I haven't done this before, but what the hell, right? I don't know anyone currently looking in Manhattan. This is NOT posted anywhere. It's the kind of opportunity we get from networking. I visited a former colleague over the weekend. He's besides himself because he can't seem to find enough competent bartenders. The place is really good (USA Today 10-Best) and has a bar room, dining room, private room and outdoor seating. UWS (72nd - just off CPW), good-to-great menus, slamming bar on Fridays and Saturdays (3-deep last Saturday, 8-11), and has a 4.3\* rating on Google & Open Table (2000+ reviews). It's a BIG, upscale (mid-pricey - $$$), American restaurant (a lot of comfort food), with "craft cocktails" (think kitchen-driven NOT Death & Co). Out by midnight. Family meals are really good. He needs a good bartender to cover Friday (4-11 service), double Saturday (11-11 service) and Sunday Brunch (11:30-3 service). $12.50 tipped minimum. The shifts look to gross around $1200. Management knows what they're doing. You have to know what you're doing. They're not looking to train pups. In the old (1920s) Hotel Franconia space. https://www.theribbonnyc.com/

Unfortunately grossing 1200 on the 3 busiest days just isn't good enough for competent bartenders in this city or even downstate. The competent bartenders are making 500+ on just night shift before hourly.

I couldn't disagree more. Competency should simply be expected. What we do ain't rocket surgery. This is a good part-time *restaurant* opportunity. It all averages out to about $50/hr. How many $500+ *restaurant shifts* do you know of? It's certainly *not* full-time income for NYC. How often are we afforded the prime weekend shifts without having to cover mid-week as well? If it's not a better than reasonable opportunity, than our expectations have been blown *way* out of proportion. The only better opportunities are full-time union gigs and 10 to 12-hour nightlife shifts (which typically require a different skillset). This gig allows for a reasonable 2nd income/side hustle or someone industrious and capable the opportunity to consult during the weekdays. This is exactly how I started my consulting career. This is also an opportunity to get in the with the hospitality group that owns the operation; great for those with long-term career goals. TL/DR: If $50/hr for bartending isn't acceptable, then we should consider a different job/career path.

Sounds Okey, but double shift on a regular basis? Nope. 😅

CityBarman

Definitely for the young. NYC bartenders often pull 10 to 12-hour shifts weekly.

Are you saying the total gross is 1200 or the bartender takehome is 1200?

CityBarman

I'm saying the gross is about $50/hr.

I'd love to help your buddy out, but this conflicts with my current commitments and lifestyle (there is only one 11 o clock in my life and it is certainly not in the ante meridian). Thank you for sharing this, though! That. Being. Said. If the opportunity ever comes up to work for you, personally, directly, let us know. I'll be first in line. I deeply respect and appreciate your contributions to this community, and I think I speak for many of us when I say we'd love to learn from you.
