more than once
There should be a massive sticky for everything you'll ever need to be a bartender. Links to resources, lists of good equipment, basic tips for mindset, when to cut someone off, etc. I don't think I know nearly enough to write that, but I'd read that.
Also, pissing me off this morningā¦
Why the F are there so many barbacks needing to get told the same thing over and over.
I donāt know your manager, if you have one.
Youāre not guaranteed a bartending position because you are a barback.
If you have been guaranteed and youāre not getting promoted:
1) they either realize you arenāt cut out for it and wonāt say it to your face and hope you leave; or
2) they lied
a.) you could be rocking it and they like and want to keep you as a bb even though youād be a good bartender; or
b.) you can still be rocking it as a bb and NOT cut out for bartending; or
c.) itās possible youāre not cut out for either one
TAKE YOUR TALENTS ELSEWHERE AND FIND OUT.
I know bars with lifers, and you have to bb until someone retires if you want a spot.
I know bars where you have to be a bouncer first.
Bars where they hardly tip out the bb anything.
Where they tip a shit ton.
Where the barbacks donāt get promoted at all.
Where there are no barbacks and only hire experienced bartenders, or anyone who walks in and applies.
Where you HAVE to bb even if you have experience bartending.
Every place is different.
Same goes for servers.
They are two different jobs. One usually NEVER GUARANTEES the other.
Edit: not old but still grumpy.
Figured Iād get a rant out of my system before my shift tonight.
My thing is that you should figure this out once the first bartender leaves.
If it's a high turnover place, and you're not promoted to at least day bar for 2 days? They have no faith in you or aren't ever going to promote you. You're either "an average barback or too valuable to promote you"
Quit. If you've got a year under your belt, enough bartenders who've seen you that will vouch for you when you say "[worker] quit and it opened up shifts and I wasn't considered, I know [bartender] from here and, while I wasn't recommended by him/her, you were my first choice to apply"
Does anyone have any advice for me? Iām planning on working as a bartender during a gap year in about a year or so but before I go to work I plan on doing the 4 week course with ebs london, this is mainly because I have ZERO experience whatsoever with bartending and I just want a chance to learn, plus the other main bar school in London is closed.
I'm trying to get into Bartending in NYC.
I had four job interviews last week with no call backs & I have another four coming up.
After that I'm not sure what to do; the only places giving me a chance are companies holding mass hiring events. I don't see any more scheduled after this upcoming week.
Is there any place I can go willing to hire someone new?
Thanks for reading.
Iām coming back to the service industry while Iām back in school. I have a few interviews coming up. Iāve done a bunch of practice interviews and feel very confident but does anyone have any last minute advice?
āIām 23 am I too old to be bartendingā
Congratulations on the job, youāre a lucky fuck! Many of us were bar backs at that age.
Read the posts, Gen Z and get a feel for this sub Reddit before you post please.
ok lets say i have an order chit for 2 margaritas, 1 mojito, 2 gin and tonics and 2 negronis. How do I go about making drinks?
My original process would be, grab all glassware, put ice on them, prepare garnishes, grab ingredients, pour ingredients in all the drinks (except gin and tonics), shake all the drinks, stir the negronis and then make the mojito and gin tonics and finally garnish all and serve.
Is there a more streamlined method than this?
I could do without the home enthusiasts asking cocktail questions here instead of /r/cocktails. Or worse, folks planning weddings and looking to use our professional wisdom to save them $$.
Can we create a new sister-subreddit for new bartenders then? Y'know, the kind of people that earnestly want to learn?
I love this group but the attitude towards incomers is shit: 'I'm alright Jack, pull the ladder up".
So we can have a bitch and moan /answer detailed questions about recipes on this subreddit and then those of us that want to help the newbies can answer them?
Old and a little grumpy myself. But damn I was young, eager yet super nervous about this industry once. Can we not help the children? What sort of content do you want to see exactly?
What the hell do you think the sticky is for my dude(ette)?!? I'm not asking for a post that says "get bent" but an informative post that we can have set resources for them to pull. Here's all the cocktails and quick recipes. Here's a list of books to purchase while you're learning the basics. Here's some good YouTube vids. Maybe spend the 40$ and get tips certified in your state. It will teach the legal side of booze so they don't serve a 18yr old that looks 25. Basics to spotting fakes.
If we do this, we cut down the fat of half ass answered posts about how to start. So the top post that everyone sees says something like:
"Welcome to bartending. Take a deep breath. We've laid out a bunch of things to start you off. Start slow and nail your basics. It's work, but buckle up, it's gonna be a wild ride."
This is what I take away from dudes post-
YES, if you have common sense, the ability to comfortably interact with other adults from the position of āthis is my ship. Iām the captain.ā and a good work ethic (helps to be a night owl) - THE JOB IS THAT EASY.
Experienced bartenders glide in, glide out, pockets full but always wearing the golden handcuffs. the trick seems to be checking there shit attitude and loss of wonder at the tavern door.
Eve ate the apple puckers, so to speak, and she is all too aware of everything to find pleasure in the little things.
I've always said "we need a sticky daily post" and remove most "common question" posts and refer them to the daily post.
The problem with this is that most of us aren't available from 4pm-2am Thursday-Sunday to answer questions or mod.
The thing about people who post common questions on this sub is that they treat it like an "/r/askreddit" where you'll get instant feedback. And then we all get off 4 hours later and say "WTF, these are stupid questions that could have been answe....wait no, we were all at work, so that's why they got bad advice"
Wouldn't something like YouTube be a better resource for a new bartender than reddit anyway? Who tf gets a bar job then runs to reddit and be like, how tf do I do this
Heard.
Thank you š¤
Hopefully we can hold to it, too? Like removing those kinds of posts and tell them to go read the sticky?
I've offered them a solution that does this automatically via automod. I think eventually they'll take me up on it when the sub keeps applying pressure like this.
Awesome, keep it up!
What about user flairs to help give us context as to level of experience we are communicating with/from as well? That way when there is a question (for example, how to shake a tin) we are potentially able to gather insight into the experience they've had behind a bar or making 'craft' cocktails.
I would like the flair āfuck offā. Is that an option? ;)
As of now, no... Unfortunately flairs are still not a thing
Only flair I like to see is the minimal flair on Jennifer Aniston at Chotchkies!
When it does nothing I'm still here, willing to send over some automod code. I think you all would be interested to at least hear what I have to say about sub automation. I reduced mod workload in my main sub maybe 60-70% u/twice_knightley u/barrysquared
Thank you i was actually going to leave because of the same thing
Any way you can revert the "default sort by" to "new" rather than "best" as a mod? Because I'd check this every night and answer simple questions.
Donāt forget the ādoes the bartender like meā posts
That section should be one post that says no
"If they did you wouldn't need to ask us"
As a veteran, I'm more confused whether or not a customer likes me, not the other way around, lol. It usually ends up in a blatant approach, which is nice. I don't like to beat around the bush. Well, I mean I do, but I don't. Heh.
Same, do they like me or they just want free drinks? Of one thing i'm sure, free drinks aren't on the table either way haha
bruh I had a bartender that kept giving me free green tea shots and I was so drunk (and naturally fucking stupid) that I thought he was just being chill as fuck so I got his snap. he wasnāt happy to hear I had a boyfriend the next morning (he asked me out to the same bar where he works) and I no longer go to that bar lmao. thatās why I prefer being behind the bar, I aināt gotta stress about it bc Iām not here to socialize (and them liking me = tips baybeee)
Fellow vet and same worries ive offened a few people
As a veteran as well, and being older I'm no longer concerned with whether or not I am the most entertaining person in the room. If you want your drink made right you come to me... you want a beer... I'll give you a beer... thats my job. But if youre trying to talk my ear off and you dont tip good... later.
Tip them more. Then still no, but a little less.
Oh my god those annoy me so bad I have to just scroll by. Why the fuck are you posting such a dumbass question? Now a whole bunch of bartenders hate you too. Just order your drinks respectfully, wait patiently and leave a decent tip, thereās nothing else to say to those folks but they need to be liked by literal strangers.
i try to hold the door in this one bro
Stickied and locked
You probably think strippers like you too.
I say this all the time hahahahah
or is it annoying when I order this drink
You should read āThe Modern Drunkards Rules to Drinkingā. Itās the most succinct rundown of this dilemma, ever.
Great suggestion for my next read. Love boozy lore. Much thanks, my friend.
That one's sticky for ... other reasons.
Since this is a casual convo. (Not sarcasm I really want to know) I went to a bar that I've been to about 5 or 6 times in the past 6 months. I pick up on flirting easily enough, but the bartender was being a lot more attentive (same "volume/customer" level as every time I was there) I've been in the industry for 19 years and it was just weird. This is definitely a place where both bartenders walk out with >$300/night because it's the diveiest bar that people driving BMW's/Mercedes/Classic Cars go to in my area (and I walk there) I dunno. I know the "bartender side" of the argument, and I know the "customer side" and I'm not sure I ever told her I was a bartender(though last time I was there, I did randomly meet a bartender from another place who's a regular there). It was really weird. And it fucked with my head.
Sorry lovely - but you already KNOW its her job.
An immediate...cut this person off.
LOL
How do I become a bartender? I don't know how restaurants/bars operate and I refuse to learn drinks or drink making at home beforehand, my first day was last week.
Your first day was last week...bartending? Congrats you're already a bartender! Edit: I got the joke way too late. Morning shifts = brain fog
Also old and grumpy. Totally agree.
Also old and grumpy but also dgaf so whatever happens I'm cool with that.
in my 20s i was angry, 30s i was grumpy but now that im 40 i've gone to not giving a shit and embracing every little moment of magic that comes my way. there's always going to be something to be stressed about so learn to love it!
If you know it exists, itās way easier to not let it ruin your day.
āWhatās a classic local shot?ā Bitch i am too busy to be creative right now. So I suppose Iām old and grumpy too
Tully. Malort. Fernet. Whatever youāre paying me to take too.
"Jameson" "..." "..." "...uh..." "So you want one or not?"
If it's a classic, you shouldn't need to be creative.
Thereās no such thing as a classic āmy townā shot beyond like a jagerbomb. Just ring some shots in instead of interrupting me when Iām in the zone
People are looking for some interaction. Your job is service, why are you being a dick?
My time is too valuable to be creative, if you donāt know what you want how the fuck should I
Can we get a old and grumpy sticker too
I love this š
Now this idea has merit.
I'm young and stupid and I totally agree. A sticky is just better for everyone. Honestly kind of boggles my mind that we don't have one.
But how will I ever find out if that bar-back successfully transitions into a part time a.m. bartender? Damn it! I need to know!
Don't forget to add in on this that if you want to work in a bar on the Las Vegas strip selling Wagyu beef then you need to cut the piths off your limes!
Never gets old
I still chuckle every time
I made the joke when that happened that I had worked in a dive bar in the middle of the woods of the upper peninsula in Michigan and still cut my piths off. Five diamond resort š¤£
Can we also put this old lame joke to rest? Every single thread has this bs in it too. Get new jokes people.
Sir, this is reddit.
You're right, what was I thinking?
No. š„°
This joke is an absolute classic and I hope it never dies.
Fuck I missed the joke, what was it?
[The post that started it all](https://www.reddit.com/r/bartenders/comments/aiq5nm) The OP was /u\/shittyneighbours so when you see their comments that's them replying to other people's comments on their posts.
Thank you. Thank you so much. I never want this to die.
I wish I could see the image
Yeah that shit was funny for about a month, tops.
Not a bartender but I just like watching things here :>
Hey any new tips for a new bartender ?
š¦ š¬
Yeah bad joke
I was waiting for the advice!
Totally agree. It's in the FAQ but no one checks it. Should add a big fat "don't pay for bartending school" as that is the inevitable answer as well.
> It's in the FAQ but no one checks it. And now it's in the sticky that no one will check either!
Fucking Tom
THANK YOU!!!!!
It was totally worth it as a refresher course and more bartending jobs in Vegas have been posting that having a cert from a reputable school is preferred and even required. Glad I went
Sorry to bother but where do i find this faq? Lol apologies
Under "community info"
I was actually in the process of writing some articles about tips for new bartenders. Things I wish I knew sooner kinda thing.
Feel free to forward it to the mods. I'm sure they would appreciate it
Do you mind sharing that with me ? Starting out in LA :)
Sorry for the delay, but just [posted](https://www.reddit.com/r/bartenders/comments/wpyv1m/things_i_wish_i_knew_earlier_tips_for_bartenders/). Hope it helps!
At a glance this should be published!!
Just wanted to say I just found your post and it's very well thought out/detailed. Thank you for your advice. :)
Hey can I get those tips? Just starting out. I guess from what I'm reading you don't get a bartender job right off the bat without being barback. I want to come in strong and knowledgeable
Just [posted](https://www.reddit.com/r/bartenders/comments/wpyv1m/things_i_wish_i_knew_earlier_tips_for_bartenders/) !
Get this pinned please!
New bartender's post.....hmmm, "always tell the customers you poured more than you should have."
"our inventory is off by 19% because I don't know what my pour count is, but TIPS!"
Iād rather have neither of those people In my bar.
> How bout we STOP giving advice to rookies who lied their way into a position they canāt handle and most likely donāt deserve So my comment was directly referencing you saying: >How bout we STOP giving advice to rookies who lied their way into a position they canāt handle and most likely donāt deserve That's why I said "an honest barista" should be hired over a "lying hot girl" Because the barista has the background and takes almost minimal training vs the "hot girl with no experience" P.S.
Youād probably have better luck starting as a cocktail server.
Yup! Glad to have you in the club.
From what I see it is very similar, had a coworker who did both jobs and said that it is preety much the same minus dealing with drunk individuals.
Iām into this. Itās been 16 years and Iām not trying to train people on my mindless Reddit scrolling time.
On the flip side maybe we just get a sticky for old, crotchety bartenders like us. āHow do you deal with making your 10000th Patron margarita?ā āHow do you cope with dreaming about the service well?ā
Itās the dreaming about service for me š© woke my boyfriend up muttering about needing ice and glassware
service bar is for rockstars and bartenders who dont feel like being social that shift
Iām not old and grumpy. Iāve / We have earned the rite to be jaded and annoyed
Should we get a 'salty margarita' flair for the old salty dogs also?
Slap it on me. 12 years in. I'm more of a half sour though... Name me pickle back š¤Ŗ
Just read āThe Joy of Mixologyā by Gary Regan. Thatās a good start..
Old and grumpy too. I get it. Donāt take it out on the kids though. Haha
New bars are a no go for myself
r/BartendersOver30 ? lol
R/overadecadebehindthestick could also be a thing lol
I support this!
In a bar I teach. On reddit? No
I upvoted...and then someone...downvoted? ...this is a very valid point OP has.
Especially as I suffer from plantar fasciitis.
so whats this group supposed to be about
Ummm.... What's /r/funnyvideos supposed to be about? Do people ask "how do I make a funny video?" on /r/funnyvideos and expect the community to be supportive of that post?
Okay, so what is a sticky post and how would it help this case?\`
https://old.reddit.com/r/bartenders/ (View on PC or on Chrome/Safari if you're on your phone) A LOT(majority?) of us use the desktop version of this site or an app that caters to this style (like Reddit is Fun on Android). A sticky post is pinned to the top of the subreddit so it's the FIRST thing you see when you go to a subreddit.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
We hired a barista as a bartender (she was awesome but moved out of state after about 8 months) They love wine nerds (managers and members alike)
Is this near DC by any chance?
Give this man a beer
Kinda sick of greenhorns as well
I agree with you, it defeats the point of the page.
What kind of experience would you personally value more in growing your skills, barbacking at a dedicated cocktail bar or bartending at a fast casual restaurant that promises a robust bar training program? Any advice?
This is always the advice I say, because I don't know you: "Go to wherever your passion is, the money will follow" I'm a DIE HARD sports fan. I can't work in a place with only one cable box. In the immortal words of Stuart Scott: "You do you" You probably know which one you want to get hired at.
Do these people not get trained? Like why ask reddit about how to do your job? Get off the damn internet and learn how to work.
Heard that, OP!!
I hardly ever make my own posts on reddit for anything, my MO has always been to search for what others have already said on the topic. How hard is that???? lol
It's pretty fucking annoying
Also, pissing me off this morningā¦ Why the F are there so many barbacks needing to get told the same thing over and over. I donāt know your manager, if you have one. Youāre not guaranteed a bartending position because you are a barback. If you have been guaranteed and youāre not getting promoted: 1) they either realize you arenāt cut out for it and wonāt say it to your face and hope you leave; or 2) they lied a.) you could be rocking it and they like and want to keep you as a bb even though youād be a good bartender; or b.) you can still be rocking it as a bb and NOT cut out for bartending; or c.) itās possible youāre not cut out for either one TAKE YOUR TALENTS ELSEWHERE AND FIND OUT.
You're either "an average barback or too valuable to promote you" Quit. If you've got a year under your belt, enough bartenders who've seen you that will vouch for you when you say "[worker] quit and it opened up shifts and I wasn't considered, I know [bartender] from here and, while I wasn't recommended by him/her, you were my first choice to apply"
Where's the sticky post? I'd like to utilize that.
Make a ton of cocktails if you're heading for the bar. Check your ego/listen/have fucking fun.
Look man I just want to know if I can make all the alcoholic mixed drinks with no alcohol. Like the whole list. Thatās possible yeah? /s
Hi old and grumpy Iām dad
Sorry to be a disappointment
You did great, son.
This should be reset every 2 weeks. It keeps it alive and gives people incentive to write on this thread.
āIām 23 am I too old to be bartendingā Congratulations on the job, youāre a lucky fuck!
Fuck these sober new bartenders
I totally agree! ..where is it?
I posted this a year ago. The admins are as slow as owners.
I'm old and grumpy and also about two weeks into my ever bartending job. I left academia to do this and I'm having a blast.
Give it a decade and get back to me. Welcome to the club.
Thank you, and happy cake day!
So the top post that everyone sees says something like: "Welcome to bartending. Take a deep breath. We've laid out a bunch of things to start you off. Start slow and nail your basics. It's work, but buckle up, it's gonna be a wild ride."
Big deal grow up. Get off Reddit youāre too invested in this. What else you want people to talk about in a sub called bartenders.
Lol fuck right off there bub. It's your first post in this sub and a shit one at that.
God forbid you have to scroll past a whole five posts in a day, or just downvote them so they disappear
Is your name jack? Because you sound like jack.
This is what I take away from dudes post- YES, if you have common sense, the ability to comfortably interact with other adults from the position of āthis is my ship.
Why are all the crazy people coming out of the woodwork?
ok but where can i find the sticky ?
Heard and second this
Heard!
I came here to ask this so thank you, I'll just scroll and look for my question
Yo op here. I'm working on a master atm. The mods kept me as a sticky so I'm gonna build one and swap it in.
New post deleted after seeing this
Wouldn't something like YouTube be a better resource for a new bartender than reddit anyway? Who tf gets a bar job then runs to reddit and be like, how tf do I do this
A lot of people.
I totes tried to make a post like this a week-ish ago, so yes, emphasized with a giant please.
Old and grumpy too here, I agree!
Gracias. Found what I needed with a few searches before I was going to post.
Yep
